Good for him 👏 He is such a good closer (one of my favorite pitchers of all time) He just lost motivation for some reason. You can see Chapman's pitches with the Yankees, it looked like he wasn't finishing his fastball. Like he was uncomfortable or possibly hurt. With KC, you can really see Chapman finishing his pitch and really snapping through with his delivery. He's. Looking good and comfortable and the velo shows it.
He’s got a different front leg extension before he gets his foot down to generate all the power off his back hip. It’s pretty easy to see if you watch the newer video.

He’s got speed in his pitches but has no control. That was his big problem in NY. Then expected to make the post season roster and was was upset and never showed up to practice, Yankees let him go after that.
Pitching coaches for Royals said they noticed he was crouching too much in his windup and it was probably making him tense. They told him to loosen it up and, well, this is the result
I said it during the off season that he was training like a beast to bring out his full potential for the humiliation he embraced by the "Yankees". Look at him now.
He and the rangers just won the World Series in game 5 over the dbacks. Chapman is one of my all time fav pitchers, so happy to see him win a world series along with the first TEXAS RANGER team to ever do it. Congrats to every organization involved
Love the dude. His delivery was fucking deceptive with a huge back swing of the arm. Nasty though, paired with his slider that when he gets controlled, ugh, filthy. Loved him on my Cubbies that year.
Same thing with Kenley in Boston with his cutter maxing out at 96 MPH this season I believe. Hopefully they can both keep it up. Otherwise you can probably just file this under the "volatility of being a reliever" bin
I like Chapman. I was a pitcher and I know one thing. To take a line drive to the head and to step back on the mound is not easy and he did. And then afterwards, he went to New York and had to try and fill a role once occupied by the greatest closer to play baseball. It's easy to highlight all the downs and faults that you see and hear about players, but let's not forget about all the challenges they faced and the hurdles they had to jump as well.
Probably can't explain everything, but it looks like he slowed down his windup, specifically in his leg kick. He brings it up slower and also closer to his chest, and holds it longer. I'd guess it helps focus his strength toward the plate and keep his mechanics more consistent by not rushing through them
If a pitcher can get their arm properly rested during the off-season and tweak their mechanics a bit they can get some life back in that arm late in their career. Nolan Ryan was throwing high 90s in his 40s because he was on the cutting edge of recuperation techniques
"Somehow" is his mechanics have improved. He's sitting lower in his back leg. He's down nearly to 90°, like he's in a chair, before launching. In pinstripes, he's only dropping 45°, and not driving as much with his legs.
I think he’s the only guy that has stayed somewhat healthy throwing as hard as he does. I’ll give him credit for that. Even though he has blown some of the biggest and if not the biggest game ever played in mlb history.
Rajai Davis and I grew up within 20 miles of each other and our high schools regularly play each other. Hes about 8 years older than me. Ive been a life long Cubs fan and if i ever see him, im asking him how he got around on that pitch. Stg thought i was the one who was cursed... not the cubs
I know a lot of people are saying "steroids," but I think it's mechanical (and possibly a little healthier with the off-season break). He's using his legs a lot better in the clips from this season compared to his Yankees clips.
You can tell he slowed down his motion drastically in KC. he looks a lot more balanced so he’s not losing as much velo as he did when he was in NY. He can make a bag this off-season if he keeps this up
Agreed, he also is loading more into his left side and driving harder and longer than before allowing his arm and mechanics to flow freely. Love seeing the #CubanMissile in peak form!
For anyone saying he needs to be tested, look at his mechanics from the Yankees to the Royals. On the Yankees he was having bad command issues and it looks like he isn't using his body as efficiently as he could. On the Royals he is dropping into his back leg with a more violent follow-through to help me through harder.
