Yea but I gotta give credit where credit is due.....Peter Jackson before he was well known for making Lord Of The Ring films back in his earlier movie making days with hardly any money made one of the biggest cult followings with the film "Dead Alive aka Brain Dead" it may not have the best storyline or whatever but that movie was definitely memorable for all the blood and Gore and special FX's in that movie and I think it was like only his 2nd film he ever made the first being "Bad Taste" but I agree The Thing has some of the best effects in a movie ever

      You can suggest it yourself
for it to be added to
      The National Film Registry
(you can send them up to 50 choices
per year, of your own choosing).
      25 selections are made
      by The Registry every Dec.
      (almost that time).
I think "The Thing" is impressive,
      but I must point out
      the clear influence
      it had from 1978's
      "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers",
      which I've been suggesting
& which I think is far superior
      to the 1956 original (which
      they've already added).
      Btw, regarding films that have
      similar premises to these,
      I'd recommend "The Hidden" (1987),
      "They Live" (1988)
      & "Fallen" (1998).
      Finally, I personally prefer
the original "The Blob" to the remake.

They said the effects didn't hold up and made it look too much like an 80's movie. I saw the demo reel of the practical behind the scenes stuff and it looked incredible. Rob Botin would have definitely felt honored. Also, the prequel was chronologically in the same year as Carpenter's so why would you not want it to look like an 80's movie?

Harbinger Down was also a direct response from Gillis and Woodruff Jr.'s experience working on The Thing 2011.
After having the studio basically toss out most of their practical effects in favor of (kind of poor) CGI, they brainstormed Harbinger Down as a vehicle to showcase the practical effects that they had planned to use for The Thing 2011.
Personally, I think they did a great job of it, with minimal CGI. But the film could've used a bit more creativity in the lighting, to make the effects really pop.

Blood Glacier (2013) and Austrian eco-horror that has scientists discover something in the ice. Does it rip The Thing off? No. There are similarities and even seen some people suggest that it could act as a prequel. But what you get is a really good little creature feature with some nice practical fx.

What about “Alien?!” It’s got the same kind of isolated setting, tense rivalry between the protagonists (to include one “person” not being what he appears), and titular parasitic alien hunting down the protagonists (armed with flamethrowers) in “And Then There Were None” fashion. Hell, the chestburster scene in “Alien” was even the influence for the defibrillator scene in “The Thing.” Surely this warrants inclusion on this list, even if it has to be converted to a top 12.
Also, while I can forgive its exclusion, I think Howard Hawk’s “The Thing From Another World,” of which John Carpenter’s “The Thing” is a remake, deserves a shout out here. It doesn’t have the same atmosphere or themes as Carpenter’s, but if you enjoy “The Thing” you may well enjoy seeing it just to see the movie Carpenter liked enough to remake (parts of this movie are actually even shown in two different Carpenter films: “Halloween,” in which the kids Laurie Strode is babysitting are watching it on TV, and in “The Thing” itself, where footage of the Norwegian research crew discovering the alien spacecraft is actually taken from a scene in the original movie)
