I've been using an Xperia since day one (the Z series on through the 1 VI) and also upgrade every year as my personal device. It has everything i want, from the audio jack to the expandable storage, to brilliant camera if one takes the time to frame it - and of course clean Android experience.
The problem is the phone is $1500 at launch more expensive than iPhone's Pro Max and Samsung's ultra, yet the software support is only 3 years, that's like Xiaomi $200 phone. It's not worth it.
It depends on what you need. There is nothing like cinema pro, no phone else can record in 21:9, you can use it as external monitor using HDMI, you don't need to buy a huge ssd because there is a sd card slot, HiRes audio capable, headphone jack with a great quality with a great digital/analog converter. HLS mode to bypass the battery when doing intense cpu work and many more enthusiast features. It is a phone only for enthusiasts. People who are not like that, will never understand this phone. Because they don't know and they don't care about all these features. But if you need them, only Xperia has them.
@@ジキシンwell then you get a true camera, my cheap Canon Rebel T6 takes better picture than that phone at like a third of the price. No matter how many “professional” features you throw on that phone it will never match up to a true camera. In fact most blind tests throw this phone in the bottom of the batch. At $1500 it was way overpriced especially for only a few years support. That’s a slap in the face for the customer. It’s near worthless when it comes time for resale or trade in
@@superiortoall22 Nobody is saying that a smartphone can replace a camera. Cameras are a complete different thing. But with the pro features on Xperia, you can complement your setup. Nobody who is making films or want to do real photography is using a smartphone. But it can be a good addition.
@@ジキシン Im sorry but at $1500 it’s still expensive to complement my setup. That’s why these phones struggle to sell even to professionals; most people buying this phones are just going for the headphone jack and SD card and have probably never touched a camera in their life.
I purchased this phone but sold it because it lacked customization options, and I disliked the Google Photos app. The absence of a double-tap-to-screen-off feature and the inability to customize the lock screen were also dealbreakers for me.
It's close to vanilla Android, isn't it? With a little bit of effort in the initial stages, maybe you can very nicely customize a lot of things. You didn't have to give up on the phone for it. There are plenty of Launchers out there that can help you with the double tap to screen off and screen on, as well as the lock screen. I'm using MiUI, and those guys are very far away from a vanilla Android, that's why I'm struggling to customize anything because all these apps just break. Xiaomi have modified so many aspects of the core Android experience, and these customisation apps become very buggy.
Never seen this device in person, but I much prefer the notchless, cutout-free front design. It just gives a much more uniform look, plus you get space for the notification LED, selfie camera & front facing speakers.
I tried the Xperia 1 V and just could not get on board paying £1300 for a phone whose screen I couldn’t see outside in winter, and was dimmer than my pixel 7a that cost £300. Just made me feel like it was a bad proposition and ended up returning it.
I had a Sony phone (I think it was the Xperia Z) a while back and it was one of my favourites but the software support, limited models and the crazy pricing these days is why it isn't an option for me any more.
I think a lot of people who are complaining about the software are overlooking one of the most important features of the Xperia - an unlockable bootloader. They're one of the 4(ish?) mainstream brands left that actually support custom roms
Not paying $1500 to do what the company should be doing. Customer roms were fine when phones were $400-500 and updates were sparse but in the 2020s it’s unacceptable at this price. It means that Sony is saving money by a. Not paying Google for license and b. Skimping on resources for producing updates. I’m not for helping these corporations save money.
0:14 “reliable” finger print reader is not actually that reliable, just google Xperia fingerprint reader issue. For Years Sony can not or rather don’t bother to solve this problem.
That phone is meant to be for content creator and photographer who want a manual camera like a real camera that's why sony doesn't put too much image processing like every flagship do this days
No photographer would pay $1500 for a phone when they already have an $4000-5000 camera. I know plenty of successful photographers and they don’t use this phone. It’s meant for professionals but the majority of people who bought it are those who think using it defines them as professionals.
@@gamingprofile5880 but why would a person spend another $1500 for that? Most will just end up buying an iPhone. Successful people don’t spend money on things that won’t help them
I'm using the Xperia 1 V1 now and its a brilliant phone and is equal to any top phone out now,i also still have this phone the mk 1V had it for two years and personally have had no trouble apart from the fingerprint sensor stopped working but found that no big deal as pin is nearly as fast, apart from a little overheating at the start which was cured with software updates i found it a great all round phone so I'll keep it as a second phone.
I have Xperia 1 II, and since my previous age-old phone has headphone jack, microsd card slot, I do not need to adjust myself. It was instant to use my media files right after setting it up since I only need to insert the card. I still get some sort of update, on google play system. And sony or google managed to update the apps, despite having android 12, so I can enjoy some a.i. features like the magic eraser.
I had a Sony Xperia XZ3 back in 2019. Had always wanted to try a Sony phone, and I really liked some of their design philosophy, so I even went out and bought the international version which had two extra gig of RAM. However, the software experience, despite being nearly stock Android, was never that great and I always seemed to have one issue or another. Ended up switching to a Pixel 5 about 18 months later and the software was just so much better sorted. Even though the Sony had fantastic hardware (for the time), the software experience on the Pixel just blew it out of the water, and I've stuck with the Pixel lineup ever since (went to the Pixel 7 Pro two years later, and just got a Pixel 9 Pro a couple of weeks ago).
Yeah, different strokes for different folks. I have never used that phone you mentioned from 5 going on 6 years ago but I know the feeling. I used a Pixe 6 & 7a and they were easily the worst phones I've ever had. They overheated every morning during my commute. They overheated at night even when it was raining; leaving me stranded in the wrong part of town, they had poor cellular modems so they'd also drop signal during navigation or a call when on certain parts of the highway which none of my other older phones did. It forced me to carry a back up phone from 2017 for whenever it decided to randomly screw up. It also had very middling performance, thanks to the bad Samsmsung fabricated soc. So, I get it.
I wished Sony made their phones less nerdy and I wished the speakers were more in the center and the same design and had traditional aspect ratio and their cheaper phone didn't feel cheap and more companion compact phone to go against the pixel 8 and the Samsung
I can agree with almost perfect. I miraculously found one on marketplace near me here in AUS, it definitely has flaws but I love it and cant see myself with anything else for a while.
I'm not too fond with the aspect ratio of the screen. But I love almost everything else about the Xperia. It's a shame that it's not widely available in my region, and it's very expensive for current generation models.
I have both the Xperia 1 III and 1IV. Both of the fingerprint sensor died. Battery life is meh to poor. Phone gets hot easily especially using the camera app. 1 IV was acting up at one point where it would constantly freeze and shut off even on standby/idle. It was already past its warranty so I couldn't send them in for RMA. I do like the features but all the issues that came with it broke me.
Sony phones are hard to recommend in general due to price when it was brand new, and the software update lifecycle lasting for 2-3 years worth of Android version upgrade. I'm fine with 3 years but opting for 4-5 years of software support lifecycle would be better (or even better, 7 years of software updates) for an otherwise a very capable mobile photography powerhouse. I would opt for Sony if I am switching from my Redmi Note 10 Pro because I am extremely picky on my feature requirements, especially having a headphone jack. Xperia 1 VI would be my go-to choice if I have money to pay for or I just wait for it showing up in the used market in a year or two for an even lower price.
I'm using the midrange version, the Xperia 10 IV and I'm so satisfied with the device. Although, I'm not strong camera user so that's not an issue to me
I'm such a big fan of sony. Ever since i want to have one. Last week i almost bought the 1 mark iii 2nd, but i chose a55. Because here in the Philippines we dont have sony service center here anymore. They don't sell their smartphones here anymore. That's why i couldn't risk it. Plus most sony's that are sold here are refurbished with low quality parts. But tbh I'd love to have one. Having sd card, notif led, headphone jack. Is a very win win to have for that price.
The fact that a 1800 dolar phone at launch phone has less than 2 years of software support and security patches just diminishes any features that this sony could have.
I've always loved Sony phones and was eagerly waiting for Ryan's video. I plan to buy a second-hand Xperia, but it's challenging to find them in India since Sony hasn't sold their phones here in a long time.
I owned the 1m4 and now the 1m5. I couldn't stand the overheating in the 1m4. But the cameras had little.processing and I actually liked that. The 1m5 is much better finished product but the odd time the video pro app would freeze. Overall, 1m5 is a keeper for me and no need to upgrade to 1m6. The headphone jack is great for using lav mics when recording or plugging it into my car and not having to fumble around with Bluetooth. May keep it until iphone 17...idk
I remember back in 2013 Sony was still in a competition with Samsung, and I was hyping their products when I got the Xperia Play. Just plain sad that they are not competing anymore.
So sad that Sony is still able to make amazing phones, but c'mon man, those retail prices at launch are really stupid. It just feels like they keep releasing phones that almost nobody will be able to buy. Love the Design, love the features (especially the headphone Jack and the Shutter Button), but Sony marketing strategies are their biggest flaw right now.
Sorry but its well worth the price. 1400 usd is fine for what the phone is. Phones with micro sd have to pay royalties, most other phones do not have a headphone jack, wxcellent manual cameras with real zoom are a rarity. Youre also paying for Sony's expertise and their name. If you want the quality youre going to have to put the money up.
@@orangeyellow-me1pz most people in the market have moved on to BT earphones/headphones and Sony has very lackluster software support compared to competition of the same price. If I'm paying that much, I would want my phone to have the longevity physically and software wise.
As someone who used an LG v20 for a goodly while and then a Surface Duo someone complaining about their phone giving them too many updates is hilarious. I was lucky to get security updates ever with lg. And Microsoft never even did consistent monthly security updates. I'd love to have a phone who's software suite was updating regularly.
While I do agree with you I believe the update notifications hes getting is a software bug. He has already applied the update but its still telling him to update. I think he explained that poorly.
I remember recommending an Xperia phone to my partner back in 2017 (I guess) due to me seeing nice reviews everywhere and to this day she remembers that as her worst phone ever. Never got to try one myself 😅
Xperia 10 VI which came out this year around £350, Sony's budget option; It comes with SD 6 gen 1. Quite a joke from Sony, but no option to have a new phone with a headphone jack after Zenfone's death.
The flaw is the massive price for a phone that is seemingly from 2019. The screen bezels and the dull design is what puts me off from this phone. I love it Sony phones and my last was the Xperia 1 iii. But asking me to pay the same price for essentially the same phone is ridiculous, especially considering you can get a better eco system, aftermarket support, etc from devices from Samsung or Oppo/Oneplus and those phones are modern. Sony should drop the price to well below the S24 Ultra and undercut Samsung. Only THEN will this phone from the past suddenly become attractive.
I finaly upgraded from the xz2 to 1ii and i love it.... not every time am pleased by the manual camera controls, i sometimes wish there was a better auto cam.... and i straight hate the cinema pro app... i downloaded video pro so it's all good
I have the same feeling with Sony phones as a long time user. I really want to love them but they're just too much hard work and unreliable compared to others.

You should have Android 13. I have the same phone with the 13 update. That is the last one that it will get even though so many owners have complained.
I'm probably not "your average smartphone user" as I have various phones each for dedicated occasions: Xperia 10 IV as a GPS on multi-day wilderness trips & Oppo Reno 10X Zoom as my dedicated point-and-shoot. I will upgrade from both of these some point in the next couple years and the Xperia 1 line is definitely on my radar.
It doesn't matter if they (Sony or any other company) produce the perfect phone with the perfect amount of updates, perfect marketing and also get the hype of the moment...., it takes perfect people to recognize that! The perfect phone doesn't exist and never wil be. We will always complain en look for better and different, we do have that moment when we think we have the perfect phone. After that we must learn to get along with imperfection, that's not so bad, because we are imperfect too.😘
Just recently a few phone makes are starting to offer more effective levels of software support. Motorola (for many years one of the worst) is suddenly offering really impressive update duration and speed. However WILL they continue to DELIVER? Updates are the reason I mostly used Samsung for years- despite some annoying issues: like slow charging rates and bloated firmware (with Samsung versions of so many perfectly good Google applications). What I'm looking for next is good cameras, especially at the longer end plus plenty of on board storage with long support.
Man I love Sony phones. Only one that doesn't seem to be an iPhone clone. They just do what they want. Now what I want is bigger sensor on zoom and ultrawide just so I can have nicer image quality on both. Otherwise, good phone overall.
Sony doesn't afford to provide better support for their smartphones because they sell too few of them. And the success of recent Pixels on the Japanese market seems to have hit them hard. Own a 5 II, good device with the same issues as the video points out.

It is good that Sony does little to nothing with marketing. It makes them special and justifies the pricing. As a music lover I like the headphone jack, much better quality when listening music. I use it quite a lot on my Asus ROG 6. It will probably go between OnePlus and Sony for my next smartphone. 🤘👊
Sony have literally spent the last 10 years ignoring mobile computational photography. That is why it has been unable to compete with any of the top tier android manufacturers on phone cameras. They are also a company riddled with beauacracy that stops them making any meaningful visual changes to their handsets and defining a design style to their phones that would create interest from the public. Not to mention a complete lack of advertising or awareness in most markets.

I just got the new Xperia 10 VI a week ago. It's not the high end model but I really like the form factor.
No good proprietary app, selfie cam mirrored, samsung can save as previewed
I did like this phone but it overheated in summer while taking photos. Needed more update support.
Far form that price in Canada, like 1000$ CAD, when you can get the better 1 VI for 1400$ CAD
Under £300 on Ebay? That don't sound right. It's listed on Amazon for $700-$900 used.
0:14 “reliable” finger print reader is not actually that reliable, just google Xperia fingerprint reader issue. For Years Sony can not or rather don’t bother to solve this problem.
Yeah, the fingerprint scanner on my Xperia 1 iv died after a year and a half, which seems to be the typical time after which they shit the bed.
Yeah true, i think Sony never fix this issue since Z5 in 2015
@@lukasegeling5205 mine was dead in two months on 5 ii
That phone is meant to be for content creator and photographer who want a manual camera like a real camera that's why sony doesn't put too much image processing like every flagship do this days
No photographer would pay $1500 for a phone when they already have an $4000-5000 camera. I know plenty of successful photographers and they don’t use this phone. It’s meant for professionals but the majority of people who bought it are those who think using it defines them as professionals.
@@superiortoall22If they can pay for $5000 camera not including the lenses, for sure they can pay for the phone
@@gamingprofile5880 but why would a person spend another $1500 for that? Most will just end up buying an iPhone. Successful people don’t spend money on things that won’t help them
If the processing in the camera wouldn't be so bad I would 100% buy this phone.
The only phone i would buy if they sell it in my country!
5:00 Well, the phone heared you out😂
I had a Sony Xperia XZ3 back in 2019.
I just wish they made them compact again... 😢
Sony phones hold a special place in my heart. I had an XZ Premium back in the day that I LOVED. No one does it quite like Sony (for better or worse).
Is a very win win to have for that price.
the software is lackluster
It is still very expensive even for a used phone here.
The fact that a 1800 dolar phone at launch phone has less than 2 years of software support and security patches just diminishes any features that this sony could have.
I think you're 200 usd too high but I agree.
The phone has no quad DAC...
I've always loved Sony phones and was eagerly waiting for Ryan's video. I plan to buy a second-hand Xperia, but it's challenging to find them in India since Sony hasn't sold their phones here in a long time.
Search on OLX, there's a whole plenty of sony in every model. I got 1 iv on olx and using it now.
I loved my one III. It was absolutely good. But pixel camera is pixel camera.
Making a video on this phone best decision
The flaw is the massive price for a phone that is seemingly from 2019. The screen bezels and the dull design is what puts me off from this phone. I love it Sony phones and my last was the Xperia 1 iii. But asking me to pay the same price for essentially the same phone is ridiculous, especially considering you can get a better eco system, aftermarket support, etc from devices from Samsung or Oppo/Oneplus and those phones are modern. Sony should drop the price to well below the S24 Ultra and undercut Samsung. Only THEN will this phone from the past suddenly become attractive.
Is the battery life okay? I was told the snapdragon chip of that gen was not energy efficient.
I finaly upgraded from the xz2 to 1ii and i love it.... not every time am pleased by the manual camera controls, i sometimes wish there was a better auto cam.... and i straight hate the cinema pro app... i downloaded video pro so it's all good
I always miss my Xperia X so much
If the latest phone in the series were available in the US, it would be the perfect phone for me.
it has a snapdragon 8 gen 1
I guess someone had the COURAGE to put in the headphone jack.
Sadly not enough courage to add 7 year software update

Because they stopped the notification light on the 1 V.
I'm probably not "your average smartphone user" as I have various phones each for dedicated occasions:
Xperia 10 IV as a GPS on multi-day wilderness trips & Oppo Reno 10X Zoom as my dedicated point-and-shoot.
I will upgrade from both of these some point in the next couple years and the Xperia 1 line is definitely on my radar.
i would def buy this if not for the screen aspect ratio. its just such a deal breaker for me D:
It doesn't matter if they (Sony or any other company) produce the perfect phone with the perfect amount of updates, perfect marketing and also get the hype of the moment...., it takes perfect people to recognize that! The perfect phone doesn't exist and never wil be. We will always complain en look for better and different, we do have that moment when we think we have the perfect phone. After that we must learn to get along with imperfection, that's not so bad, because we are imperfect too.😘
Omg bro I love your voice so much
this is my phone right now 😢 Xperia 1 vi
Just recently a few phone makes are starting to offer more effective levels of software support. Motorola (for many years one of the worst) is suddenly offering really impressive update duration and speed. However WILL they continue to DELIVER? Updates are the reason I mostly used Samsung for years- despite some annoying issues: like slow charging rates and bloated firmware (with Samsung versions of so many perfectly good Google applications). What I'm looking for next is good cameras, especially at the longer end plus plenty of on board storage with long support.
I swear Sony makes the best looking phones
Man I love Sony phones. Only one that doesn't seem to be an iPhone clone. They just do what they want. Now what I want is bigger sensor on zoom and ultrawide just so I can have nicer image quality on both. Otherwise, good phone overall.
Sony doesn't afford to provide better support for their smartphones because they sell too few of them. And the success of recent Pixels on the Japanese market seems to have hit them hard.
Own a 5 II, good device with the same issues as the video points out.
No overheating? Had the same model in 2022 when it released and overheated like crazy. You wanna sell it for me? I’m in London hahaha
if only Sony would actually bother updating their software, I would instantly switch. the only reason that I went with pixel 8a

These things are notorious for having green lines appear on the display in my country. To be fair most Samsungs do too

Sony is definitely worst in terms of quality.
Their camera optimisation is worst and it hardly get update on time.
Cinema pro is by far better than video pro. I never use video pro on my 1V.
Been wanting to get one since forever. Sony just doesn't sell this in India :/
Sony is very expensive that's why it's not popular and has way less support
I stopped watching the moment you said that a screen that meets actual 4K standards isn't 4K.
