Try closing the garage door some so your eyes adjust to the dark some then use a lamp just to illuminate the area you are welding. I use a small led that has a magnet base and a flex thing so I can aim it.. welding in full sun your eyes never become dark addapted.

Clean your tacks first just a suggestion is put a t joint in middle and you get to weld both sides !

Check out Tim welds I can't see my welds. Get comfortable do some dry runs . Focus on your weld pool and try to get it in the Grove on the same piece. Most of your weld is on the flat piece and misses the v. Your travel speed was not to fast but you could Turn up your wire speed.

What size wire and brand are you using?
My TL 200m burns hottt....lol on 110 try using the yeswelder .030 or .035 flux core wire. You get way less spatter. The only bad thing about that brand of wire is it has magnesium in it and you can't use it for structural work other than that it's the best wire I've ever ran.

you mention your helmet being too dim. I'm going to suggest you go the other direction so your helmet is darker. What happens is the brightness is blinding you from seeing what you want/need to see. Are you doing this with Fluxcore wire? Seems like a lot of splatter for gas, which should cut that out almost completely.

Ah, thanks for the tip JWGasner I'll try that. I am indeed using flux core, no gas yet.
