I'm new to cross stitch and recently finished my first project by putting it into a hoop and sewing up the excess. It's not very pretty but it's functional. I'm definitely inspired to try to make a push in hoop butt for the next project!

I always finish my hoops by inserting batting and creating a disc from mount board covered with fabric which I stitch to the evenweave or aida fabric edge with a circular needle and invisible thread. If the project is very flat I sometimes glue it. It looks neat but your homemade butt method would be much less time consuming. Can't wait to try it! 💚

You could make a hoop butt using mountboard covered with fabric...so like you already do but just a bit smaller so you can push it inside the hoop instead of sewing or glueing it on. Let me know how it goes!
@@catkinandlillie Yes, that's exactly what I was planning. It will be a month or so as I am moving to live permanently in the UK (Norwich). A lot of my crafting supplies are packed. I have kept enough projects at hand, to be able to keep stitching through the mayhem 😅 BTW, I've stitched the lovely fox pattern I purchased from your shop and I am delighted with the finish 💚

Hello Kat! These hoop butts are a great idea and I also appreciate your suggestion about putting some felt and thin card in between the stitching and the butt! Thank you so much for making this video - I have been meaning to watch it for a while now but have only just got around to it, so apologies for that. I guess it comes from having recently completed Pipsqueak and his pumpkins (I tagged you in a photo of the finish on IG if you're interested in seeing him) so thank you for motivating me to get him done before the end of 2024! I now need to FFO him but that's the bit I'm not very good at doing. I guess I am slightly nervous of messing my project up at the final hurdle which probably sounds a bit daft but I want the finishing to look good when I have spent so much time on the stitching and don't want it to look like a dog's dinner! I guess that if I don't cut the fabric too close to the hoop then I could always remedy any mistakes as I'll have a bit of fabric to play with and I think I have some pretty papers in my stash that might complement Pipsqueak or the aida colour. You had better wish me luck though it is likely to be next week before I tackle it because I am leading the service at my church on Sunday morning and need to sort all that out first! Hope you and Dr Tim had a nice Christmas and best wishes for the coming year. Love Caron 💙

I am sure the hoop butt finish will be great for it, and I totally understand the nervousness of wanting to do justice to your beautiful stitching and hard work! I actually couldn’t work out in my mind how to do it myself! I tried hot glue gun and hurt my fingers, struggled with trying to get a running stitch in, but the cardboard and pattern paper I have loads off, thank you for showing this ❤
Oh no Pops, I was wincing at the thought of your poor fingers and the hot glue gun😩 I don't think I could be trusted with one of those 😬 Cardboard and paper is much safer for me! And great when you have a stash of pretty paper too 😄

Kat, I learnt that the inner circle of Nurge hoops have a notch / line on one side. This mark is to aligned both outer and inner hoops in the correct position. The mark should be at the top in the middle of the opening of the outer hoop. Apparently hoops are not quite round. In chapter 13.51 the hoop on the left shows this mark on the inner hoop. I have wondered why this information is not given with purchase. Thank you for this content.
I would be very interested if you could let me know where you came across this information. I tried searching for references to this and couldn't find anything, not even on the Nurge website. I see that the inner ring has a slight line on it at one point but this looks to me just like where the 2 ends of the piece of wood meet to create the circle. I have never found any issues with hoops not meeting correctly when the inner and outer rings are placed together, other than one that I believe had been stored in a damp environment and had become warped.
I would love to join one of the stich along but I'm not how to stich without a pattern like you right on a plane fabric. So do they come with pattern as well
If it's an official Stitch-a-long (SAL) then you can usually buy either a full kit which comes with plain fabric, threads, a needle and the pattern, or buy just the pattern. There are lots of unofficial SALs where groups of people stitch something together and that might be the same pattern or maybe just on a theme or a pattern by a specific designer. So, it varies but you would always be working from a pattern and not making it up as you go. I haven't ever seen any with the pattern stamped on the fabric though, only counted cross stitch worked on blank fabric from a pattern.
I have learned so much from you by watching your video's. I would like to try this with my first finished stamped cross stitch. I was wondering the thickness of your Nurge hoop. I found 8 mm and 24 mm Nurge hoops on Amazon.

I only learned about this finishing technique fairly recently...and its' sooooo good! Perfect for a scrapbooker too; you already have the supplies!
