Don’t you think his entire goal for the next 6 months or so will be solely dedicated to getting in the right mindset and paving a way for obtaining a more conditional state of body as well. I don’t see stamina and physical conditioning a huge downside for nepo. If it was something forwardly active involving actual rigorous movement’s, then yea it would make sense for nepo to work extra hard with his conditioning and likely physique. With Nepo in the final I think it will be the first time, as world champion, that Magnus will defend his title playing more agressevily and more relaxed. He was upset to play a revenge match against Anand in 2014 (psicologically always difficult after only one year he beat him), he was very frustrated and nervous in his match against Karjakin (who made an impressive exhibition in defence), and he had to be very cautious with Caruana in 2018, knowing that the american is his toughest rival in a match for the chess crown. For his match against Nepo, Carlsen will play more freely, without so much pressure, and being 30, at his peak, I think it will be an relativily easy match for Carlsen. Anyway, a very interesting final yet to come in november

There is also the fact that Nepo and Ding Liren much more aggressive chess than Caruana which opens possibilities on both sides and finally Nepo is the only guy having a positive historic score against Magnus 4 to 1 and 6 draws (most of those games where pkayed while Carlsen being in his prime and Nepo being in his very inconsistent years)

Chess nerds - is there a possibility that Magnus "allows" Ian, So, and others to win some "regular season" matches over him so they get comfortable with their strategies/preparation? Then when the World Championship comes around he just completely crushes their "clever" prep strats since he can more accurately predict what they're going to do? Since the WC is what he really wants - could he be playing the long game? This may be a silly question but I don't play chess and have only recently started watching it.

Let's be real, while Ian is (maybe besides Dubov) the only one who can actually outplay Magnus, he does not have the complete package, and against a semi-motivated Magnus his chances are 20% at best. The games should be good though - I'm sure Magnus appreciates playing against someone who isn't ultrarational for once (like Caruana and Karjakin) and will actually go for wins this time. If I had to guess, I'll give (if they play the full 14 games) Magnus 3-4 wins and Ian 1 or 2.
But yeah, Magnus has so much more experience playing World Championships that Ian will need a miracle or a Magnus that's otherwise occupied.

    • @kasparov9

Well Magnus has not been great in the past 2 world championships, had to come from behind against Karjakin to draw the classical portion, and drew all 12 games against Caruana in the classical portion of the WCC 2018. Hikaru will probably mop the floor with current Kasparov. Kasparov at his prime though was much better than Hikaru.
I didn't express myself well before. I was talking in terms of averages. The current generation on average is better than the Kasparov generation. Thats because of the use of computers to study and analyze positions as well as the better theory these days.
Maybe we can use Elo to compare players between different eras. I say maybe because it is also possible that todays higher Elos are due to inflation. But it is also possible that it shows that the players have gotten better. Probably there is some truth to both of these statements.
But still Kasparov peak Elo of 2851 was higher than Hikaru peak Elo of 2816. So Kasparov at his peak was really a beast, probably only Magnus is stronger than him at his peak.
