Funny story, when I was in high school the gym class received a bunch of fencing gear. But they didn't get enough masks or coats etc. And the coach let the kids fence anyway. About the second day out one of the swords broke, but the kid using it didn't realize the tip had broken off and promptly ran another student through. (no joke) Fortunately he caught him just under the arm pit and the blade entered over the ribs in front and came out about six or seven inches out the other side. It was quite bloody. Indecently, the sword broke because the knucklehead kids had been using the swords like big broadswords and banging them against each other at right angles and of course and epee isn't meant to be used in that way so the tip broke off. And the kid using it was blind in one eye and didn't see the tip had flown off. .... so a fellow student got run through like a pirate. He was a good kid too. If that happened today I have no doubt there would have been a hell of a lawsuit. (and rightly so)

(the epee is a triangular cross section thrust only sword that originates from france, its basically a bigger version of the smallsword, which is more commonly known by its training analog, the foil. foils originated as a less lethal version of the smallsword, basically, a real, sharp smallsword thats been intentionally made flimsier so that it would cause wounds but not skewer people, became used when duels to the first blood became significantly more popular than to the death. made safe and turned into the fencing foil when duelling was inevitably banned.) i may seem a bit agressive, and thats probably because of all those sport fencing boys saying they would beat historical fencers in a bout with real swords... come on, thats like a skier telling a snowboarder, that theyre better at snowboarding than they are. anyways, fencing of all kinds, very cool and fun. sport fencing is more athletic and competition based, historical fencing is more like a simulation, but theyre both competitive in nature. its kind of like CS:GO and Insurgency.
