One of the few videos that explains and demonstrates clearly how and why to get the back longer than the front. Great demo on elastic, too. My spouse laments so much that her favorite brand of jammies has gone out of business and I have about 15 yards of flannel. Time to fire up my Janome.
Best tutorial I've found yet! Thanks
Out of all the "how to sew pajama pants" videos out there, this one I found most helpful. Thank you!! ❤️
Thank you SO MUCH! At 68, I'm entering the sewing arena a bit late, but all this mask sewing has given me a sewing bug. I did make a wrap-around skirt in high school, and a pair of bell bottoms to wear to Woodstock... and I haven't sewn a thing since until the need for masks ! Since I'm tall, 99% of the pajamas I buy shrink on the first washing, and the bottoms come inches above my ankles. This is where you enter the scene. I watched your video and thought... hmm, I think I can do this! Well, tonight I can tell you for sure... I CAN do this, I DID do this (though I do still have to hem the bottoms), they fit, they're comfy, and I am in HEAVEN! I actually made an article of clothing that I will actually wear, proudly! Thank you thank you thank you! If these hadn't turned out, I would have become frustrated and simply walked away, never knowing how wonderful it feels to not only complete, but be able to WEAR something I made myself! I have another 3 yards of flannel, and tomorrow I'll hem this first pair and make my second pair! Then, I'm gonna get creative and make a pair of sleep shorts, still using the same methods! Niler, you're a fantastic teacher, and I'll sew with you any day!
This is the best pj tutorial I’ve found. Can’t wait to make a pair.
Great tip about letting feed dogs ease the fullness. That could come in handy. Thanks!
As someone new to sewing I need clear tutorials and yours is the best I've found. Thank you Niler! I can't wait to try these today.
Cool Kelli, thanks for the very nice comment! Happy Sewing!
I just made my first pattern and finished my pajama pants following your instructions! I watched lots of other videos but found yours the easiest to follow. The tips you give for the crotch seams and easing (okay, mine wasn't the best attempt), and your way of putting in the elastic all helped this be one of the least frustrating sewing projects I have attempted. Thank you!
You are so GOOD! You explained everything... not everyone does that, you know. I'm on my pajama's project right now. Thank YOU!
Wow! Thanks for the nice comment!
You are AMAZING...
THANK you for your time and consideration to teach this properly.
I would have been lost in the sauce if it not been for you.
Aaawhhh...thanks Misty for watching and for the nice comment.
I just love this tutorial, best I’ve come across, especially on how to match the front and back with wasting! Thank you so much!!
I just got to thinking i need to get some more summer length pajama pants done. My only lightweight pair is threadbare on the rear end. So much so that they are see-through and also acquired a hole. Lol so i began my search on here to use my older pair of pants to make a new pair. and i found you. i think God sent me a miracle. this was the easiest tutorial to understand and so well done i could hug you to pieces right now. i have some light weight fabric i want to use. buut now that i know how to do this i can make warmer ones and lighter weight ones. i knew this way of making a pair of pajama pants using an old pair of pants existed. it was just i couldn't figure out where to find the video. so thank you so much Niler. i mean it. i have save the video and subscribed and liked this video. you are such a great teacher. god bless and hugs. oh your way of doingh elastic was something i have never seen before but it sure is easier than making a casing and trying to get elastic pulled through with a safety pin. so thats going to help me greatly too. wow what a great video.
Kool Beanz! So glad you found my video and so happy that is was helpful for you. Happy Sewing!
Awesome tutorial! You’re a natural-born teacher. Thanks a bunch!!
Best tutorial yet thank you explained well, unlike others that are so complicated thanks again
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much! Great video, great explanation. I bought a Butterick pajama pattern, but after looking at it, I shook my head and said "Oh, forget it, it's too complicated." Now with your video, I can make myself a new pair of pajama pants. ❤
Greetings from Singapore ! Yes , your video is SOOOOOO HELPFUL for a beginner like me. Thank you !
This is exactly what I was looking for. Very nicely done! TFS
You are so welcome...thanks for watching!
Your instructions are very easy to follow. I made a duplicate pair of pj bottoms in just a couple of hours. Thanks!
You are so welcome, thanks for watching.
Hi Niler.....you answered all of my questions b4 I asked them 😊......this is how you teach y'all......thank you so much
Hi Niler. I have no interest in making my own pajamas, but I still watched the video cuz I knew I would learn something new. Loved the way you inserted the elastic, way easier than the way I've always done it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us hobby sewers. Happy sewing to you too my friend.
Cool. I like doing things the easy way, and I love inserting elastic this way. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for that. The first time I made pajamas for myself,I did not allow for the fact that my butt is bigger than my front(significantly so).I fave a small frame, but I have "a backside." The result was the front had too much fabric.I am so thankful for the TouTubers who have helped me to affectionately refer to RUclips as RUclips University.
Ms. Taylor, you are a genius, and this is a brilliant video! I have been looking for two weeks for exactly this video! You have made me so happy! (And all the men in my family, by extension, because we can't find their favorite PJs anymore, so mommy is gonna copy!) THANK YOU!!!!! 😊
Best teaching video I have seen! I am going to watch it over and over as I make my new PJ's! Thank you!
Thank you!
Niler! Thank you for sharing this video!! I am undertaking this exact project to duplicate my husband's pajama pants to make a pair for Christmas. I was so confused as to why my back outside seam was longer than my front outside seam, and of course it makes sense that our rear ends need more room. Your idea of using the feed dogs to gather it for you is brilliant! Fingers crossed, I'm about to go cut my fabric!
I'm sure it' going to be fine and your husband will love them because you made them...Happy Sewing!
Thank you for an easy copy of Pjs. Just about to make some, them I’m going to make some nice silky one for day wear for my holidays
Have fun! Glad my video was helpful, thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this video.I have pants patterns and I have already cut the fabric, but I realised that even if I like to wing things,I had to look up how to sew tue pieces together considering rhe allowance for the backside.
Thank you so much for this video!!
Thank you! I have a pair of pants that fit just right, and have been searching for someone who can help me make sense of it. You are the BEST! :-) Now I'll never be without my favorite pants again.
That's so cool! I'm so happy that my video was helpful for you!
You are awesome!! Best on tutorial ever!!!

Nice tutorial!
Thank you!
Hello Niler, i have just finished using your technique to make a pair of summer 3/4 length trousers. They look brilliant, Thank you.😊
Wonderful! You are so welcome.
Literally the easiest way to sew. Ill give this a try
Cool...you'll love it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you! This is just what I needed to see
This is SUCH a great video, thank you. I followed another one that didn't differentiate between front and back like you have and also didn't say anything about easing and feed dogs etc.. I guess they wanted to make it seem simple but one actually needs to know these details or else you end up with a failure, like my first pair (too tight around crotch area). Thanks so much, I am about to have a second attempt using your instructions, fingers crossed.
I love your videos. Even though I've been sewing for years I still like seeing how others do it. I always learn something new.
Me too. I love watching other sewing channels to pick up tips. Thanks for watching.
This is still a great video even after 1 year ago! Wonderfully crafted, yet clear and beautifully precise for every Beginner 😊 thank you ☺️

Great video. Thank you much.
Love it ! How you fold the material? In half ? In 4 th ? So confused
Thanks! Good info
Love this video. Thank you for sharing 😀
You're welcome Karen.
Mrs.Niler when putting the leg inside one another how do you know that you are putting the right sides together , I have tried several times and mine does not come out right . In this video looks like your using cotton fabric no stretch, when i use 2 way stretch or 4 way stretch i have no problem i hope you can help . I enjoyed your video and hope to duplicate the Jammy's. Thank you your Awsome!
Yes, right sides are together. Glad you found a procedure that works for you. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Niler!

Thank you! Thank you!
You are so welcome Amy...Happy Sewing!
If anyone can answer this it would be great. I’ve watched this several time and being a preschool seamstress I can’t figure out what the difference is between the front and the back. I get that there is a difference in length but how did she adjust for that when she cut out the front. Thanx for any help.
Thank you! I thought I had done something wrong.
This will sound stupid, but did you fold the material over so it was doubled? Selvage to selvage or length size. I couldn’t see how you positioned the material for measuring.
Wow.... this was the best video I've seen on this subject.... thanks for doing it! Greetings from Canada btw!!
You're welcome Karen, thanks for watching.
Thank u!
THANK you so much, now I can make my PJ'S THE RIGHT WAY. I HAVE ALWAYS CUT THE BACK TO EVEN IT TO MY FRONT PANTS
NO WONDER THEY DIDN'T FIT ME RIGHT AT THE WAIST. AND THAT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE INSIDE ALWAS LOOKING LIKE IT'S PULLING , COULD THAT BE MY PROBLEM🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hi Georgette, it sounds like it could be. If the back crotch in too short, it will pull. Glad my video was helpful for you...Happy Sewing!
Hi , when you have measured the elastic was it from the original length of the waist before you pulled it? Thanks
Great instructions! If I do not have a serger, what do you do for the inside seams of pj legs to prevent fraying?
Hi Annette. Check out my recent video on 6 ways to finish seams without a serger. Heres a link, copy it into your browser. ruclips.net/video/67vEk4zsJg8/видео.html
Hi Niler, will this same process work if I use stretch cotton fabric? I was just wondering if it would gather at the back in the same way, or if I would need to do something different?
If you cut the pieces to match, using stretch fabric won't matter, the left and right back pieces should still match up.
Hello!
I have a doubt when I finished to cut the from piece and the back piece, the back piece is more longer than the front? My primary languague is Spanish and don't understand some parts.
Thanks
Great job
Yes Sonia, that is correct. you back piece should be bigger than the front because our back side should be bigger than our front side.
❤❤❤
Great tutorial ❤️❤️❤️
New subbie here🥰
Thank you!!!
I messed up and the relaxed waist is to small. How big should it be before putting in the elastic?
The waist band should be the same width as the waist of the pj's. You can decide how much "gathering" you want at the waist which will determine how much fabric is left for the elastic.
Did you pre-wash your cotton fabric? Also, what width of elastic did you use? Great video!
Not in this case I didn't, but you can if shrinkage is a concern for you. As far as the elastic goes, I used a 1" elastic. You can use any width that is comfortable for you. Hope this helps, thanks for your question.
How much material do you need to make these?
What did you use to mark it? What kinda pen thing is it?
I followed your video and my pajamas are to small. Don't know what happened.
Did you make sure that your pattern was flat so as to make sure your were getting the right size of your pj's ? You have to make sure that you stretch your pJ's so that that they are wide enough to give you a good pattern.
I love you! I wish I had seen this a long time ago when I started sewing. I've always shied away from reproducing pants but now with your tricks, it's full steam ahead. You don't happen to live in Michigan, do you?
LOL Jenny...no..I don't live in Michigan...too cold! LOL. Thanks for the nice comment and I'm so happy that my video was helpful for you. Happy Sewing!
How do I finish the raw edges if I don't have a serger?
You can zig zag the edges, use pinking shears to cut out your pjs, or you can roll edge the seams to finish off. Hope this helps...Happy Sewing!
Thank you, will try while watching your video.
Sorry for wrong spelling niler
It's okay Elizabeth...technology...gotta love it!
