The ABANDONED Sequel To Shin Godzilla That Never Got Made

- The abandoned sequel to Shin Godzilla was going to be a monster movie brawl directed by Shinji Higuchi after Hideaki Anno left behind ideas for a follow up that was inspired by Toyo’s 1970’s kaiju movies. This movie never mentioned the disturbing monster in Gojira’s tail at the end or even Anguirus but was going under the name Shin Godzilla Raids Again. Personally the Heisei movies did this the best but the Reiwa films could shape up to be great too.

I would like to see a sequel to Shin Godzilla made, but if they don't make it, I'll honestly be okay with it. Unlike other franchises that end on a cliffhanger that's never resolved, I actually really like the idea of Shin Godzilla ending on an ambiguous note with the feeling of dread that the threat will return one day. Same with GMK ending on Godzilla's disembodied heart beating at the bottom of the sea - a truly haunting ending to my favourite film in the franchise.
Imho, Shin Gojira is a resolved story. The threat is defeated, but ultimately it shows humans are the worst monsters. It just doesn't have a character explaining that to audience with words like an American show would have. So i would rather be happy to se polished remakes of some Heisei Godzilla stories where Godzilla was a tragic character and a victim of humanity but ends up involuntarily saving human kind from consequences of our own stupidity.
ya its sad its cuz toho didnt want the og godzilla like design to be surpassed with shins other evolutions. smh...
should have let anno have his way and vision and let it be a one and done thing.
I do like the ending of "Shin Godzilla" as well for much the same reason. While it was ambiguous enough to allow for a sequel, the notion of the hanging dread you mentioned is perfect as well.

The end of Shin Godzilla will forever be the one of the best cliffhangers of all time to me. I remember seeing it for the first time and being hit with genuine “what the fuck” feelings. And in every viewing since, it still gives me a little tingle in my spine. I’ll always wish to know what would’ve come of that story.
What the fuck is this bullshit is more like it. Horrible train wreck of a movie.
That’s a fair point. I’m just downright disturbed by the movie. I really think it was the closest humanity came to annihilation because of Godzilla. He would’ve just kept evolving.
I honestly respect Toho's decision to keep Shin staying and the "Tail-Creatures" NOT being a sequel hook. The idea that they're simply "humanity was THIS close to having MORE monsters" was honestly cooler to me.
It does feel more "arthouse" in that sense (people do NOT expect kaiju movies to have ANY symbolism) but Toho has handled it with grace ever since and I respect them for that. (if anything, the tail creatures should've looked more like G so it's clearer what they represented, rather than looking so humanoid and raising questions)
I mean the original Godzilla was symbolism in itself.
The tail creatures were Godzilla evolving and taking over earth as like
An army of Godzilla humanoids. Than they would spread to space And eventually take over the universe... these come from the concept notes.Crazy, but. I like it.
I think the idea of humanoid looking Godzilla species is dope because, toward the end of his life his instinctual ability to adapt caused him to become a more destructive being, a human. Because we suck as a whole 😅
@@BattleBrotherCastenwell a simpler explaination would be like this. When shin Godzilla was getting frozen the instinct knew it was not gonna work by being a single organisms so it instead separated into human looking beings since it evolves to take on something it can't defeat that being humanity and since the only thing it got defeated by was humans it instantly made human like beings but was unsuccessful because of its defense mechanisms having flaws
@@gojirasaiyan3256true it makes but I can kinda see why people are divided since it doesn't look like Godzilla at all

Watch Shin Ultraman. That's your other movie.
What I'd like to see is Shin or Biollante appear in a Legendary Movie. Both kaiju are the result of human mistakes and/or blind ambition. In a Legendary movie Biollante is a species of Inner Earth and perhaps the most dangerous one. In the real world there are fungi that latch onto ants and other insects and grow into their brain making them 'zombies'. So a giant plant kaiju that spreads its spores and zombifies anything it touches including kaiju.
For Shin, it would be a revenge attempt story by one of the human villains that survived King of the Monsters or Godzilla vs. Kong. The villain gets enough blood and stuff from Godzilla and other kaiju after one of their fights and creates Shin Godzilla.
Bro I'm American and I looooove Shin Godzilla soooo much. I would have loved any kind of sequal for it. Though I'd prefer something darker. I loved where the tail was going. I really respect Godzilla cause of the message behind the original movie. I love King Gidora, don't get me wrong, but I feel like Shin Godzilla respected the original message vs some of the sequals and reboots.
Sequel is called Shin Ultraman.
That's a lot of fish.
Got an interesting idea, like what if those human size creatures comming out of Godzilla's tail can eventually mutate into different varieties of Kaiju Sized Monsters, maybe even forms that are familiar with Monsters from other Godzilla Continuities. Like if they would have made sequels to Shin Godzilla, that would be an interesting direction to take to show how a population of Giant Monsters came to be, and it would make Godzilla not just the King of the Monsters, but their Progenitor
That's actually a really cool idea. I can imagine at first, the humanoid mini Gojis would attempt to emulate the humans' collective attack with teamwork, but then when that doesn't work, they start to individually evolve into horrific versions of previous monsters like Anguirus and Rodan.
Can't believe hardly anyone is noticing this comment
SPOILER ALERT. After they left Godzilla frozen but still alive at the end of the movie they totally owe us a sequel.
Well he was still alive but they said he would die a little later

Also, how do you explain the title card in Shin Ultraman, which says Shin Godzilla before turning into Shin Ultraman?
@@ultimate_capper3643 no the sequal to shin godzila is shin megami tense both in japan, not ultrassman
Sounds like we dodged a bullet actually. Either way, I’m cool with Shin Godzilla being one and done. It told its story, the message was clear, and it was fantastic.
A sequel focusing on those creatures could have been interesting, but I don’t know if the special effects would have been good enough to sell it, and I assume Toho would insist on a PG-13 (and Japanese equivalent) rating which would kind of limit what they could do with them. It’s easy to show Godzilla wreaking havoc since he’s gigantic and everything around him blows up, but with those creatures the destruction would have to be a bit more close-up to the humans, which could make it more intense.
Regardless, I’m just happy we got the film that we did. It’s my favorite Godzilla film and one of my favorite movies, so you won’t find me complaining that a (seemingly sketchy) sequel never happened.
And I really liked Shin Godzilla especially when he unleashes that purple beam.
*TOHO* should've made a sequel with those *Shin-Godzilla-humanoid-zombie* things from his tail. It could've been the first ever *Godzilla-zombie movie* with elements of terrifying horror. Then maybe those *humanoid-zombies* could exposed to nasty chemicals & pollution and form a weirder version of *Hedorah* or something. Or possibly thousands of them form together and create *Varan.* I think it would be weird yet unique. I really like obscure elements that ultimately give us a unique film.
Don't forget about the winged variants that would have spread the devastation around the entire planet. Ooo, I know people might hate this but I just had the idea of a movie where the creatures on Godzilla's tail begin to thaw out, and so there's this race to find out how to keep Godzilla contained before he completely wakes up, the whole time dealing with a growing army of these humanoid monsters wreaking terror.
And it need not have a happy ending. Just look at how we're failing to avert disasters of our own making right now.
Yea OK....LMAO
I consider SHIN GODZILLA tied with the 1954 original as best Toho GODZILLA movie.

Pretty sure the "he's not alone" bit was just refering to Gojira's tail splitting into several mini humanoid-Godzillas
Godzilla wakes up, his tail splits, now we follow both Gojira wrecking havoc, and minis, intelligent, hunting down any Bid G's bullies.

As long Godzilla doesn’t grow a second head on the tip of his tail, nor transforms into and galaxy sized hive mind nor transforms into another universe, but what you said is instead what happens as long as he doesn’t lose his entire tail or grows it back like a lizard, then it’s all fine with me.

Most people sadly didn't get the social criticism in Shin Godzilla , because a lot of it was routed in Japanese culture. And for Japan, that social criticism was very strong! Aside from that, the effects and the idea of Shin Godzilla was great, we had a blast watching it. Sad that the sequel was scrapped.

Japanese video game and movie developers really love ending their stories on cliff hangers for us to remain hanging off of, don’t they! It’s a pattern, whether intentional or not, that I’ve seen being the common case with Japan. Regardless if it’s a video game or a movie, they don’t pick up where they left off, even when it’s a type of ending where they really should.
Well Godzilla and the Human Godzillas were definitely dead after the end of the movie
I'm glad no sequel was ever made. Shin Godzilla will always stand on it's own.
Crazy how the Minus One trailer just dropped two weeks after this video. 😂
Well, I may have just one little theory about that abandoned sequel: it had to be a "remake" of "Godzilla: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" where Shin Godzilla awoke again and attack Japan but have to fight the three mystical guardians of the country such as Angilas (a.k.a. Shin Anguirus), Varadaki (a.k.a. Shin Varan) and Baragora (a.k.a. Shin Baragon.)
To me they had so many options to go for a sequel from what we seen with the human things on the tail, to the deleted scene of a mass of cells, the concept art of another Godzilla coming out from the main body like asexual reproduction and even the initial cause. Shin Godzilla rapidly evolved due to eating nuclear waste so what if something else ate it? With that we can have nightmarish versions of other monsters. I like the idea of the human monsters on the tail coming out and getting things to combine with Godzilla for even more evolution or spreading. Having a Godzilla split off will give us our first Godzilla vs Godzilla match that is more equal rather than the space Godzilla.

Shin Godzilla is the polar opposite of what westerners would want in a Godzilla movie. And that's one of the reasons I love it.
Such Westerners don’t even understand who Godzilla is, if Emmerich’s Godzilla is what they want.
@@thebosstex1172 buddy westerners DO know what they want from godzilla if we're talking godzilla fans and shin is loved by half of the western fanbase, even then western fans don't care if godzilla is a villain or hero, as long as he's recognizable it's all fine. G98 is a godzilla western fans universally don't want and still don't want or think of when they think of godzilla 25 years later.
It's mostly general audiences who don't know what they want from godzilla when their perception of godzilla is fiddled with misconceptions. Some people think godzilla is only for kids (which isn't entirely true), some think he's only a villain or hero (isn't true, he's both) and others think he's g98 and nothing beyond that (which is beyond not true). The MV is their first and only exposure to at least what godzilla is as a hero.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts many who live outside of Japan, westerners included, even though not all who live outside of Japan, prefer the G98 movie over every other Godzilla movie, because they don’t understand who Godzilla really is supposed to be (and they think all of the Japanese movies are too cheesy and goofy to even watch once). Maybe the most recent MonsterVerse movies have cleared that confusion up somewhat, but it still is out there. G98 was killed after being hit by twelve missiles, and can’t even use atomic breath. Many, Toho Company included, have even dubbed G98 as not a Godzilla, but as “Zilla,” without the “God” in it. Many people who know more about Godzilla even say that isn’t even Godzilla, despite being called “Godzilla.” Many people who don’t know very well about Godzilla but think they do, when they actually only know about the G98 movie and don’t care about the other (and more true to nature) Godzilla movies, are still confused and will say “He’s so weak! Shoot ten or twelve missiles at him and he’s dead!” The more knowledgeable fans then will say “The real Godzilla is much stronger than you think. The true Godzilla can survive a whole army shooting missiles at him.” The confused people then will say “Oh. Well then just shoot more missiles at him” but then the knowledgeable ones will say “No, you don’t understand. That won’t kill him. Not even a nuclear warhead bomb will kill him, but may temporarily bruise/scar him, but then afterwards the radiation will just make him stronger and bigger.” I actually was part of two conversations like this before, where other knowledgeable fans and I were trying to explain this to confused people in order to clear up the confusion. These confused people obviously had no idea that they had no idea who Godzilla was. With the newer movies, I think they are probably starting to realize they were confused. This confusion however is why and how the G98 movie did injustice to what makes Godzilla Godzilla.
@@thebosstex1172 It depends on the region of the world and how much of the Japanese godzilla films (or even the MV films) they been exposed to. Obviously the misconceptions still live on (even in America to a extent) but the MV films did clear up the misconceptions to a extent, even if it was small. G98 did give us some good things but at the same time, it did permanent damage in the long run and added another dumb misconception to godzilla's image among non fans

Shin Godzilla is one of those rare films that I consider a "perfect" movie. It is by far my favourite Godzilla movie and probably the truest to the original Godzilla, which wasn't the goofy monster-fest people today think of when they think "Godzilla". This was a horror movie but on a massive scale. Japan facing destruction from a creature man could scarcely comprehend. Told dryly, in a way that way that brings to mind suspenseful nuclear catastrophe stories like "The China Syndrome" and "Chernobyl". I'd love to see that world continue.
And please don't get me wrong, I love the goofier Godzilla entries. they're great fun. I spent most of college getting drunk with friends watching classic Godzilla movies like "King of Monsters", "Destroy All Monsters" and "Biolante". And I totally understand why people would prefer movies like those over a film that focuses on the bloated weight of the Japanese government straining and collapsing under its own mismanagement of a walking natural catastrophe. I love a good hamburger too, it's just sometimes I would really rather have that steak dinner in a nice restaurant, too.

I still want a shin Godzilla sequel.. even if Godzilla isn't necessarily in it. The little Godzillas could have been scrapped, but I think it would have been cool to see him evolve into a different monster entirely and they even hinted at that in the movie. So what if say, Godzilla began to get a split in his tail, grew wings, his neck begins to elongate and split into 3 heads and who does that sound like?
Alternatively I would have liked to have seen a straight up Monster Mash, where his tail does drop out other creatures that evolve into other monsters and now they're fighting again. Alternatively they could even play up the likely possibility that Godzilla is a hybrid with an ancient water reptile and a human being, have Godzilla further develop his consciousness and find a way to communicate. Just completely go a different route where he's Frankensteins monster who starts to realize he wants to be left alone and makes his way to an island off the coast of Japan where he's brought the worlds radioactive waste and then both he and humanity can get along. Honestly, thank God that the concept never got off the ground. I find it really interesting that Anno proposed the re-edit, but I think if it came out, it would have been seen as an insult to the original and reviled by everyone.
I can not picture a world where a movie that won awards in its home country being spliced into something for "global audiences" would have been taken well. There is a reason we don't do that with film anymore because it's like... really disrespectful and tactless?
Shin was something the brand and the character needed for a long time, a grim reminder of what godzilla is. Godzilla is scary, a nightmarish creature born from one the most vile events in human history. While the campy stuff has its place and can be enjoyed in its own right (I love Ghidorah the Three-headed Monster), anecdotes from the people who made the showa movies time and time again lament the loss of the teeth the character had.
So this notion that one of the best films in the franchise and a breath of fresh air after a decent stint of rot needed to be changed to be more palatable shows a complete lack of understanding of why shin and by extention, Godzilla is great.
I think it's much better that we didn't get a sequel. I'm more on the side of "not everything needs a sequel, no matter how good it is", not only because sequels are often disapointing when they don't meet our expectations, but because having a proper ending is good, even (especially) open endings. You have questions, and that's the point, you don't get the answer on a silver plate, it makes you think by yourself what it means, and in Shin Godzilla, the idea of "we were that close to something horrible, but we did it just in time" is just chilling and satisfying, feelings that would be nullified with a sequel
Honestly I'm kinda happy that we didn't get a shin godzilla two since I wasn't a big fan of the first movie
I know the movie ended on a cliffhanger of sorts but honestly I think that Shin Godzilla should be left as a one and done. The movie was more about evolution than anything and ending the movie with that open ended image of what the humanoid evolution could have been is the best to me.
There actually is a sequel lol. It's called Shin Ultraman.
@@ultimate_capper3643 no the sequal to shin godzila is shin megami tense both in japan, not ultrassman
I'm kinda glad they didn't make a second one because they need to follow up on the humanoid creatures he's turning into, you can't just act like it didn't happen
I wasn't able to see Shin Godzilla in theaters because the nearest theater showing it was a good 3-4 hours away.
I think US theaters didn't think people would watch a movie with subtitles still. Dang shame.
Yeah it was a super limited release. It didn’t stay in theaters long either
We were also close to having a shin king Ghidorah right? I remember some people predicted that or something.
just imagining how godzilla couldve kept evolving to even more terrifying phases makes myself shit bricks
Shin was great ,but they really could have cut down a lot of those meetings . but the monster and its evolution was amazing . and last thing i need is every damn movie westernised .
I’m still going to hope for more Shin Goji content.
It's been long enough that Toho is doing the smart thing and letting it lie as is, I concur. It's been long enough and the movie was divisive enough among fans as is that perhaps it's for the better. Not to mention, while maybe a "Shin" version of "Gojira no Gyakushu" might have been interesting to see reinterpreted through the lens of the "Shin" series? I wouldn't have liked the approach, as it might have clashed with the established vision of said series. That is, the grittier and more grim dark vision it has. So again, let this sleeping dog lie, I motion.
I personally think that, for what Shin Godzilla, as a film, was going for, a typical "Godzilla VS other monster" film wouldn't have really worked as a sequel to it.
So they had another character take his place lol. Shin Ultraman.

I literally searched up if there was a planned sequel a few hours ago, but I kinda thought in my mind what if a second shin arrived, and it would cause the original shin to be released, and then 2 shins would raid the city, with it ending with the original shin dying, and the new one ran away
I still want to see a sequel that uses the Form 5 (humanoid) split off of his tail as well as the Form 6 (bigger Godzilla puking acid blood) rampaging simultaneously, and just when Form 5 is defeated and it looks like Form 6 is almost finished, all the Shin Godzilla matter comes back together and transforms into the Form 7 for an ultimate showdown in the third act. I think THAT would be fucking cool.
shin was best godzilla in 40 yrs. i have watched since i was little boy . i am 57 now. remember being excited fr the new G movie. wish they would have a new shin
The synopsis for the shin godzilla sequel points more towards another evolution rather then a kaiju vs kaiju film. The closing shot of shin godzilla shows that godzilla was producing humanoid offspring in order to swarm the planet. Its also likely that godzilla would have evolved even further past that point because sketches of extra forms had him essentially become a otherworldly being akin to something out of lovecraft book. A kaiju vs kaiju film would have been an absolute turn around from the first especially since the film plot was based around Japans failure to quickly deal with threats and protect its civilians.
I think Shin ended on a great note. The humanoid monsters are great visual shorthand for what they were trying to get across - we were seconds away from being surpassed and destroyed and we may not be so lucky if we ever repeat our mistakes. A sequel would only muddy that message.
honestly im glad that shin godzilla didnt/wont get a sequel. part of what makes that final shot of the film so chilling is the lack of context or clarification. your left with your own thoughts and interpretations, and we all know theres nothing scarier than that
To me the "point" of a Shin-Godzilla sequel should be the idea of Godzilla's spawn mutating into/becoming the other monsters.
Maybe the hunk of flesh from the one deleted scene growing and becoming a shin-anguirus, maybe the little humanoid Godzilla's running amuck like a zombie film- biting/irradiating humans to create more until fusing together to create Destroya or just other Monsters on-general etc.
With the whole classic "monster fighting" just being the whole idea of the seperate mosnters all 'competing' for survival as they all see themselves as seperate creatures or improved variations on the original 'creator God lifeform' that is Godzilla.
I love the Shin Godzilla design. It really looks like a mutated mess of a creature. I would've loved a sequel down the line with a truly alien-looking Ghidorah.
I'm honestly glad they never made this version of a sequel. It misses everything I loved about Shin.
I am American and I absolutely love "Shin Godzilla". I could not wait for the movie to come to the U.S., and while I was not able to see it in theaters (due to the film's limited theatrical release) I bought the DVD the moment is was released.
I would love to see Shin Godzilla become Shin Ghidorah. That would be an insane twist. I know Shin Ghidorah was in the Godzilla vs Evangelion ride. But man it would be cool.
I would watch an entire sequel movie about the government trying to find other uses for the Special Crane Division after Godzilla's defeat.
