    Good job! I think if you sew or glue some d rings on the tent inside, then when you are about to stow it, stretch some bungee cords across those d rings and it will pull the tent sides in while you close it up.

    Im in the process of uoldi g this type design to be the roof of my '91 Jeep wrangler. A main difference being that i wont have bottom. Only fold out slats so i kan enter from inside the jeep. Hella MadMax. I learned alot from watching this. Thank you sir.

      That's awesome! I would love to have made this a pop top for the montero, but I couldn't take cutting the roof haha. I'm glad the videos could help you out, good luck with your project!

    You should use the left over yards of canvas to cover a piece of foam. You can find different kinds of foam at like joanns or hobby lobby. But it would make a really nice mattress pad that suits the look of the Jeep tent you made. I may make me something like this after my rebuild is done!! Great tent!

    you can place an elastic rope, on the outside, from each end of the "hinge", in such a way that it makes the canvas slide inwards by itself :D

    Awesome build, maybe put a strap to hold tent material together when closing it. And use a mosquito net for windows and or door.

    when you close it, install some bungees around your canvas. Then the canvas will retract while closing the top (i saw that in other videos and seems to work well)

    Hey dude, I just thought of this.. Im trying to be the 1st person to do it but you can always add it.. Do a sky light in the top (upper clam) with plexi glass and weather stripping so when youre laying down you look up and see stars!

      There's a Facebook page called " diy roof top tent community" Check out some of those designs. I think I have seen a person do a skylight but I don't know if I ever saw the finished product. Good luck!

    Great build, and surprisingly light for all wood. @4:30, along with the longer bolts, I'd get nylon locking nuts.....just as a safety precaution

      i got longer bolts and used lock washers, it never got loose. But nylock nuts are a good idea! Thanks for watching!

      A bit of elbow grease when opening it and two pieces of metal tubing that you stick in the front to hold it up 😂

    make sure you use locknuts for the brackets so they dont come undone from vibration

      @@evansautomotive307 I sure will. I have been wanting to build a roof top tent, but not 100% sure what design just yet. I like yours. I have a 6 foot trailer I want to use though, so the fabric tent type might be more compact......not sure yet.

      @@MuskratOutdoors yeah the fold out ones are nice if you have a trailer, i just wanted to keep my center of gravity a little lower since the montero is tall and narrow. I have thought about building a little offroad teardrop style trailer also. But that would take a lot of planning for me, still on the radar though.

    put on the middle of tent, elastic strap, hooks rope, that make easy to close the lid, The strap take and hold the rent material when you will be close the lid

      Yeah i was going to do that, it just hasnt posed much of a problem for me to put it all in by hand. But thats definitely on the list.

    Awesome video! Hey random question, I wonder if u could snag a big tent on the cheap at Walmart or a garage sale and use that instead of the canvas so they u could somehow use the prebuilt windows and doors somehow…. Probably would require more seams to see but might be slick to have the zip up windows with screens etc.

      Yeah! that would work and its a good alternative to sewing in zippers and windows.It wont be a durable as this canvas, but theyre not really put through a lot of stress anyways.

    Stick some bubble wrap insolation on the lid ,it will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer

      @@evansautomotive307 best thing I ever did to my vw camper ,you will thank me m8 and do the floor ,had cold sleepless nights and in summer it was that hot it started to melt the carpet glue but after using the insolation that instantly stopped ;) great job by the way

      Its been pretty good, i left it on through the months of rain here in washington and it stayed dry. The gas struts do put a lot of strain on the frame and it has bent a little, but i am planning to fix that by screwing on some metal braces to the corners

      Thanks! I pretty much only put tuem on the outside for space. A 4x8 sheet of plywood isnt alot, so even 2inches makes a difference. A few big brands put them on the outside as well, gfc, i think roofnests too. Thanks for watching!

      Its just 600 denier waterproof canvas! It has a waterproof pvc layer. It has been totally dry! thanks for watching

      its about the same as other clamshell rtt's on the market. Like the roofnest and the smittybilt. 50 something inches of head room inside. Thanks for watching!

      Its 600 denier fabric I got it here. I ended up getting like 10 yards of it if i remember correctly. I have quite a bit left.

      They are 36 inches extended. i believe 15-16in stroke and 80lbs each.

      To be fair the expensive ones are made of aluminum which is the ideal material. But this sure does work! I think I might make an aluminum one in the future! Thanks for watching
