I 10000% agree with all of your takes. The show was at its best in S1 and I absolutely loved S4 because of Taylor and her relationship with Ryan, so much so that in season 4 they were the couple that kept me watching because it was during the time that Summer was avoiding Seth due to her grief. Also, she was SO much better for Ryan than Marissa ever was. I think I'm gonna rewatch season 1 and 4 😬😂

    • @AstroSully

Ryan and Marissa was written to hell after season 1. Taylor from writing standpoint will always be worse considering that she was written as a scapegoat of the worst written season of the show aka Season 3.

Ryan & Taylor were so forced. It’s like they tried to replace Marissa with Taylor in season 4 after she died, smh. I'm glad that the vetoed the decision of making Ryan Sandy's illegitimate son. Sandy and Kristen had a rock solid, strong marriage, and I might not have seen Sandy the same way. The OC was a fantastic show! It was unique and dealt with real life and growing pains. It showed family dynamics and teenage angst represented by both teen and adult characters. And there still hasn't been a teen drama that could even touch the greatness of this show. It was messy at times but it was incredibly earnest, sweet, raw and funny. My biggest gripe with the show is how they handled Marissa Cooper. She was a flawed yet likeable character who brought a lot of levity and interesting drama to balance out the more light hearted and comedic elements in the beginning and then she became a caricature of herself in seasons 2 and 3 (moreso 3) to a point I was like I get why Mischa Barton wanted off this show. There was a great foundation for character development for her but it never really happened, sometimes it felt her character was being suffocated by misogyny culturally and behind the scenes (it's the 2000s so not really surprising).

    • @AstroSully

Yes! I loved Taylor Townsand! Season 4 was a return to lightness and fun with a side of soapy drama like it started as. I totally agree with you about season 3 being a disaster, being fine with them killing off Marissa, and not liking the upgrade in screen time for her only slightly less annoying little sister. I remember getting a screener of The OC pilot (i was a part of some teen program with Seventeen or Teen Vogue or some other mag of that kind) and my friends and i watched it the summer before it premiered. There is something so nostalgic about this memory for me. I have super fond feelings for this show and the time in my life when we were watching. • @T_Cup
    @T_Cup Год назад +3

Completely agree that Taylor came into the show right when she was needed, but by then it was too late. I know the drama and the actor dynamics have been discussed ad nauseum, but imo the main reason the show ended is because of those dynamics and how Mischa Barton self-sabotaged when she was clearly getting pushed out. Rachel Bilson and Josh Schwartz were good friends before the show aired, so it's not an accident that Summer's storylines became more prominent and positive while Marissa's character regressed as she was metaphorically and literally assassinated. She was also 17-years-old and Bilson was not only besties with the showrunner , but also dating one of the lead actors, who was the public's favourite and who was great friends with the other lead actor. So I can imagine she must've felt ostracized by the cast and then by the public when Josh Schwartz painted her as a diva and the rest of the cast agreed, making the public agree. No one else has been scrutinized as much as the youngest main cast member, who tbh brought more attention to the show than anyone else (and I say that with pain as an eternal Ryan stan). It made sense for her to leave, given the small window of opportunity her IT girl popularity afforded her - and at least she was welcome elsewhere, even if addiction bested her at the time

For me, the OC ended when Marissa died. That should have been the finale. The fourth season became like a parody of itself after the first few episodes.

I remember the OC back when I was in school. With into it then fill out of it. Then finished it as an adult with a binge watch on Netflix. Funny thing. RUclips wasn't even a thing when the OC came out.

Every single scene with peter gallagher was a masterclass. For me thats a thing this show did better than any other teen drama before and after is really focus in on the adult cast and do it brilliantly... well least till season 3 has you mention. though for me season 4 was pretty good since they killed off the worst character.

2003, I was 14 yo. Sweet times, and the soundtrack changed my personality. Today I'm 34, and I can't watch the show again, because I just see a bunch of rich people with problems that could b solved by sitting and having a mature conversation.

I believe there's actually more love for ryan & taylor than people think. I keep seeing on various platforms like youtube, instagram & tumblr how users are saying that even though it's an unpopular opinion, they like them together. I think it's no longer that much of a rare case anymore. They seem to really have support from both fans & cast/crew.

Taylor Townsend annoyed the fuck outta me! (Even though the actress was spectacular!)
I couldn’t stand her as a character and even though I tried to like her so much…
Marissa & Ryan were the true ENDGAME soulmates…and the show really ended when Marissa died in season 3 finale!
I’m STILL so deeply heartbroken over that…and I’m 34 years old lol
I had the ultimate crush on both Mischa & Marissa!
She undoubtedly was the STAR of the show!

Taylor was HIGHLY ANNOYING the character grated on my nerves. I just found it so disrespectful to Marissa to have any kind of relationship with Taylor beyond being a classmate.

I got hyped around like 2004 or 2005. I was watching Gilmore Girls I think and also Everwood. The next show was The O.C. I really enjoyed that show's first season back then. Season 2 was a lot down already, never moved beyond it. I want to make clear that it was a very different time for me. I was obviously a lot younger, actually in my teen years, I had little money for DVDs, streaming was a dream of the future. So my selection of shows was very limited.
When rewatching season 1 a couple of years later, I personally realized how bad this show really is. Super annoying love triangles from hell, Summer is super annoying, this Oliver guy, rich people drama, constant fightings. I really liked the first 3 episodes with Ryan's introduction and adoption. After that the show just became a shallow soap. Today I wouldn't watch any of these teen shows I suppose. I used to watch Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill and some Party of Five.
My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks were and probably still are great shows because they only had a season and they tried to be authentic, grounded and as real as a show can possibly be.
