  • Learn the simple math to know when to start a Fleegle Heel based on your row gauge. The Fleegle heel gusset is the final section knit in a toe up sock that determines the foot length. Be sure your sock won't be too short or too long for your foot in 5 steps.

Thank you for this formula! The Fleegle heel is my favorite, and now the guesswork is gone. I'm applying this to the newly-begun sock on the needles right now!

I usually make cuff down, flap/gusset. After 20+ year hiatus, I jumped back into socks (sorry, pun …) and Whoa!… sock yarns changed! And going from DPs to 9” circulars (love ‘em!!) … well, my calculations are different. Which is fine. Result: for every yarn base/dyer/brand, my row count varies/changes. I’ve learned to embrace the 2” or so that I need to frog to give me best fit.
    Sorry for long story…
I really DO want to try Fleegle heel, as Short Row/Afterthought heels don’t work well w my high instep. I know about the “work-arounds”, but some days I just want to knit! I have a few toe up Fleegle patterns, most say to start the increases at the “hinge” point of instep. Makes sense. Or not???
    I don’t mind “mathing”… actually love math!!
I find your sock explanations interesting, and want to get the pattern.
How do you adjust stitch count/s from foot to ankle differences, using a Fleegle? Example: I dec at gusset to fit smaller circumference of foot. So, is the reverse true for toe up Fleegle??
Whew! Thanks for creating these videos!

Important thing first, I love puns!
To answer your question the gusset starting around the hinge of the foot is ideal but it does really depend on the row gauge. Any pattern should break down the stitch count and number of gusset increases for you, if you like recipe style instructions the creator of the Fleegle Heel breaks it down here fleeglesblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/leegles-toe-up-no-flap-no-hassle-sock.html?m=1
So long road to a short answer, I’d still recommend going through the math whenever your row gauge differs from the pattern, which as you note can vary with each yarn.
