The story of this game gets a lot of flack, but i like it. It's a swashbuckling adventure with goofy humor, amazing music, moments of heart, and addictive gameplay. It's like a playable Saturday morning cartoon
I've heard the story described as a parody of Final Fantasy 4, but aside from Exdeath kind of resembling Golbez and Galuf's Final stand being a more powerful version of Tellah's, I don't see a lot of parallels beyond what one would expect from a new entry in the franchise back before they started getting really extreme in changing up what even constitutes a Final Fantasy game between entries. I think it is because the game just leans into a lighter tone most of the time (which makes the serious and emotional moments all the more impactful) while FF4 plays it serious most of the time, with only rare bits of comic relief, and constantly has playable characters appearing to die with sad music and everything only for all but one of them to get better.
This game is proof that Final Fantasy isnt ONLY about story. If the gameplay isnt good then that brings the story down along with it. Good gameplay can carry a bad story though.
I love this game. My favourite Final Fantasy game. I really wish it was more appreciated by the general public, but the struggles of being released between IV and VI and not originally in English I guess.
5 is my favorite FF too mainly because when it comes to JRPGs I'm actually more about gameplay than story so FF5 was such a treat for me to play for people like me with that motto
One neat aspect that this video overlooked was how the ending of the game is impacted based on if any characters are KO'd at the end of the battle. Those characters won't have the strength to make it out of the void after the battle, which can be a real downer, especially if you don't see it coming. In the last scene after the time skip montage the spirits of Galuf and the other Dawn Warriors are able to bring back anyone that didn't make it out for a happy reunion, but everything up until that point is brought down by the idea that not everyone made it back from that Final battle.

Final Fantasy V is my Final Fantasy VII. This game made me fall in love with RPGs. My brother gave me the PS1 version on the first day of summer vacation as a kid so its full if nostalgia for me. Great video!
Blue Magic is incredibly useful in this game, especially since bosses can be hit with status ailments (I find most RPGs give all bosses immunities yo everything therefore making status ailments rarely useful) But the aero spells, mighty guard, white wind, death 5 and Flare 3 were all so freaking useful
The Job System is amazing. I especially like the GBA version, since it not only has the extra jobs, but passive abilities are automatically equipped on your characters when they switch to Freelancer, making it the ultimate job. Just giving it utility outside of the game's opening hour is good enough, but once you master a bunch of jobs and get the HP and MP bonuses, Dual-wield, and so forth, having them all set simultaneously at no slot cost is broken as hell. There are just so many fun job combinations, and you can always make different characters focus on different jobs on each playthrough, making for a potentially different experience each time. My only gripe is that the story and character development kind of took a step backwards compared to IV, but those were never the real focus. It's all about the jobs, and in that respect, V dominates. Only the Final Fantasy Tactics games have been able to keep pace or excel past V in terms of Job System fun, in my opinion.

This game has so many ways to break it. The Blue Mage job alone can do some insane things. I loved it from the moment I played it as a ROM back in the day. @germanicusternus1982 If you have a lot of Gil, then Gil Toss will nuke everything on screen. Rapid Fire works best on single targets (Neo Exdeath's first form) and Gil Toss is better for multiple targets.

always found the story of this one to be way simpler and less deep than other FFs (but still FUN!!), but everything else... a masterpiece... also has one of my favorite main battle themes
This game's one of my favorites as well. I have fond memories of playing a somewhat unfinished fan translation patch on ZSNES back when I was in high school. When you end up stranded on a small island in the second world, there's normally some character dialogue suggesting you use a tent so that a cutscene can play to advance the plot, but the ROM I was playing merely displayed "Fill in later", so I was stuck there for quite some time, fighting weak enemies until I finally ended up using a tent out of necessity. Them good ol' days of early emulation. XD

After going through the first four games I wanted to start the fifth one immediately, because I love how innovative the job system is. I'm currently playing through FF5 PR right now, and I really enjoy it a lot. Unfortunately I agree with you about the Dragoon class, it certainly could be better. Personally I could combine it with magic jobs for support, or use the dual-wield or two-handed ability to help with damage output. I love how each character sprite for that specific job looks different, might do an all Dragoon setup here soon after I master a few other jobs. Great video!
Mystic Knight is far from niche, since you can utilize it with the dual wield from ninja and rapid-fire from Archer. Just slap Flare enchant on your weapon and the damage skyrockets, and drain works good too before you learn that.
Yeah, I wish I woulda used it more. It seemed interesting but I never really wanted to spend time casting Spellblade in each combat encounter to utilize it
@@sunderwire Understandable, I think its only necessary for bosses, but when you finish enough jobs and go to freelancer I think its a safe thing to slot in, since Drain handles any HP loss you could get, and flare is just an insane buff that eats 75% of your opponents defense and increases Battle Power by 100. Zeninage is all you need for most random encounters, or a dual Air Knife equipped Syldra summon like my friend used when he finished FF5 2 days ago.
@@RyuseiiTheCrimsonKingOh yes, for my maxed Freelancer I chose the Mystic Knight ability and the Rapid fire. Dual wield, Thundaga on the blades, Rapid fire, and Omega was down with this one combo.
However MOST of the time odds are you will have 4x LV 15 party members BEFORE entering the Library itself only to have lv 5 death kill EVERYONE to avoid that but still LEARN it you need to only have it kill 1 party member not all 4 at once. I believe they changed it to Ex Death because its FULL official name would NOT fit on screen due to character limitations of naming party members/bosses back in the day.
My favorite part of the game is replaying it as different classes that you don't even want to use - it can be beat with practically any combination you just have to do it differently, and that's cool.
You know I was born when the first one came out it thought me how to read and count, even when our nes broke I would draw ff1 on the wall I was crazy for it. Though the years I played all others except this one until last year on my phone and it was probably the third best ff that I had played thought. First is ff 1 then ff12 and now ff5
my first experience with FFV game was with the Final Fantasy Chronicles. Thought of it as a better FF1 with the job classes and how the mix and match improved the characters' customization. Also great references to FF4 and later games, such as Galuf giving his life comparable to Tellah, Gogo who could come back in FF6 like how Gilgamesh 'travels' to future games, berserker class of Umaro, Exdeath reminding of Golbez, moogles brought in and used on later games, etc. I believe i had the FFV four episode anime first however which is supposed to take place 200 years in the future. the only character that connects it is Mid's ghost. neat quick video and story.
Great video! I actually think that Final Fantasy 5 is underrated and the most representative game in the franchise--or at the very least, representative of "classic" Final Fantasy.
This was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and beat. That was over a year ago now and it’s what started my journey with this amazing franchise! It was my first, and still my favorite!
I am currently on a quest to beat all the final fantasy games from my childhood. Im really looking forward to this one since it wasnt available when i was a kid.
8:30 Theres also a weapon that hits twice that can be dual wielded. Giving you a max of 16 hits. Combine that with Guard from knights and Counter, and you got a character whose basically a vengeful buzz saw.
I think five is one of the best candidates for a remake. It's well liked but not held on a pedestal like 6, and its job system makes it one of the deepest games in the franchise.
If not remake, they really should try to bring its jobsystem at least to next gen. Modern FFs would really benefit something like a jobsystem as their gameplay core.
FF5 was my first FF i played. I bought the Gameboy Advance version of it in 2009. Such a cool game with lovable characters and good story. Im now playing the snes version on a english patched cartridge. Cant wait for the re release of the pixel remaster
This game came as a shock to me when i played it on Chronicles. Job system, story and music blew me away... My 2nd fave 2d FF rpg after 6... My fave job combo was Ferris + lancer
It's also my favourite and mechanically the best game in the series. The only FF game with genuine build crafting, a good amount of missable secrets, blue magic that is actually challenging to find and powerful to use, all the good stuff that I like in a FF game.
A bit of extra history, FFV was the first RPG to be fully translated by fans, and that translation came out almost one year before the PS1 anthology. That first fan translation is also regarded more highly than the official anthology translation. So in truth any RPG fan internet savvy enough at the time first experienced Final Fantasy V through the Wild West of 90’s emulation.
Freelancer and Mime is OP once you master other jobs, as they get the passive abilities and stat bonuses from those. This makes it so Mime isn't just good for 3 different ability slots, but it's super OP from all the passive abilities and stat bonuses, and can equip anything.
my favorite final fantasy game is crisis core and then in second place it was final fantasy 4/after years. now that I finally played final fantasy 5 thanks to the pixel remaster, is definitely my number two! 🔥🔥
Why is it so awesome? It's the ultimate culmination of the original job system. In FF1, you chose a single job from a handful of jobs that could then be upgraded once. In FF3, you had a much larger list of jobs to choose from. Each job had a special ability and you could switch jobs at will. In FF5, the depravity of the job's system knows no bounds. With an even larger collection of jobs, you could then master certain abilities and port them to other jobs. It allowed for endless possibilities in battle.
The Magic Pot yields 100 AP; you had the quadruple booster on. Just back at this video now that I've finished the game for the second time - I'd had a lot of cursed attempts to finish it over the course of my life where my save would be lost along with whatever the save file was stored on :P
When I was a teenager I grabbed this on emulator when it was only a fan translation. It was beyond rough and I remember being destroyed nearly every step of the way especially the void. The blood sword on faris was sheer luck in that it does massive damage to ex death, no idea why.
I played this for the first time and i'm 46 years old now, this game is truly a great great great game, sure the story and character's feel kinda undercooked but i think a lot of those opinions are comparing 5 to FF6 i think people forget that this game came out in 1991 or 1992 the long scripted stories of 6 and 7 especially were simply not seen in that era or the early 90's, i think personally ffv story is short sweet and to the point and i actually think it helps the game out because you can focus on this really cool game rather than get bogged down thinking about who's bartz girlfriend and i wonder what kinda chicks galuf is into, i have had a smile on my face the whole time playing this game and i'm really glad i tried it out it really is a good rpg that has lots of interesting things to see and do and took me back to when games were really well designed and the game is all that mattered
Good video! I just finished FFV about a month ago and I was really surprised at how good the game was. Much better than all the games before it in my opinion, but it's totally overlooked in the series! I'm playing through FFVI now since I want to go through them all in order. Maybe we'll finish them around the same time, as it looks like you're doing the same thing lol. Stop playing with such a high exp multiplier though. 1.0x or nothing ;)
Yea I got platinum without those boosts, so everything on 1. My favorite FF is 12 Zodiac Age btw, but its really important you do all sidestuff, its the best.
@Vayne_Solidor I have been sitting on Zodiac Age for over a year because my potato computer runs it slowly, and I refuse to play it like that! Plan on upgrading soon so I can play it as it was meant to be played! But I absolutely enjoyed the few hours I did put in.
"you get more than enough time to get out safely" unless you missed a treasure somewhere and are trying to find it. I had like 5 seconds left on the clock once I beat the claw guy
In FFIV you spend half the game with an unbalanced party while Cecil is OP and carries you. Then Cecil’s usefulness waxes and wanes depending on weapon while his magic grows less and less useful with no new spells. So eventually your two casters carry you once you have a full party. Edge sucks bawls. This guy is a dual wielded who does no damage, WTF??. Cecil is barely better. Kane sucks too but at least he takes less damage because he jumps. Fuck that game. The only cool parts are the aliens, and the special forces unit. And the dwarf tanks. Also the giant robot is cool. Especially for the time. But man that gameplay is either trivial or unfair/gimmicky. There are almost no balanced fights in the whole game. The only fight I actually enjoyed was the summon queen.
I love Anthology. I prefer the job class system and being able to change jobs focusing on leveling only 4 characters. As much as I love the story of 6, having so many characters to manage leveling and learning magic etc can be a pain for me. I love both games for different reasons.
FFV deserves all the love it is finally getting, it is so much more fun than 4 (IV is my first FF, it is amazing, but V is so underrated, and it is just more fun and with an amazing gameplay!
After mastering all jobs, I go back to freelancer because it gets all the passive abilities of the other jobs though by the time I mastered all the jobs from the wind crystal my freelancer party was too powerful and I missed a few bosses because the boss at the north mountain didn't call her friend, meaning I couldn't register her partner
Common misconception, white wind does not fully heal the party. It heals the party for the amount of HP the caster has at the time. So if you cast it with 100HP, you are only healing for 100.
I got to agree with some of the comments. The tone is just slightly too goofy if you're coming off of this from FFVI like a lot of people did. Or gawd forbid 7 or 8. Not that FFVI isn't more goofy than I remember it. FFIV was fairly serious too. That gameplay though? Absolutely perfect. And I wouldn't dare want to darken the tone this game has.
I’m playing through it yet again right now It’s kind of weird. I’m currently homeless and for the first time in my life I have no friends either. It’s very lonely and stressful Luckily I bought all the games for switch before I was homeless so I have them to keep me from going crazy
Highly recomend play FF5 custom class v1.5 on gba (maby they update version im not sure) yes somene modify class system in game rest like story etc its orginal. Why its so rgood ? Many classes got refresh and more balance skill and freelancer got 3 abiltys to chose not 2 this give more strategy way to play , great mod . If we talking about ff5 is awesome great adventyre even if story is very simple there is some plot twist what can suprise is much beter in fights than ff6 , ff6 figts and enemis are boring most of the time there is pure dmg and thats it in ff5 yes the game is not very hard but especial in second half there is much more strategy and thinking becose many enemis got some mechanic like " if you attack this enemy melle then he smash you with some abilitis or spell you nedd to pay more attetion to whats goin on. Awesome game
Idk how anyone could think FF IV is better. Some of the story is good in FF IV but the gameplay sucks in that one. I think I enjoy the original better than IV. V is everything that the original set out to accomplish.
FFV is a great game and I really enjoy it. But, this was when FF was at its best IMO FF4-9. So, its ranked 4th best out of those for me. Thats like saying Larry Holmes is the 4th best HW boxer of all time though. Only legends below and above him
I'm going back playing these games for the first time and honestly I kinda hate the ATB system, I want to take my time and this just always feels rushed. I also do not like that a lot of these are more like puzzles to figure out instead of straight up bosses to just beat up. It feels like the game has an idea for how you should approach a boss and anything else is not a valid option. It's fun enough but I do not think I will play again.
@@vidyastuff3509 Why thank you, I will continue to do exactly that. But I have to ask; you don't think it's a bit odd to judge the difficulty of gamecompletion, when boosters are used that heavily?
13:47 - spoiler alert... I named him "Butts". Not even "Butz" as unofficial translations would call him. Just... "Butts" ... and Butts shall have to live with this shame through my entire playthrough. Which may take months.
speaking of ff5 and 10 connections both blue magic and mix were op so 10 "balanced" them by making htem overdrives fine for mix i guess but poor khimari bad starting point on the board and under tuned overdrives other than mighty-gaurd.

Yeah MK is basically an upgraded knight that can create that ridiculous combo.
Thanks! Yeah it is underrated for sure, the job system is just amazing in FF5
This was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and beat. That was over a year ago now and it’s what started my journey with this amazing franchise!
It was my first, and still my favorite!
best final dungeon of any ff games. music kicks ass.
Bro this is a fantastic video, keep up the good work, subbed
Thanks!
This is my favorite game in the series, I think. I adore the characters, the charm, the battle system, and my god, the music! Such a delight.
I am currently on a quest to beat all the final fantasy games from my childhood. Im really looking forward to this one since it wasnt available when i was a kid.

Theres also a weapon that hits twice that can be dual wielded.
I love Duel Classing a Bluemancer & a Duel Bell Geodaner & Red Bard & Summon Sword 😂
The customization is endless!
@@sunderwireyea but I avoid Warror-Bazrker-Hunter-Dragoon-Fighter-Thif
I also Made a Paladin-Sage-Holy Monk
Don’t mind me. Just waiting for the FFVI video now.
Playing through this game right now and almost finished. Probably has my favorite combat out of any of the FF games

Appreciate it!
Blue magic is a super interesting mechanic? What a super idea from a super informative book report.
cringe comment award 🥉
Why is it so awesome? It's the ultimate culmination of the original job system. In FF1, you chose a single job from a handful of jobs that could then be upgraded once. In FF3, you had a much larger list of jobs to choose from. Each job had a special ability and you could switch jobs at will. In FF5, the depravity of the job's system knows no bounds. With an even larger collection of jobs, you could then master certain abilities and port them to other jobs. It allowed for endless possibilities in battle.
Most of the team learn she is a woman much earlier in the story (at the inn), only Lenna doesn't know when they get to the ship.
Finally! Let’s goooo!
V is top for me alongside IV and IX.
The Magic Pot yields 100 AP; you had the quadruple booster on.
Just back at this video now that I've finished the game for the second time - I'd had a lot of cursed attempts to finish it over the course of my life where my save would be lost along with whatever the save file was stored on :P
the pixel remaster is missing the bonus dungeon. where you could face against Enuo.
Yeah, thats a shame they didn't include the bonus content
@@sunderwire at least there’s the gba version
Why does every RUclipsr say “Developed by Square Enix” when discussing events that took place before the merger? This was developed by Square.
Heh yeah nice catch, saying Square Enix is just a habit, I added the square logo in the video but my brain still wanted to say Enix lol
Doesn't help that Square is now the name of a company that does card payment devices.

You din't kill the queen. Go to Karnak's inn. She's resting there, severly wounded, but alive.
One of my top favorites to play.
"you get more than enough time to get out safely" unless you missed a treasure somewhere and are trying to find it. I had like 5 seconds left on the clock once I beat the claw guy
Thanks for the great video.
Glad you liked it!
This one did the job system very well. I usually hate job systems in my rpgs.
It's sprite work and characters are what makes it amazing to me.
I wish you're continue with this serie
FFV deserves all the love it is finally getting, it is so much more fun than 4 (IV is my first FF, it is amazing, but V is so underrated, and it is just more fun and with an amazing gameplay!
After mastering all jobs, I go back to freelancer because it gets all the passive abilities of the other jobs though by the time I mastered all the jobs from the wind crystal my freelancer party was too powerful and I missed a few bosses because the boss at the north mountain didn't call her friend, meaning I couldn't register her partner
being late to videos like this makes me wonder, did i miss when this man just cooked non stop?
Hands down has been my favourite FF ever since first playing it as a kid. But there's only one issue here: why not Butz
The most replayable final fantasy, i loved it
Common misconception, white wind does not fully heal the party. It heals the party for the amount of HP the caster has at the time. So if you cast it with 100HP, you are only healing for 100.
This is my fave ff game. I was laughing like an idiot the whole way.
did you do the fiesta!?
I don't think so, what is the fiesta?
@@sunderwire 4 job fiesfa is a challenge run. you get a one random job per crystal (and some additional rules in place)
its fun! look it up
1) XIV
2) VIII
3) VII
4) V
V is THAT great!!!
I’m playing through it yet again right now
It’s kind of weird. I’m currently homeless and for the first time in my life I have no friends either. It’s very lonely and stressful
Luckily I bought all the games for switch before I was homeless so I have them to keep me from going crazy
Hopefully everyone here also plays and enjoys 14!
Btw, FFV was released with FFIV in EU. :) FF6 was separate here.
In FF14 blue mage is so op they had to make it the first non normal class by making it pve only.
It's the job classes for me
It's probably going to be overrated, but i'll try it one day
It's not a game you play for its story; it's a game you play for its mechanics.
Bear that in mind and I think you'll enjoy it.
Final Fantasy V is my favorite.
Curenntly play ff 5 gba version now n grind those job now at Bal castle basement
Idk how anyone could think FF IV is better. Some of the story is good in FF IV but the gameplay sucks in that one. I think I enjoy the original better than IV. V is everything that the original set out to accomplish.
I liked 4 more originally but I changed my mind after realizing the massive flaws the story has so the gameplay of 5 was able to raise it above 4
The story about japanese authorities asking not to release the game on school days is not only fake, but about Dragon Quest 4 or so
Dude Bartz best friend is a chocobo I mean come on. How cool is that?
Dude its soooooo good. Unless you are trying to get the Tinkle Bell…lol
I'm all for playing games "your way", but using the boosts & grinding so much that the game isn't anything but a formality, irks me a bit.
Then don't do that?
@@vidyastuff3509 Why thank you, I will continue to do exactly that. But I have to ask; you don't think it's a bit odd to judge the difficulty of gamecompletion, when boosters are used that heavily?
The job system is fun but that's about as far as I can get a credit for.
I love this game
Great game, I hope you do ff6 vídeo
This game is a masterpiece, but still seem to be a bit underrated.
13:47 - spoiler alert... I named him "Butts". Not even "Butz" as unofficial translations would call him. Just... "Butts" ... and Butts shall have to live with this shame through my entire playthrough. Which may take months.
Also, I do enjoy oversized gluteus maximi, and I am in fact, in this regard, incapable of speaking a fabrication.
speaking of ff5 and 10 connections both blue magic and mix were op so 10 "balanced" them by making htem overdrives fine for mix i guess but poor khimari bad starting point on the board and under tuned overdrives other than mighty-gaurd.
Man.. FF5 is my favorite mainline game in the series. It kills me that I need to stop watching your video so early on because you played the god awful discrace that is the pixel remaster.
Yeah FF5 is great! And Lol!!
ga-loof? ive never heard it pronounced it that way, ive always heard
gal-uhf
It was made by squaresoft not enix
