its crazy how before the 2000s closers could become starters for a full season and go right back to closing. now chapman and other guys cant get more than 3 outs
wow, this video needs to be redone. We should not be surprised. We're in the golden age of the relief pitcher. Papelbon? His final year was 2016. He was very good though, with an ERA+ of 178 and 368 saves. Rollie Fingers? His career ERA+ is 120, good but much lower than that of Papelbon. Worthy of mention : Hoyt Wilhelm (!!) - not many saves but very low ERA numbers. Aroldis Chapman - 167 ERA+ over 300 saves. (update) Craig Kimbrel - 173 ERA+, 411 saves, still active in 2023
@@GentrovoKolyova Relief pitchers play a bigger role in baseball games today in 2023 than they ever did in the past. Of course there were great relief pitchers in the relatively distant past too, if only for a short time, like Jim Konstanty, Dick Radatz and Mike Marshall.
Goose Gossage is my number one relief pitcher of all time . Gossage could pitch 3 innings , have 7 strikeouts and get the save . As a San Diego resident , i saw both Gossage and Hoffman in person several times and Gossage is better , not even close . And Gossage dominated more than Marino ' one inning ' Rivera . Gossage doesn't blow the lead in game 7 of the World Series vs the D Backs or in game 4 of the ALCS vs the Red Sox like Mariano the choker did . I think Roy Face and Ted Abernathy belong in the top 10 of all time . Back in the 1960s , when saves meant something . they were setting NL records for saves in a season . First Face set the single season record during the decade . Then Abernathy broke Face's record and 2 years later the submarine pitcher broke his own saves record . Abernathy , with his submarine pitch , looked unhittable . Seeing him pitch against the Pirates , even the great Clemente had trouble against him . It is strange that the only player in the league who could actually hit Abernathy was Bucs first sacker Donn Clendenon , who was a good hitter and slugger , but did strike out often . In baseball , you never know . But i am ok with Face and Abernathy for the hof , along with Colavito ,Maury Wills , Roger Maris , Carl Furillo , Kluszewski , Dick Groat , Lolich , Tiant , Tommy John , Bill Freehan and Ken Boyer . And don't forget old timers Smokey Joe Wood , Heinie Groh and Bobby Veach for the hall .
Closers are nice, But in my day a "Closer" would sometimes pitch three or four innings. So, I'm not to concerned with Career Saves. Today's Relief Pitchers can easily eclipse (or even double), the number of Saves a Quality Fireman had in the 60's & 70's. So, I'd like to give a shout out to My favorite Relief Pitcher, Left-hander, John Hiller of the Detroit Tigers. Who After suffering a Heart-attack came back and set the Single season Saves Record. Don't Laugh, but it was something like 38 Saves.
Sandy Koufax after pitching 8 the greatest closer.

I’ve been meaning to redo these videos because they are old.

Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith should be on here
Exactly especially Lee
The Eck and Rollie Fingers are too low on the list.

No Lee Smith
Correction! Padres did not win a WS with Gossage. Tigers won the year they faced the Padres in '84.
1. Rivera 2. Hoffman 3. Kimbrel 4. Chapman
Lefty Levitt joe Nathan?

Nice shout out for Hiller! Thanks for the feedback.
And travel Hoffman should be too
Dan Quisenberry was better than a few of these closers
PFB1994 Quisenberry was really good. Thanks for the feedback!
No Gagne?
Ofc not lmao. Why would he
@@gavinwinkler3684 84 save streak. That's why
Trevor Hoffman is my number one
trevor hoffman best closer of all time
Tyrese williams Nice try. Mariano is easily superior.
Christian Sumek prove it the numbers can't prove it and neither do the ws appearances
Christian Sumek 5 ws rings world series mvp alcs mvp 652 career saves that no one will ever get close to and oh yeah a cutter that no one could hit
🤡
