    Ah, I hate the process of the "Lunch" interview, it happened to me once! The atmosphere was very strange, what was worse was that the department people took all the interviewees out for lunch together, which felt like a subtle competition at the lunch table, no rest.

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  2 года назад

      I think the lunch can be really tricky - trying to still be in 'interview mode' whilst eating something is hard!

    Thank you for a very helpful video! I am so glad that I've found your channel :D I have been watching a few of your videos as I have a lecturer interview for a London-based university in 2 weeks' time (nerve-wracking!). Is there another stage of the interview apart from this one you talked about? Many thanks!

      Congratulations on landing the interview. They will vary between places, some may take two days others everything happens in one. Typically it could include: some form of refreshment with colleagues, a presentation to the department, interview with students, interview(s) with academic staff members and HR, and the opportunity to teach a mini class. You might not get all of these activities! All the best for it 😀

    Can you still be a lecturer when you have dyscalculia and dyslexia? I worry about this. I'm due to finish my undergrad in June and start masters in September. Eventually I would love to become a lecturer either for uni or maybe further education. 🙌

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  Год назад

      I hope you are enjoying your undergraduate studies. Being a lecturer is about conveying our subject to others... often easier if you love the subject! I suspect you would find that your personal experiences help you support others as they learn. Part of the reason I love academia is this support, diversity and inclusion. If you find a good department, the environment for students and staff will be supportive. Good luck with the masters 😀

    Thank you Caroline. I've recently had an interview and it all went as if scripted by you! I am currently waiting for the outcome, as I was informed one more candidate would be interviewed. If you don't mind, would you be kind to direct a video regarding research proposals; how to determine, outline, decide on a topic and draft a research proposal for a Ph.D degree. I am hoping to take that lecturer job and teach while researching for my Ph.D pari pasu. Your guidance would be much appreciated. Again, your approach to elucidating these academic matters (that is not found in any book) is quite enlightening; hope you may one day wish to write and publish a book to this effect. All the best Caroline. James

    Thank you for your sharing Dr CST. I will be interviewed as a lecturer next week. So i like to know what is the best question to ask if the interviewer says "Do you have any question?"?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  Год назад +1

      Well done on getting the interview. I'm not sure there is a 'best' question, but you want to ask one that shows you are engaged with the role and interested in the position. Asking about existing research seminar series that may run, or collaborations the university has, maybe whether you get a dedicated 'research' day away from teaching - all could give you more information about the position. All the best for next week 😃

    Good morning, first thanks alot for this facinating tips 😊 I would like to know smth please! When you apply for a british university in your country ( mine is Algeria) Do they fancy that you speak in british accent or your own accent?

      Thanks for watching 😀 I speak using my normal accent and try not to talk too fast - which can happen to people when we are nervous!

    Thanks Caroline, such an informative talk. I was wondering is it ok to decline the lunch? Because I am interviewing in my own school, and I live very close to the interview place. So I was thinking no need to add to the burden of other staff, cause they need to find someone to have lunch with me. And so I say I don't need that when the executive team guy asked me.

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  Год назад

      In my case the lunch was part of the interview process, plus I wanted to chat to the other academics! The interview process does vary, you may not get offered a lunch. As you are already doing , I think it is best to chat with the uni to ask if you need to attend. All the best for the interview 😀

    I’ve been invited to a college lecturer interview on Friday but I have no teaching experience (they know this), do you have any advice? I have to do a 10 min presentation as if it was in front of a class!

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  3 года назад

      Ooh well done on landing the interview! If you can pick the topic I'd try to select something you feel comfortable talking about. Ten minutes goes quickly, so consider how many points you want to 'teach' in your lecture. You could also consider your lecture style - i.e. using slides, handwriting, showing video clip etc. All the best for Friday :)

    What if you don't have publication?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST  Год назад

      If you don't have journal publications, you may look to use conference proceedings or industry reports. However, it will likely come up as a topic for conversation in the interview.
