You are right. The Oil Paint filter is a lot quicker. However it is only in
Photoshop CS6 & CC so it won't be available to all users and you can't get
the custom results you can with the Art History Brush. So, yes it is an
alternative and some users will love that approach. For other users, faster
    won't always mean better!

Great Tutorial, @Helen Bradley! Thank you!
I have a question about why you do this on 2 layers? The under painting layer and the painting layer... Some of the tutorials I have watched use only the background layer and another layer to paint on... What I don't understand is why use the two layers as you have here? Thanks in advance for your comments!

Caleb I always try to use multiple layers as it doesn't 'cost me' anything to do so. The advantage is that if I don't like something on one layer I can easily edit or remove it. If you put everything on one layer then it is an 'all or nothing' solution. Also, adding a layer at the end with just a few paint strokes on it and then applying a Hue/Saturation adjustment to it and changing the colors in a major way can add visual interest to the project - you can't do that when everything is on one layer. I hope this helps?

That is a fine rational! Thank you for answering my question so quickly!

I don't believe it is necessary to remove the CS6 tag because this process works just the same in Photoshop CS6 as shown here. So the video is relevant to anyone using any version of Photoshop that has that tool in it.
