This lens is amazing! 20-70mm focal range is quite perfect for general daily use. I can see this lens being a great back up lens for wedding photographers as well. F4 is good enough for most well lit situations. And having a 20-70 range can cover group photos as well. F4 would struggle at low light situation but thats why we carry prime lenses to go to work! Another great review Julia! My journey toward a wedding photographer started with watching your channel a year ago. I want to say thank you for making all these videos. I hope you and Dan will have an amazing 2023 years ahead! (Also, 35mm is also my favourite focal range😊)
Thank you and I agree! Not everyone needs f2.8 lenses as they don't work in low light or just never shoot at those wide open apertures. Weddings are a good example, travel/landscape photography is another one I could see this lens getting used a lot for.
Julia, I have the Sony A74 as well, and the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM that I use a lot. I don't do the portrait/fashion stuff and do mostly travel videos/photos. I have the Sony 50mm F1.44 GM on order but have been thinking about getting a zoom for more versatility and still a lightweight travel kit instead. I like the idea of a walkaround zoom and then a fast prime for low-light situations. With the Sony A74 and the focus breathing compensation, I want to stay with the Sony lenses that work with it. I have always liked the look of the 50mm (1.2 GM was always out of reach price-wise), similar to how you love the 35mm! However, I am trying to decide on this zoom and the 24mm or this zoom and the new 50mm. What would be the deciding factors for you if you wanted to put together a kit like this for travel photos and videos? Don't know if this matters as well, but I also have the Sony FX30 (aps-c cinema camera) so any/all of these lenses could be used there as well.
Julia, you could sell snow to an Inuit! You make every lens you review shine with your amazing camera work but I bought the Tamron 20-40 f2.8 instead and am not unhappy with my decision.
This is off topic but always intrigued me, often you take pictures while filming (example- 1:09)? How do you manage to do it, is there any extra gear you use? I thank you in advance, it would be something that could help me immensely in the work I intend to do... if anyone here knows the answer I would be very grateful also
Price is $1098 in the US. Lenstip review is up and its MTF sharpness graph is off the charts, sharper than the Sigma / Tamron f2.8 zooms as well as the Sony 24-105 f4. Not sure about the Sony f2.8 G Master.
I appreciate the fact that Julia got down to business and made some superb images with this new lens. No drama. Some of the other reviewers today couldn’t stop griping about the f/4 max aperture which worked my last nerve. ;)
but the f/4 aperture is crippling as soon as the natural lighting fades.. so it's a very important factor and a reason why this lens won't hit as hard as it could
Thank you! I agree, not everyone needs an f2.8 zoom lens so to me this being an f4 is not a huge deal. For wedding photography this f4 zoom can be super handy for the majority of the day, then switch to a prime for the low light stuff. Travelling/landscape photography as well!
Plus some of us use a flash during low light situations. My 24-105 is my go to lens for a lot of shoots but I would prefer a lighter lens. The Tamron 28-200 was versatile but I missed the sharpness of the 24-105. Looks like the 20-70 maybe sharper than the 24-105 and definitely lighter. Very intriguing!! Thanks for the super review.
Tamron if you shoot in low light situations or like shooting at f2.8 often, this lens if you want that extra reach of 70mm but shoot during the day or with higher apertures more often.
Yeah for sure, can you please email me on juliatrotti@gmail.com and attach some screenshots of what your images are looking like? We can go from there to figure it out!
I think this is good lens cheaper than GM lens、20mm start、F4 is enough bokeh、AF Fast 、Stabilization is good BTW Description is wrong😂 ×Sony G 20-40mm f4 lens ◯ Sony G 20-70mm f4 lens
Thanks for your great review! Unfortunately I'm not impressed by the slow aperture of this lens. Also don't like the bokeh balls of this lens and final and worst issue with it is its price in europe: 1600€. For that price I can get a 24-70mm f2.8 GM (version one).
The 24-70 f/2.8 GM II was released only a year ago and is more expensive. Some people don't want or need that extra stop of light, or can't afford a GM lens.
How many f2 3.5x mid range zoom lenses do you know of? Not even a thing🤷♂️ the cost and size of such a lens would mean few would buy it. Not every lens needs to be super fast.
What I find a bit frustrating about your channel, is you only focus on females as subjects.... why not men?..... or.... even some landscape photography???. I haven’t seen any vids of yours.... of product reviews (ie. lens)... that you don’t use a female as a subject... there’s more to using a lens than just portrait photography of females.

Keep the 2.8’s. No reason going back to F4.

No complaints here for instance a sports photographer would not test a new telephoto lens by shooting wildlife keep up the good work Julia.
Maybe the field of expertise is different, you can refer to other videos, landscape photographers, male model photographers
Males are humans like females , they pose for cameras etc so why not more men Brett , I agree
Julia has three videos with male models. Search "Julia Trotti male".
