The best intro to tag fishing I have seen. I appreciated how you covered it all. From tackle to bait. Your explaination and demo of tieing was excellant. As a newbe to this I really learned a lot. I will be fishing mostly ocean. The biggest question is how much weight you use & of course that is a constant change. Please keep up the great video's your producing. You do an excellant job. Thank you.
My first thought was that I didn't want to watch a 14 minute clip, but I'm glad I did. This was very informative, easy listening and everything this guy says and shows makes sense. I haven't bottom fished for many years, I'm semi retired and want to fish and run my boat every chance I get. I'll have a second rod & reel rigged for blacks in a couple days and can't wait to get out from Halloween YC Stamford, hoping to catch dinner.
I lurk (just watch) youtube videos and never post comments, but your video was so instructional and to the point I had to post a compliment. Thanks pal.
Great video. Very slow and nicely explained. I recently moved to VA and started fishing the Chesapeake bay and watched a very good taug season this year but never knew how to fish for them. Now that you explained it so well, I just need to find the spots.
Thanks! The Tog bite is still really good. As far as the spots just drive along close to the bridge and use your sonar, when you see any structure stop and fish it. It doesn't take much to hold them.
As great as watching you catch fishes, I love your tutorials. I got so much to learn. For now, this newbie will have to stick to fresh water and maybe one day hit that open water. A big thanks to you and your family as I'm sure it takes a lot of time to make vids like these 👍
I use same 3 oz sinkers. My uncle , god rest his soul, would bring us buckets of lead. He had formed and was same sinker. Perfect for bottom fish rig. I use eagle claw black fish hooks
Thank-you for this! Your tutorial has great experienced lessons and I really appreciate the layout of the info. I'm originally from VA Beach, heading to my first tog rec trip on the Big Mohawk in Belmar, NJ
@@SouthernReelsFishing thx. Had a good trip Friday. 5 keeper size and many shorts. Getting there. Our season opens Nov 16. Right now can only keep 1. Looking forward to other videos.
Love this! I fish for tautog love it have been watching my husband and fellow anglers love this species and yes they r delicious! His pb 20 lb this past November 2021 in Rhode Island me I’ve only been at it since September and my current pb is around 7.8 lbs but I love it! This is a great video. U are very good at articulating this and I would like to thank u! But we do use crab!! But ty for the tip I may try that shrimp.
You can get a banana jig mold in larger sizes like 4-8 oz I make them and they slay up here in Rhode island, but we have fast current so we're usually running heavy gear to stay on or near bottom
I know some good taug spots around the Chesapeake bay bridge that hold some nice taug.maybe me and you could meet up and do a trip out there some time, I got gas and bait money been tuagin for years super fun! Great video and some good knowledge!
Gamagatsu octopus hooks are really good. Sharpest of the brands. The shank of the hook is very ridged, haven’t had any problems with the ones I’ve made. Check’em out.
Jesse , I got used small BW . Actually this is my third boat . last two were little bigger boats since I used go to Tuna fishing a lot .But hard to handle it myself . I got this one so I'm hoping I can tow it and go fishing by myself. I think you have been handling yourself ? Hopefully , we can get together soon . I have to catch up with you since I haven't really been out yet .Have a great fishing my friend .
Do you ever use breakaway line for the sinker which gets caught up the most it seems from my own experiences. I use 10 lb test on 30 lbs test leader for sinker only and rarely loose my hooks on a snag
Nice helpful video! Im fishin for Tog up here in CT! I got some 20lb mono laying around you think that'll be good enough for a leader or should it always be floro?
I love that you're making your own sweeper jigs I was thinking about doing something similar have you worked out what the price comes to per jig head? Is it really worth it just wondering because here in the Tidewater area as you know there are a lot of snags and sometimes I can end up spending a large amount of money to just lose a lot of Jigs and catch no a fish
Jesse, there is a guy out of Wilmington, EliasVFishing that catches Tog all winter. I didn't even know they came down this far. He uses mostly the Bottom Sweeper and cut up crab. Take a look.
I made a video back comparing Jig vs Rig on tautog fishing: ruclips.net/video/Jn3l5e2Mea8/видео.html , the result is not too much different, with maybe Jig has a bit more advantage

This was one of the best informational vids for togs I've seen. Thank you sir.
Glad it was helpful!
Listen to him people! Id gone out for them many times before with no luck, first trip with jesse and i get 3 and a decent sized one, knows his stuff!
Thanks man! Awesome Props

I love your honesty. I'm at the CBBT and have never fished for Tautog. Definitely will be using your tips!

wow! lots of great info here! Im off to try and catch my first tog today in OC, NJ off 9thst pier.
I use same 3 oz sinkers. My uncle , god rest his soul, would bring us buckets of lead. He had formed and was same sinker. Perfect for bottom fish rig. I use eagle claw black fish hooks
Very straight forward. Love it. Us in the N East have similar techniques. Tight lines!
Great informative video! For someone now in an area with Tog I got a lot of great information from this video!
Thanks for the nice comment. and I'm glad that this helped!
Thanks for sharing. Hoping to target some togs before the season is out. One of the best eating saltwater fish I've ever had.

Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Tutorial. I'm going for my first outing for BlackFish in the Long Island sound, and this really helps.
Happy fishing!
Good luck!
While I'm a cod fisher, I might go out for tautog this fall, now that I know how to rig crabs, and have the proper tackle.
Appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience....very down to earth.
This is some great info, thanks for posting , I plan on targeting Taug at the CBBT this spring.
Great video sir. Thanks for sharing! Ive only fished for them on jetties. I can imagine trying to effectively set the hook from a kayak is tricky
Not too bad really. It seems easier in a kayak actually
Thank you for all these great tips. I am a beginner and having trouble with the hookset. This should help me.
Good Luck

Just awesome. I really appreciate this bud. Thank you. Is very helpful.
I use green crabs, ones with bright orange guts. Also squid and sea clams, in cubes, cut work in Massachusetts, buzzards bay
So knowledgeable 👍🎣
Great video. Thanks
Excellent video!
this video is right on time im going out friday for blackfish first time
Good luck!

New to tog. Thank you
good video,thanks
Very informative! Thanks
Great video nice job explaning
For the high lows try circle hooks, with the angle they eat the crab at i noticed I’ve had a higher hook up ratio
Great tips . Thank you.
Thank you! How you liking the Boat? What did you end up getting?

Watching your video I notice the bumper around the kayak. Did you do a video on that? Looks great
Yes I have an older video on it
@@SouthernReelsFishing Ty
Thank you for the tips on togs
No problem
Those hooks on the jigs are kinda big for some of the baby blackfish . Do they sell jig heads with a smaller sized hook?
crazy Informitive thanks man
Thanks bro im going to slay today !!
Thanks, a lot of good info.
Glad it was helpful!
I know this is an older video but these figh are related to fish in California called sheephead different then sheepshead very interesting.
Good stuff man!
What kind of shrimp do you recommend? One you can buy from grocery store?
Awesome video, going to try some salt water fishing with my daughters on vacation and your instructions were helpful. What bait shop do you use?
Oceans east in Virginia beach
Do you recommend all these things at Indian river inlet also.....I'm going Friday

Definitely worth it, for a 3 ounce jig it cost roughly 70 cents each to pour your own.
Good Video buddy!
Thanks!
Don't forget about sand fleas. I've caught nice tautog with them, and they're ez chum too.
Yes indeed, forgot to mention them Thanks
I'm up in Long Island if you do use the green crabs (which I mainly fished with for tog) do you prefer a longer shank on jig?
Yes in that case.
Great info
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you a lot I’m going fishing in The Long Island sounds this October for tautog and little tunny
Your welcome
Can I use lores that look like crab and shrimp?
Thanks again!
Anytime!
Thank never fished for them going to give a try
Are you in Maryland area? I heard you mention chesapeake bay / bridge…
No Southern Chesapeake bay. Va beach
love it
Do you ever fish in Ocean city, MD?
Tautog at the Bridge near Annapols?
I have no idea man
does color make a difference with jigs
Not from what I've seen, haven't really tested it though
Tog fishing 2022 Please
Maybe so we'll see
According to what they eat I could have been a tautog . The FG knot I will use my imagination on that one 😂😂
Lol same here. Look up the FG knot, it is ridiculous to tie.... But it is the strongest line to leader knot....
I will make sure to look it up

Yeah he is a friend of mine. We fished together at the Bay Bridge last fall. That dude is a fishing beast!
Gamakatsu octopus hooks all the way
Will have to try that!
@@SouthernReelsFishing yeah I've caught well over 200 keeper tog all I use is gamakatsu octopus hooks in 3/0 to 5/0

It is hard to tell really. I have had one work and the other not, then vice versa the next day...
No way in New England use 20 lbs for Tautog. Its very big & Big fight for Tog in New port RI and cape cod canal.
You would be surprise what 20lb can land. Just have to take your time lol
did you get this info from the encyclopedia of fishing lol
Lol just the first part
lmao I knew it. great book
