thanks for the vid . I found it easy once you remove the electrical plug its possible to unwind that screw with a phone charger or any 12 volt charge cable with the ends stripped off , then compress the piston and repeat until its bottomed out . No need to remove the motor assembly . Time saver :) now that park brake light can't wait till
i finish the other side and see if it goes out .

Good stuff thanks for posting this up. I just did my B8 Passat using the exact same method of winding the actuator in. Calipers are different, but procedure is the same. Not much excess length on the motor cable, so you have to be careful not to disconnect the connector. Have to say the quality of parts as OEM on the car is shocking, 50k miles on a motorway based car and the brakes were ragged. The calipers will need refurb next time, I've the car from new. Last brakes I did was on an '01 E39 3.0D, fronts changed at 170k miles are rears at 140k.

Do you have the button with the Wrench icon in the dash? If not, the service reminder cannot be reset without a software tool. Unless I've misunderstood something, if the sticker in the spare wheel container in the trunk has code "QG1" then your dash will be missing the Wrench button because the car is supposed to use flex service interval where computer estimates the service times and the setup assumes that you actually want to have it serviced in official repair center. If that's true, you need something like VCDS or OBDEleven to reset the service notification.

I'm using a t30 to move the motor but I think its rounded a nut off and can reset the piston to get the caliper back on. Ant ideas on what I could to or is it a whole new caliper

Hi Leigh yeah if you wear the teeth down the only way is to replace second hand maybe might be an option to keep the cost down

I got parking brake fault after assembling everything. Parking brake works fine, just throws error message and yellow "P" light on dash

I followed this tutorial and I'm getting a horrible burning smell and my wheel is smoking. Not sure if I've went wrong somewhere but do you have any ideas what this could be?

Unrelated thats a separate issue might be your clock spring behind the steering wheel has shorted out nothing to do with the brakes I would think

@@tonyakautos I feel like it's the piston motor that's the problem, possibly didn't wind it back far enough. I've bought a new motor anyways and gonna put it on to try it. I initially changed all of my break pads to clear the 'check brake pads' light and it didn't clear it and that rear right wheel is the only one causing me problems. Got some extra pads aswell so gonna follow again step by step and more carefully 👌

I tried this but, the piston will only recede part way. It stops at the half way point. What can be causing the piston from not winding fully back in?

If you are absolutely sure you have rotated the screw that would normally operated by the motor the whole way, I'd guess your caliper has rust or some other thing broken inside the caliper. I'd just replace the whole caliper because those cost about 50 EUR a piece. If you feel lucky, you could just get repair kit but in my experience, once the caliper starts to misbehave, it never works correctly without reworking the metal parts and then it's cheaper to just replace the caliper.

Anyone else getting premature wear on the outer pads on the rear? The pistons are not stuck and one of the calipers is brand new so that's not it... Right now the only thing I could suspect is the pad clips being old... but I've sanded them down properly and greased them and the pads move freely. Guide pins are not stuck either. I am completely lost...

The caliper may be seized if you do that it will go back but the piston may be seized. What are you pushing it back with

Put a load of wd40 or something around it also make sure you take the brake fluid cap off sometimes that helps

Save yourself the hassle and put a 9 volt battery across the motor terminals to rewind the piston, then squash it back in with a C clamp. Easy squeezy
