I actually wanted the rtx 3070 32 gb ram model but after waiting for over 2 months, my patience ran out. So i just bought the 3080 16 gb. Depending on where you live, the availability of legion 7 models will differ. I suggest if you can, just order the laptop at any big retailer and wait for sometime. Great review! I thought about getting ASUS Strix but the huge turn off was the colour gamut that it offered. The laptop was almost perfect until I find out that the colour gamut was only 62.5% unless you pay an extra MYR2k+ ($480 ish) and it was just totally not worth it. I plan to use it for graphics + 3D work and colours are the top of my priority here. I'm eyeing on the Legion 5 Pro rn and the specs I'm looking at is only around $1270 (for the 3060) and $1450 ish (for the 3070 config) which I'm more satisfied about with the price imo

That's why Lenovo performs so much better in games here. It should perform better due to the increased W limit, but marginally. USB-C external display will get you the extra.

    Thank you for checking Linux!
The previous generation Legion 7i (mine is i7 10875h, 2080 Super) has issues with sound and Linux as well. Lenovo seems entirely uninterested in fixing this and it's already been reported that this new model has the same issue. It's very frustrating as I want a powerful, (mostly) professional looking laptop that can also game when the mood strikes me. I'm in Linux at least 93% of the time.
I understand that this isn't a Linux supported laptop, but there's nothing stopping them from releasing drivers or providing documentation so someone else can address this. I've been using Linux since the 90's and otherwise I don't need any other support. Everything else works great under Linux including g-sync when optimus is disabled.
I would have returned this laptop in the 30 day window had I known this would be an ongoing issue (I bought mine in August of 2020).
Unfortunately, one of my hinges broke a few days ago. This seems to be a common problem with the older Legion 7 and sounds like it's probably fixed with the newest models. Just waiting for ultimate support to get the parts and come to my house to repair my laptop on the spot.
Maybe I can have the tech disconnect the annoying LED on the Legion logo on the back of the lid (seen in this video). It pulses while the laptop is asleep and can annoy me when I'm trying to sleep. Or I could just put electrical tape on it. :p

Hey Jarrod, got a quick question.
Is it time I need to upgrade my laptop? The only games I play is overwatch on high/ultra settings and programs such as SPSS and MS Project and millions of chrome tabs and MS Word for never ending essays and reports.
Current set up: Acer nitro 5 (2019 I think)
    Intel i7
16gb ram (ram is upgradeable to 32gb if I decide to download more)
    500gb SSD primary
    1TB SSD secondary (installed myself)
    GTX 1660Ti
The fans are getting quick "noisey" at times and temps reach around 50 -60 degrees delicious, even when I'm just writing out essays with 10+ chrome tabs,. When gaming overwatch, my temperature maxes around 80 - 83 degree Celsius, when weather is room temp. I changed the thermal paste about a year ago and I even under volted, which I found the most useful as before I was sitting around 83-90 degrees celcius. I know I've only had the laptop for roughly 2 years but for me I find those temperatures quite high for such tasks and application

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  3 года назад

Generally it's time to upgrade if what you're using isn't getting you by anymore. That said those specs should still handle those tasks no problem, so probably no need on upgrading. Those temperatures are quite low when under load and not worth worrying about.

Both laptops are neck and neck in terms of performance (difference of 1 to 2 fps) when you bypass optimus on the scar 15 by connecting it to a external monitor...that is interesting considering the legion has a 150 watt 3080 🤔...but the Scar 15 still held its own against it even with a 130w 3080...i didn't expect that kind of a performance boost by disabling optimus on the scar 15...so basically bypassing optimus is the key...asus should have just added a mux switch on the scar 15

I guess 130W is the limit when either the CPU becomes the bottleneck or the games are simply run in too low resolution. It would probably be a different picture running in 2K or 4K.

this may be unrelated, but I CANNoT WAIT FOR THE LEGION 7 PRO to be released in the states (also good luck getting one). It was a miracle to find a local shop had the 2021 Scar 17 (Ryzen 9 , 3080, 32gb, 2TB) in stock. They have it for $2999 and i reserved one. Im going to pick it up today. But if the Legion 7 pro drops in USA the next two weeks: i will be returning the scar if i get a chance to obtain the legion.
Also for anyone looking at the price tags or on the fence about building a desktop, its going to cost roughly the same, only THESE THINGS ARE PORTABLE.
This is my perspective as a content creator who works with CAD/rendering/animation, video/photo editing, with multiple programs running (including chrome 😂).. that being said the legion 7 and scar 17 are absolutely STACKED for designers / content creators. Another point I'd like to make:
Before deciding on a 3080, i was only looking at the 3070 laptops because price range. Then i realized some of my work is far more intense then video games, not to mention the 3070 is only 8gb vram and The mobile 3080 is offered in 8gb or 16gb VRAM. IMO youd be a fool not to pay the extra coin for the 16gb. sure the prices will drop..next year. Normally most other brands (Alienware for example) will try to sell something like this for 4000-5000+ usd... So if you're a gamer then maybe I would suggest building a desktop or buying some older tech as the prices drop.
As for the scar 17, im not gonna pinch overinflated pennies. I know it will be enough power for my applications, the only gaming i do is emulators. Im not concerned about the MUX or FPS because i heard there is some sort of manual mode. The HDMI issue and SD slot is kinda annoying but not a dealbreaker. Also i never used the webcam on my 8 year old IdeaPad but im a tiny bit bummed it doesn't have one. The legion 7 pro and scar 17 are the only options if you want to support AMD + 3080 with 32gb+ RAM and you need the numerical keypad

I got stuck between these two devices... cant decide which to buy...
There is something I want to mention. Metal body has this feature. It emits heat and eventually laptop gets cooler faster. but if your hands on it they burn as a result. but if you are going to use an external keyboards that wont be an issue and metal body wins.
But plastic body traps heat inside so your hands will feel less of heat. if you are going to play games w/o a ext. keyboard, asus is better and also it has a cool mech. keyboard.

I can’t find any good tutorial on what things to do first when I open it.
    1. Are we making system image?

    3. Is anti-virus needed? Because on store it says that windows defender can do the job. But if it’s still needed, what can you recommend?
    4. Empire points?
    5. How can you prolong the battery life of legion? Can I full charge the laptop after use or even if not?
    6. What software or apps you would recommend I should install?
