The process by which the lid was protected is called "Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO)," also known as micro-arc oxidation (MAO). This is a type of anodizing of aluminum, but using a very high voltage. With this voltage, sparks with a lifetime of a fraction of a second, which can have a temperature of more than 3000K, are created on the surface of the metal. These sparks create plasma and melt the created oxide layer to form a ceramic coating. These layers are highly porous, which is why a characteristic texture can be observed on the lid.

It means that they spray ceramic dust at very high temperatures on the aluminium's surface and probably have some sort of protective coating to form the bare lines and remove that after the spray job ended -sounds cool, maybe is cool to have but it is actually not as expensive of a process as you might think its basically a paintjob but the paint is dust and its very hot.

Would be great to test how much bnattery power is daily lost after full shutdown (so not when in sleep). I have last year Vivobook 14 OLED Asus laptop discharging when completely off by 8% per day, and seems like it's not uncommon with new models, not only from Asus.
I have the Best Buy exclusive lower spec Intel version. i5-1240p/8GB/256GB/1800p 90hz OLED for 750 USD last April. Really enjoy it but I had to return it under warranty for firmware issues twice. Otherwise solid and snappy, but it can run hot.
just bought the 2022model for $860 last week, and I think the S13 is a great product. 2023 new model looks nice with some improvements, but AMD 6800U in the old one seems better?
I freaking love the cover design and the thinness. 16:10, WiFi 6E, HDMI 2.1, OLED, and the Xe graphics are actually somewhat usable? If my next laptop isn't a Framework it'll be an Asus...
Bought a Zenbook 13 convertible a few years back for my wife. It was fanless, and superthin. It looked great, and worked great, until the hinges seized a little more than a year later, not too long after warranty expired. Needless to say, it was not worth repairing it (especially considering that the original parts didn't last very long). No, we didn't even abuse the hinges by using it as a tablet. Ended up selling it at a steep loss. Very disappointed at Asus. The HP Spectre x360 that I bought for myself at the same time as the Zenbook still works great these many years later.
Should take a look at the Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 14". It's quite similar in terms of performance but I think the price is quite low despite similarly high build quality. Great ports, too, and the same i7-1355U.
I think they could have added 1-2mm for a tad more battery, quieter fans, more key travel, maybe a trackpad with actuators like the macbook air and better cooling.
This is so tempting as a student the lightweightness is awesome. Did a bit a research though and the GPU is not high performing, please correct me if i'm wrong
10:33 1200p is not 1080p, doesn't matter if it's 16:9 or 16;10. 1200p is 1200p, and 1080p is 1080p. Just like 1280x720 and 960x720 are both 720p regardless of aspect ratio
I know what you mean, but there isn't a standard called '1200p', so it's not a thing people say. A resolution of 1920x1200 is technically 'WUXGA', but nobody bothers calling it that, either. The only standards ending in 'p' are 720p and 1080p - not to describe the actual pixel resolution, but to describe the bandwidth requirements, 'p' being twice that of 'i', and 1080 being roughly twice that of 720. Even an extra-wide movie (like Ben Hur) encoded at 1920x720 would still be called 1080p instead of 720p, because it needs hardware capable of at least 1080p for proper playback. So anything that's 1920x1200 can still be considered 1080p, because it meets/exceeds the 1080p standard, but it doesn't meet any standards above it, like 2k or WQHD.
@Alex McLeod I absolutely refuse to call 1920x720 "1080p" because that's stupid, the whole reason we even use resolutions is to describe how clear an image looks to our eyes. I don't care about the "hardware capability requirements", I care about how it looks to my eyes. 1920x720 still has exactly the same visual clarity to my eyes as 1280x720, it's just wide. If you upload a 960x720 video to RUclips, it'll still have 720p as a quality option because that's exactly what it is, just 4:3. And yes I know the difference between "p" and "i", but the only time "i" is used is for cable TV and old game consoles
@@RotcodFox Are you thinking this through? On a 1080p screen, 1280x720 content would be stretched 50% vertically and 50% horizontally to fill the screen, making it less than half as sharp. The 1920x720 content would be shown 1:1, in full clarity but with black bars. Same with any other aspect ratio, like 1920x803 (2.39:1), or 1920x1038 (1.85:1). We prefer black bars to blurry stretching, right? But no-one cares about the height of those black bars, because movies come in so many different aspect ratios. They still have to make content 1920 pixels wide to match our screens that are 1920 pixels wide. So it's just a quirk of tech industry naming conventions that 1080p is the name for anything 1920 pixels wide. Anything that actually counted the rows (like 803p, as above, or 1200p, like you suggested) would be more confusing for consumers. At least newer resolutions like 4k & 8k are counting pixels horizontally. If you want to change else's everyone's mind and make them count the rows instead of the columns (for standards that are already outdated, at that), maybe make a convincing video about it? Don't forget to shoot it in portrait mode for maximum quality!
plasma-assisted polishing of aluminum nitride ceramic is what asus meant to explain. It's a rough process and I don't know why they did this other than the fact that it feels amazing. But other than that there is no huge benefits. No downsides either though. Love the zenbook line of laptops but I couldn't get the last gen laptops, it almost seemed like they never existed. But at this point I just use my steam deck to do everything with. like honestly I don't need a laptop anymore. But this seems like if I was to get a laptop this would be it. I love slim laptops with long battery life with decent power. Just seems like the ideal situation. Like my dream laptop last year was a 6800h with an rtx 305 I don't game much but it's good to have it when the situations arises. And then obviously 2 m.2 ports and no soldered ram would have been nice. But I don't think I ever saw a laptop like that.
I still remember the day I foolishly bought a "slim" Asus ROG gaming laptop with thermal exhaust that directs heat straight to the monitor and your lap (I actually got blisters for being lazy to get it off my lap), good to see they improved so much since
Ceramic is something that is made out of clay, earthen elements, powders, and water. So, that cannot be ceramic. I googled PEO, and it is in essence just an aluminium oxidation process, induced and sped up by low voltage applied while Al is submerged in an electrolyte. Also, it is not 10.9mm thin. It has very high feet. If you put in your laptop bag, it will not take less space than other thicker laptops. It is light though.
First Windows laptop in many years that I actually have some craving for, seems like a very well rounded device. But won't ditch my MBP 14" even for this I think...
Appreciate the cantilever lid design creating air flow but does that make it uncomfortable for laptop sitting? Presumably this ultraportable is meant to be used in mobile environments where there might not be a desk.
No battery life estimates? my problem with windows laptop is that they are nowhere near the battery life of a macbook, even the air. At 1399 you can buy a Macbook Air M2 and still have have a think laptop with insane battery life. I wish windows will catch up on longevity.

ya the 6800u model from last year was amazing, the 680m igpu was great. I wonder how 7000 gen igpu is. after seeing how power efficient the 6800u was compared to intel, definitely leaning towards amd for laptops for right now.
I ordered this today but with the ryzen 7840u which should offer significantly better performance than the Intel options. Although i didnt buy it for gaming im curious how it will hold up in that task
Ceramics are just metal oxides with certain properties, as is anodized aluminium (Al2O3). I guess that ASUS treated the surface with a laser in order to get the Al2O3 to transition to another modification (crystal structure - this has a great impact on mechanical properties). Either that, or they wanted to come up with some marketing chargon for "those fashionable line patterns are made via laser ablation".
9:30 For speakers, I've found HP speakers (B&O with soundcard kind) really good. Tried many models from Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP and MacBook Air/Pro 13 in store and they were probably the best out of them.
My 2022 Zenbook 14X does a weird thing with its speakers: at about 60% it's practically at max volume. (it's so loud, that the 50 volume steps that windows gives you are very coarse if you just want a little bit of volume 😅) After this it starts boosting some frequencies and perhaps cranks the loudness up (applying massive audio compression and then gaining it back up) in order to appear louder. But quality-wise you're maxed-out at about 60%. This needs to be taken in account when testing laptop speakers (and phones, too, I'd guess). If you just crank it to 100% your find it sounding crappy, but loud. But it can actually be pretty okay and still loud. You just don't get that sound at 100%. This is what I'd love to see LTT doing better in the future.

Mine was a r7 5800H
Can you guys do a piece on "Headless Laptops"? I think they're a VERY lucrative option for budget gamers.
about computers without built screen?
@@DominikJaniec expensive laptops are sold for cheap when their screen is broken, yet they're still perfectly usable as desktops.
Its a cheap way to get a computer to pair with decent peripherals. Ideal for office tasks, watching videos etc. You would be lucky to get anything good for gaming for much less than a second hand desktop but you can certainly play older games.
It's definitely a well-engineered laptop. Would've wished on an AMD Ryzen-U option.
I Do have a Zenbook 14 with AMD CPU (ryzen7 4700U pair with the GForceMX350 2gb) and I cant conplain about the performance. Only downside I Found was the fan was exhaust on the screen wich not the best senario
Yeah, it's Intel. That means this is a desktop because I'll be plugged for majority of the time lol.

Such a great device i use it for web development and watching movies and some light gaming too the most thing that i love about this device is the screen and also the battery besides it was a gift from my father after i graduated high school and the thing that bother me is the heat when i charge it and use it that's it a very elegant device .
Some of the best racket I've ever heard. Good stuff
ASUS has been killing it for quite a while now.
Can't wait to see you guys try out the new 3D Oled Screens.
What are those?
The only criticism I have for this great laptop for an average home user is that its screen is not an anti-glare one. Nonetheless, it's in my shopping cart and I may proceed to checkout... Tempting. Very much so. I also need to see how it compares with the 13" Dell XPS - I just do not remember whether the Dell has a better screen or not.
What do you guys think about this new laptop from ASUS? Let us know below!

what are those lid toucan tabs torquing about.. lulz.
it's not real HDMI 2.1 48Gbps - it's the fake one that is rebranded 2.0 and doesn't do above 4K60 with no HDR

All of my smartphones that had OLED suffered a burn in. I like the colours on the laptop but having OS UI elements burned in would drive me mad.
I love how Alex measures how good the graphics on a laptop is by the presence of grass in Valheim
A leaf falls in a forest. Alex "Absolutely love to see it"
This laptop does everything right. It proves that IO is not a limiting factor when making a thin and light. They chose all of the right ports for the user who would buy one of these and that is all I could ask for. Could you plz cover the e-gpu case if it has Thunderbolt or USB4? This is a valid use-case for such a laptop and it's quite annoying that nobody covers it. I think the whole e-gpu idea is not taking off not because it has no value, but because nobody is just covering that use-case in the reviews.
“Nifty”, “chummy”, “rippin’ around”
sometimes you want it thicc, and powerful
Someone tell Alex that in valheim you can add "-console" to the launch arguments of valheim to enable dev commands, then you can press F5 and type "devcommands" to enable cheats. Commands like "tod 0.5" will set the time to noon so you can actually record during the day :) "fly" and "god" are also commands!
The RACKET test was very good, i think you should include that on all your tests 🌝
Bought this, love it
after all these years still loveing seeing the fallout guy
9:44 Speakers are probably a lot better if not listening at 100%. That way the DSP can do its job. MacBooks can go much much lower with bassresponse when you are below 50% as well
Would be great to test how much bnattery power is daily lost after full shutdown (so not when in sleep). I have last year Vivobook 14 OLED Asus laptop discharging when completely off by 8% per day, and seems like it's not uncommon with new models, not only from Asus.
did he even talk about battery life at all? I might miss it but it is an important thing to left out, isn't it?
i thought Alex said eleventy-five screws (instead of 11 t5 screws). MOre Alex vids! I'm loving this week on LTT.
i literally opened task manager on my laptop when i heard some fan noise, turns out it was from the video haha
But what about the 14 OLED? That one has a better display.... An you consider reviewing that? Thanks
That UX3402 Zenbook 14 is probably one of the best laptops I've ever used. I'm not surprised the 13 is good.
@@Vortexcube 13 also gets hot which is something I noted when comparing to a Mac M1. What firmware issues did you see?
13 is a little small for my work, the 15 inch also looks promising if the price is reasonable. Asus makes good stuff.
Thank you Alex 'Fantastic' Clark for this fantastic video 👍
Can’t wait to see the Zenbook 14X OLED
Some companies refer to the (essentially Sapphire) as "ceramic". So it's likely just an oxidized state. Either way, nice looking surface finish.
just bought the 2022model for $860 last week, and I think the S13 is a great product. 2023 new model looks nice with some improvements, but AMD 6800U in the old one seems better?
How is the battery life and the fan noise? If these two can keep up with the M1 MBP, I'm very much interested to buy it.
I freaking love the cover design and the thinness. 16:10, WiFi 6E, HDMI 2.1, OLED, and the Xe graphics are actually somewhat usable? If my next laptop isn't a Framework it'll be an Asus...
Just checked the US links out of curiosity, and it's already sold out on Amazon and Best Buy lmao
Did a bit a research though and the GPU is not high performing, please correct me if i'm wrong
i heard eleventy five screws later and I giggled before I realized it was "eleven t-5"... anyone else? no? ok I'll see myself out ... 😂
Your video quality is really good bro, and background to

I still remember the day I foolishly bought a "slim" Asus ROG gaming laptop with thermal exhaust that directs heat straight to the monitor and your lap (I actually got blisters for being lazy to get it off my lap), good to see they improved so much since
Cool Vieeo, thanks! Question regarding windows security: is it as save as apple's macos nowadays ??
I didnt want to wait in this. I have purchased a lenovo yoga 7 14inch OLED with the r7 6800U and i freaking love it.
Asus always pushing the industry. Love you Asus, my favorite brand.
Windows modern standby awaiting
damn asus sponsoring everyone and their moms for this laptop
Appreciate the cantilever lid design creating air flow but does that make it uncomfortable for laptop sitting? Presumably this ultraportable is meant to be used in mobile environments where there might not be a desk.
Still rocking my Zenbook from 2016
It's one of my dream laptops. Hope it's good for learning programming.. and a bit of Video Editing
Not into gaming that much these days..
Watching this on my Asus ZenBook 13 from 2018 or 19. I'll upgrade to this.
Wait. Maybe. Ahh. I'll think about it.
No battery life estimates? my problem with windows laptop is that they are nowhere near the battery life of a macbook, even the air. At 1399 you can buy a Macbook Air M2 and still have have a think laptop with insane battery life. I wish windows will catch up on longevity.
Raise your hand if you've been watching ShortCircuit for a long time🤚

Does it have a haptic touchpad like Apple's?
Hey when you are going to do laptop coverage in the future, could you plz cover the e-gpu case if it has Thunderbolt or USB4? Plasma Ceramic Aluminum is basically metal powder coating using plasma
Would like to see a comparison between this laptop and the new samsung galaxy book ultra. Which one do you think is better?
oh i remember seeing that manatee too a few weeks ago, it was there to spread awareness about the world manatee day if i remember correctly
Amazing video review showing all the ASUS stuff that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Also I thought the "computer generated pringle" was funny lmao
Anyone else not enjoying the "flippy-uppy" design 2:15?
.. can you change the battery in it? or does it blow up like a pillow a spicy pillow in few years?
you didn't mention the machine gets really really hot and the fan is really loud
"Can you guys make a racket?"
*Guys racket loudly*
That was way funnier than it had any right to be 💀
If it came with a 7940HS it would have gotten a 780m gpu integrated. That would have been a better choice
I love watching Alex review laptops, makes me want to buy one everytime, even if I don't need a new one! 🤣

Imagine this with a 7000 AMD cpu... it would be sick
ya the 6800u model from last year was amazing, the 680m igpu was great. I wonder how 7000 gen igpu is. after seeing how power efficient the 6800u was compared to intel, definitely leaning towards amd for laptops for right now.

This black keyboard look with the silver looks like a nice touch taken from 🍎
what is the battery life?? How is this point not in the review when it's such an important aspect of a laptop?
(it's so loud, that the 50 volume steps that windows gives you are very coarse if you just want a little bit of volume 😅)
After this it starts boosting some frequencies and perhaps cranks the loudness up (applying massive audio compression and then gaining it back up) in order to appear louder.
@@Hiasibua This is also what I'd like to see laptop manufacturers doing better in the future because that feature doesn't sound very desirable at all.
How many external monitors do it support? & How would you connected 2 maybe 3 external monitors?
"fully recyclable"...i dont believe that for a second.😂😂😂
Why would oled hurt your battery life, shouldn't it be more efficient than LCD?
