    Keep in mind to demand the appropriate position where necessary. It's not that rare, that some professors want the first author position despite not contributing anything besides their existence. I am very adamant to demand first authorship where applicable and even go as far as outright refusing any authorship to professors who didn't even do any supervision work. Don't care who you are, whether or not I work for you or whatever. If you want to be on a paper, you better contribute. To my surprise, I never had much discussions about it. Just recently we had an undergraduate do all the work, me supervising the work and professor merely supervising my supervision. I swapped the positions of the authors around for her to be first author, me being second and him being last with the remark that if he doesn't like it, he's free to completely delete his name off the paper. No objections, it was submitted with my suggested order.

    Hi Dr CST! Many thanks for your videos. I have found them really useful! Please I need your thoughts as I am preparing for an online interview for a UK lecturer position. I was told I would give a 10-minute presentation as part of the interview and I would only be given the topic few minutes into the interview with about 45 minutes to then prepare, take a break for few minutes and then do the online presentation. How do I go about preparing for this kind of interview? Will this likely be focused on just my research (past, present and future) or I may be asked to do a microteach? I am not sure how much can be covered in 10 minutes...please what are your thoughts? I have not had an interview before without receiving the presentation topic days before the interview session. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST Месяц назад

      😀 Thanks for commenting, congratulations for starting the path towards your DBA. Already getting a class is great. When I did my PhD I only taught on one class - as I wanted to balance the time between teaching and my own research. At our university the Director of Learning and Teaching organises the teaching allocation and we have a separate academic who coordinates the teaching the PostDocs do - if you have similar you could ask them about more teaching? All the best with your research.

    Hi, I commented on one of your other videos (I love your work, by the way). My master's degree is in Law, AI and New Technologies (LLM (the degree, not Large Language Models)). In my law school, they do not want students using any kind of AI to complete their work due to the risk of plagiarism. I'm sure you understand that within the law, both academic and industry, integrity is, first and foremost, a top priority. In my free time, I researched AI detection tools such as the one built into TurnItIn, and while it gives an indication of how much of the content is written by AI, it can actually be false. For example, OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) developed and released their own AI detection tool. A week later, it was withdrawn from the market due to inaccuracies in identifying AI-generated content. My theory is that a Generative AI system such as ChatGPT needs training data to learn and create the content, and this data is originally human-generated. This means that the AI is creating its content based on human-generated sources, which results in the AI content being indistinguishable from humans. While a lecturer may know for certain that the assessment paper is created by AI, the student copied and pasted it into a Word document and submitted it, proving it is impossible. This is why I am studying for a PhD in the best way to integrate AI into legal education. I am happy to discuss this further with you in detail if you would like. Let me know.

  • @DrJay_PhD
    @DrJay_PhD Месяц назад

    Hi, I'm due to start my PhD in Law & AI. It's a multidiscipline exploring the best use and integration of artificial intelligence in legal education to prepare students for an AI-driven legal career. I was wondering if you had any 'early academic career' advice, or maybe you have already made a video on it?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST Месяц назад

      Hi - congratulations on starting the PhD soon 😃 Your research topic sounds really interesting. I did a podcast series chatting to other researchers who use AI - including education and legal topics. Just in case you fancy listen, it is on Spotify "Surrey Speaks, Will AI...?" 😀 I've made a few earlier career early videos, but not one on how to 'start' the PhD research journey. Fab idea for a video, I will add it to the list - thank you! In the meantime this one is about the PhD review process ruclips.net/video/GGWsAT6r1l8/видео.htmlsi=d2Q7ELrYu8EhDIpB

  • @dr.mohamedmansour2971
    @dr.mohamedmansour2971 Месяц назад

    A PhD is typically considered a prerequisite for academic research positions, although rare exceptions may exist. While postdoctoral experience is often beneficial and sometimes expected by top-tier institutions, it is not universally mandatory. Postdoctoral requirements can vary depending on the nature of the position, with research-focused roles generally placing greater emphasis on such experience than teaching-oriented ones. Ultimately, individual circumstances and career goals play a significant role in determining the necessity of a postdoc. Thanks for the great video, Greetings 😍😍🌹🌹♥♥

  • @gar5555
    @gar5555 Месяц назад

    Love your videos and they have been deeply helpful. Speaking from experience, academia is littered with precariously employed part-time teaching staff who do tutorials, grading, etc. who are always close to burn-out (underpaid and overworked). When it comes to Research Assistant positions (post-doc) my experience is that those positions are a fait a comple with the 'public tender' being mostly for show. The position already being agreed to be given with a preferred candidate. The reality is that for a vast majority of hopeful or precarious academics, academia is something of a racket unless you know the right people in the right places. Getting a PhD only means that you will be starting at the very bottom rung of a fiercely competitive and deeply unfair ladder

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST Месяц назад

      Thank you for sharing - I agree, academia is a very competitive space to work in. (I know other careers are too) Like you say, there is a strong emphasis on building your academic network... might be worth a video on the topic. Thank you.

Applied research ideas are more likely to attract grants; thus, collaboration with industry is essential. However, this collaboration is often individualized, and there are no official channels in most cases. Universal standardized protocols for collaboration might be a useful idea. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the video and eagerly await the next part. Keep up the great work ❤❤ 🌹🌹 Greetings❤❤
