Holy crap! I've struggled to play this beat forever, never realizing the kick is on 2 and 4 WITH the snare!!! So much more natural. Thank you Mr. Taylor! Your style of teaching and playing is most outstanding.
Excellent lesson Steven, your breakdown of shuffles, especially more complex ones like the Purdie or Rosanna is detailed and extremely helpful. Thank you for all you do, blessings brother.
I first heard this in DT's live version of Solitary Shell from Live at Budokan. It happens during the instrumental section, played on the splash. Loved it and learned it. :)
Great beat for beginning to open up the shuffle for improvising, getting comfortable with the 2 over 3 element has created a lot of possibilities for interesting shuffle variations/fills in a shuffle, it was a beat I struggled to be creative with before.
Ive watched many of your videos stephen. You are a good instructor and break things down so they are easy to understand. This beat actually is what helped me learn the purdie, bonham, rosanna style shuffle. I was playing this due to the tears for fears song when one day i wanted to learn fool in the rain and i was like hold on a second here lol. I practiced that shuffle so much i forgot about this. Funny how that happens.
Could you please do a vid about like a quick time shuffle a la Willy Cantu with Buck Owens? I can't seem to play it without completely burning out my muscles which tells me my technique is completely effed even though I think I'm doing it right. Help!
Ive been playing drums sense i was 4 years old and im 11 now. i watched freedrumlessons.com untill i was about 8, but now i just play drums by ear. thanks you guys so much for inspiring my for being a drummer. its now my dream to become a professional drummer in a band. if you reading this and love drumming, this could someday be you. keep inspiring all the drummers out there freedrunlessons.com!!. The rest of my feelings can not be explaned in words 😂😂
Antsaboy Traditional grip was developed originally because of how the drum was being carried...slung over one shoulder. The angle of the drum made it necessary to adjust the grip. That carried over even though our drums now are set nowhere near that angle. In the end, it's a personal preference though. If you dig traditional grip, play with it.
In my opinion, we can call it a quater note triplet only if it was on the downbeat. We can't quite call it an offbeat triplet as pointed out in this video: ruclips.net/video/F4TyBe6AHEI/видео.html
Antoine Demangeat But putting it on a different partial doesn't change the note. If I had a quarter note starting on beat 2 instead of beat 1 it's still a quarter note.
why a triple-let would be a set of three 'lets' grouped together with a specific timing in between that said set of three 'lets' that would be different than the timing in between the triple 'lets'...that is what a triple-let would be. ;-)
would an easier explanation of the hand pattern just be to say "do triplets between the HH and SD but start with your left hand" then add in the backbeat
ya that's one way of thinking about it. but it's always good to break these things down like this, so as to better understand what you're doing, as well as further develop hand independence.
I came here to learn shuffles because of Tears for Fears. It's funny how often that song "Everybody wants to rule the world" comes up when drummers talk about shuffles
Believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved..Be baptized and repent of your sins. Repent simply means to turn away from your sins. God loves you and so do I.
Man, how much harder could you make it to learn?lol. Isn't it really just the hands playing triplets, the right on hat, left on snare? Learn it that without the 2n4 back beat snare. Then later in practice time just double the snare to get the back beat when the triplet left hand does not fall on the backbeat. Trying to play a 1/4 note triplet starting on the middle note for a beginner is going to be very hard otherwise.
Great video! Perfect layers of complexity for us beginners to work our way up to.
Holy crap! I've struggled to play this beat forever, never realizing the kick is on 2 and 4 WITH the snare!!! So much more natural. Thank you Mr. Taylor! Your style of teaching and playing is most outstanding.
You bet...so glad it cleared things up
Thank you for clapping out the beats! Not as many drummers do that anymore in tutorials I've noticed. Great tutorial!
That's really useful, thank you!!!
You bet Chiara...glad it helped!
Excellent lesson Steven, your breakdown of shuffles, especially more complex ones like the Purdie or Rosanna is detailed and extremely helpful. Thank you for all you do, blessings brother.
Reed Sowell So Glad they help Reed!

Joseph Gurzynski Thanks Joseph
Great variation of a killer groove
Cool groove pattern! thanks!
Awesome, you're a great teacher. It's easy for me to understand what to play and with options to increase complexity.
David Lodge Thanks David...glad it helped!
Very cool way to play a shuffle. I'm definitely going to work on that one. I am a big fan of shuffles. Thanks for posting that!
Gary Clark You bet Gary

This was so freaking cool! Thank you Stephen :D
Lati Sullivan You bet

So true...really helps to open up your shuffles and creativity within them
That bass drum boom though...
(love it!)
Great job Stephen
Thanks so much!
Always wondered how that groove was played in that song. Thanks for the lesson.
You're more than welcome
Thanks for this! I love "Everybody Wants to rule the world". Now I can have something to follow for the basics in playing this song! :)
You bet Bobi!
awesome. i need to try this. thanks for this video.

3:04 I found myself humming the "bah bah" keyboard bit to this😋
This is going to take some practice. Thanks Stephen!
You bet!
Nice and easy

stephan fidock Thanks Stephan!

awesome
Thanks so much! I've been wanting to find some grooves that begin to use the snare more heavily. Something a little more subtle
John Crawford sure thing John!
Always thought Manny Elias was a genius to use this in a pop song in the day.
Hey Stephen!! Is that the same groove as Somekind Of Wonderful" - Grand Funk Railroad?
David Clawson Hey David...that's a shuffle as well, but a different type of shuffle. Same feel, different groove.
I've always called what Don Brewer plays a Rock Shuffle. Great video BTW. The new digs (drums, room, lighting, etc.) are looking' great!
Listen "Ich tu dir weh" and you can hear same groove but the bass drum plays triplets and all others same as in here👍🏼
hey i can hear that!
Snare is the SLP Tama Steel Vintage? ;)
A nice easy thing you don't usually think about.
Could you please do a vid about like a quick time shuffle a la Willy Cantu with Buck Owens? I can't seem to play it without completely burning out my muscles which tells me my technique is completely effed even though I think I'm doing it right. Help!
For anyone and everyone who can't visualize or conceptualize and off-beat quarter note triplet, that's half of what this video teaches.
“Everybody wants to rule the world”

Can you Tell me why isn't nobody playing with traditional grip anymore?

It doesn't offer any advantage over matched; just makes a rock player look goofy IMO.
Also known as a quarter note triplet 😉

Lightness by Death Cab For Cutie
That was buried way back in my memory. I remember thinking about that beat and how I didn't grasp it like over a decade ago.
nICE. Now thrown a couple of open hi hats for good measure.
Maxx Bifacial McGerk Absolutely...love throwing in open hats here and there on this Groove.

Excellent! Thanks so much; Can you please do Cherish- Madonna
Sir
You can make beat for me🙏
Reminds me of Sundown Syndrome by Tame Impala.

Just a basic 3 over 2 polyrhythm

Spot on Charly. What a tune!
Yep...I point to that song in the beginning. Best example of the groove I've heard. One of the best songs from that time!
Another superb lesson Stephen. Yup they don't make tunes like that anymore! bring back the 80's 😉
Stephen Taylor 👍🏻 Great lesson man!! Thanks!
no kidding...
なんじゃこりゃ
really? ppl need this groove explained and broken down? hmm
^
call in what ever you want, i stand by this being really simple to the point where it shouldnt be specifically asked about
Let's see you doing it, with the ghost notes and whilst keeping time.
