I had 70 Impala custom back in the day. Nice car. You hardly see any survivors. It was a real big seller at the time. I’m surprised there isn’t more of them around.
It was a spark of genius for the guy who came up with the idea to put a window in the distributor cap to allow someone to adjust the dwell with it running, perfect couldnt get better than that
sir you are my hero for this walk thru for dummies I just purchased a 71' C-20 3/4 ton custom sport fleetside with the 5.7L 350 and its been in an inclosed garage for the past 20 or so years without being started and i know almost nothing other than air, fuel, and spark this has been a great help, thanks
I'll say one thing I enjoy watching Jonathan work and listening to him talk he can do all three things without drop an F-bomb nowadays that takes Talent just want to say thanks Jonathan appreciate it
My dad was always messing with parts cars we picked up , checking engines if they didn't start , getting them running . I never forgot main things , check points , clean and regap them . Make sure of spark and getting gas . Our yard always had parts cars , people would want scrapped , they were our source of parts . Almost like being early rad rod builders. My dad passed on a number of years back , he would really have enjoyed this videos of yours as much as I do . Excellent job of explaining what you're doing , keep them coming when you can !!!!
Been a while since I've seen someone use a dwell meter, my dad and I were shade tree mechanics in the 70's/80's and during that time motors were simple (as I am sure you know) and there wasn't much that couldn't be fixed with a fresh set of points, plugs, dwell meter, timing light and an AM Radio to listen to while you worked. Naturally todays engines are FAR more efficient and rarely need looking at as long as you change the fluids regularly but it was fun to keep them going back then.
It's been a long time since I seen anyone use a dwell meter and know what points are, let alone how to adjust them. I'm surprised the bearings in the water pump weren't squealing on you. Well done, and hope someone gets some use out of this.
I bought a 73 Impala in the summer of 93 when I was still in school. The odometer read around 5,000 miles because it was turned over, I gave $500 for it and drove it during the summer but rode the bus during the school season. Graduated in 95 and immediately started a new job and used that old car as a daily driver, only big fix i had to do was getting a new drive shaft made because some of those old cars had 2 UV joints in the rear with a stabilizer in the middle and it wasn't worth getting another wore out 1 in a junk yard plus the flex plate had chipped teeth so it would be hard to catch it to turn over the car but other than that the car was a worrier when it came to taking me any where I wanted to go. Watching this video makes me wish I never got rid of that old car...
I had my 1971 impala convertible running and driving around the yard, all within an hour. It sat for 17 years. I unhooked the fuel pump from the line to the gas tank. Ran a hose from the pump, to a gas can. Hooked up a new battery. Primed the carb with clean gas. She fired right up. Made sure I had brakes. Checked for leaks. All was good. Drove the car around the back yard.
What the man says about battery strength is the truth many times there is not enough power left in a battery after a while of cranking that the ignition system does not receive enough power to get going. many of us have 2-3 batteries on stand by for just such work.
i know this feeling....love it... cant remember how many hoods ive been under doing the same thing... its been a while, gonna go out fire one up just cuz.
Thank you Jonathan for providing these videos and I admire your skillset..It has motivated me to get more of a Hands-On experience with my vehicles.. Thanks
Another great score Jonathon, That was an easy start for as long as it had been parked, even the radiator may be still good to use since the person used antifreeze and it is not full of rust. For just starting it up like it was it sounds dam good, I can only think it will run well with a complete tune-up. I bet the trans is very low on fluid, I would first blow off all the acorns off the motor then check fluid in trans to see if it will move.
Maybe you will read this old post. The power wire going to the coil is the ballast resistor. There is a yellow wire(if I remember correctly) that goes from the starter solenoid to positive side of the coil. When you crank engine, this wire supplies 12vt to the coil. When you release the key, it runs on ballast wire. 😉
Wow I remember my grandfather's '69 Impala. Had a 350 4bbl/ 300 HP dual exhaust engine. Fantastic engine. Remember it had steel cables connecting the engine to the frame around the motor mounts to keep the engine from ripping itself away from the frame. It was a powerful engine. This Friday, I pick up my spanking new 2017 Impala loaded to the hilt. Has a 3.6 L V6 with 305 hp. This is NOT my grandfathers Impala.
salsaman06 Those steel cables were installed on a Recall Notice from GM in '69. I was 6, I remember my parents dropping our white/red '69 Custom Coupe (255/350) off for installation. I've broken both of the mounts on my '68 CC (275/327) over the last 29 years. It doesn't take much. The first one took the fan shroud out. I don't know when/how they broke. The car doesn't get jerked around.
Engines got complicated and hard to work on starting in the late 70's with smog controls and EFI and electronic ignition in the '80's and OBD1 and 2 in the '90's.😎
that brings back memories, my brother and I used to bring in old cars that people gave us or sold real cheap. some of them we started on the spot and brought them home with a jug attached on top of the hood, like you, we didn't try to use the old gas. those old cars were so much easier to work with than this new junk. as you said, taking the transmission out wasn't a big deal, that's why I like my Subarus,, the engine sets in the way an engine should.
I did the same thing, ran into my first in tank electric fuel pump on a Pontiac Aster (vega) I used a window washer tank with the washer pump off a Trans am as a fuel tank and pump. Made it the 10 miles home. I have had old gas make the valves stick in the guides before.
lol it's great the way country boys can make do with what they have . I borrowed a friends old dump truck and the fuel tank was a 5 gallon can tied to the mirror , he reminded me to check the can once in a while because the gas gauge didn't work. lol.
Those impalas were a dime a dozen in boneyards back in the day you could get a motor out of one of those for a 100 bucks w low miles they were only 2 bolt 2 barrel motors that weren't really saught after but they ran just fine lol
Easy fix to that. Pull the front off the engine, yank the rad. slip out that cam and put the 350HP/327 cam in it. put it back together and feel the difference in the seat of the pants.
Boy she sounds healthy !!! Ahh , setting dwell ! I don't think I would see that being done again , thanks for showing that . In fact I still have a dwell meter in my tool cupboard !!! Nice video !
I have a 69 4 four door, had it all my life. When we was in high school nobody ever complained about 4 doors, it's still the coolest thing I ever drove. Owned well over 20yrs. My youngest son just took to prom. Almost just like this one without the dust and rust ,and it's a caprice
Had a 1970 Impala HT company car with a 350 with the 2-b 2GC carb; slam it down and would lay rubber-- was suprising as this was a California lo-lead eco engine.. Ran so good I bought the car after the 4yr lease was up for $1600.
You should pull that motor Jonathan and do a series about dropping it in a Jeep Wrangler TJ. There's a lot of guys clamoring for a Chevy powered Jeep now days. I think I read that the Jeep 5 speed trans and Dana axles work well with the Chevy small block as long as they aren't pumping out 500 horsepower but then not much would hold up for long.
I used to drive a 63 Impala as , and the ignition wouldn’t lock and someone stole it , but I found it six or eight blocks away with the 4 speed linkage jammed , so from then on I used that same coil wire trick the rest of the time I was visiting my friend.
that was real strange the way that someone messed with the wires to the distrubetor I dont think I have ever heard of messing with an engine that way ! I didnt sound half bad but there are a ton of acorns I have never been around them before ! awesome !
I use to own one of those. Loved it, was a four door. Why would you want a big car that nobody can get in the back? Much less, that huge door on a two door you can't even open in a parking space.
Hi Jonathan, I came across the video of you attempting to get the 1970 Chevy impala 350/350, what I did notice about the yellow wire that you used to start the car was hooked up at one end, the other end you put straight onto the battery, Can I give you a little tip, use 2 pieces of wire, one to the battery, one to where the yellow wire is hooked up, use a permanent off button, ( like a secondary horn button) put that in between the 2 wires, that secondary button acts as a starter switch, hope this idea helps Jonathan. Sam K from Australia
Put a quart of Rislone in it will help those valves and lifters you'll be able to tell the difference in 5 minutes it will smooth that old motor right out. My dad used it and i've used it millions of miles never had any problems
i'm actually building a 4 door right now. in my opinion they look way better than a 2 door. mine is getting a 5.3/t56, coilovers, all new suspension and the factory turquoise color back on it.
I've heard about people do'in the 0l' Spark Plug change before back years ago when the hoods didn't lock. This car would make a Great Demolition Derby Car I want it. he-he.
Hey Jonathan, If you go to drive that car , be careful ! We had one just like it my dad bought new . It had the 4 wheel drums with with no power assist, it had the worst brakes of any car I ever drove. At highway speed you might as well put your foot through the floor like the flintstones to try to stop it. other than the brakes it was a great car, thanks for posting your videos.
i found a burnt out 69 donor with disk brake set up on the front i bought the whole car and swapped everything over including the master cylinder on my 69 impala man what a differance that mad eit would slow that sled down fast lol
first time viewer, I'm hooked! and I like your recording style... explaining what you're doing, nice clear zoomed shots, pretty damn smooth for POV work. and lol @ the sabotage that's a good one!
that switching the wires around is what we did when my grandma refused to give up driving and would not give us the keys she thought the old car was just dead and slowly got use to not driving and couldnt afford to get the car repaired
yep somebody definitely sabotaged that distributor and no coil plugged into the center. Too bad you are gonna use that impala for a parts car I would have liked to restore one had a 68 impala i kick myself every day for selling. Cant find one of them anywhere but a '70 with a 350 would be the next best thing. Thanks for sharing
So pretty much it's a safe bet.. Any car sitting that long. Can't use the gas in the tank gotta cut that line..got it. Thank you sir! Have Blessed Day.
Wonder what the story is behind that distributer...... very odd!!! Thanks for sharing. Like others enjoyed and learnd a fair bit too. Nice delivery Jonathan.
You gotta stop sayin' it's just a 4 door and good for parts. By golly, air conditioning and a V8. It's all there. Maybe slap a 4 barrel on it and make her a daily driver.
I could tell it would start just because it had the right amount of acorns covering the intake manifold. That tells you that the squirrels who have owned it for the past 23 years, have been spending a lot of time ON the engine, probably keeping it maintained. Also, the tires look fantastic! In the short time that the camera panned over the rear tire, I could see that it's inflated to the proper -0- pounds of pressure. Also, the fact that it's a 4 door means that it will be highly sought after by collectors, who will buy it in its current condition(with acorns) at the next Barrett-Jackson show for at least $240,000. Just kidding...
So, if you convert one of these old girls to hei, you have to pull the wire out of the bulkhead connector and install an hei supply wire from another car. Pin connector holes are the same. Wire inside the vehicle is as heavy as wire your installing. I had a 70 2 door. Swapped mine out.
Yeah, that switching of the wires is a good ol boys anti theft maneuver. I have a 70 bel air. Same car basically. Other than emblems and very few other things.
I've got a 1974 pontiac 400CI. Car has sit for 7 years. I've replaced the battery starter and rebuilt the carburetor to the tee. I started the car after changing the filter and oil. I didn't run it to long just long enough to hear and make sure it would run maybe 20 seconds. my next step was rebuilding the carburetor and replacing the float to remove any varnish that the old fuel left upon rebuild their was plenty of varnish. After carburetor rebuild I tried to start the car it would only turn over it would try to catch and run but wouldn't. I didn't remove or drain the gas tank or tune the car up. Any pointers. Car wasn't stored inside the garage it was kept outside. Thank you
its not the engine, it's the guy running the gas squirting pop bottle like in the other video. he expects the thing to start on a mist of fuel; i see in this video he must have opened the hole up bigger.
Also had a Montgomery Ward light but I never used it. I just took the car on the road, would stand on it, and if I didn't get any pre-ignition, I would pull over and advance it. I just repeated the process until I heard early detonation and just back it off a tad.
I have a Radio Shack Dwell meter!!!and rpm meter, and dcvolts meter,,all in one device!!!year i bought:1981 cost:100 dollars...but more friend send me to Argentine!!I have this device yet.
I had 70 Impala custom back in the day. Nice car. You hardly see any survivors. It was a real big seller at the time. I’m surprised there isn’t more of them around.

Nice all original chevy impala would look nice restored great find cheers from north Florida
Yes it would!! I would put it back just like Chevrolet built it!!!
My Grampa used to switch plug wires on the drunks he used to work with to make sure they didn't drink and drive
Gustavvvvv 😂😄😄hahaha
Hard to kill those Chevy motors. The more u ran it the
better it sounded!
Yes it did!!
Jay Howell chevy motors always sound gorgeous mine sounds like a tractor
Good ol tried a different true Chevy man!! You can't keep a good motor down bro!!
nice I like the 69s 70s they look real nice with Cragars SS's with White walls 14s
That motor sounds better the longer it runs, Supernatural fans will be going nuts.
That engine does really sound strong for the time it sat inop. A keeper.
It's been a long time since I seen anyone use a dwell meter and know what points are, let alone how to adjust them. I'm surprised the bearings in the water pump weren't squealing on you. Well done, and hope someone gets some use out of this.
i have a 1961 cub cadet (original first year) and a 1948 farmall cub. they both have points. i have never owned a car with points.
I know what a dwell meter is, what a timing light is, and what points and a condenser are!😋 I've fiddled with old cars before years ago!😎

Good running 350 very tough motors indeed. I would love to have that engine in my old Chevy pickup with a 4 barrel carb. Good show Jonathan..
Amen maybe even use a rodchester q jet on it.
that old motor sounds dam good for sitting that long. i would use that old thing
It appears to me that is not the original motor. Someone I think swapped it out.
Thant's funny looks to me like it has factory air setup on it. Who would go through all the trouble to setup a/c on it ?
Jonathon I would like to talk to you about 47 Chev coupe rear window
Amazing ,love watching you start those old engines!
This baby was bottle-fed back to life! Great video! I love watching engines being brought back to life!
What the man says about battery strength is the truth many times there is not enough power left in a battery after a while of cranking that the ignition system does not receive enough power to get going. many of us have 2-3 batteries on stand by for just such work.
I love old school, I'm 63 and a retired " Jack-of-all-trades "
Jonathan really enjoy the videos of the old cars keep it coming thanks👍😎

I was roasting them!!
ME TOO....LOL...!!!
Jonathan W I'm just guessing but you probably have about 9 fire extinguishers laying around right
No just a pack of hotdogs
Jonathan W ahahaha
these type of videos always make me smile....

heartbreaker watching this beautiful ol girl there too bad cant save it thanks for the vid
You do the best cold starts on RUclips thanks.
That's good motor. Hard to kill.

Those old Chevy motors are the best! This guy is a cool Cat!
Back in the early 70's my Dad had the same car. But that 250HP sure was no match for my 70 Duster 340. Duster said 275 HP but sure ran good!!! Jay
Jay Hahn the duster is also a lot lighter
Jay Hahn Impala weighs way more than a Duster. I owned both.
gay Hahn
Those impalas were a dime a dozen in boneyards back in the day you could get a motor out of one of those for a 100 bucks w low miles they were only 2 bolt 2 barrel motors that weren't really saught after but they ran just fine lol
Easy fix to that. Pull the front off the engine, yank the rad. slip out that cam and put the 350HP/327 cam in it. put it back together and feel the difference in the seat of the pants.

Now that's a cold start.
Yeeee buddy
I love cold starts!
Ah yes the old switch the coil theft deterant ..... definitely a tuff old good one to use for sure...
As an amature how can only fix lawn tractor engines, that was impressive. Nice work.
The squirrels were having a regular "block" party on that engine compartment!! Lol!!!
I could listen to that run all night :)
Dam I don't care if it was a 4 door I'd take it
I agree with both of you; a cool old car is a cool old car, doesn't matter if it has four doors or not. Same with wagons.
4 doors for kids in the bask seat
Four doors don't bother me either. On some cars it just looks better.
I have a 69 4 four door, had it all my life. When we was in high school nobody ever complained about 4 doors, it's still the coolest thing I ever drove. Owned well over 20yrs. My youngest son just took to prom. Almost just like this one without the dust and rust ,and it's a caprice
Since its already beat up i would take the body and stick it on a 4x4 chevy fram and jack up in the air about 2 feet with big mud tires
Had a 1970 Impala HT company car with a 350 with the 2-b 2GC carb; slam it down and would lay rubber-- was suprising as this was a California lo-lead eco engine.. Ran so good I bought the car after the 4yr lease was up for $1600.

We need more videos like this
that was real strange the way that someone messed with the wires to the distrubetor I dont think I have ever heard of messing with an engine that way ! I didnt sound half bad but there are a ton of acorns I have never been around them before ! awesome !

I love your videos. I would enjoy helping you start one for the first time.
I had 1970 Bel Air with the same 350 cu engine it great give good service for many years.
For and old motor that has sat that long, she is purring and idling really good.
Sounds like the hubby didn't want the ole lady going out at night with those wires switched....lol.
Junior D
I've heard about people do'in the 0l' Spark Plug change before back years ago when the hoods didn't lock. This car would make a Great Demolition Derby Car I want it. he-he.
It would for sure!!
I'd love to have this car.
Nice motor had one just like it in a 70 el camino. what a runner.
Hey Jonathan, If you go to drive that car , be careful ! We had one just like it my dad bought new . It had the 4 wheel drums with with no power assist, it had the worst brakes of any car I ever drove. At highway speed you might as well put your foot through the floor like the flintstones to try to stop it. other than the brakes it was a great car, thanks for posting your videos.
zonie1953 Hydroboost will fix that right up...
i found a burnt out 69 donor with disk brake set up on the front i bought the whole car and swapped everything over including the master cylinder on my 69 impala man what a differance that mad eit would slow that sled down fast lol
for some reason I find this very interesting and relaxing.
Love the sound if the cranking!
first time viewer, I'm hooked! and I like your recording style... explaining what you're doing, nice clear zoomed shots, pretty damn smooth for POV work. and lol @ the sabotage that's a good one!
Thanks!! Welcome aboard! Hope you enjoy!
Nice sounding old 350. Would be a good motor to rip out and throw in something else for sure.
Great vid! A little Sea Foam in the gas and oil and a new fuel filter will help a lot.
that switching the wires around is what we did when my grandma refused to give up driving and would not give us the keys she thought the old car was just dead and slowly got use to not driving and couldnt afford to get the car repaired
Could have been the situation here too! Lady was very old and it's my understanding a little out in left field.
If shes for sale, Id love to get my hands on it. I love those old boats.
Oh yeah...those good old Frigidaire AC compressors.
Love watching your videos.
yep somebody definitely sabotaged that distributor and no coil plugged into the center.
Thanks for posting, great video...learned some things too..👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 keep it up!👍😀
Wonder what the story is behind that distributer...... very odd!!!

Man this makes my heart sing
Nice one, it lives!
So sad I love four doors so much I just restored a 72 4 door nova
Cool!!!
id give it some love.
I have to agree four door are even better on family cruise too and insurance.

Raised on chevy
Yes there is a ballast resistor. It built into the vehicle wiring harness.
That's going to be an awesome project!
Pull that motor! Put some $ into it and stick it an old Nova!! 👍😀
My 69 blazer sat for 25 years and fired up and ran on the old gas after only installing new points.
Jeez, these old things start faster than my Opel corsa which got fixed up by a mechanic..
nice running engine for setting for a long time!
So, if you convert one of these old girls to hei, you have to pull the wire out of the bulkhead connector and install an hei supply wire from another car. Pin connector holes are the same. Wire inside the vehicle is as heavy as wire your installing. I had a 70 2 door. Swapped mine out.
What’s the attraction with rodents that make engine blocks so appealing? Must be really cold in the winter for them.
Thank you
If that was a 318 LA it would have fired up immediately
its not the engine, it's the guy running the gas squirting pop bottle like in the other video. he expects the thing to start on a mist of fuel; i see in this video he must have opened the hole up bigger.
We had that same dwell meter when I was growing up... I am guessing Sears, but can't recall for sure.
me too
Also had a Montgomery Ward light but I never used it.
