Very thorough video. You hit every point that is important with blackfishing. One tip that seems to work being a jetty jock, put a 30' top shot of 30LB mono leader. If you encounter a snag and break off, just re-tie a loop for your sinker and a dropper loop for your hook (just get really good at tying knots on the fly) - you will need to use a heavier sinker if using a 30' topshot of 30LB test mono as it creates alot of drag in the water. I carry alot of hooks and 4 and 5 oz sinkers.
Thank you for the tip! Thats a very good point, makes having to tie a bunch of rigs the night before less of an issue when you can use the same leader!
So helpful! This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen and already so much more helpful and informative than a lot of the RUclips fishing videos I’ve seen. I’m new to saltwater so showing from start to finish what to do is awesome and I appreciate you showing how to tie the knots too. Only place around my location with similar jetty’s would be cape cod canal I think. Might be heading down there for some Tautog!! Thanks man - Matt from Boston
Saltwater fishing can be pretty overwhelming at first for sure, so I’m glad you were able to learn some stuff from this! Thanks very much, Matt appreciate the kind comment! Best of luck out there at the Canal and tight lines.
Thank you, I really appreciate the comment and I’m glad you got some value from it! Nope they’re all over on either side and all the way down past the light house!
Went out to the jetty at Barnegat on 10/26... got there about 2 hours before high tide... wound up catching 3 keepers and about 18 shorts over the course of 3 hours... I was casting further out into the inlet and bringing it back towards the rocks (jig with crabs)...
Great informative video. I've been slowly getting back into fishing since coming back to Jersey from the Navy. I've been trying to catch my first tog with little to no knowledge of what to feel for. I really appreciate the video and will try to get on a tog with your tips. Thanks
Awesome video Sam. This was an amazing how to vid. Everything about is was great. Perfect timing with the tog chowder recipe. It looked delicious. It’s just about feeling like soup weather out there 😂.
Thanks for posting another video. Saw you in the audience at the surf fishing seminar on Saturday. I was there with my son and niece. I would’ve said hello but we had to bolt immediately after not winning any door prizes or the 50-50. We caught tog off the inlet rocks that afternoon.
Nice, hope you were able to pick up some tips and tricks from the seminar, sorry no luck on the 50-50, but I feel you on that haha! Glad to hear you were catching tog too.
@@SaltySamFishing on Sunday I was fishing a kingfish rig with sand fleas next to a jetty on the south end of the island and was surprised to catch a few nice tog instead
@@mistercarpenter5895 that’s awesome!! I’ve never actually even tried that on the south end but very cool to hear you were getting them on a kingfish rig.
At this point in the season it’s sort of on the down slope of activity through the end of the year. You can still catch them into December, but I’d say around low 50 degrees it really slows. Some fish will stick around though it just requires more work to get them. So, if there are some December days when you feel like fishing, always worth giving it a shot!
I fish mostly fluke during the summer and stripers during the fall, both beaches and jetties. I've never tried for tautog but would like to. What are your favorite times of the year to fish for them, and do you think the MC county jetties would be good?
Great Video! Always love all the info you provide. Do tog only hang around jetties, or can you have a chance to catch them near any bulkhead or structure?
This is a great question! Really the easiest way to get on them is at the jetties. However, they can also be found around docks and bridge pilings. If there’s structure around either a bulkhead, dock, or bridge then they can likely be found there (kayak access can make reaching those structures I’ve mentioned easier). Hope that helps.
I was fishing for tog for the first time today down in point pleasant and got skunked me and my son wemt through nearly 2 dozen crabs but those tog are unbelievable bait thieves lol Great video with lots of great tips im hoping i can put them to good use the next time we are out Fyi i just hit the following button
Tog are super tricky, but don’t be discouraged, once you hook into one it’s so much fun! Thanks for watching, glad you learned some tips and hope they help when you’re out next! Thank you for following along.
@@SaltySamFishing thanks for the reply and the tips I moved to the us 5 years ago from the uk I used to fish at home but mainly freshwater but since I've been here I switched it up to the saltwater mainly targeting stripers, fluke and blues but done tuna aswell.there is a way better fishery than anything I've experienced in Europe and I've been around most of it what we catch and eat at home is mainly mackerel and i use that for bait here lol
Glad you found it informational! Hopefully not about the poaching though. I hope all viewers are following regulations and possession limits. It’s always disappointing to hear stories of poaching, but I’ve also heard fish and wildlife has been cracking down more recently so hopefully that can improve things.
To be honest with you, not that much. The fish really just prefer the natural presentation of the bait. Some people may prefer the fluorescent jigs to attract the fish or the more natural green color jigs to make the presentation again look more natural. I haven’t found any color to be particularly better over another and often just use plain jigs without paint. Experiment with some and see what you think!
i think these fishing regulations are so stupid, its so hard to keep a fish, they make it almost impossible for in shore fishing, you cant keep a 14 inches black fish, but you can buy as many as you want at the fish market, i feel a lot of people feel the same way
Yeah regulations are definitely contentious across the board. I attended the fluke open meeting this year and I plan on attending more open meetings regarding regulations to learn more about it in the future. I know there’s a constant battle between recreational and commercial fishing which affects regulations in regard to conservation. It is tough to get that keeper size fish inshore sometimes though, I agree!
The school of fish! Lol! Very informative! Great video!

Looks like a good recipe for when the weather cools off just a little bit more
Absolutely, the nights and early mornings are getting colder so it’s almost that time!

Can we fish with the Caroline rig?
Yes you absolutely can! Carolina rig is another good rig for tog fishing. Thanks for watching and supporting!

With colder weather approaching, what is the minimum water temperature for Tog activity and beyond which that shuts down their activity?

Nice video. I recently learned a tog can be ‘peeled’ like a mahi mahi. I prefer to cook fish whole and it’s practically impossible to scale a tog.

Where you buy sand flea?
I”ll go coming monday barnegat!!!
Fisherman’s Headquarters! It’s the first shop when you get on the island in ship bottom.
What rod you use
Tsunami Airwave 8’ MH for rigs
Fish Heads Inshore 7’ M for jigs
now twice the amount of shorts are gonna get poached. Great vid, very informational.

All so the illegal anglers can keep them all
If anything the length regulation should be increased its way to easy to catch a keeper taug compared to literally any other fish from land
@Paperwaiting on a boat i catch hundreds of them, now try catching a 15" on shore
nothing wrong with being lazy! more fish for you!
