In this video I compare the 2020 $1800 13" MacBook Pro against the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro. The new 13" has intel's 10th generation CPU Processors and is using an i5 2.0Ghz Quad Core with G7 graphics and 16GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The 16" has 9th generation i7 6 core 2.6Ghz processor with AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4GB Graphics and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.
I test DaVinci Resolve 16 Studio, Premiere Pro 2020, and Final Cut Pro X FCX with 4K and 6K video editing using a variety of codecs like H.264 MP4, H.265 HEVC, HDR, 8 bit and 10 bit, and Blackmagic RAW 4K 60 / 6K BRAW footage exporting to ProRes 422. I test timeline playback smoothness with color corrections, grade, and LUTS and playback FPS with 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps footage. I also export and render the clips to see how long they help. In the next video I will attach an EGPU to the 13" MacBook Pro.

Max, you are ABSOLUTELY bang on with data driven review. And you listen to people on what contents they wanna see and you create them quickly. Thanks for the awesome contents 🙏🏼
Tbh, I'd go for the 13 inch.. Money is money and the portability as a student means a lot!
Thanks Max, I know this was a lot of work and it is appreciated. I am definitely seeing reasons to get the 13". (:
Thank you, Max, for the great videos 👏👏👏
ALL notifications are enables for this channel and I still can't get enough !!
please make a detailed inspection about content creation and video editing on the base 1299 13" MacBook Pro 2020 and how it compares to the higher end model
Thanks Max! I love the small form factor. So tempting!
Amazing video. Thank you for all the work you've put in the comparison.
Thank you so much for making this video! Seriously appreciate your channel! 😁
thanks max!!! very helpful. thanks for making this
Seems like the moral of the story is use FCPX or Resolve and you're golden with either.
Excellent video as always. Your work is a huge inspiration for my own.
Thank you for doing this review because this is the decision I am trying to make right now. For video editing for my YT channel
Thank you for this video! I was in a debate which computer to get and you helped clear it up!
Thanks for the video !
great I was waiting for this vid forever
Great video, really made me stop to think about getting the 13” since the main purpose would be video editing...but I can’t afford the 16” so that’s not an option.
I’m seriously thinking about getting the 2020 Dell XPS 13, but can’t find a single video on video editing on it!
Any chance you could consider dropping a video editing review on the 2020 Dell XPS 13? The 16gb RAM model (same one you reviewed on your other channel) to keep it roughly in line with the MBP 13!
Thanks again Max!
Thank you very much max for the comparison
Awesome work like always.
Thanks for posting this Max, it clinched my decision. I just ordered the base 16" model using your affiliate link
You shoulda looked at Max Tech’s review comparing how the 13 inch compares with an egpu, putting it at a similar price range. The 13 inch+egpu destroys the 16 inch in most benchmarks for similar price.
ZachW yeah but not for video editing
I didn’t realize he had an affiliate link! I’ll have to buy it through there
@@bigimportantman1544 I agree with you that it's an interest prospect the 13inch with an eGPU. However if you travel or if you move frequently between 2 places where your only mode of transport is a plane, you'll hardly have the option of an eGPU. Unless of course you have the cash to buy 2, lol.
ZachW do you have a link to check it out?
I'm looking forward Apple finally switching to their own processors and to reduce the difference between the two laptops only to the screen and battery size. I want that graphics power in a small laptop.
Thank you so much max!
I just realised this guy and Max Tech are 2 different people after years
Dude I just assumed that two guys ran the channel and they each hosted their own solo videos.
Wait that actually is the case haha. But there is a seperate channel with only Max too. Weird haha.
Omg I just realized this too. I never paid that close attention to their facial features, their voices are so similar!
Bruh, I read this comment and was so confused. I went back to both channels and was like.....my entire life is a lie 😐
Huh?? Wait.....what!!??!!??
You changed my mind I need to cancel 13 inch now go for 16 inch thank you MAX
Thank you! This is helpful. Video editing is just a fun hobby for me, we’re talking point and shoot footage that I want to add LUTs and some text to. I’ll go for the 13” for sure! 😂
Did you ended up buying the 13"? If so how was the experience? I’m planning on buying one this year and will probably do basic video montage to helps a community ✌️
Thank you ...Finally !!!!!
The first 3 minutes told me all I needed to know lol
Pressing the upvote button before even watching Max's videos simply because his work reviewing Macs is amazing as always. Anyone else with me on this?
yes
Grazie Max. Molto bravo.
Got a 16" base model at the beginning of the year for video (FCPX) and photo editing. Works great. No complaints. My laptop is no longer the bottleneck in my workflow.
@Ethan Gabriel Using it every day for FCPX and Photoshop and no complaints. I'm doing RUclips videos and music videos, so nothing like a full feature film. Photoshop slows down a bit if I have a lot of layers, but that's not usually a problem. I do not do any gaming. All business. :-)
@Ethan Gabriel I got it in January of this year, but yes, it's a 2019.
@Ethan Gabriel No problem!
I got the 13 inch with Maxed Out Specifications and it does pretty well on premiere playing back 4K, until effects get applied onto it which isn’t a hassle. Thanks for the feedback though. I am waiting for a 16 inch ARM as my next machine
Thank you! As a film major in college, I’m sticking with the 13” :))
All of the comparison videos you guys have been doing really has helped me pick the right MacBook Pro I do video editing (on premiere pro & after effects) with lots of effects, some photo editing and graphic design on photoshop
Would you mind sharing which model you ultimately settled on?
Aivlysm69 I ended up getting the base model 16 inch from b&h had it since May it’s runs beautifully I’ve been able to edit in premiere have photoshop up to do some things and after effects highly recommend
Thank you for making up my mind Max. I will be buying the 16in Macbook for video editing!!
Very nice information! Also would like to know if the keyboards are the same size? Or in the 16" each key is bigger or it is the same size but just more spread between each key?
Brilliant video Max, thx for the comparison! Certainly made me feel better going for the 16inch now.
I'm stoked to test it. Coming from the 13inch mid-2014 I think it'll be quite fun!
Hello Max! Can you please share the Apps you use to monitor CPU and GPU consumption? The ones on your "Status Menu" bar. I like a lot your videos!!! Thanks.
If you ever read this, thank you. This was the video that helped me decide to buy the 16" MacBook Pro. The first computer I own after not using any computers for 9 years.
So use either Resolve or Fcpx. Got it! 😂
Awesome content as usual!!! I may be the only one asking, but can we see the 2.3 GHz i7 2020 13” MBP versus anything you’d like to compare it to? Perhaps, the base 13” MBP, the $1800 4 port model, the 16”, and anything else you want to throw in? I realize the take rate on that option may not be high, but it would be cool to see where that model stands along with all the others.
Very useful benchmarking, I really learn from your video. BTW what apps you use to display CPU Temp and Cooling Fan Speed?

Max could you made the comparisson with Razed Blade Stealth 2020
thanks man, first video on youtube to care about premiere on mac
Too bad premiere is worse than the other two now. I have been using premiere up until now. I think I’m moving to FCPX
Hello Max, would you recommend a 13" + egpu instead of a 16" for video editing?
Hi Max, in the video you say that it's not worth getting the 13'' Pro for editing in Premiere - do you think it'll be as bad in After Effects? I will be editing 1080p! Please help
Thankx for the great comparison max. We would love to see comparison between new dell xps 15/17 vs mac pro 16 2020.
We would be more appreciated. We know youre apple fan but we would love to see. Thank you.
Thank you
The only thing I missed in this comparison is a fan noise! It'd be PERFECT!!!!
Max, can you try some of the tests again with the 14.2 release of Premiere Pro? Namely the H.264 render. It would be great to see the difference 14.2 makes compared to what we've had before.
Thanks for this great video. Also Can I ask you that is there any big difference between i5 2ghz and i7 2.3ghz in video editing? Both 13” have 16gb and 512gb ssd.
Hi Max, Do you also test 3D rendering like animation software or engines?
I got my 16" and it's really really great specially keyboard and thermals.
Can you please explain how can I add temperature, fan speed, glu and CPU usage indicator on my screen same as you.
It's called Intel Power Gadget
Can buy istats menu app
Try Google. Tons of applications to suit your needs.
@@ethanHat I think he means the one on the top toolbar.
Search how to fix macbook pro 16 Don’t return it. He explain all
i love you Max :D
What would you suggest for someone that does mainly photo editing and some video editing, up to 4K 30 480mbps, but is not doing it fully professionally? (although still at a relatively high level) Do you think the 13” with 16GB and i5 would be enough?
Would getting the i7 version of the 13inch be as good as the 16in MacBook Pro as it is a bit cheaper even when adding Final Cut Pro on top?
What about an external graphics drive? Would that help the performance for editing?
Max, when you reviewed the MBP 16" when it came out you, recommended 8gb of ddr6 for video editing but in this video you used the model with 4gb of ddr6. Is the 8gb not worth the extra $200?
This one is the base model which is closer to the 13'' which makes the decision harder because they are closer in specs than the upgraded card. The extra $200 is for an upgraded graphics card and 4 more gigs of gddr6 memory.
Déjà vu... 😉 Glad you fixed the '!T' issues and thanks again for making these comparison reviews. ☮
I do little to no video, but quite a bit of photo editing. I’m assuming the 13” with 32GB of RAM is the right choice? I also have a 2018 iPad Pro which I can use an a video option if needs be.
If I get the 13” would it be compatible with after effects? (For video editing, each video will be only one minute long but with lots of effects)
Nice comparison! You should try LumaFusion on the iPadPro to see how this compares...
Helo there, I’ve really enjoyed your channel and already watch several of your video especially about the guide to buy a MacBook. But to make myself clear, can you advice me the right choice between a MacBook Pro 13” 2020 $1799 or the MBP 16”? I Plan to make a youtube channel and make video editing for my client using Final Cut Pro with color grading, transition, effect, etc. and maybe some photo editing.
My concern is the most efficiency and efective cost, I’m affraid If I go with MBP 16” it will overkill my need and the opposite I’m affraid If I go with MBP 13” it lack of my requirement. I’ve have no idea which one will suit me perfectly. My Choice is:
1. MBP 13” 2020 with 10th Intel Core i5 Quad-Core 2,0GHZ, LPDDR4X 3733 Mhz 16Gb and 1TB SSD Storage
2. MBP 16” 2019 with 9th Intel Core i9 8-Core 2,3GHZ, DDR4 2666 Mhz 16GB and 1TB SSD Storage
Between this two, Which one will suit perfectly for me and it will be My only video editing machine. I love the compact size of MBP 13” but not sure about its performance and I love the raw power of MBP 16”, its like can kill everything with that. Btw maybe in the future I will get the iMac for my dekstop, so which one you’ll recomende to make a purchase between those two? Please Help me mate..
NB: In My Country I can’t upgrade MBP freely, so the choice is only that two and no option tu upgrade partially :(
This is a no brainer, Max. How about a video where you run the XDR off the MacBook Air? Now THAT would be entertaining.
Please compare the MacBook Pro with the new XPS 17
So is 16gb of ram enough for video editing? Because I’m torn between getting the standard MacBook Pro 16 or getting the dell xps15 & upgrade it to 32gb of ram
Hello thanks for your video.
In a mac book pro 13 2020 10 gen if upgrade ram to 32gb what do you think? Would be a big change more fast? It will heat up. Thanks
Are you using resolve studio or the free version for these tests?
What would be the best spec for photo editing?
Can you recommend an external keyboard for the MacBook pro 13 inch. I need to use it for a special need with an external left/right click mouse for daily use
Do you think it’s worth waiting for a potential Mini LED screen next year?
Hi Max, could you please cover this 13" with an eGPU vs the 16" MBP? Would love to see how this affects the BRAW video editing in particular. Thanks a lot!
Could you maybe compare the performance in Logic Pro X? Bounce times as well as track count limits etc. Thanks!
Max pls Premiere 14.2 benchmark test. Is Premiere Finally faster then Final Cut?? With the new hardware accelerationnn...
Thank you so much max. This was exactly what I was look for as I’m in the market for a new computer 💯💯💯
Hi Max, great video as always.
I am looking to buy the 13 or 16 to replace my 2017 13’ but not sure which. I use a Vega 56 Egpu to keep my machine working on video editing and it does ok.
Are you able to do a similar 13 to 16 inch comparison using an Egpu to see if that helps the 13 inch close the gap?
5300m beats some egpu combos since thunderbolt 3 has limited bandwith.
I need powerful 13 inch mac since I already have a powerful 18 inch windows. I just need it for my "to-go" so I hope they upgrade its graphic cards this coming fall
what about the GPU 5500m 4GB vs 8GB? which is better for 4K editing?
I have the option of getting the 16” inch MBP with the base configs except it has 32gb ram. It has 512gb ssd which isn’t a big deal since most of my video footage is on sd cards and external ssd drives. Do you think I should go for this 32gb ram model or would the Costco base 16” 16gb ram model be good enough for a beginner 4K video editor like myself? Love the videos and all the advice. Thank you!
32GB of ram would future proof yourself at least if were considering multitasking (playing music in the background when editing or if youd want to watch a yt video on an external monitor then this would be more ram intensive). If you are doing 4k video editing it could easily be underkill to go for 512gb because your stuck with large files, but I guess an external ssd would be optional to have your footage on. I just like a little headroom. I do music production with with Logic Pro X and I use photoshop, illustrator, lightroom, premiere pro and after effects , planning to up from 1080p to 4k content with effects. In my case my setup could be considered overkill but this is going to last for a lot of years and that is why i am personally going to get the 16" macbook pro with 32gb ram, 5500M 8gb, i9 4,8 ghz and 1tb ssd.
Does the 2020 13 inch Macbook with the 10th gen experience the same heat and fan noise like the 16 inch Macbook Pro with light task and when idling? It's crazy how unoptimized the 16 MBP is whether it has stronger components/hardware or not...
in terms of video editing for gaming on imovies, which one would you recommend?
Do you think there is more optimization to be done with G7 graphic?
Hey, while exporting a video in premiere pro on a 16" MBP base model, the Radeon high side reaches 57 watts when check in istat. Is that a normal behaviour for the graphics card to draw so much power?
Sir for beginner video editing and to learn about laptop And watching movies
Macbook pro 13 is fine ? Base model
does using high scaled view on macbook affects battery life?
My 16” i9 MacBook Pro has been amazing!
Is the 13 with igpu able to playback H.264 and H.265 4k content smoothly in Davinci Resolve? I know rendering speed is important factor but for me more crucial is to be able to preview clips and timeline without major stuttering while editing. I only do some casual video editing of family travel videos with only a little of color correction and grading (like a few correction plus a single LUT). And with my current older MBP 15 inch with Iris Pro graphics it stutters like hell even with optimized media in use.
Max, did you use to be on Cnet??
Is the 13 inch macbook pro 2020 baseline suitable for video editing???
great! i am struggling to choose which size, lol
Eh i dont like the 16" size and weight, i go with 13" and external GPU. For video editing it might not be 100% great but still helps allot once the softwares get more optimized.
how would the $1800 13" MBP compare to a $1300 i7 Mac Mini + eGPU?
Technology is so good today. That 13 inch can easily handle a 1080p video. I have an asus from 2017. It takes over an hour to render a 4k 5 min video lol.
How do you guys know when 16inch came out , this year or next year?
Has the premiere update changed much for you?
Is Final Cut worth it with the MacBook Pro 2020 with 8 RAM ? I can have it cheaper as a student but if it doesn’t work It’s useless
When I go online they claim 10th gen but then I go into customizing and it only shows 8th gen Intel .... what’s up with that? Idk if I will get 10th gen or not now
How is the 13" MBP size compared to the 12.9 inch iPad Pro? 😊
Please review the new Dell xps 15 and 17
I know we are focusing on the MacBooks but I’m sitting here like ‘premiere pro is slow af’
Yea wtf why is Premiere Pro so slow?
KillBei it’s an amazing program but is not optimized for Apple products. It’s almost like they’re trying to keep people on “team PC/windows”.
Marko Polo shame too. Premiere Pro is an incredibly powerful piece of software especially when paired with After Effects.
I personally use windows but I want to try Mac but this is putting me off tbh
@@dexgray4581 It's not even optimized on windows compared to Resolve on windows. They also favors nvidia gpu's cuda cores.
ZAIN AKBAR just use final cut if you’re about gettinf the macbook
Why isn't this video on Max Tech?
