  • Today we’re planting up the top bed, which should really be re-named the Obelisk Bed. We have some gorgeous shrubs and perennials for this bed to compliment the Blush Noisette Roses, and next week we will add the dahlias and annuals. I’m so excited to see this border in full flower through the seasons.

    Aww, how nice of Richard offering to plant out everything for you! What a lovely garden partner you have, Annette! My husband would NEVER do that - he has however done most of the ‘donkey work’ in our new build garden, so I suppose I can’t really complain 😏
    I find it so nice watching the two of you working together in your beautiful garden!

      Thanks so much Elie. It's definitely a team effort here - and fortunately we each like different aspects of gardening. He actually finds weeding relaxing and satisfying but I'm bored to death🤣 after about 10 mins! I prefer planting and organising and designing and he, like your husband, likes to do the donkey work and he's also a very restless person so can't sit still. I could while away hours in the garden just planning and visualising things in my head. then I have to break the news to him that I have new plans...😂😁

    Love, love your videos Annette and Richard. You are definitely an inspiration for us all to get out in the garden with your smile and excitement. My husband can relate to Richard as he helps me in the garden, too. He built me three obelisk a few years ago and my husband use to tease me that, they looked like oil wells. If only, right. 😂 I couldn't wait to be able to look out my kitchen window and see beautiful roses growing on them. Love the choice of rose you made Annette. It will be stunning on your beautiful obelisk. Richard, thank God for good husbands.

    Hi Annette and Richard, your team work is really looking good, but there will be so much to see later as the plants grow and mature. The roses on the obelisks will look amazing, and it's a good thing that the type you have chosen won't cover the frames completely so they can still be a feature in their own way. Richard might need his own shed to hide in with some home brew after all that planting. You told us all about the plants you had planted which is really useful if someone is looking for ideas for their garden. Thanks for another great video. X

    Hi, the obelisks are stunning. I can't wait to see plants climbing up them.
    We had a horrificly african dusty week , the whole of Greece which stayed on the leaves of our plants but also got inside our houses. It was excessively hot for the season , 31C. But last Thursday thank God strong wind moved it away and we saw blue skies and breathed.

    I love the Obelisks. I like the height they give the bed. My garden is terraced and all the beds are on a slight slope but I still sneak in an obelisk or two. I think they add structure. I could do with Richard to plant out all the annuals I have grown. He is so efficient. My husband does all heavy tasks liking turning compost and pruning trees but I do all planting of small plants

      Richard is a massive help, but he can't sit still so it's good to give him jobs to do and I struggle with some of the tasks because of painful knees so thank goodness he likes wedding and planting 😁

    Greetings From Ireland, Great video and a beautiful garden, I love the music at the beginning of your videos It makes me want to dance. I have salvia amistad and salvia love and wishes in pots, I keep them out the back to get as much sun as possible. When they are tall enough I put them up against the front wall and it looks like they are growing in the ground. I bring them into the glass house to over winter them.

    Love your new obelisks! My husband built me a couple 4’ obelisks painted black for tomatoes in my raised garden bed & a tall 7’ one in our west side yard for one of my rose climbers. The 2 shorter ones have blown over during our wind storms, so if you experience crazy wind storms maybe consider staking them down as we’ve had to do? Enjoy your videos! Hi Annette, loving your new planting scheme. Love the Eupatorium and the Caryopteris you have chosen. I have Caryopteris Worcester Gold. The Winter wasn't kind to it, but it is picking up now- just a few more shoots to break into leaf. My nw Royal Wedding Papaver, planted 6 weeks ago, has got a bloom opened and has 2 more left to open. I manage to keep my salvias over winter by using the method i told you about, Annette, so I am sure, as we have similar growing conditions that you will bring them through ok. They are later to shoot and flower than if kept indoors overwinter though. I have Veronica Shirley blue, planted in front of my polemoniums, but it does flop, despite having a support hoop. How do you keep yours 'tidy' please? I have Papaver Patties's plum planted with Delphinum 'Astolat' , and to the front, pinky flowered chives, -they are a similar tone of dusky pinl and are a great contrast to each other. Richard you are amazing to do the planting - a great help to Annette, I'm sure. My hubster loves weeding but not so keen on planting, although he does help me with large shrubs! Happy gardening :-) x

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks so much Be. One of the Caryopteris that I planted down by the brick arch has definitely bitten the dust and will need replacing - shame. The Veronica just stays pretty upright on it's own until nearer the end of it's flowering, I guess when it's more top-heavy and then it just lays flat on the ground - at that point I just chop it down. No time for flouncy fussy plants here 🤣

    What a beautiful spirea 🥰💐Can’t get over how much you have planted in your garden since I have subscribed to your channel. Always something new. I’m curious, how long have you been at this house and if it is awhile why are you just planting/ planning your garden now? Also how old is your house, you have mentioned before I think about some of it being heritage( could be wrong though)

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks Carol. Yes, this garden is a BIG project. When we moved here in 2011, the garden was very overgrown and uncared for. It was filled with way too many conifers and dead trees and was riddled with weeds. We didn't really do any gardening at all until late 2015, when the renovation/building work was completed on the house. At this point the garden had been cleared (badly) and was a lumpy, rutted, muddy mess but I had a dream....
      It's been a slow process over the years, with not much time to spare since our kids were/are super-sporty and our focus was to support them and enjoy their company while they were still at home. Since they are now young adults, and have left home, Richard and I are able to spend much more time in the garden and so we're gradually creating the garden of our dreams.
      I'm so happy to have you all along for the journey and I'm glad you can see the progress because sometimes it can feel overwhelming and also too slow! 😁
      Our house was built about 450 years ago but we don't have an exact date. It's Grade II listed, which means it has conservation protection and we can't do any work on it without first getting written permission - it's a long and complicated process fraught with difficulties and obstacles.🫤
      Thanks for watching and for your support 😊

      @@cottoverdithanks for your reply Annette. I don’t think you are going slow. Seems like you are always busy in the garden. Can’t keep up with all your videos. 😁Very interesting about your house being 450 years old. Our house was built in 1855 which for Adelaide is very old as South Australia was only founded in 1836 and a lot of the first homes were wattle and daub our just wooden slabs and no longer standing. I see you are up to 10100 subs. Well done🎉Will you get a plaque from yYou Tube. Proud to say I have been following you since you had about 1000 subs❤💐

    I am tempted by Blush Noisette too, and I am wondering if the scent lives up to the description - with some of the scents described on websites as strong, I don't necessarily find it is the case, although I am aware there are many variables involved. Have you had the chance to smell this in real life? How does it compare in terms on strength of scent to say, Desdemona? (not comparing the type of smell here, just how intense it is). Sorry if I sound peculiar, just trying to make an informed choice. Fab obelisks btw, they really do look the part.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Roxana, yes, I agree - quite often when a rose is described as having a strong fragrance, I find I have to stick my nose right in the bloom to smell anything at all. There are a few plants that I find add incredible scent to a garden just by walking by - Rose Harlow Carr is one of them - best in the morning or early evening - not so good in bright hot sunlight but I think that's the same for all fragrance. I haven't had any blooms yet on my Blush Noisette so unfortunately I can't help with that - sorry.
