  • This game is incredibly deep and well-balanced - what happens if we push that to its breaking point by ignoring all its basic mechanics? Hey there guys, NovemberJoy here, and welcome to the Reptile Rumble! Today, let's find out if you can beat Final Fantasy 5 without jobs or armor! Instead of Four Job Fiesta, I decided to do NO Job Fiesta, and the results might just be interesting!

    39:27 there’s an even cheaper strategy for taking out the sea trench bosses.
    None of them are immune to instant death. One of the Magic Lamp’s summons is Odin. The lamp version of Odin will always attempt to use Zantetsuken (inflicts instant death on all enemies) instead of Gungnir.
    This means that if you use the Magic Lamp to summon Odin, he will instantly kill all 3 bosses in the fight.

      I absolutely love FFV. I have a vivid childhood memory of playing it with my little brother on the anthology disc with FFVI, on a playstation in a hotel room. We were evacuating from a hurricane so basically trapped in a hotel room for several days, but we remembered to grab the PS1. I don't remember if we finished the game but I remember loving the way the job system was implemented in FF5.

    Literally my (current) favorite take on the job system. I loved having Bartz as the back row support while Lenna was the physical DPS.

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  5 месяцев назад +23

      This is still my favorite take on the job system. It nails a lot of things, ranging from being able to mix and match abilities to giving almost every job some good utility and/or damage to rely on, but the thing I think it does best is being able to swap your build on a whim. In Bravely Second, I picked up a mage asterisk later in the game and I basically can't use it unless I grind several job levels because it can only use the first-level spells even if you have it as your current job. Meanwhile in FF5, if you want to use magic you can just become a mage and you have access to every spell from that category at the cost of low HP and physical stats alongside worse equipment options. Gaining job levels in FF5 feels more like a reward for using the class that you can carry to other classes as opposed to Bravely Second where it feels like a necessary chore just to be able to use the class in any effective capacity. Thanks for coming to my TED talk, and hope you enjoyed the video!

    • @SnancyNegative

      @@NovemberJoy I only have two genuine complaints about FF5's Job system: Red Mage and Dragoon. And they aren't so much complaints about the job system and more about the jobs themselves.
      Red Mage is a decent job in the early game, but falls off harder than a motorcycle into the grand canyon, which REALLY isn't good if you're doing a Four Job Fiesta and didn't roll White Mage or Black Mage. Otherwise, the only reason to use Red Mage is to get Dualcast, which isn't even good ON Red Mage because they can only cast level 3 white and black magic. So during a FJF you'll just stick them with an enhancer or grind staves of light in world 2 for three hundred hours because that's the only way they can do decent damage otherwise.
      Dragoon, on the other hand, suffers from "The Devs thought this was going to be too good" syndrome and, as a result, CANNOT HOLD SPEARS IN TWO HANDS. You know... like how spears are often held. I get maybe if the reigning thought was "If we have them able to hold them in two hands they'll just equip doublegrip and do exclusively that", because yeah, players would absolutely exclusively make dragoons have doublegrip. Because SPEARS SUCK! And with a lack of ability to do their thing well because jumping requires a spear to do double damage (which is apparently a different thing than double battle power), they are literally just a worse Knight who can't do damage outside of whatever abiliity you saddle them with.
      Thank YOU for coming to MY TEDx talk, and yes, I am very much so enjoying the video ^^

    ITs really interesting to see how challenging these bosses really could be, if we hadn't figured out ways to absolutely break the hell out of the game with class combos. If you're willing to take on a different challenge for final fantasy 5, I want to know "can you 100% final fantasy 5 with one character?" Essentially, you need to take one character and max them out on every class in the game. And get all the collectibles and optional bosses with only one character doing everything (with the expectations of course involving story forced player moments where you can't play as certain characters)

    • @NovemberJoy

      @@arciks11 solo zerker can beat the game, but it requires a glitch only available on the SNES version. There's a video of the Neo Exdeath fight on RUclips. That run can't do every side content though. For example, Omniscient at Fork Tower is doable with only Berserkers, but you need more than one so you can time the Mage Masher Silence procs with another hard hitting attack in order to avoid the reset

      Yeah, trying to master jobs anywhere besides the very beginning areas of the game or the final Void area will leave you extremely overleveled due to how much extra EXP you'll gain along the way. A standard playthrough without grinding will reach about level 38 or so, while my first complete playthrough was about level 50 due to taking the Brave Blade and never escaping from any encounter. I think I got through this challenge without having to overgrind too much!

  • @dryzalizer
    @dryzalizer 3 месяца назад +1

    Congrats! When I saw your title I didn't think you'd have too much trouble since defense isn't that important in the game. Not allowing any accessories though, that does create a lot of problems. You missed a few minor strats but were able to find your own way through anyway, well done! There are some more bosses you can blind with the darkness bow, and weapons like the sage staff do 8x damage in big chunks to undead while the apollo harp does 8x damage to undead AND dragons (sorry, Bahamut is not flagged as a dragon but the Grand Cross part of NeoExDeath is). The flat 50% chance to inflict paralysis on hit from certain whips is definitely clutch, glad you made good use of it.

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  Месяц назад

      I figured there probably were more enemies I could blind, but there weren't too many foes that I felt the need to blind throughout the game and blindness sadly has no visual indicator of when it's been inflicted. Honestly, the gameplay design in this game is so good that's its possible to beat the game with every job by itself, and with a single character. Except 1, and that's Berserker. Solo Character Berserker can make it to the final boss, but beating it is so RNG heavy you could beat the game solo as every other job(Even the GBA ones) before it defeats Neo Exdeath.

    Also- clearly 15:30 shows that there is precedent in universe that wildly beating someone with your fists snaps them out of negative mental states, so Mid's wild punching of Grandpa Cid is diegetic. Simply beat the brain demons out of your loved ones folks.

    Some strategies I remember from a few of my Fiesta runs.
    Tyranosaurus in World 2 is undead so force feeding an Elixir or Phoenix Down takes care of it
    With Omniscient one of the enemies in Castle Exdeath drops a Power Staff whose sole function is to inflict Berserk.
    For 4 Crystal fight killer Bow also has a change to insta kill them although Death Sickle had a better rate of proc.
    Rune Blade was actually quite useful in a 4 Red Mage run I once did. It powers up with MP you have and it stacks if character is zerked.
    Omega is generally considered to be the harder of the two because in a 4 job fiesta scenario there are fewer options that can shut him down.
    Another option with Catastrophe is to just have more Ancient Swords. They can be stolen in Desert area in the overworld as common steal.
    45:20 that stupid rare outcome is one of more reliable ways to farm Dragon Whisker from Shinryu in a normal-ish run. Hermes Boots wearing character swipes at Shinryu with Thief Knife and then you run from the battle before Shinryu has time to Tidal Wave you (Said fight also is rather easy to run from.)
    Almagest part is succeptible to both Old and Petrify so in a desperate sotuation you could have a party of 4 swinging at it with Ancient Swords to weaken it.

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  5 месяцев назад

      I knew about the Tyrannosaur strat, but I wanted to do it without cheesing it with a Phoenix Down.
      I didn't know about the Power Staff drop, but I'm glad I didn't end up needing it!
      I kinda forgot about the killer bow, honestly, and I never realized the Rune Edge could be useful! It makes sense for a Red Mage run, since Red Mages have relatively few good options for dishing out high damage.
      I was going off my own experience, where the one Fiesta run I did had a relatively easy time with Omega due to having a Bard and Berserker in the party! I can see how he's the harder one, though.
      I didn't know you could get Dragon Whiskers or Ancient Swords that way! It might have been helpful if I knew that, and I definitely didn't know you could age the Almagest part! That would've been a really cool strat to pull off if I knew about it. Clearly, you know a lot more about this game than I do. Thanks for sharing all this info, and hope you enjoyed the video!

    • @arciks11
      @arciks11 5 месяцев назад

      @@NovemberJoy Dragon Whisker strat probably wouldnt've worked in an armorless run. It's very crucial to go before Shinryu, and without Hermes Sandals it's not happening.
      Also what makes Shinryu easier is that he can be Berzerked. And in theory you could Mug farm Dragon Spears from Crystal Dragons in first area of the crystal void.

      Shinryu is generally pretty free if you can berserk and blind it, you just raise people who get one shot occasionally and grind him down. Dragon Whisker and Apollo's Harp do a ton of damage. Omega requires specific strats if you don't have access to some of the more well known setups like !RapidFire Thundaga Blade, and is not always possible in challenge runs

    i always hated how early FFs handled boss status immunity. Either they are immune to everything, or alot of bosses have a single crippling weakness that makes the fight pointless (FF6 im looking at you)
    It would be more fun if bosses had different % susceptibility to various statuses, and for others they work but only last 1 turn or 2 turns depending.. FF10 was decent at this type of thing. That way you can choose to roll the dice in applying status, or just try to power through.

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  4 месяца назад

      Huh...this is an interesting perspective as well! This is the GBA version right? It's weird how that version takes away Cid's glasses with his character portrait, but then gives Mid glasses, when he doesn't have them on his sprite unlike Cid who does. Not sure if I ever noticed that before when I played the GBA port.

    You can actually berserk and blind Shinryu!! He's the easier of the two. Good luck on Omega in this run though 😂

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  4 месяца назад +1

      ...I was not aware you could berserk or blind him! I'd have to do a ton of grinding to be able to survive his opening attack, but otherwise I probably could pull it off in that case. Thanks for the advice!

  • @GaIeforce

    Fun fact: You can skip Neo-Exdeath by doing intense math on your damage, and breaking a Poison Rod (casts Bio, inflicts Sap status) on him to leave him alive with just slivers, with enough remaining HP for the Sap effect to kick in and skip the event trigger that would normally trigger his second phase.
    But that wouldn't make for an interesting video or boss fight. (Besides, you did say you were going to avoid breaking rods) But I figured I'd say this just so that it's known.

    • @arciks11
      @arciks11 4 месяца назад

      Kiss of Blessing Mix also can bypass Neo Exdeath fight but that's outside of this run's scope.

    • @GaIeforce
      @GaIeforce 4 месяца назад

      @@arciks11 Yes. Another thing that can skip NED beyond this run's scope is the blue magic Mind Blast.
      Also outside of this run's scope, if you have access to Time Magic, you could use the Quick spell, and then also inflict Sap on NED using any of these methods, and then idle on the second turn. You could literally just put your controller down and walk away, as Tree Form Exdeath's HP wittles away from all 49001 HP to 0, though this process takes 2 hours to complete without any fast-forwarding functions.
      Sap is just an entirely broken mechanic in this game lol.

    • @NovemberJoy
      @NovemberJoy  4 месяца назад

      Interesting...I knew about the Kiss of Blessing bug, but I wasn't aware killing him with Sap damage would also skip the second phase! Thankfully I didn't have to worry about it, but it would've made an interesting finale of its own to completely skip the second phase.

      Oh yeah, the Freelancer class in the 3D versions of that game do seem a bit underpowered...For the 2D versions, though, the starting class is Onion Knight, and someone out there has already undertaken the pain of an Onion Knight Only challenge in the Pixel Remaster! I commend that guy's fortitude. Maybe I should look into the 3D version's Freelancer class, I swear I've heard something about people attempting jobless runs in FF3 before...

      I was thinking about it, but I decided against it, at least for now, for two reasons. First, there's one section where you absolutely have to use the Beastmaster's Catch ability to catch a specific monster and turn it in before an NPC will give you a necessary item to progress, and as far as I'm aware there's no way to avoid this. Secondly, from a bit of research most of the bosses there don't look too promising even for a max-level party, considering their absurd HP, defense, evasion, and move sets. One even takes a harsher stance than Omniscient and casts Death on itself any time it's hit with a non-magic attack, which fully heals it because it's undead! I might give it a try at a later time if people want to see it, though. Thanks for the suggestion!
