I have a dog in my families house that belongs to my brother and sister n law. She's a very sweet dog and was given up by a friend of theirs. She has severe separation anxiety that has gotten worse over the years. She also barks at every single person who approaches the house, walks on the deck, walks sometimes out of a room, or if she hears something outside at a neighbors house. She barks at my family or anyone she knows who comes onto the deck/walks into the house. She likes getting to know new people but seems super intimidating if you don't know her. The lifting of both hands to show that she did not have a treat was what started the snapping. I train all my dogs to become accustomed to people just reaching out at their faces and grabbing them gently by the mussel. It's a game to them. No one likes strangers just reaching for their faces. Also, “does she look like she’s breaking into his house? THIS ISN’T EVEN HIS HOUSE” really made me laugh 😂
A good technique is to get the stranger to throw the treats behind the dog, so then the dog can approach for another repetition. Rather than the dog remaining too close to the stranger for too long in one sitting, that is why Lupo started to react. It was too much. It's always good to critically analyse footage, I do it to myself all the time !
I agree, also telling a dog to 'sit down' makes the dog hesitate as what is he being asked. My dog is taught to understand 'Sit' as one command and 'down' as another.
What about a dog who does not pay attention to treats/commands when the guest is over? I've had my two dogs ignore anything I give them when I managed to keep them sitting and quiet for a few seconds before they bark again. As long as a guest is in the house they don't want treats and will even ignore my recalls even though they are otherwise good with that.
Thank you for this. I’ll definitely try this to my 3 yr old dog. A little back story. He was with me since he was only 2 months old. And we live in a condo where pets aren’t allowed ( well, before. But now they already allow it. But I still feel anxiety whenever someone knocks at the door.) that’s why I always freak out when someone’s knocking at the door. I believe that he felt my anxiety whenever there’s a stranger so up until now, he barks when there’s a visitor. But that’s all he does. Bark. And I feel guilty about that because I’m the reason that he’s like that. Now it’s time to correct things. Again, thank you for this.
Actually what is interesting is that there was a study on this matter and what was conclude is that reactive dog toward poeple can not be reinforced with snack. They found that after the dog has received the snacks it is still try to lanch at the poeples. Michael Ellis talked about that as well. Interesting to investigate that further.
Mine does too ! Swiss white shepherds traits . Treats do not work at all he wouldn’t eat anything, I do find sit and leave it works mostly takes work but they are highly reactive. They do sometimes grow out of it takes so much training and I use e collar . I will try on leash Nxt time I normally make him place 🇦🇺🙏
My doberman does this specifically with men. If a man comes to the door or walks in the house, he is hackles up charging the door. Once they come in, he's hiding behind me, barking with hackles up. If they make any move like they want to get closer, sometimes, he pees. I would say he acts like that with 85% of the men who come into my house. Still to this day, he wants to like my dad when he comes over but cowers anytime a movement is too fast. This has been for the entire 3.5 years that I have had him since he was 8 weeks. I can't even have the damn plumber come over.
Omg it’s the same with my small shih tzu/ Maltese and she doesn’t really welcome male visitors really well but if it’s a female she is overly excited and demands attention. Hopefully this video helps.
I have a Jindo as well with the same problem, very deep sense of territory. Total polite gent on neutral territory great with people and other dogs. When it comes to people coming over to our home theres always the opening barking fit until we get her to relax. Weve tried treats and crating. I think well mix in leash corrections like in this video until it works. I have a sense it will never be fully taken out of her though.
The dog I just adopted does this. She’ll take treats from people but as they go to walk away she’ll bark or growl. It’s a new one for me my elderly Staffordshire bull terrier passed away and she never barked at anyone. Time for me to learn New approaches.
Great video, great advice. Only one thing: the dog started barking after the trainer pulled the leash and not for no reason. It was on it's guard, so the second something unexpected happened the dog started barking...
We’re trying to train our scared french bulldog to stop barking at guests. we will start using the leash at home as correction etc. but she doesn’t like eating treats in such (stressful) situations so we’re at a point where we don’t know how to treat her when she’s acting correctly and listening
I have a home cake business and our Minni Aussie is very reactive to them. I'm working on the bed / stay while I ring the bell, knock and pretend voices. I'ts hard and she's only 11 months old . I'll have treats by the back door from now on!
Yep, we must work hard on this for our foster. She has actually been so reactive she has bitten a guest. I have had some results with a cannister spray that hisses, too.
I absolutely love your training style do you have a video on barking my 4 month old puppy barks at things that aren't there in the house she is a nervous puppy
My GSD likes to bark, specifically at men. Though I do like it because she’s like a guard dog for me (a short young woman) but I would like it if she didn’t bark at my guests or people that are close to me. In my family, she never barked at me, but have at my other family members (who’ve been there when she was a puppy) I’ve tried my best to socialize her at a young age, and she’s typically a very sweet girl who just wants belly rubs. It’s just first impression that she messes up. She’s also been getting very protective of me and her territory (my yard and house.) I will definitely try to do this training with my GSD!
Only thing, I would use some kind of release cue to not confuse the dog, you tell him sit stay and correct him each time he gets up, but then when the treats are thrown you just let him go for it even though you just said stay. If that makes sence. Otherwise enjoying your videos!
What would you advise if the dog is barking consistently when the guests arrive, so there is no "quiet" phase before the dog starts? Thinking more unexpected guests. Thanks for the great no nonsense videos as always.
During training and real life I add a PLACE command where the pit rescue-dog goes to a small mat about 12’ from the door and STAY after the door knock and before the entering. The dog is great at DOWN so I often ask the visitor to order the DOWN which has worked every time so far. A pro dog trainer friend( + only) thinks it’s a mistake … allowing another person to control my dog.
The dog is displaying submissive behavior towards Joel, not fear. Dogs communicate a lot through body language. Lowering the ears and head, making the body small, are all signs that the dog is abdicating decision making to Joel. He can't verbally say, "You're the boss," so he does it physically.
Yes, my small dog does this, we did the treats thing for quite a while and there was a small improvement but take the treats away and it's back to square one. I don't have hardly any visitors, he barks like crazy when my sons come home. Unfortunately my eldest son doesn't have the patience to carry on with the method, he just wants to be able to come into the house after work so I have to make sure the living room door is shut between them. The other little dog is fine.
Thank you very much for this practical video, utilizing 2 different methods at the same time really helps. I just want to ask if the treat toss happens while dog barking, would it end up being encouraging barking? Thank you
I notice now a couple of years down the road, you aren't using treats so much, has anything changed in this situation, or do you still recommend treating with this aspect of training? I really love your method of training by the way, it's sooo effective. Loose lead walking is now a breeze thanks to you
I want to see you work with a dog.. that won't sit.. won't listen.. my little one.. I just got. three years old.. pom. growling.. barking.. won't stop.. going crazy I am getting so anxiety.. over this.. this dog is really tramatized.. omgosh.. but this dog you are working with is really a good dog.. after seeing this one...
When you say huh huh or sit down the dog responds to you. My dog ignores commands at times like this. He is bad when people walk, run, skate, or bike past the house or yard. So its random and cannot be staged to work on. Working on obedience more. He knows commands, but doesn't follow them when riled up.
Do the same he does with the dog when isn't paying attention. Literally you have to turn your dog with your knee and pulling the leash at the same time, and direct his face to you. Maybe that is useful. Obviously this has to be whereas (or before) a skater, runner, biker, etc. passes you. Hope you fix your dog. Also, I recommend you to learn the body language of dogs in order to know what is your dog's real problem.
I had to go get my newf ecollar trained because after a year of nothing but positive training I had a 150lb Prb. I’ve learned how to do both but needed to know it’s ok to correct!
Dog (with "deep issues") barely reacting to person: ..... My dog with neighbors (or even people he knows) when he escapes front screen door: "bboOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!"
Thanks for the video! We have a rescue who is like this. Has Lupo gotten better over time with this training? Do you think he’ll ever get to a place where he doesn’t have to go through this process when strangers enter the home? We’re trying to anticipate and set realistic goals for ourselves around behavior modification so we don’t get too discouraged with things.
We also have a rescue who behaves like this so I too would be interested in knowing what our realistic outlook is… she goes crazy whenever anyone comes near me or us, also outside our home, whenever we settle somewhere, park bench, picknick blanket, café. She barks and lunges at people and will not stop until we remove her from the situation. I’m really hoping that this will get better, she’s only been with us for four months and she’s a year old.
It is just my opinion but given the proper training I would expect those behaviors to diminish but not disappear altogether. I would expect it to become less of an issue with training and as the dog matures and *comes to trust you more.* It may sound cliché- but work on building a relationship with your dog.
I just want to give an update and say that we just brought our doggo to both sides of our families’ homes for thanksgiving and he did great! Only a little barking at first but overall did great, with adults and kids alike. Lots of socialization along the way and a reliable recall so we can call him to our sides easily when he starts getting over threshold. There’s light at the end of the tunnel :)
Hey Joel, can you make a video on how you Would handle a dog that’s reactive in a car.! barks at every one and anything that comes near the car or goes by the car..
Yes totally, same issue! She’ll bark even when they’re at a distance and nowhere near the car. Sometimes I think it’s boredom and the barking gives them something to do while they’re in the car.
My dog got mad at me for training her to stay on her lounge pillow. The next day she ripped apart her pillow that I made her stay on with dog treats. She can be very impatient and stubborn. The Pet Smart lady used a voice that made her listen.
Lupo growled the first time when she was done with the treats and she put her hands up and palms out to show she didn't have treats anymore. This is the kind of dog that I would likely hand his leash over to the stranger as soon as they barked/growled. (obviously not with a bite history or serious concerns over biting). Then the stranger would walk the dog and ask for a sit or some type of obedience. That and or 2 leashes on the dog, one in your hand and you hand her one as well. Is there a reason you would not use this method?
Only if she doesn't trust them. She's only done it twice in 10 years. They weren't allowed in. My grandfather always said, "If your dog or your horse doesn't trust someone, you shouldn't, either." Sound wisdom I have applied to my life with nary a cause for regret.
This was just what I needed! Thank you!! The discipline method works with my pup. My question is whether the pup ever grows out of it if we keep working on it. Have you seen it stop altogether?
Did this treat thing with my german shephard puppy who barks at people coming in the house our neighbour came round and the puppy barked and barked the neighbour tossed him a treat and he settled infact he lay down and was great
2:35 I'm wondering if he took her open-hand gesture as some form of aggression. Which is why he barked. Still not okay. Or maybe he was just pissed she was all out of treats. 😁
I wish you showed up when searching for dog training also. And not only positive reinforcement people. Sure it might work alright if you get your dog as a puppy. But fixing leash pulling or barking at people with positive reinforcement is nearly impossible even if they claim it’s super easy.
Struggling with this. My dog goes nuts and obvs isn’t on a lead when couriers etc just turn up, and of course they don’t have treats with them. And I have 3 dogs and they’re ALL going insane and winding each other up!
My mini schnauzer won't respond to correction to stop barking with someone at the door. It's like he doesn't know I'm even there anymore. We can't treat him while he's barking!
Thank you. My dog barks and growsl when people LOOK at her (or move towards her). She is ok, and may even start to like them, when they ignore her. Idk if the treats will work (since she wants to be ignored) but I will try it. Any other suggestions?
This video is great, but the dog is not quite as reactive as I thought it would be. I've seen many dogs just go ballistic as soon as someone is near the door from the outside
Please no rude comments, my son rescued a neglected, abused female brindle pitbull, she's fearful of plastic bags, sweet with women but growls at people coming into my house
my dog barks as soon as he hears a vehicle pulling up outside and people getting out of it, even next door at the neighbors. He goes on guard when anyone who isnt my mother, my sister, or myself come through the front door, even my aunt who lives with us he'll bark at her when she comes back from going somewhere. At one point he started nipping at people we've let into the house when they get too close to my mother so ive resorted to getting a muzzle for when he gets to that point. he's completely fine with them if they are outside but once they come inside he's all "how dare you trespass into my domain".
My dog is 8 months old. He used to bark at everything as a puppy. Literally sound of door, drawers opening, any sound. From exposing him to all those things that make him bark, now he's pretty much okay with things and other dogs. He barks at people though, he doesn't bark at everyone. When we are walking he doesn't bark. At home he keeps barking at the same people, who work in my house. Is this bored barking? Also when I am driving, and the car stops (at a gas station, parking lot), he barks at anybody approaching the car. I am glad I have been able to cure 90% of the barking but I want to know how I can find out what causes him to bark. He also seems to bark more when I am around, so it's either fear or guarding thing. As a side note, I live in a majority moslem country, and they are not allowed to touch dogs. I think this is one of the reasons. Because of them avoiding him trying to sniff, he gets suspicious?
Great information! I can use this with my puppy schnauzer but what do I do when she barks on walks? She barks at dogs and people because she excited and wants to meet them. If I let her meet them she's happy to get the attention so I know she's not aggressive. Please suggest one of your videos thanks
What I do on walks if I see another dog approaching I will pre-warn my Pitt mix saying 'No barking. We're walking nice..' (repeat several times) cuz she will also lunge and want to meet the dog. This works great as long as the other dog doesn't bark and lunge, she will most times keep walking nice right past them. Still working on it.
What do you do with a dog that is only reactive to a certain person, or anyone who looks like her. *I know she scared him thinking it was funny. It was not! Prior to her being around him, he had no issues with people. A bark to announce arrival but once he saw I was ok with person, he is fine. Ps. She is not around anymore but he still reacts when he sees someone looking like her. Not just in our home but when we are elsewhere.
I wish my girlfriends 10 year old chihuahua was trained like this. She was never trained once in her life and was given freedom the whole time. She has tremendous anxiety when she leaves the house and when my girlfriend comes home. She goes crazy and barks excessively and my girlfriend doesn’t stop her at all. She said “she has always been like this it’s okay she’s old”
He growled because she raised her hands. The handler then yanked on the leash, making the situation much worse. If the dog growls when people raise their hands, then you counter condition to that behavior. What that leash correction did was suppress the dog's communication (growling), letting the dog know that a growl earns a correction. That was a big mistake. Next time there won't be a growl but an air snap or bite instead. Dogs are not humans, yet this handler talks about dogs as if they understand concepts like politeness. It is sad how few people study & understand behavior. Don't work with someone who punishes a growl or corrects a dog with a leash. This is how you shape a dangerous dog.
I’m my dogs trigger and it’s soooo annoying. Anything to do with me, is exaggerated 10x. My fiancé and his parents ? Yea he cares but absolutely no one is allowed to even look in my direction. Not even my fiancé sometimes. We’ve done the treats thing and sitting and it works with my fiancé and my in laws when they have people over but it doesn’t with me. He eventually calms down once the person/ people are here for 10 minutes or more and than it repeats when they come again once or twice and after that he’s their bestfriend, until I’m around. Once he’s comfortable with them around he’s still okay with them with me but they’re still not allowed to even reach in my direction without him running and trying to get the body part reaching for me. We recently had family over for a week since they can’t make it to my baby shower and it became a game of “how long will he go for us if we reach for mom”. 1 hour. It took one hour of both my MIL and my fiancés aunt of both reaching for me one after the other when he went for one the other reached for me and back and forth. Eventually he settled on sitting and going for the hand instead of chasing the person back away from me 🙄 thankfully he’s a small 15lb schnauzer poodle shitzu mix so he’s not big. I can only imagine how he’s going to be with the new baby and people around her. And I do have a larger 70lb redbone who is absolutely everyone’s favorite and would gladly silently welcome a murderer into the house as long as they didn’t make too much noise😒😒
I wish this was how my dog reacted. It’s like holding back a dinosaur! I don’t get many visitors but she even goes crazy when she sees the people we see everyday in and around our apartment building. I just recently got some spray called pet corrector and it seems to have gotten better. Because me telling her to sit wasn’t working, promise of treat wasn’t working, the Caesar technique of tsss-poke, tap wasn’t working, the prong collar, the slip lead, none of that.

Thank u for all your work and explanations very helpful
Wonderful work man and a great dog ❤
Excellent explanation of the method but it would need many voluntary visitors.
This channel will be at 200k by the end of the year at least
Does she look like someone breaking into this house? This isn’t even YOUR house-
My doberman does this specifically with men.
Actually, she did move the first time. She waved her hands like “see? Nothing up my sleeves.”
She’s a good listener and very disciplined.
I'm a new subscriber by the way. Love your up front approach to training. Thanks for your videos
Congrats on the 50K Subscribers!
Yes I so needed this ! Thank you !
"This isn't even his house" 😂
Yep, we must work hard on this for our foster. She has actually been so reactive she has bitten a guest. I have had some results with a cannister spray that hisses, too.
Upstate canine recommends the new people first ignore the reactive dog before approaching it. Good video
Hey I just did this and it worked!!! Yay!!! tytyty🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️
Love it! Could you maybe make a video on dogs that follow their owners everywhere?
She’s also been getting very protective of me and her territory (my yard and house.)
I will definitely try to do this training with my GSD!
Only thing, I would use some kind of release cue to not confuse the dog, you tell him sit stay and correct him each time he gets up, but then when the treats are thrown you just let him go for it even though you just said stay. If that makes sence. Otherwise enjoying your videos!
I need a Tyler in my life
Do you prefer the booty or the treats
Thanks for the great advice 🥰
What would you advise if the dog is barking consistently when the guests arrive, so there is no "quiet" phase before the dog starts? Thinking more unexpected guests. Thanks for the great no nonsense videos as always.
You jjst have to gain control of them and tell start. So tell him to sit and gain control then begin
Just watch other videos I too don't find this helpful hehe
Love this channel!❤️
My dog is fine with people outside the house but the second we move past the door he goes crazy. It’s weird cause he used to love guests.
Our main issue is the visitors - they don’t do as they’re told!
my dog goes crazy over new people at the house but it's not fear. it's he wants to play
Me, expecting Tyler to be a guy 👨🏻 walking in
Me, after seeing Tyler 👱🏻♀️: 👀
Lol. Great session tho
"I don't care what he wants" you had me till that. That dog looks afraid of you.
I think dogs should fear the owner a little bit or else they won't take you seriously.
For whatever reason my dog always checks out the dogs on TV, but only on your videos.
Thank you very much for this practical video, utilizing 2 different methods at the same time really helps.
I just want to ask if the treat toss happens while dog barking, would it end up being encouraging barking? Thank you
This dog isn't even reactive
Because the training is working lol
This isn't really an argument
Lmao what are you talking about? 😂 this dog is literally one bad decision away from a lawsuit
What about an 8 # chihuahua that gets uber excited and goes crazy barking at visitors. He loves people, generally
The guest is trying to be a friend. But I can't ask my guests to be this patient, and the dog is a crazy one. I dont what to do
Hey Joel, can you make a video on how you Would handle a dog that’s reactive in a car.! barks at every one and anything that comes near the car or goes by the car..
My grandfather always said, "If your dog or your horse doesn't trust someone, you shouldn't, either."
Sound wisdom I have applied to my life with nary a cause for regret.
Tyler has been classically conditioned
My dog gets super-agitated when the vacuum is on. How can I help her relax?
This was just what I needed! Thank you!! The discipline method works with my pup. My question is whether the pup ever grows out of it if we keep working on it. Have you seen it stop altogether?
I really hope you did not pop the leash of a puppy? That's the quickest way to injure their necks.
When she raised her hand to adjust her hair that triggered him.
In my opinion, Shelter dogs are amazing but sometimes mistreated in shelters in Texas!!!
Yup, my year and 4month old gsd barks at guests and when neighbors are outside close to the front door. Ugh...
I wish you showed up when searching for dog training also. And not only positive reinforcement people. Sure it might work alright if you get your dog as a puppy. But fixing leash pulling or barking at people with positive reinforcement is nearly impossible even if they claim it’s super easy.
You can actually see the work you have been putting in .
His nose was working!
Instead of barking like crazy .
Hello from a fellow Beckman! Hope to learn some stuff for our dog.
my dog is the same way!! he's an almost 8mo old working line gsd
