Small , light , excellent macro capability, f2.8 and a 67 mm filter thread - yes, my money went to the 50% cheaper (! ) 20-40 f2.8 Tamron lens. If I want more versatility I will change over to my Tamron 28-200 f2.8- f5.6 and call it a (Happy!) day!

    • @SourPlanet
      @SourPlanet Год назад +7

The Tamron is only cheaper because you spent the money saved on another lens.
The Tamron is only small and light because you added another lens to the kit.
Sounds like you made a good choice for you, but a choice irrelevant to the topic of the 20-70.

@@SourPlanet Oh, terribly sorry aptly named "SourPlanet" that I added another opinion to the conversation. Maybe you didn't watch the entire video to the end where Gordon listed off a few viable alternatives to the Sony 20-70 f.4 including the Tamron 20-40 f2.8. I actually thought I was contributing an interesting real life example as a satisfied owner of the Tamron to potentially help some one else thinking of buying such a lens. Fortunately, I am lucky enough to own quite a few lenses so I can choose what I need to carry in my kit depending on the situation. In Canada, the Sony 20-70 F4 costs $1,499.00 plus tax ( 13% in my province) whilst the smaller Tamron lens costs $949.00 plus tax. Surely price differential does factor into making decisions between similar lenses.

Great review. One thing that Sony users should truly be grateful for... is choice. Not just the standards but also some novel formulas. This imagination is terrific. Sony's diminutive 16-35 G, their new 24-70 GM, the Tamron 20-40 (and all of Tamron's zooms in fact) are other examples of choice for Sony users. If you told me 12 months ago that Sony was going to really innovate in lenses, I'm not sure I'd believe it. I like where this is going...
If only Sony bought Olympus and copied their build and ergonomics for cameras... camera life would be pretty excellent!

This lens finally puts to bed the old 24-70/f4 Sony Zeiss which was below par (my copy was huge disappointment back in 2014!). And I would prefer this over the otherwise excellent 24-105/f4 OSS as on the latest high MP bodies a small crop in post will make up the short tele deficit. Small, and lighter to boot and that 20mm will always come in handy. Another Sony hit. Excellent and fully comprehensive review. Again.

I probably wouldn't buy it now BUT if I already had it, I probably wouldn't switch to the 20-70, I'd instead be saving up for the Mark II GM and maybe complementing with a 20 1.8 prime if I needed 20mm.

I've replaced my 24-105 with the 20-70 as my main documentary workhorse on my FX3, and so far so good. It's lighter, yet still feels solid, and sits better in the hand. As decent as the 24-105 is, I always felt that the rendering was a bit flat, and this new lens has a bit more life and crispness to it. With the dual base ISO on the FX3, I don't often struggle for light, and can always hop onto a fast prime if need be.

      Great.
I have recently acquired the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens too.
However, one thing is bothering me or rather I would like to clarify whether it is a general issue with this lens or whether it is a defect specifically with my lens. The lens makes a noise when focussing (with autofocus).
By the way, the volume of the noise varies depending on the aperture setting. At f/4 the noise is very minimal, almost inaudible. From f/4.5, however, it is clearly audible. And the higher the aperture number (for example f/13), the longer it takes to focus and the longer the noise lasts. However, these differences are small.
I am not yet familiar with focusing noises from lenses recently released by Sony. For example, the new Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G and the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II are 100% completely silent. The older Sony FE 18mm f/1.8 G, on the other hand, also makes the noise described above, if I remember correctly.
Does your lens also make this noise? Many thanks in advance!

Thank you Gordon. I couldn't push the order button, before I watched your review! 🙂 I only have primes (24G, 40G, 20G, 35GM , 135GM and Sigma 65mm) they are all amazing lenses and I'm not sure if the 20-70mm can replace any of them. (maybe 24G) I compared the 20-70 sharpness with 24-74 GM II and the results were surprisingly good. Actually I can almost say that, Sony made an F4 version of 24-70 GM II lens with this one. Extremely sharp through almost all focal lengths and very versatile.

I would love to see a new and much better small FE 70-300 (maybe a GM with f/4 or f/4.5 at the long end) and a 18mm f/1.4GM with low coma and astigmatism. 18mm would combine a high quality universal zoom beginning at 24mm very well (the existing 20mm G is to close, the 14mm GM to extreme). This lens weak spot is the frame edges and corners at 35mm, only f11 provides half decent performance. It’s a shame you only tested at 20 and 70mm. The other thing to note is that until lens profiles become available shooting in raw is not really practical with this lens as the distortion correction required is a moustache shape and not easily corrected. Once again we are at the mercy of adobe.

So what you're seeing in all of the others is uncompensated clips, but do keep an eye on the caption as many were at 70mm and I didn't see much breathing across the full range at that end. Also as you pointed out, shorter distance racks will be less noticeable than one from infinity to macro and back!

Great review as always. I hope an A9III is available by next year. Along with a 500mm f4 (for those who need it). Sony's new lenses are really making the system much more desirable, in many ways. Now, let's refine the A7R5 AI AF, put it in every new Sony camera, and maybe put it in the A1 (or A7IV, which is not likely to happen, but why not dream). This lens, along with the Tamron 50-400, makes for a relatively lightweight walk around lens combination with any Sony full frame body.

Nowadays most optical issues are fixed digitally and instantly inside the digital cameras but that doesn't mean that the full frame Sony 20-70mm f/4 is a really good lens.
I appreciate digital lens correction inside the camera only with kit zoom lenses which have to be small, light and above all very cheap.

In the old days you'd correct for, say, geometry with another physical element or group. Now they can do it digitally for a lighter and smaller - and sometimes cheaper - lens, without any visible impact to the image. Both are corrections to achieve the same end goal, and the end goal is what counts really.
