Having problems myself. I’ve done everything right, made sure we’re updated with the latest software, have tried restarting the phones, deleting my child then re-adding her, but I can’t get the parental controls to even begin working. I've looked it up and apparently this has been a very common problem for *years*. Was hoping to find help, but I'm not feeling confident.

To everyone commenting about not trusting your children or saying that the reason kids sneak out is because their parents are too strict: I was once a child with no restrictions. I got in trouble multiple times for sneaking out and having fun with my friends, and I misunderstood, thinking my parents didn’t love me. I became a mother at a young age.
Now that I have children, I understand the restrictions and frustrations my parents felt back then. One day, when you become a parent, you’ll realize why some parents lose trust in their children or feel the need to set limits. There’s a saying: what goes around comes around.
Also, this isn’t about not trusting our children; it’s about not being able to trust the world we live in now. There are predators on the internet, on the roads-predators everywhere. As parents who love our children deeply, we don’t want to take chances with their safety. If you choose not to set restrictions for your children, that’s your decision. My word to you is, “Good luck” raising your child with no limits.

Hi Family Tech, thanks for this video!
I've just set up my 8 year old child to the parental control system and set up the app approval option. This works well with any app that is suitable for her age but with apps that are for older kids, like 12 year old, she can't even ask for permission, the app is automatically blocked, is there any way to overrule this restriction?

All a kid has to do is go into screen time under their profile and click change screen time passcode, then turn off screen time passcode, and here is where apple messed up, if Apple would have just allowed the 4 digit pin to be required instead of using the screen lock passcode to perform this action this would not be a problem. In order to keep the phone secure a screen lock code must be setup. This is something the kid needs to know, otherwise everytime the phone locks they will be asking for the phone to be unlocked, so annoying. A simple fix for Apple to make, but they are so smart and they know what their doing. Making screen time useless.

Go to Settings > Screen Time.
Tap App Limits, then tap Add Limit.
Select one or more app categories. ...
Tap Next, then set the amount of time allowed. ...
When you finish setting limits, tap add.
      You can also use "downtime"
With Downtime, you can block apps and notifications for specific periods when you want time away from your devices, or when you want to schedule time away for your child. When you schedule downtime, only phone calls and apps that you choose to allow are available. Downtime applies to all of your Screen Time enabled devices, and you get a reminder five minutes before it starts.
If you set a Screen Time passcode, Downtime includes an additional setting, Block At Downtime. When you choose this setting and you select Ask For More Time when Downtime starts, entering the passcode allows you to approve the app for 15 minutes, an hour, or all day. For child accounts, your child can select One More Minute once, or click Ask For More Time to send their request to the parent or guardian account for approval.

Phones are dangerous to the mind of a child. When she gets to the age of 18, sure she will leave and thats fine, one day she will have kids and see for her self. I'm searching for a solution for my 12 year old, don't want any browsers, social media, or Wi-Fi hotspot abilities. Right now I'm leaning towards a Sunbeam F1 feature phone but it doesn't seam to have gps tracking abilities for the parent. I have a series 6 (cellular) apple watch I could repurpose if it is a decent solution. My kid is clever about getting around parental (and even chromebook school IT) controls.

Your internet provider can show you search history even after it’s been deleted. All messages, even deleted ones, are available upon request from phone provider. Snapchat and TikTok will provide you with complete logs of who your child has been in contact with, messages, and every video they view. For a 10 year old, monitor all of this without them knowing. If they are on snapchat or TikTok get them off immediately. The amount of explicit content on TikTok is unbelievable and snapchat could expose your child to predators and could even expose their location to random people if they have that setting on.

@@HCK_Cat_ In my case, the controls started working roughly the way I hoped they would work about a day later. There was a delay. One possible explanation for the delay was that his phone wasn't connected to mobile service yet when I initially set it up and tested the controls. Your mileage may vary. I used his correct age, which was 14. One thing that wasn't clear from this video and other resources I found, is that some control procedures have to be managed on the kid's phone and some on your phone.

Because after selecting it they can press 'forgot passcode' and then 'forgot apple password' and then change the Apple ID password after an one hour delay, which will might give control of the screen time feature.

So i did this with my child, but on their screentime on their phone, they still have the option to "turn off screen time family sharing" which negates the whole system. Any solutions to that?

You don't need an iPhone to iPhone. It can be easier. But you can get a plan through your cell provider and works the same.

@@nadirnazim9342 oh interesting. I spent 10+ yrs using Family Link and I find iPhone screen time way easier to manage my teen’s devices, once I figured it all out. We both love it. Specially the features of asking for more time on an app and the ability to communicate all around after downtime with the contacts I select.

They're all going to the Messages app on my MacBook instead. I'd like to get them back on my iPhone, but I couldn't find any settings for that. Any ideas?
