- In this video I find gold while prospecting in central Virginia using a gold pan.
I'm prospecting on one of the Central Virginia Gold Prospectors leases in the Farmville area. This is a scouting trip for upcoming videos of gold dredging in VA. I had a great day on the creek!!

I own Sylvan Prospect, not far from Farmville. There's flour gold throughout the area. The bigger pieces of gold here are not rounded in any shape or form, it's flat and shaped like the old time "Chicklets" chewing gum, little squares. The state geologist said it looks like broken pieces of "ribbon" gold. I lost a creek bank full of it during a hurricane, it washed away 10 feet of soil. I'm planning on going out to see if there's a better spot, when it warms up outside.
I have seen(not found personally) gold from this area that is definitely big and rounded and definitely have shape to them. It’s here but those big pieces are kept secret in most cases lol. It’s here but finding ground that hasn’t been pounded is the trick. Definitely looking for private properties to dredge on in the future!! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy!!
Hey man I own property out in Amherst been hoping to find gold in the creek but no luck yet, I do have arrowheads though. My uncle is a member of the gold prospecting group your in I think though, he's found nuggets the size of a penny before
Cool. I hunt in Amherst every year in the national forest. I’d say as far as gold in your creek it’s very doubtful that far outside the gold belt but it is possible to find some small small specks. Gold was found in Amherst county, old mines near Rocky Row Run, and on Buck mountain( west side of rt 60). Also on some of the tributaries to the James River. Alot of stuff in the county. I found an unknown amethyst site.
You taught me something new!! I had heard of a gold mine on the James in Amherst county right on the county line but I didn’t know it was also found west of route 60! That’s really cool! @@davidturcotte5677 hey I know that old amethyst site there was a guy who used to mine them by hand and make hearts and cut the gem for a local jewelry store, I think he stopped doing it a while back because part of it collapsed or something
@@Whelessry this is in Amherst Plantation, not known and recently found. Just lucky one day and kept going back until I found its source, interesting geology in the county.Thanks!

I’d like to buy a small place to prank around with someday. Are clams pretty expensive or can you just buy land with a creek on it? I have no clue how it works. Seems like something that would be fun to do on vacation and my dad would like that when he retires.
So in Virginia there aren’t claims. Property that you buy is yours to prospect on providing the creek is on your property and not the property line itself. In that case things could get a bit troublesome if you’re neighbor doesn’t like the fact your prospecting in the creek. I’m not sure how to tell you to navigate that case. But I’ve found most people are open to it once they see how and what is done. As long as you’re not making an absolute mess and leaving holes open and trashing the area. It’s a great hobby to get involved in, gets you outdoors and is great for the family! You can join the central Virginia gold prospectors club and get your feet wet and learn how to prospect from some great people. Very family oriented and it’s very affordable. $100 a year for your whole family and they have 5 properties as of now and are adding more this year. You can look them up at CVGP. John here, I'm new to prospecting where is all of this lead coming from.
Mainly all the lead we recover is from shotgun shells from people hunting over the years that has made its way into the creeks and it accumulates in pockets just like gold will do. Is there a similar GP group for southwest Virginia (Wytheville, etc.)?
Not that I’m aware of unfortunately. You can also look at the GPAA club it’s big but don’t know if there is anything very close to you.

Is there gold on the eastern shore?
It’s very doubtful to be honest. I don’t recall hearing of any being found there. Generally speaking in VA it’s found along or near the gold belt. You can google it to see the area it covers and see the trend.

It says 1849 gold pan 11” by Jobe prospecting. Hope this helps!
That pan had more than a quarter of a gram maybe a quarter troy ounce. Lol
