I've been following these guys for a few years on their FF14 journey. Glad to see you check them out. As part of their community, I've been trying to tell them to just play more, I feel like explaining from a third party can only help understand GW2 a certain amount. Thanks for the video!
Exploring gw2 is amazing, tbh, never seen a world this full of life and fill with exciting things. Just talk to random npcs, there are so funny conversations. They did not have to give those NPCs any interaction, but they did. I do an experience with a friend im gw2. We level a new character without using mounts. And I play the game for a few years now (6-7, not sure tbh 😅), and I play it a lot! I just recently discovered, that gandarran field has another JP beside the well known one. Just by thinking about how to reach the rich silver ore up a cliff I found the entrance. Its in the south-east, east of the entrance to lion arch. And this is the amazing thing in gw2, even after years of playing thousand(s) of hours, you often discover new things you just didn't know
NPC chatter is hidden gem! And ques when you fight with big bosses "it feeding on husks, don't let them go to wurm!" can't say i didn't know what to do
15:30 @RubeusCubeus Just for context, the blond-haired man (Garrett) had previously said in a video "I'm sure as sh*t never playing Final Fantasy XIV" and then the dark-haired man (Kyle) eventually tricked him into playing it, and now they've been streaming primarily FFXIV for the last couple years. This is a riff on that (and why Kyle looks directly at the camera afterward). The Grinding Gear boys mentioned your video specifically on stream so I'm here to check it out. Liking your vibe, and you definitely have a bunch good-faith takes and responses in this video, which is very refreshing for reactions!
i have been playing gw2 since the beggining now, i have maybe 3 maps complete, but i have 7 lvl 80 characters, because all i do is pvp, i have legendaries and full ascended set, only from pvp in the mists, and i wvw sometimes. This game can be whatever you want it to be ! And it has the cleanest combat
3:20 And if you explore for exploration sake, you may find a jumping puzzle or a multiphase event chain that spawns a zone boss. Or find yourself on a unofficial side quest that has you teaching a dragon egg the meaning of fear by pissing off a bunch of angry chickens to summon an evil chicken that can't be killed. :3 One of my favorite things is all the awesome weapon skins you can find hidden about. Ever since I found the Eclipse two handed sword weapon skin I haven't used anything else on my mesmer.
As someone who's been trying to get friends and classmates to play this franchise since Guild Wars 1 launched almost 20 years ago, it has never been easy explaining why it's fun and worth playing to a majority of people who were trained to think online games are one specific kind of thing. :D Also, you're definitely a part of the Guild Wars 2 community by now Rubeus! (I do hope you check out Warframe one day -- although I wouldn't consider it an MMO, but it's got really fascinating lore, amazing gameplay if you're okay with third person shooters, and amazing devs)
As for the double staff comment, you can! althought it doesn't make much sense for most builds, but if you want to proc a benefit through weapon swap like sigils or a trait but you don't want to use a different weapon then using two of the same does happen (staff/staff mirage, staff/staff daredevil, several builds for thief actually). Here's a bit more advanced thing, if you have a mainhand weapon and no offhand on the first set while having an offhand weapon but no mainhand on the second set, the game takes it as if you have both at the same time. And you can do weapon swap with this setup without really changing weapons, so you don't have to do, for example, dagger/dagger-dagger/dagger, you save money by doing dagger/empty-empty/dagger.
Along the sigil line: classes that can't weapon swap in combat (ele/engineer) often use the same weapon in both slots: - This lets you use a stacking sigil like bloodlust. At max stacks, you can swap to your primary weapon and have the effect of 3 sigils
S/S Mirage is a great example. You'll use a sigil to give you back endurance on weapon swap then use the endurance to gain Mirage Cloak (by dodging) to proc both the ambush skill (which gives you boons and deals dmg) and proc whatever abilities are tied into the cloak. It definitely doesnt work on all builds but some do very well with two of the same weapon.
The funny thing about him saying he's never going to play old-school RuneScape is that he (kind of famously in the GG community) said "I'm sure as s*** not gonna play FF14!" on the show back when he left WoW. Then, Kyle (the other guy) convinced him to give it a try, and now they're an FF14-centric channel. 😆
I've just lately stumbled over you very first gw2 related video again and I'd love to see you reacting to it after you've now come so far in the game. Tbh I'm really impressed how quickly you understand and adapt to the systems gw2 throws at you.
You can go double greatswords. You are right the cooldowns are shared but the sigils on the weapons can be different and if there are bonus effects on weapon swap it would still trigger so if you want to camp one weapon it's a viable strategy, albeit probably not the most optimal. But you don't really need optimal to succeed in most GW2 content

if you wanna try something new in GW2 to do parallel to everything else; go to LA in the crafting station spot, find Grandmaster Craftsman Hobbs and from him buy Twilight Vol.1 and start your slow journey to a legendary from scratch. (Twilight is the greatsword that has a night’S sky in the blade).
That's exactly what I did 3 years ago when I started playing actively again. It was my first legendary after 9 years owning the game. >_> Now I have all trinkets, each armor class, runes and some weapons. Still so much stuff to do...
@@Kaltsukka my first was Meteorlogicus. Then i swore never to do it again… then i did it again… and now all my trinkets are legendary, i got 3 sets of armor and a bunch of weapons. Interestingly, Warframe and GW2 have some parallels in terms of how the progression in both games works; they are both pretty horizontal in that regard. 1. Both of them begin with a straightforward 'obvious' path where you mostly progress vertically in the first main chunk of playtime. 2. Once you get past that initial ramp though, both games widen out with tons of options on how you would like to progress your account. 3. Your biggest key 'unlocks/power ups' represent progression for your whole account (GW2 masteries and account bound stuff | Warframe mastery rank and using leveled-up mods across different gear). 4. Your raw 'make number go up' options essentially dry up, and you have to optimize within the games' options to do the hardest content. 5. While new options and content might introduce powercreep to some extent, it's always marginal. If you take a long break and come back, you'll still be able to use everything you had, and it will all still be relevant. There's a good reason these are two of my most played games. I absolutely love that they respect your time and make taking breaks feel healthy and normal. Also, given the depths you can delve into on Warframe's game mechanics, there's so much room for experimentation with builds that it's mind-boggling. GW2 has a lot of build diversity, but there's some general consensus on meta builds. With Warframe, however, there is much less consensus, and you really have to tailor your builds to what you want to use them for. If you have any interest in a 3rd person looter-shooter with some super cool story beats and really deep systems, I'd definitely recommend it. It's not something I'd recommend to everyone, but if you can get through GW2's initial hump, then I could see you getting past Warframe's and really liking it!
20:05 You said it best, they pigeon hole themselves to some expectation that they don't want it without experiencing it. After playing Throne and Liberty I wish they changed to swap weapon like guild wars 2. Not only from a logic perspective(swapping and using another weapon shouldn't be instant without swapping out a greatsword for example out of your hand) but I realized that setting 6 easy to reach buttons that you are used to, then swapping out and being able to use the same 6 buttons for the secondary weapon, is much better than having to bind 12 different keys, as I like to use those other keys for other keybinds.
I can't even understand why they did this high quality podcast with nearly ZERO understanding of the game. They often talk about some things as if they exist, but they don't. On the contrary, they claim that something does not exist, but it exists. It just sounds stupid. Sorry.
@@mcnudelchen2190 EVEN full casual player like RubeusCubeus made more accurate conclusions, and had a more correct understanding of WHAT this game is , WHY is like this, and what's the point and pros of some mechanics.
They did pose most of what they were saying as questions. You can't expect someone to be an expert on a topic they only have a vague interest in. I'd personally throw it all into the "to much trouble to deal with" basket if someone said that I sounded stupid just for trying to figure out how the game works. Which would give me a negative opinion on the community and the game as a whole.
@Barnuses guess you are a fan of those two, enjoy ^^ For me they don't feel like the kind of content i want to consume and, when you say "vague interest" it sounds like they don't even want to see gw2 as it's own thing. If you think the community gives a bad light because of the loud majority, maybe try it yourself. Go inside the game and ask a random player for help. Would be funny to me
@@mcnudelchen2190 You assume I'm a fan of them because I understand their perspective? I'm not on their PR staff or whatever so if you don't like them it doesn't matter to me. How does "vague interest" translate to denying a game its identity? They compare to other games because it's their point of reference. If I tried to describe Saints Row to someone I'd use GTA as a basis of my explanation, even though they have their own completely unique identities. (I'm assuming you meant loud minority) I'm saying people base their opinion on their experiences and if what they experience is negativity when showing interest in an established community it informs their opinion. It may not be the majority's opinion, but it demonstrates the type of feedback they can expect being public with their content on the subject. You shouldn't assume I don't play it just because I don't blindly exalt it.
Played in and out of GW2 but still never gets bored on everything, although downside of being in and out of it is that you forgot what your progress were. So, I make new character for a fresh start and to catch up with the mechanics again, so that I can regain the memory of what I've left doing before or from my other characters. It's fun
Same cooldowns if you double Staff ... but this IS a thing people do. It's for builds that only want to use one weapon type, but still want to proc runes or traits that require weapon swap. The 2nd weapon copy just becomes a means to an end.
I can understand the feeling of not wanting to swap weapons. Thankfully there are classes and builds that dont do that very often or at all. Elementalist and engineer for example can only have one weapon in combat and power revenant builds often only use one weapon for damage and occasionally one (staff) for utility like breaking defiance bars.
I personally enjoy their point of view, though 20hrs it not really enough to get a full understanding of the game. Also I am one of those story enjoyers, and gw2 does not have the best story with its own ups and downs but I enjoyed it overall.
Proudest moment was crafting a build myself and either setting a meta or wandered into an already existing meta, either way it got nerfed a few months later.
I know this will garner some hate towards myself. But dude, old school RuneScape is boring. Nothing about it is engaging except that "number go up" and that crafting and harvesting actually matters. I will give it points for being able to be played on a multitude of devices and old tech.
If youve never watched Garrett and Kyle of grinding gear, they take the games in bits and give their takes along the way. Dont judge them too harshly because they do games like soap operas and have only just dipped their toes into guild wars 2, their takes will evolve as they play, you all have been playing for years, give them room to breathe. [Its so wild hearing peoples takes on the new player experience then theyve forgotten what its like to have a new player experience. ]
I think this is the first time I've found Rubeous to be very upturned nose. I play almost every mmo and you're saying how you should play meta and the whole FFXIV is just WoW comment had me laughing. These guys give a honest opinion of the new player experience and you metacize it and pick it apart. It's kinda gross.
I care about the story of GW2....but I've been in the franchise since 2005 and have invested literal decades into playing the story. 😂 Tbh, it's complicated and lore keeps needing to be revised bc the past keeps getting retconned. If I was new I would care about the story of the campaign that I'm playing and nothing else. Any post-End of Dragon stories are honestly just epilogues and dev & old time fan wish fulfillment. Like, we'd been wanting to get into the Wizard's Tower since Guild Wars: Prophecies bonkers exploration quest "The Villainy of Galrath" and it's prominently featured in SoTO. The overarching story is incredibly interesting for many reasons...and none of those reasons have to do with your character. Just as Tyria's Ascendent Hero, Cantha's Weh no Su, and Elona's Sunspear General, the Commander will fade into history and people will only be talking about the great hero Lord Faren, he who is fashionable, feckless, and more than a tad foolish. 😂
4:42 well, if you have a bunch of xp boosters, killing neutral mobs, specially in Ascalon, is a good ways of getting xp. But this is more for people who are farming spirit shards i guess
it's like henry ford said, if you asked people what they wanted out of motorized vehicles they'd ask for a faster horse. people generally don't know what they want, and have to be forced into trying things before they will like it. that said, I'll never play osrs. because I've tried like 6 times and every time i do the mind worms' voices grow louder and i feel the passage of time, the name changes from "rune scape" to "run escape" in my mind and the only thing that can save me from going down the mental drain, is logging out.
Take a look at mightyteapot video raid run at 78 lvl. That shows you that building is too an incredibile thing in this game, that its how you play it that matters. This game is way more complex that it looks like
Brave of you to use the F-Word, man! People get angry when you say "FUN". Don't know why. But how dare I have fun! How dare YOU have fun! We're NOT HERE to have FUN! We're here to GRIND! And I got my Legendary Spear, and it's FUN! Still trying to get the hang of zipping about on a Griffon though.
Why are they asking what a world is? Did they remove the whole 'Choose your world.' thingy when you first log into the game? I even remember a friend asking about it a few months ago about it... I guess they might have started playing on some old accounts... I mean, they probably know what a world is at that point, but I think it is a bad example when it comes to confusing things in the game. Also, I agree about: 'the food doesn't get cold', but I gotta say that the taste might not be the same as it would've been if you ate it a few moments after they served it to you. The good thing is, that if you paid for it when they set it on the table, you won't be stopped in any way from eating it right away with the other guests...
they aint just mounts man. every single mount has a unique turn radius, jump height, acceleration, top speed, ect. the masteries also make them even more unique with there own abilities and skills. they aint just speed boosts, the change the way the game is played. also, as someone with the griffon, and going through SOTO, every mount is still usefull. bunny can still jump higher easier than skyscale, given there's land, skimmer is more maneuverable and can go underwater, while the skiff can go fast as fuck, has depth charges and you can park it and use it as a platform for fishing or whatever. the warclaw just gained a fuck ton of utility. the roller beetle is still fast as fuck boy. i dont chose my mount based on which one is cooler, i pick them based on which one i need in the moment. how many other MMOs use mounts like that
He's speaking as someone who hasn't hit the point in the game where different mounts take advantage of different circumstances which is of course cool. Sure the Skyscale has become the best all rounder but as you mentioned each had their own way of moving and will help you with differing tasks. GW2 mounts are seen as the best in the genre for a reason- they add gameplay. Referring to them as a vehicle is like comparing a Volvo to a Ferrari and saying 'well they'll probably get you to where you want to go so they're clearly the same'.
Regarding story, I've been playing for more than 10 years. Since the start of Living Story Season 1, and the story was never really that good. There's points where it's better, but in the end I don't play GW2 for the story at all and it's just context for areas to me.
Did not like there take on GW2, They already made up there minds before even playing the game. Some games are just not for everyone and that is okay you don't have to like every game. What you don't do is compare to other games you 1000's of hours and play a few hours in the new game and complain with out finishing all the content first then review.
Garrett and Kyle don't make up their mind until 100's of hours in. They're just tipping their toes in, give them air to breathe and don't judge them too harshly.
If you don't like it, just know that's how the beginning of the game appears to new people. Don't condemn them for their criticism just because you've been in it for so long that you can overlook the flaws. I think their opinions were pretty measured and thoughtful. They were mindful of what was opinion and expressed curiosity for some things they didn't understand. Of course some of their understanding is based on prior experiences, but that's how we all process new information until we gain greater understanding. It's a bit gatekeepy if you think someone needs 1000+ hours of experience in something to be allowed to form an opinion of it.
The META/DPS thing it's quite wrong, you can do tons of damage but if you fail mechanics in raid you are fucked, the same in WvW you can do tons of damage on one player but if you do not create multiple downed or if you do not finish multiple downed you are doing only useless high numbers so what's the meta? maybe meta it's just something useful if you don't know what to use and then you learn how to use the meta, or maybe you can change the meta or do something by yourself that fits your style, at the end of the day it's not about the build, it's about how you can use at best the build that you have, if it is tailored on your style sure it's better, it's all about the player, not about just the build and it's about experimenting, Sc do always that, they just try new ideas and new build, they do not use the meta, they create the meta on their style, they engage on an unknown territory, something that most people don't do, they just think about a "static" meta and use it because it's good enough for most of them.
The way I would describe those guys' video would be: Performative Ignorance. Like an ignorance that you play up for discussion and views. At the end of the day, GW2 is probably one of the simplest MMOs you'll encounter and much of it isn't required to "understand" to play. So part of me wants to just say "I can get you guys" and the other is like "why are we acting dumb, again?"
Played Gw2 since old Lions arch...I'll be the first to say I don't care about the story at all. Kinda lost interest after Heart of thorns expansion which I think Peaked the game. But I still log into it from time to time...
Idk if I’ve said this before, but the world of tyria is so damn cool but the story is delivered very poorly through the narrative the vast majority of the time. There’s some really cool story beats but it’s maybe like 5-10% of the narrative that’s executed well. Everything else that’s cool about the story of Tyria is done through environmental story telling in the world and in quests that admittedly I couldn’t care less about until like four years ago.
Let me remind you something pal; if the skyscale is a helicopter, the griffon is a fighter jet. Let that sink in

The issue with mounts... is you only understand the hype when you unlock them along with their masteries.
I still don't understand the turtle, but then again, I have not unlocked its masteries XD
I'd argue that you can only understand the hype if you spent years playing the base games without them.
@@ianashmore9910 the hype is not around the players that play gw2 since years, more about players comparing gw2 mounts with others like wow

@Barnuses guess you are a fan of those two, enjoy ^^
For me they don't feel like the kind of content i want to consume and, when you say "vague interest" it sounds like they don't even want to see gw2 as it's own thing.
(I'm assuming you meant loud minority)
I'm saying people base their opinion on their experiences and if what they experience is negativity when showing interest in an established community it informs their opinion.
41:05 I felt called out here whenever ♥Eir♥ is on screen lol
I personally enjoy their point of view, though 20hrs it not really enough to get a full understanding of the game. Also I am one of those story enjoyers, and gw2 does not have the best story with its own ups and downs but I enjoyed it overall.
14:34 adventure quest worlds????? MY MAN !!!!!!
"FUUUUUUUN!" - For me fr fr
Using the same weapon in both slots is a thing. It's usually used when one of your traits triggers on weapon swap.
he's beginning to believe
Proudest moment was crafting a build myself and either setting a meta or wandered into an already existing meta, either way it got nerfed a few months later.
Rubeus is just jealous because he has neither a fighterjet nor a helikopter
😠
I started playing 2 months ago.
Gw2 is a way of life.
it's like henry ford said, if you asked people what they wanted out of motorized vehicles they'd ask for a faster horse.
people generally don't know what they want, and have to be forced into trying things before they will like it.
that said, I'll never play osrs. because I've tried like 6 times and every time i do the mind worms' voices grow louder and i feel the passage of time, the name changes from "rune scape" to "run escape" in my mind and the only thing that can save me from going down the mental drain, is logging out.
Now you know how we felt when you were getting in to GW2 😁
You cannot permanently destroy an equipment in MapleStory, you can repair the equipment if that happens.
Will say dps gonna matter when you do instant raids, strikes and end game fractal. Aka end game pve dps and optimal gear and build gonna matter
We had a huge influx of FF/wow players a few months back. Its the main reason we have cat stuff now.
There is surely a bunch of people in native gw2 that apprechiate this developement xD
the real skyscale-griffon comparison is the skyscale is boring and sucky and the griffon rocks and goes nyoom
They are wrong with certain weapons unviable im a power untamed that uses lb or axe axe and hammer. Hammer is my top dps often hitting 30k dps.
Played Gw2 since old Lions arch...I'll be the first to say I don't care about the story at all. Kinda lost interest after Heart of thorns expansion which I think Peaked the game. But I still log into it from time to time...
warframe is fun :) reminds me alot of gw2 for some reason, dont ask me how hahaha
Idk if I’ve said this before, but the world of tyria is so damn cool but the story is delivered very poorly through the narrative the vast majority of the time. There’s some really cool story beats but it’s maybe like 5-10% of the narrative that’s executed well. Everything else that’s cool about the story of Tyria is done through environmental story telling in the world and in quests that admittedly I couldn’t care less about until like four years ago.
try to not pause the video to much :)
