I started to learn French after I bought a ruin in SW France years ago, the position of the y and en has always been problematic. This is the clearest explanation I’ve found .
About three-quarters of the way through the video, Dylane explains when to use "la" etc. instead of "en." That part of the video, though short, is very helpful.

Answering in case someone else has the same question :) Y always goes before the auxiliary and the verb. In case of two verbs following each other (but not a compound tense), y will be placed before the second verb :)

Thank you Elena ❤️ You are not the only one confused by "son frère" in the comments 😅 We can also say "s'occuper de lui", both work in this case. Just keep in mind that when the verb is followed by DE, we will use EN, even if it's not abstract. Does it make more sense ?
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Dylane, I think that we were a little confused because some french teaching sources say EN and Y should NEVER be used for people. But maybe that is being too formal and this rule is now ignored in general usage ??
It's definitely a case by case area. I shouldn't have include it because I feel it will confuse you. But it all comes down to the verb and verbs followed by "de" aren't always let's say people friendly. For example Manger de would refer to cannibalism if used with a person, but it works with animals. Does it make sense ?

Additionally, in English, you can use as many replacement pronouns as you wish, but conversely, in French, you are limited to two replacement pronouns in one sentence. For instance, in English, "I gave these clocks to Isabel at the library" can be shortened to "I gave them to her there", but in French, it CANNOT be done like this. The original sentence translates as "J'ai donné ces horloges à Isabel à la bibliothèque", but the sentence using only replacement pronouns CANNOT be "Je les lui y ai données." So instead, there would be three possible choices to reword the original sentence using the two replacement pronoun limit: A. Je les lui ai données à la bibliothèque. B. Je les y ai données à Isabel. C. Je lui y ai donné ces horloges.

His brother is a person and en is used for "him", is this just an exception to the general rule, en cannot be used to replace people ? For "s'occuper de son frère" we could also say "s'occuper de lui", both works. But since s'occuper de" is followed by DE, we use EN. Always look at the abstract part of the sentence but also at the verb, if followed by de or à or simply nothing, "J'en ai eu assez" is correct, everybody will understand, but after a meal we would use the verb "manger" = J'ai mangé assez / J'ai assez mangé / J'en ai assez mangé J'espère que ça aide 🙂

Additionally, in English, you can use as many replacement pronouns as you wish, but conversely, in French, you are limited to two replacement pronouns in one sentence. For instance, in English, "I gave these clocks to Isabel at the library" can be shortened to "I gave them to her there", but in French, it CANNOT be done like this.
The original sentence translates as "J'ai donné ces horloges à Isabel à la bibliothèque", but the sentence using only replacement pronouns CANNOT be "Je les lui y ai données." So instead, there would be three possible choices to reword the original sentence using the two replacement pronoun limit:
A. Je les lui ai données à la bibliothèque.
B. Je les y ai données à Isabel.
C. Je lui y ai donné ces horloges.
But it can be "là-bas" as a replacement for there 😉 At the end of the sentence in this case tho.

For "s'occuper de son frère" we could also say "s'occuper de lui", both works. But since s'occuper de" is followed by DE, we use EN. Always look at the abstract part of the sentence but also at the verb, if followed by de or à or simply nothing,
"J'en ai eu assez" is correct, everybody will understand, but after a meal we would use the verb "manger"
= J'ai mangé assez / J'ai assez mangé / J'en ai assez mangé
