    Funny story, when I was in high school the gym class received a bunch of fencing gear.
    But they didn't get enough masks or coats etc.
    And the coach let the kids fence anyway.
    About the second day out one of the swords broke, but the kid using it didn't realize the tip had broken off and promptly ran another student through. (no joke)
    Fortunately he caught him just under the arm pit and the blade entered over the ribs in front and came out about six or seven inches out the other side.
    It was quite bloody.
    Indecently, the sword broke because the knucklehead kids had been using the swords like big broadswords and banging them against each other at right angles and of course and epee isn't meant to be used in that way so the tip broke off. And the kid using it was blind in one eye and didn't see the tip had flown off.
    .... so a fellow student got run through like a pirate. He was a good kid too.
    If that happened today I have no doubt there would have been a hell of a lawsuit. (and rightly so)

      i hope when you say 'broadsword' you mean the double edged, basket hilted english style sword, and not the medieval double edged, cross shaped, simple hilted sword called the arming sword. or god forbid, a bastard sword, which is the slightly longer hilted version of an arming sword to allow room for more than one hand.
      if they really wanted to swing it, why the fuck didnt they just use the anorexic arse sabre?
      this is the problem with making practice swords this thin, they lose a lot of their properties, and they lose mass so they dont behave at all like what theyre supposed to simulate, and also they become considerably less durable, an actual sharp epee (yes, epee is a real type of sword, not just a steel noodle) would have definitely devoured those strikes, and asked for seconds.
      (the epee is a triangular cross section thrust only sword that originates from france, its basically a bigger version of the smallsword, which is more commonly known by its training analog, the foil. foils originated as a less lethal version of the smallsword, basically, a real, sharp smallsword thats been intentionally made flimsier so that it would cause wounds but not skewer people, became used when duels to the first blood became significantly more popular than to the death. made safe and turned into the fencing foil when duelling was inevitably banned.)
      i may seem a bit agressive, and thats probably because of all those sport fencing boys saying they would beat historical fencers in a bout with real swords... come on, thats like a skier telling a snowboarder, that theyre better at snowboarding than they are.
      anyways, fencing of all kinds, very cool and fun. sport fencing is more athletic and competition based, historical fencing is more like a simulation, but theyre both competitive in nature. its kind of like CS:GO and Insurgency. Insurgency is more immersive, realistic, with non-existing UI, and horrifyng, slow paced combat, CS:GO is all about the e-sports aspect, its fun and it doesnt have to be grounded in reality, its just satisfying, though both have competitive scenes (Insurgency's is kind of dead though, if you add an active competitive scene, that might be a better analogy).
      its when i think about it too much, i go nuts over sport fencing
      if youd ever want to take an interest in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts, basically historical fencing + unarmed combat and things that arent swords such as spears, polearms, daggers, axes, maces, hammers, etc. and also combinations of weapons like sword and buckler, sword and dagger, sword and cape/cloak, sword and shield, spear and shield, etc. as well as medieval armoured combat, which is trying to stab gaps, using blunt trauma, and a lot of grappling. all pulled from historical sources and manuscripts.
      one key difference you will see is, it doesnt matter if you hit first, its whoever hits, not whoever hits first, so its defence first, and defence after. after blows and doubles are either not rewarded, or punished, you should raise up to guard after you stike. grazes and nicks, as well as cuts with insufficient rotation or strikes that land flat arent counted. stationary weapons can be grabbed, as theyre just simulating sharp pieces of steel and not lightsabres.

      A cutlass is a type of Sabre, it's just shortened for Naval warfare on board tight ship spaces, like the Hanger, is just a shortened Sabre designed for tight city spaces by police officers and city guard. If we trace the Sabre roots, it goes from western Europe, to Hungary, to Poland, and then through the Turks and Ottomans back to the Shamshir and Middle eastern type Scimitars. The Sabre is basically a Shamshir with a complex more advanced Hilt.

    • @tobybrewer193
      @tobybrewer193 10 лет назад

      Foil is a weapon of convention so you need the right of way to attack which is a bit dumb considering if you have just been killed in a duel you can't say no you should be dead but épée has the whole body target instead of torso and you can hit any time so epee has no right of way and the most realistic rules for a duel (first blood.)

    • @tomsta117
      @tomsta117 9 лет назад +1

      Toby Brewer Foil fencing was developed as a sport following the outlawing of duelling in Europe. The sport was developed along with similar rules to contemporary sports popular among the aristocracy (the duelling class), such as racket and ball games.

      @tobybrewer193 9 лет назад

      Blade weight, shape, guard, length, rigidity, target area, and right of way. The èpèe is heavier, triangular in shape, longer, but sometimes the same length, and the bell guard is larger, and covers the wrist just about entirely. The epee’s blade is more rigid, and consequently has a little less flex than the èpèe. The target area of the èpèe is all of the fencer’s body, and the foil’s target area is just the fencer’s torso. Finally, is a principal in foil and sabre fencing called right of way, which essentially determines hit priority (For example an attack has priority over an counterattack.), but the right of way does not apply to èpèe fencing. A simultaneous hit (forty milliseconds) between two fencers will result in both fencers receiving one point.

      hunter solar Problem with sabre is that it's over in seconds. Both fencers charge in, perhaps one parry is made, and then a point is scored almost immediately.

      Jesus Christ man, had a stroke? It’s flexible for the sake of shock absorption, so that you’re not being run through with a rigid metal rod. It also helps with durability, as stiffer blades tend to absorb trauma less effectively, making them brittle.

    find it nearly insulting to call those things swords. Those pieces of wire have as much in common with a sword as a popgun has with an actual gun.
    Fencing is a very demanding sport which requires lighting quick reflexes and a lot of body control and strategic thinking. Overall I do not want to come across as condescending, but if you want to do something that resembles real sword fighting, then pick up HEMA.( Historical European Martial Arts.)
    The weapons used in HEMA have weight to them, as much as swords had historically and the techniques employed are meant to get a hit in and not get hit in turn. Seems a bit more realistic then just rushing in for a first hit, without trying to protect yourself from a afterblow/strike.

      When you say "sword", you obviously don't mean epee de combat or smallsword then?

    The evolution of swordsmanship really ruined this for me. Buttons? Orthopedic grips? Hopefully the school I'm eyeballing has a more romantic idea on fencing than this.

      You should google HEMA. Search for Longsword fencing, Rapier fencing or sword and buckler Fencing. Check out the Blood and Iron HEMA RUclips Channel. That is what fencing should be!
