    It can’t come soon enough for me. I am in southern Ontario and have been using Bell cellular service which is slow to non-existent. My monthly cost for the Bell service is around $165 CDN. so Starlink will actually save me money and be a lot faster and more reliable based on reports on channels like this.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      So many stories like this - I don't know how they prioritize access, but I hear from lots of people on the cell internet plans which can be really bad - and expensive like yours. My fingers are crossed for you that they prioritize your area. At least more launches are going up now, so the in-space portion continues to expand - they just need to keep improving user terminal manufacturing!

    I'm hoping for a dish. I ordered one months ago, promised it would arrive in December, then January, and then the end of summer. Now "they" say the end of 2021. The greatest technology ever in the history of the world means nothing if no one can have access to it.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      We're in October now - they've only got three months left of "late 2021" so hopefully they get them out fast! Hopefully this chip shortage starts to let up so they can keep ramping up production!

    Been keeping an eye on starlink since it was named. Been on the waiting list since day one. There are people in all directions of where I am that have dishes so, it's just down to manufacturing I guess. I am tired of waiting and telus is pushing fiber out to more and more rural areas in BC. Whoever gets here first gets my money I guess.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      I definitely think if fibre is available it makes sense to get it for most people. Starlink definitely wins where it's not an option. But even where it is available, it's nice that Starlink is available to avoid a monopoly situation.

    Waiting since February. Worst part is absolutely zero feedback on when I might get my dish. How hard can it be to provide a “you are number X in the queue and then update that once a week or so?

    • @jasonctate
      @jasonctate 3 года назад

      As long as they are in beta there is no “you are number x”. They seem to select a small number of users in a given geographical location for the beta feedback. So if there are testers in your area already, there will be people that get a dish in a new area that may have signed up after you, because again, this is the beta test and they are more interested in evaluating the service across all possible locations. That being said, according to the Starlink site, orders will be filled in the order that they are received, I always assumed that will actually take place once the system is out of beta testing and fully publicly available. So hopefully next month they really will come out of beta and then they may give some kind of queue order.

    I personally think it is way too expensive. Certainly for customers in the U.K. anyway.
    I am buying new fibre for my new home and it costs me £5 delivery then £21 per month without any contract. For that I get average 63mbps and 32mbps upload.
    So starlink would need to come down dramatically to be financially viable but I do get it for people at the equator or Africa, other poor countries or extremely remote populations all over. To me that’s all it’s good for as of now.
    I mean even if I camp in the U.K., my phone gets like 60+ mbps data at minimum.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад +1

      Oh Totally - if you have the option of getting fibre it'll almost always be a better option! Starlink isn't meant to replace £21 per month fibre, but it's an AMAZING option for all over the world where fibre is not available :)
      For me it's about the amazing technology opening up everywhere in the world to high-speed internet :) Thanks for watching!

    Mike lets talk about these cells that are around 15 mile square. Can you tell me me how a satellite 550 KM in space only will cover a 15 square mile radius and if so how would a satellite know where to shoot that beam with the earth spinning. I think their is more involved then that. drop me a line and let me know your thoughts on this.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      Hey Ron! My understanding is that each satellite actually covers many cells that in can "see" from orbit. They reason they divide it up into cells is so they can use different frequencies for different adjacent cells to avoid interference from different user terminals. It also gives them flexibility to limit "hotspots" of demand by ensuring that there aren't too many people in each cell. Thanks for watching and thanks for the great question!

I think im going to wait longer even if beta stops next month since a new designed terminal is coming out as well next few months. Should be better for mobile users. In motion users may still have to wait for that unit.

    I want to use Starlink as a backup to fiber service. But I dislike placing a deposit without any estimated delivery date. For the past year, delivery has said mid to late 2021. How about a delivery month such as October or December? The Tesla model S ordered early January still has not arrived!

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      Yeah, neither Tesla nor SpaceX are known for their accurate delivery estimates. I've heard from a few people who want to use Starlink as a backup. I think that's going to be a big market for anyone who wants a backup that's isolated from regional disruptions. Thanks for watching!

    What have you heard about the rectangular user station? Does it still move or will it be stationary? I think they need the laser units in space so they can be mobile. They can’t guarantee a down station will be available to mobile users until there are enough laser units to pass the download to a down link.
