"The sensation you're feeling is the Quickening...we are the same MacLeod. We are *BROTHERS*!"
Join Angel as she watches Highlander for the first time, starring the amazing talents of the handsome Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery...AND Clancy Brown?!? With Immortals traveling through time, the settings of Scotland and New York, plus lots of unexpected humor, love, and with music by Queen, this movie is truly magic. Also starring the beautiful Beatie Edney and Roxanne Hart, as well as James Cosmo, and directed by Russell Mulcahy.
When did you first see Highlander and where would you travel/live, if you were immortal??
**Note: The version available to me when I watched was not the director's cut, unfortunately, so I missed a couple of moments (not many!) BUT I HAVE WATCHED THE DIRECTOR'S CUT, NOW, & I'm so happy I saw those few extra parts(A flashback MacLeod has at the beginning, Fazil doing flips in the parking garage, Rachel's backstory)! Sorry for both of us that I didn't see them in the version I watched first...it would have made this epic movie even better!

The story goes that Brian wrote the lyrics in the backseat of his car after he watched Heather's death in the movie.

@@AngelGroves I strongly disagree with the OP. I have been trying without success to find a copy of the theatrical release but I don't think one exists after the old VHS tapes. Unlike many "director's cuts" which include quality lost scenes that were either cut out for time restraints or in an effort to not be given an 'R' rating, I believe that the additional Highlander footage was intentionally dropped because it is very poor and detracts from the quality of the film. Having the opponent in the 1783 duel scene shoot his own Second at the end completely ruins what was my favorite part of the movie. The rescue of Rachel as a child is so badly done that it makes me cringe. Most of all, the original mystery behind Connor and Rachel's relationship was awesome for viewers with imaginations, they obviously had a very long past and cared deeply about each other - I could picture them being romantically involved, traveling the world for years, but even centuries after Heather's death he still put up a wall and maintained just enough emotional distance to avoid being hurt like that again as Rachel grows old, "I'm not lonely, I've got everything I need right here." "Oh no you don't, you refuse to let anyone love you".

An inspired concept that, against all odds, managed to tell its story and leave its mark in a big way. Simply put, this is one the best modern science-fantasy gems to make it onto the silver screen. All praises to Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown for giving it their all in their roles, and a big hand to the cinematography and special effects work done on such a modest budget. Add to it the heartstring-tugging score by Michael Kamen and a dedicated album by Queen? -- Yes, Queen's album "A Kind of Magic" was specifically written for the film. "Highlander" is very much one of those lightning-in-a-bottle productions that just works. Sadly, that rang truer in regard to continuation as every sequel went through progressively worse and worse production issues over time rendering each finished product a seemingly messier affair than the last one. This first one is very much the best one, though you are not alone. ~ I too will always feel that the romance between Connor and Brenda in present time does seem very rushed. As presented, it comes across more like a studio requirement than a natural part of the story despite it being a central theme in the original script.
One fun fact? As an artist I have to touch on the animated effects segment towards the end. Production was actually nearing its completion when director Russel Mulcahey realized they had yet to decide on how exactly *the Prize* was going to look or be depicted. So, he dug into his connections from directing rock music videos and enlisted the aid of conceptual album and graffiti artists to animate the otherworldly final effects blowout at the conclusion of the final duel. In my opinion? It honestly makes the entire concept all the more metal. Though really? Come on... immortal warriors from across the ages gathering together to do battle until only one remains? That is a freaking fantasy metal opera synopsis if ever one existed.
    * EDIT: Yes, I accidentally wrote Rachel instead of Brenda. It's actually a very common mistake I make when discussing this movie because Brenda for me is just not a memorable character. Connor's relationship with Rachel is much more interesting and nuanced to me.

The music feels like it is one with the movie, so I love that it actually was made for it by Queen and the score by Michael Kamen. Incredible.
It really was a " lightning-in-a-bottle productions that just works", as you said.
Very cool you're an artist, and that is SO awesome that is how he came up with the visual for "The Prize". I didn't know he directed rock music videos, and now that you say it, I can totally see that inspiration with that scene, and I love he got those artists to animate it! Now, THAT'S metal. Nice. I was already in a happy rock mood, because I just read Alice Cooper has the same birthday as me (saw him in concert years ago with Iron Maiden), so I'm really loving the rock facts. :)

I thought the relationship between MacLeod and Heather perfectly depicted how immortality could easily become a curse to the one in possession of such an unfortunate gift because you would be sentenced to having to endure the loss of all those who you might develop an affection for; I would even imagine at a point the suffering that such a person might go through would eventually force a person to put up barriers in order to forsake the possibility of love if only to prevent the pain that would most assuredly follow.

That's exactly what Ramirez/Connery tried to teach him. That falling in love with someone is a deeper cut than any sword. With over two millennia of life he only dared to fall in love three times.
So each person has to be someone extremely special to dare to put yourself through that pain again, knowing completely well that this person is going to wither before your eyes, even if nothing tragic happens, while you yourself are cursed to carry on and remember them.

Blossom was a nickname, Heather was her name. The soundtrack was made/written for the movie. Because of copyright, licensing, and property rights, the official soundtrack was never released. Queen took charge, added a few songs, dropped a couple tracks and released it under their own label as "A Kind Of Magic" (Connor's last words, and sort of first words, to Rachael). This is why the lyrics fit the movie so well.

There is a deleted scene where McLeod rescues Rachael (his secretary) when she was a child in Nazi Germany. It was restored for a director's cut, so you can likely find it on RUclips.
Rachael knows McLeod is immortal. The further implication is he was a father figure to her when she was young, she grew to love him as a young woman & stayed with him over the years becoming older appearing than him & more of a mother/grandmother. When Rachael says McLeod will not let anyone in it is because she tried to love him in the past but he wouldn't let her. As Ramirez said loving a mortal then watching them get old & die is heartbreaking & learning not to love is how immortals avoid the pain. It's a tragedy that offsets the power of immortality.

At 35:58 when Connor is reciting what happened in 1783...I heard a story about that line. Apparently, there was someone who would actually do that. Songwriter-composer Jim Steinman, who wrote songs like "Holding Out For A Hero", "Total Eclipse of the Heart", and all of the Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out Of Hell' albums, was a connoisseur of wines and other spirits and had dinner with Russell Mulcahey (who directed the film and had made a lot of music videos in the heyday of MTV) where he did something very similar. It inspired Mulcahey to have this scene put in.
There are two films that Queen made music for...this and 'Flash Gordon' (1981). If you want the music from 'Highlander' get Queen's 'A Kind Of Magic' album. The only thing that upsets me about the music...the version of "New York, New York" that they recorded for the film has NEVER been released.
Beattie Edney played Heather aka Blossom.
There are several 'Highlander' films...and none of them really make sense with the way the film ends, or even the way it was constructed as a screenplay. This is in my top 20 favorite films of all time. There was also a 1990s TV series that had a different main character, Duncan played by Adrian Paul, who was Connor's cousin who is 100 or so years younger. Lambert made a couple of appearances in the series and Connor and Duncan teamed up in the final film 'Highlander: Endgame '. The series was so popular that it had a spinoff series, 'Highlander: The Raven'.
There is currently a reboot in the works with Henry Cavill attached to play a leading character as yet unnamed and Chad Stahelski (the John Wick films) as director.

Strange thing is, I remember that from the cinema, so they must have changed the cut for video. Or, it might have been the American cut, as I did hear later that the American version was much more heavily cut than the British version. There is a series also that ran for a few seasons, that many fans of the film ignored or refused to watch but I actually enjoyed. It does require you to ignore that MacLeod gets the prize at the end of the movie, the kurgan is simply an extremely powerful immortal who many other immortals believed was the most powerful and almost impossible to defeat. A stretch I know but I managed to look past that glaring difference as the series added a lot more excellent lore to the immortals and their journeys. This has been one of my favorite movies, since I saw it by accident in a hotel room in California while traveling on business in the 80s. I had returned to my hotel room after dinner and intended to watch 10 minutes of TV and start working, but once this started, I was hooked. I didn't even know the name of the movie until later. At the time the movie was unknown. It took several years for it to become a cult classic.
This movie started out as a final class project to write a script in a night course in film that Gregory Widden was taking. Someone recognized his term paper as actually worth filming and it was purchased.
The sequels are all hideously bad, but the TV series is quite good. I think you said that you've seen the sequence, foolishly cut from the American release, which shows Rachel Ellenstein's origins and which contains the line, "It's a kind of magic." I watched the first "Star Trek" episode when it was broadcast in 1966. I went to the first convention, and the next few, which were in New York City. My mother's home was about 20 miles away. I have a copy of the script for the episode "Friday's Child," with a signature by the writer, DC Fontana, in which she says, "Brandon, live long and prosper...."
You may have noticed that the 3rd season episodes are almost all inferior. If you don't know, that's because creator Gene Roddenberry left the series to protest a final slight by the network, NBC, although his name continued to be listed as executive producer.
The first two seasons, though, are almost all masterpieces. As with so many people, my favorite episode is "The City on the Edge of Forever," I know "Charlie X" well, though.
So, we have an interest in common.

let's just say that the magic is scarce in everything but the original... and the serie... the serie resolved how to build the Immortals universe in an acceptable manner... with only one minus, the fact that the original ending was closing the story tightly, so of course we feel cheated with anything that's supposed to happen after, like this feeling that it's not cannon...

Conner is only in the pilot, but you'll very quickly fall in love with his cousin Duncan (played by the brilliant-in-the-role Adrian Paul). 2 is really a train wreck and 3 is basically a poorer retelling of the first movie. The series though does it's own thing and while the first season is a lot of early 90s cheese, the acting is great and from the second season on is really great.

57:54 According to the director; Russell Mulcahy, when it came up to the music for Highlander, he wanted Queen because he wanted to have rock music that was of “an anthem quality”. Having just seen their memorable performance at Live Aid in July of 1985, he knew they would be a good fit. Queen was skeptical; because the last time they wrote music for a movie, it was Flash Gordon (1980). But it wasn’t until seeing a 20-minute cut of the film, that they said they’ll not only write a song for the beginning of the film (“Princes of the Universe”) but they write five tracks for the film.
They not only wrote for Highlander, they also wrote the song “One Vision” for the film Iron Eagle.
Both “One Vision” and “Princes of the Universe” appear on Queen’s A Kind of Magic album; along with the songs “A Kind of Magic”, “One Year of Love”, and “Who Wants to Live Forever”.
The album’s release led to Queen making their final tour with Freddie Mercury in 1986. Check out their Live at Wembley Stadium show.

And this reaction came up, and I have long been an unabashed fan of Christopher Lambert's. Mainly because I saw Greystoke when I was very young and I just love his presence. I also saw this movie when I was only a little bit older, along with other work from him, and I am the only person I've known, during my life, that imitates his laugh and his voice and line delivery. 😂 Anyway, it was just wild, to me, when you started this video talking about your love of Lambert!! I knew I was in the right place.

Mankind would be doomed as he would be an unstoppable tyrant. I think the Spaniard saw that MacCloud had what it takes to defeat the Kurgen because MacCloud was everything the Kurgen wasn't. Kind, compassionate, honorable, strength of heart, etc.
The scene with Heather always breaks my heart, but it shows you MacCloud didn't want power. He wanted to have children and grow old with someone he could love. Instead of watching loved ones pass and deal with that over lifetime. That hits hard just thinking about it.

A Frenchman playing a Scot, and a Scot playing an Egyptian in service to the King of Spain, with the son of an American Congressman playing a Russian. Gotta love the casting in this film!

The script was a lot darker and violent where is shows that Connor McLeod was born in 1409, rather than 1518, The Kurgan was named Carl William Smith, he wasn't a savage warrior but a cold blooded killer, McLeod goes under the name Richard Turpin, he then visits the funeral of one of his sons, as immortals can have children, while his sons, in their 50's are shocked to see him alive after 45 years, Ramirez was a Spaniard where he teaches McLeod how to be a better swordsman, McLeod leaves home rather than being banished.

When I was a child, the episodes of the series were on TV on Saturday mornings. There was no school, but I got up to listen to Princes of the Universe in the main title. There was no RUclips yet.

Clancy Brown was a surprise breakout in this movie. Didn't hear much from him for a while and then movie roles and a huge repertoire of voiceover acting, including Mr Krabbs on SpongeBob.

I think he did the thriller Shoot To Kill with Sidney Poitier and Tom Berenger after this.

Oh, I always cry when I hear that song now. I always think of McCloud and Heather together as she gets older and dies. Another very beautiful scene.

Highlander is one of my all-time favorites. It isn't perfect, but it's _great._ There is attention to detail, even the camera work and transitions are noteworthy.
You know from the first Sean Connery voice-over that it's gonna be amazing. No movie does that, it breaks all the rules to begin a movie with a text slide.
