I love that you're using the a7C. Underrated camera, and yet still crippled. I wonder if Sony will respect the Panasonic S5 II and compete with the upcoming a7C II.

Even the new 24-70 F2.8 Gmii has bad distortion when uncorrected . I guess it's the price to pay for keeping the lenses small.

At B&H the 135 1.8 is double the price of this lens.

Definitely must have been asleep when this was announced. Totally passed me by, thanks for posting. Very interesting but, 24-70 GM ii FTW! Bought it, love it, must convince everyone it's the most amazing lens ever so I never feel I wasted my money over a 24-105 G, or this one. Probably still wasted, but oh well.
I really don't mind digital corrections as long as they're automatically applied/have a Lightroom preset. If anything it means that the lens is so strong in other areas (i.e. sharpness) that they give us the ability to make up for and take design compromises for gear that would otherwise not have been possible.
That and half the time people complain about optical imperfections on new gear, you know somebody would be huffing and puffing about how much character it brings if we were talking about a vintage prime 🥸
(I do love and collect old glass also, no shade there tbh)

Currently, you can get a Sony 24-105mm f/4 and a Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 used for the price of this lens new. Currently I don't understand the value proposition unless you just wanted one lens.
sports. means you now have a 20-70mm and a 70-200 range on two bodies. Most dont need wider than that but saves having to carry a third body with an ultrawide for group shots.
filmakers. all purpose lens that can do everything. Combine with a 50mm or 85mm f1.2 for low light, bokeh shots and thats all you need.
landscape photographers. This is one lens to rule all daytime work. You rarely need wider or more telephoto. One body and lens means you can pack light.
You've answered yourself. Some people do really want one lens. Or maybe two lens (the other being a telephoto such as a 100-400)
Take as long as you need to get your videos out. From a D7000 user that is loving that Sirui 24mm Anamorphic on my z30. Thanks, and next time you’re in NYC I think you’ll love the advancements made to Governor’s Island. Hopefully you’ll have time to shoot there.

The US price on this lens is less than the APS-C 16-55mm 2.8 G. Kinda kicking myself for deciding to stick with APS-C two years back when I bought that lens, now...
I suppose the distortion shows why the price is lower, but to hell with it when it's so easily fixable.
Same. I've sold off most of my APS-C stuff. Funny enough I still have that 16-55 I'm trying to get rid of. One of the best on the aps-c I just don't have any bodies anymore.

I don't understand the obsession with edge to edge sharpness, I mean are you going to use this lens for commercial architectural photography? I don't think so. This lens is obviously aimed at videographers where lets face it with most cameras cropping for 4K & 8K the edges are irrelevant.
Considering replacing my 24-105f4 for this new lens....but i think it will not include the 8stop stabilization feature with the 7R5

F4 is kind of weak af.
Plenty of other fixed aperture lenses are f2.8.
FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR for one (24-85 equivalent)
Sure I often shoot at f5.6 or so. But it's much nicer to have the OPTION to shoot at 2.8 when you need more isolation in tighter shots.
For me, a PERFECT standard zoom with will a 25-50/2.8 or even 3.3 with impeccable optical performance and compact dimensions. I don;t need it to go to 20mm and I certainly don't need it to go to 70.

The only G lens I have is the 90 macro. It's my favorite lens not for the G but because macro lens are SHARP. 🗡⚔️🗡⚔️🗡⚔️🗡⚔️🗡

I can’t afford any new camera equipment. What’s a fraction of the price and in Canon? When I say Canon I mean the 70D.
There is one cheap vintage canon that works well... 28-70mm II f3.5-4.5 (Until you find an 'L' lens... Also Lots of fun to be had with cheap adapters... OM, NK, M42 to EF. Add a matching Tamron Adaptall II ( To accommodate Tamron Adaptall lenses...) and grab some great value vintage.... Primes and zooms. E.g Nikon 28 to 80 kit lens, D not G version, is sweet... Of course it will be Manual focus and aperture shutter only.. or if lucky with 70D, A priority..
Yes a cost, a big one because it's a top quality Sony....worth every penny too. But not worth it too me because it's not a fast enough aperture

Here in the EU its 1599€ incl 19% VAT. This is completeley crazy, given the local US price of around 1000€ and the price of around 1850€ for a grey imported 24-70GM II incl. VAT. THis is not a G lens and shows compromises at the edges of the frame. I will buy as soon we get the "right" price. Or I get something similar from a another manufacturer like Tamron or Sigma. Normally Sony follows a resonable price politics. This time they are completely OFF the market.

it's always intersting to see that optically nothing really got improved in the last 70 years... but the processing has gotten so good that it doesn't really matter anymore
