- This video shows you how to teach your dog to not bark at the door when someone rings the doorbell or knocks on the door. Using a combination of positive reinforcement and treats, you can break your dog's habit of barking when someone comes to your door. Most dog's bark when someone's at the door from anxiety or excitement, but both are things that you can overcome with training.

Brilliant, 3 seconds in and now my dog is going mad barking at a doorbell that isn't even his! 🤣
holy crap ur comment saved me from my dog barking thank you
I saw it coming turn off my volume 😂😂😂
mine do the same LOL
Hahahahahahahahahahahhaahhahaahha
Thank you for this video! My puppy never barked at the door until he turned about ten months old. Now he barks excessively every time and based on his behaviour I think he is anxious rather than excited. He does not show anxiety at any other time, so I think it is a covid thing as not many people have been to the house. I can’t wait to follow this with him.
I had a goldie that barked at the front door - not excessively. My rescue lurcher never barked and just stood next to her watching. After my goldie passed, my lurcher would bark at the post man when he came to the door - no one else. She even barked at the postie van, and no other van when it pulled up. She just took on the job of her late friend. Bless them. I now have a rescue frenchie/pug and he goes ballistic at the door - so will be starting to train him on this. He was a lockdown pup and his previous owners didn;t teach him any manners or house rules. I have had him 8 months and this is the last remaining social skill for him to master. He is bright, so we will get there. Helpful tips
Ehh, I don't agree with giving the dog treats when they bark to calm them down, it's gonna make them think they did a good thing and keep barking. I'd rather correct them until they stop barking and then giving them a treat. Otherwise you are promoting bad behaviour.
I’m picking my dane up in a couple of weeks and these videos have been super helpful. So thank you!
I love that it's a girl and her name's Guss 😄. I mean.... let's face it, she looks like a Guss! 😄😍🐾🐾
We need HELP. We have four dogs, we brought two siblings into our house a year ago. One of them has a “reactive personality.” Meaning that, he will react in a bad way to anything going on around him that causes disruption with our dogs.
If anyone has any suggestions on how we can stop this. We would be grateful.
We can’t even have guests come to our home without them being put in the crate. I thought about the shock collar with the remote control to try to stop them, especially our reactive dog, Jack… But, I don’t want to do anything to them that might make things worse.
I appreciate anyone’s help here that might be able to help me. We absolutely don’t want to lose any of these dogs because of their going crazy when the doorbell rings or someone knocks at the door. We’re trying to calm him down. We’ve tried treats, it’s literally a scrum at the door of all of them barking going crazy. I can’t get to any of their attention. .
Any suggestions my dog loving friends?
These are terrific pups. They love us so much… But they are so different when someone else comes to our house.
Thanks for reading and if anyone has any suggestions, thank you for your help. We have considered “doggy Boot Camp” right now, my brother is dying from cancer and is on hospice care. He also has dementia. I’m trying to take care of him and the dogs and now my injured wife as well.
Thanks for reading this very long post. I’m sorry for being so long.
Well, it sounds like you have zero control over the dogs. I would suggest you get someone to help you (by ringing your doorbell) and you practice directing your dogs away from the door and either into another room or other set place for them you choose. You might need to practice this with one dog at a time until you condition all of them to listen to your direction.
This won't be easy or quick. I would start with 10-15 minutes a day with each dog.
I'm also curious to know how much exercise they get.
@@timmiet47321exercise is key.
I’ve learnt this the hard way 😢
I just wanted to give that dog a big hug
How do you know your dog is aware that she's being rewarded for not reacting to noises like the door opening or someone walking around in apartment? Sometimes I feel like she doesn't know why
I think he’s giving the treat to make the door sound a ‘good thing’ other than something to stress about.
How do I get my Great Dane to give me personal space when I’m eating
Boona put him out
Crate train him, everytime you are about to eat put him in the crate.
I taught mine she has to lay down when we are eating..She is a year old and does really good
Give him a chew toy or snack when they go to their bed/crate before you eat. Then progressively start training them to stay in their area by giving them something later and later into your meal. Eventually, they should understand that they'll get a reward if they stay in their area after you're done eating
So you're giving her treats when she barks at the door ? Seems counter-intuitive
That was my first thought also
Love finding this video ,what I'm really seeking is a video on getting my Great Dane and my bordercollie and my Chihuahua to not bark if I'm not present. Say like I go to the women's room, outside any door , go out to the corner . Maybe go for two hours .
Barking a little when I come home a bit isok but my focus to teach my dogs robot bark while I'm not present.
A chihuahua and a border collie? AND a Great Dane? They don't keep you busy or anything do they?! 🤣🤣💕💕
I love these tips. They all make sense. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
I really enjoy all your tips, thank you for making the videos. We have 1 1/2 Great dane/English mastiff. She is a great dog and we have gone through all her training. We still struggle with her barking and acting nutty when she sees another dog.... we did let her go through her first heat, which included phantom pregnancy, just this week we had her spayed and stomach tacked to prevent bloat. Hopefully the spay will help with craziness towards other dogs. If you have suggestions would love to hear, thank you!
Glad to hear that you're enjoying the videos! That sounds like a great idea for another video...stay tuned 😁
I'm glad to hear your dog made it thru tacking. My two year old boy died on the operating table during tacking. Since we haven't tacked a dog, we also haven't had any bloat. I hope she calms with the dog excitement.
Have you tried stepping in front of her and having her make eye contact with you? I kept a pouch of bacon on me during walks for these situations. Once my dog made eye contact I'd pull out some bacon and have them wait until they calmed before giving them it. It helped to associate eyes on me and calm around dogs.
I am not a professional trainer tho.
Best of luck.
My dog barks angrily / crazily ever time I open the door to check the mail box or for any other reason.
What's the food plan for him? How many times does he eat?
Working on this now! Thank you so much :)
We just got our great dane puppy about a week ago now. And shes pretty good but a few things I need help with are... she does not like her kennel at all I have tryed treats but its a no go. She jumps on my kids and shes already bigger then my 3 yr old not even sure how to get her to stop jumping. And the last thing is she and my cat are not getting along, they dont fight but my gd barks wildly whenever she sees my cat. Any tips? Thanks for this video very helpful.
Is she better now?
Tiger, my Great Dane 6 mo puppy started barking soon as this video played! Hahaha - thank you! Been watching the channel at least a month before I got Tiger - hello from the Philippines!
I love when my dog does his job and warns me that someone is at the door
I will try this with my German Shepherd and Norwegian Elkhound. I swear. If this actually works, I will write you in this November as my choice for President.
I got my puppy 2 days ago and try to crate training him .
I need some good tips!
Thank you

Great Dane Care thank you for the sending the information
You’re welcome, good luck with the pup!
This is my last hope :( my mom told me that if my dog keeps barking at the dog she will give her away and I don’t want that to happen. I really hope this works
Great video, thanks. Do you have one about stopping scratching to get in? Particularly with glass sliding doors. Our dog goes mad at the glass door and stands on his back paws scratching and crying to get in.
Don't leave your dog outside, maybe. 🤔
THANK YOU
Ok ?? How do you stop the dog from barking when you have say, a sliding glass door? Mine looks out onto an enclosed porch & the porch door (also see through) doubles as my 'front door'. I kinda want to address the issue BEFORE anything starts & my elderly dog barks at anything that dares to come near. Elderly is 9 & a Shitzu, pup is 2mo.
Blah blah blah... the useful content starts at 2:27
My trainer forbids us from telling our dogs “it’s okay” because it reinforces the behavior
To each their own! Almost any method can work, the key usually boils down to consistency
It does indeed reinforce it.
Off topic, but I'm bring my male Great Dane pup home im 2 weeks. What size crate do I need to look for?
This one -> greatdanecare.com/buyers-guide/best-great-dane-crate/
Just get an ex-pen, it’s much more versatile and plenty big.
Love these videos!! Can you do one on teaching the come command??
Sorry for the slow reply but I'm adding it to my list ;) In the mean time, you can also take a look at the following article that teaches come/recall -> greatdanecare.com/important-great-dane-training-commands/
So...I give the dog a treat if he barks at the door?
I have a 5 month old that go crazy every evening, I can handle everything but the barking. Any tips on barking to get our attention?
She's so gorgeous.
These methods unfortunately don't work great with an arrogant little Chihuahua.
Why would you not want your dog to alert to someone at the door (security)?
Several reasons are mentioned in the video around the one minute mark
Anne, I have a Blue Great Dane too. Since they were bread to hunt wild boar & protect their owners (kings and queens), I want my Sadie to bark loud & in most ferocious voice when someone approaches our home. We've tought her to sit/stay until released by us. If it's someone with bad intentions, then they'll probably haul ass before I get to the door.
Is that really a question? Boy you sound clueless
@@oldlife3yearsago...921 yes it is a question and yes I am completely clueless!
@@wards1fan yes my second Great Dane who lived with me and my adult son would alert to his car motor at least two blocks before he actually pulled into our driveway. He would come and tell me that my son was coming!
I've got a 2 yr old great dane. How do I break him from jumping on people?
Apologies for the slow reply as I missed this! I haven't made a video about jumping yet, but you can take a look at this article for reference in the mean time -> greatdanecare.com/stop-jumping-up/
Crystal Bristol watch “it’s me or the dog” they show a lot of dogs with issues like that but I’ve heard if you completely turn around and show your back towards them it tells them you don’t like that and you become boring so they stop, don’t allow it on yourself or anyone else because it will only confuse the dog like “can I jump or can I not jump” esp with grate Danes, if a kid came over that ain’t gonna be fun for anyone. Keep turning your back and don’t let them jump on you, husband, anyone! Because it’s not okay with a dog that huge
If you let the dog jump up on you it'll think it's ok on anyone
Wait, if we give them a treat even when they bark, doesn’t that positive reinforce the barking?
It's a distraction not a reward. Eventually when the door knocks they'll look to you to see what their reaction should be.
Yes it’s ass backwards
Didn't know you can have a horse in your house. 🤣
What about like me i have a window by the door and if there is one movement he barks and won’t stop?!
Hey Great Dane Care!
I would love some help with my 1 year 4 month old great dane Alexander Hamilton. He really is a very good boi, but there are certain habits/traits he is exhibiting that are making me nervous and I certainly need help with.
Ham is a whiner. I do my best to have patients, but it is constant. I work on ignoring him, and when he stops whining, I treat him. So we are slowly getting there, but its been a issue since I first picked him up at 8 weeks.
The biggest issue I am facing right now is his anxiety around other dogs. He isn't aggressive, but he loses his damn MIND when he is around other dogs. He was very well socialized as a pup so now he wants to play all the time. On a leash, it is almost impossible. He starts whining when has recently started into frantic shrieking. Today when this happened, I had him lay down to calm down, but instead he shrieked more and started to shake. I never want to reward this behavior by allowing him to play with other dogs, but I am starting to lose control on what to do. I reward when he is being good on the leash, but all bets are off when another dog appears. We change directions when we see another dog on the street, but all it takes is another dog barking in a yard. When he plays, he is SOOOO happy to be playing with friends that he is just too rough and completely plows into other doggos which makes other owners uncomfortable. He isn't being aggressive, but he loves to run and chase; however at 150lbs he can completely barrel roll over other doggos that are smaller than him.
I am starting to plan his neutering, but I am getting nervous. I have heard of many dogs that sometimes calm down after being neutered, but I have also heard the horror stories of dogs that become extremely aggressive after the procedure.
Sorry!! Thats alot, but any feedback/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am alone in raising this big guy and have worked my booty to give him a great happy life. Is truly a great dog, but there is still a long way to go.
-Kelsey
Hello just a fellow Dane Owner...I hope the neutering will help. Instead of redirecting him when you see another dog, have you tried distraction method with a treat, making him sit then giving him a really high value treat, like hot dogs they love it! Then praise and continue walking. I have a dane that had that issues, with people and dogs. He has ignore dogs now, but still working on humans...He gets nervous, because everyone wants to pet him and say hello. Or if not a treat, try something like a distracting noise...a beeper, or you make a hiss sound. Every dog is different. Now that I take my dane out for more frequent walks he had gotten so much better. Now at off leash parks, he doesn't bother any dog...he sniffs and walks away. However I understand ur dane is still a puppy...so neutering i think will calm him down. :) Good luck!!!
You rewarded the dog the first knock even though she barked. Is this right?
The reward is bc they redirected their attention to you from the activity
@@GreatDaneCare Oh I see. I have 2 dogs....both go mad with knock of door, ring of bell. Any suggestions?
Same approach shown in the video 😉
Coda is a total basket case. He actually broke the storm door and window screens when anyone walks by. He goes from door to window so fast he is busting the house and my feet. Help
can you suggest a door bell ring I could download to train my dog not to respond to that sound please
Use your phone to make a recording of your own doorbell so that it’s an exact match!
Sorry but that's their job to be watch dogs. They just need to learn when it's ok to stop.
I just bought a maltipoo and he barks when someone’s at the door, how do I stop him from doing this
maltipoo? used to be called a mongrel
My dog bites and barks but she bites us not even the one at the door
Please do part 2
Part 2 on barking?
How can I slow my GD eating her meals? She hoovers her food in 3 seconds. I worry about bloat.
Why stop a dog from barking at the door? That's what they're supposed to do. Next thing you know a burglar will enter and your dog will just sit there, silent because YOU trained it to be that way!
