I like seeing DIY ideas. I am behind on using the wacky rig but have looked at the manufactured wacky rig tool. Their price is not bad but I have stuff laying around that could do the same thing. Thanks for giving credit to Greg.
Thanks for the video. I went to Dollar General and bought the Office Hub brand for $2.50. I did as you showed. I also drilled a small hole in the closed end so that an air seal would not stop the worm from going in all the way. I think the Office Hub brand is the same size but has less taper. A stick bait will go all the way in as long you drill the small hole. Thanks again, love the idea.
Great tip! For freshwater fishermen, you can also use those bands to wrap around the thorax of a live crawfish. Then just slide your hook under the band(s) and cast away. It keeps the crawfish alive and allows it to move naturally to entice bass, drum, catfish, etc. Fish on!
Great idea, Steve. Those pony holder bands won’t last, though. I tried those too. Thanks for giving me the credit for the hack. You’re a class act, brother!
Kayak Hacks Fishing, maybe 5 or 6 bands. Maybe. Here’s the thing, though. Hook sets are free. I set the hook HARD! I doubt even 5 or 6 of the rubber bands together would hold up to multiple fish. I stopped by my local Dollar Tree and they have plenty of the exercise bands. They even have two different colors of bands now. Maybe it is a store by store decision to carry different items. I am finding that the resistance bands are more hearty than the bulk Orings I bought at Ace Hardware. Probably because I don’t cut them as thin as the real O-rings. Thanks again for getting the word out, Steve! I’m a subscriber for the life of your channel, bud!
Not sure if somebody else mentioned it but I went to a feed store type place and they sell these rubber bands that people use on their horses hair. They are cheap and work as well. I think you could use a sharpie pen too. Thanks
You can use electrical heat drink tubbing. A lot stronger and you can cut them to any size you want. You can even heat them a bit if needed for a snug fit and they come in different colors too.
Hey Steve: Good solution there. An alternative I've used is Walmart hollow plastic big knitting needles. Get actual O-rings from a hardware store much cheaper than a fishing store.
I've been wacky rigging for years. Another way to get "o" rings on is take a used "sharpie" felt tip pen and remove the filler. It is the same size as the tool that sells at BPS for $7. Who doesn't have a used sharpie pen laying around.
I fish wacky year round. Buy 3/8 inch clear shrink tube, cut about 3/8 inch of shrink tube and insert the worm finding the middle of the worm and with a heat source shrink the tube on the worm. Hook the worm in the middle of the shrink wrap and fish. I often catch 6 - 8 fish or more before the worm needs replacing.
Look for .25inch, ID, silicon tubing. It is used in the fishing world for fastening lead on to a line. But don't worry about that just get the tubing off line. You can also get the band's used for braces made out if silicon. Thanks.
So smart!!! I'm making my run to the dollar store to buy markers. You could use rubber bands for braiding horses manes and tails. However, they are more expensive.
I personally use the clear wide o-rings or bands or whatever you want to call them. This is a great idea but you’ll save more worms with the wider ones at least in my experiences. You can put your hook through one side of the o-ring, through the worm and through the other side of the o-ring and it creates such a stronger hold than these pony holders or skinny o-rings. You spend a little more money with these but you save money being able to keep the same worm on the hook longer. I’ve been able to catch up to a dozen fish with the same worm.
I have the original tool n o rings in my tackle bag however I’m on my way to Dollar store ......great idea now I can have a extra for cheap ......great idea set the hook brother
Great video! You can also run a pony holder through the eye of your hook and back around to the barb and now you got what I call "the weedless whacky worm!"
I use a toothpick to pull it through the eye of the hook...loop it on itself pull down attach to barb and there you you go. Toothpick works great to attach!
I saw a video on the wacky rig and the guy on it used two "o" rings, crossing then and then at the point where they crossed he ran his hook between the rings and under the crossing causing the hook to be perpendicular to the worm, allowing for a perfect hookset.
Thats how i do it with crossed rings it is much better i was losing fish with the hook parallel to the worm now that it crosses the worm even dinks are coming in when they grab it.
Newbie here I'm just a work in progress learning the craft. Question... Would a really tiny bag tie work or will the fish bust me? Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing this video.
@@KayakhacksFishing I tie the treble hooks against each other with one rubber band and the over the lure. This will prevent them from tangling in your tackle box. I will like to send you a picture of how it looks.
Amazing! I just hate the way the fishing industry takes a common item and marks it way up, especially kayak gear. Once again many thanks for another brilliant simple idea
yep the fish don't need a high toleranced sealing ring both in regards to dimensions and material ...unlike plumbing/pneumatic equipment....so why pay for it? lol
I tried the bands but they melt off and are no good. Probably depends on the material of your senko, but I was using regular senkos, not any type of Elaztech or anything.
I have one for you. You may already know it. 8 inches of white nylon rope. Glue or burn one end leaving enough of the center open for a hook to pass through. Unfurl the unworked end. The fish (so far gar, back sea bass, spooted trout [a few] and 2 other salt breeds I don't know) have been caught. The fish bite the rope and can't get their little teeth free. I have had a shark, but he cut the rope.
Great tip but I discovered that not all rubber bands are created equal. I did a whole pack of senkos ahead of time with the dollar store pony ties and when I went to use them the rubber bands melted into a black gooey mess!
Honestly you can order 400 rings for 8$ on Amazon that are specifically designed for wacky rigging Senko or stickbaits. 7$ isn't going to set me back ever and I have aprox 390 more than I use anyways.
So while I was on Amazon searching for O rings, I came across a book entitled Truth, Lies, and O Rings. Seems like some of you boys gots splaining to do.
Are men really not able to get those PONYTAIL holders on the worm without using some kind of tube? How do you think women get them on their hair? You don't need the tube. Just open the damn thing and put the worm through it.
Try 3/8 heat shrink tubing. Put the hook through the tubing and it locks the worm in place. I live on a lake and have been using the same worm for a week now.

Wish I'd seen this sooner. Thanks
It's a great thing to find a video that actually works and can save you money as well. It almost feels like Christmas. Lol🤣

Whoa! Great hack!
This is a great tip, saves a lot of money!
Being an addict I tried all the methods you suggested. And I have been impressed with using black electricians tape.
Thanks for that input!
Awesome tip! Stopping on my way home to get this stuff!
Yep I get my bands from pharmacy. The bands are used on braces for teeth. Didnt know about pony holders, thanks!!
what a awesome awesome awesome video!!! loved it, got straight into the topic and kept it short! Love the dollar store gear! Great Job!
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
I have tried the small rubber bands, they break quite easily. Maybe 4 or 5 at a time might work.
Thanks for that tip!
I love the dollar store. Have made many great fishing baits from the dollar store.
That's awesome
Great Idea! Thank you. You can even select different colors.
Good info. Simple and saves some money. Good presentation as well. Thanks for sharing and posting.
Great idea, Steve. Those pony holder bands won’t last, though. I tried those too. Thanks for giving me the credit for the hack. You’re a class act, brother!
Should you just roll 3 or 4 of them together to increase the strength?
Kayak Hacks Fishing, maybe 5 or 6 bands. Maybe. Here’s the thing, though. Hook sets are free. I set the hook HARD! I doubt even 5 or 6 of the rubber bands together would hold up to multiple fish. I use small zip ties. They work well ! I keep a small bag in the boat make them on the fly!
And I bet they do not break!

Good stuff sir, I would cut the other side of the marker to better center the worm. Recent subscriber and love your videos.
Good tip!
Lobe the content 👏 thanks for your work
Glad you enjoy it!
So smart!!! I'm making my run to the dollar store to buy markers. You could use rubber bands for braiding horses manes and tails. However, they are more expensive.
Try 3/8” heat shrink tubing. It can be shrunk with a cigarette lighter and the hook isn’t limited to the one position like with the O ring.
Great tip - thanks!
Great idea, will go to the dollar store soon.
Super helpful sir! This is a great way to save a few bucks and a few worms also!

Wonderful idea!!! I'll make a video on that!
I use a toothpick to pull it through the eye of the hook...loop it on itself pull down attach to barb and there you you go. Toothpick works great to attach!
thanks! Do you just hook it over the barb from inside the hook or is there a wrap to cover the hook point better?
@@KayakhacksFishing I put it through the eye and pull it back like a slip knot then straight to the barb. It's not perfect but it works.
Thanks!
Clear shrink tube. Snip of a piece about a 1/4 wide slide on worm and apply just a bit of heat with heat gun. Very durable
Thanks for the idea!
Great idea. Thanks for sharing!
I use shrink tubing. It's tough and the fish usually tear the worm before the shrink tube will break.
I'll try some. Thanks

Also with that technique, small fish are must less likely to steal the worm, and the O rings themselves last much longer.
Thats how i do it with crossed rings it is much better i was losing fish with the hook parallel to the worm now that it crosses the worm even dinks are coming in when they grab it.
This is such a badass idea. Great vid
Awesome..will use this
Newbie here I'm just a work in progress learning the craft.
Question... Would a really tiny bag tie work or will the fish bust me? Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing this video.
You might lose your plastic with the tie, but the fish will still get hooked. A small zip tie will work as well.
I use heat shrink tubing... I cut 1/8" strips, put them on the worm, and shrink it down with a source of heat (lighter, heat gun, etc)
Great idea! Thanks!
Great idea!!!! 👍👍👍
Great video
I use those bands to prevent lures with treble hooks from tangling.
Interesting idea. How do you do that?
@@KayakhacksFishing I tie the treble hooks against each other with one rubber band and the over the lure. This will prevent them from tangling in your tackle box. I will like to send you a picture of how it looks.
Thanks! Send it to steve@kayakhacks.com

Watching now brother 👊
Nice suggestion 👍
Great, pony holders, for pony tails???
I think so!
Thanks. Looks great.
Amazing! I just hate the way the fishing industry takes a common item and marks it way up, especially kayak gear. Once again many thanks for another brilliant simple idea
Thanks! Appreciate it!
No. The bass will know you didn't pay 10 bucks for a week's supply, and they wont bite.
yep the fish don't need a high toleranced sealing ring both in regards to dimensions and material ...unlike plumbing/pneumatic equipment....so why pay for it? lol
Great video 😁
Thanks for good idea!
Works great
My problem with wacky worm o rings is there either dried and cracked or slide off to easy !!
Yep
u r the best. thx
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
I tried the bands but they melt off and are no good. Probably depends on the material of your senko, but I was using regular senkos, not any type of Elaztech or anything.
Wow. I use Case Plastics - no issue with them. I will try this on some other brands and see. Thanks for the heads up.
Buy o-rings at the hardware store very cheap. Or use a straw, or shrink tubing.been doing it for years.
Thanks for the additional options.
Thank you for the info good job and video 👍🇺🇸🤗
Great idea!
I'm going to try this rig in Australia on our bream
Let us know if it works!
I have heard of that trick and think it is pretty cool. I have not fished for gar on purpose, so have not tried it yet. Thanks!
That is pretty WACKY!
Fastenall is an excellent source of bulk O rings at a very reasonable price.
Thanks - I was looking for a source
Do you hook through the rubber bands or in the stick bait under the bands?
Just through the bands.
@@KayakhacksFishing okay good that should increase the life of the lure.
Cool!!!!😎😎😎👏👏👏
What's ponyholder? Is it a hair thing? I need to know where to look in the store.
Yes it is for when a girl braids her hair to use at the end so it doesnt come undone.. Will be by the hair brushes
Yep. Girl thing. Near all the hair stuff
One can buy actual O-rings for 6 cents each on AliExpress. That would be a little stronger than your hair bands. Thanks for the tip.
Cool!
Equate hair ties from walmart. Realistic Fishing uses those. I feel ripped off now for the wacky tool lol
You can also use the rubber bands for braces
Dang!. Not a freshwater fisherman. But this is a great video 👍
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
Silicon straws cost about a buck for 6. You can cut about 48 / straw. And you can get black and chartreuse.
Great idea! Do they stretch enough to go on the tool? I'll buy some.
Kayak Hacks Fishing I use a 3/8 deepwell socket for my tool and it’s stretched fine.
I looked for them yesterday and could not find the cheap ones. Do you remember where you got yours?
Kayak Hacks Fishing bought then at dollar tree got 5 or 6 for a buck.
They must not be in stock at mine. thx
Won’t the scent from the marker turn off the fish?
No, all the scent is in the tube with the ink. If you wanted, you could wash the inside of the marker to make sure.
This type of fishing is more of an instinct strike so the scent won't be an issue until the fish taste it with a hook in its lip!!!
How about a jumbo pack of tiny zip ties from harbor freight?
Those would work!
My son just had braces, so I am gonna try those rubber bands?????
They will work
Great tip but I discovered that not all rubber bands are created equal. I did a whole pack of senkos ahead of time with the dollar store pony ties and when I went to use them the rubber bands melted into a black gooey mess!
Ouch!
What is the purpose of the O-Ring?
The o-ring holds the hook as an alternative to putting the hook through the plastic worm. Doing the hook directly in the worm causes it to tear apart.
Better hack… 3/8” clear shrink wrap and a bic.
take an old ink pen take apart use one half to put 0rings on
Great idea! Thanks
The research lol
Honestly you can order 400 rings for 8$ on Amazon that are specifically designed for wacky rigging Senko or stickbaits. 7$ isn't going to set me back ever and I have aprox 390 more than I use anyways.

I started doing this last year after I bought thousands of them for my wife and daughters and then had no money for oil rings
I steal my grandkid’s retainers, but I don’t think it’s particularly cost-effective.
