(EDITED BECAUSE I FORGOT WHAT I SAID AND I HOPE I DIDNT SAY ANYTHING STUPID) I think a lot of people don't understand that unless you are exposed to public servers to join outside of Discord or getting DMed one, you can't join a server. Your Discord will basically stay completely private with no messages if you don't friend ANYBODY or join any servers. I think Discord is fine if the child is only in servers created by real life friends, and you're monitoring servers very occasionally. Also, you can block certain links and disable messages from non friends.
@@mcshow8121 Please see my edited comment. People don't need to be a parent to understand which apps are safe and which are not, you just need to be aware of the every risk. A lot of people who review apps and websites on their safeness for children aren't actually that familiar with how they work. A lot of people think you can just immediately start joining servers directly from Discord with a blank account. Also, I do not suggest letting kids under 13 use it at all. This is just if you're concerned about how safe it would be.
Pinterest doesn't allow any kind of adult content. I am very positive about that. I've used it for years. I have no idea what family tech is talking about.
The point is being mindful of sites where you can skirt around the rules or are not easily known for harmful content for kids. Tumblr for example has some pornographic content.
That’s assuming ur kids can tell who is or isn’t a predator! Some of those predators are so good at throwing kids off the scent and pretending to be a friend or a like-minded person! Predators don’t wear a banner saying they are ‘predators’ lol.
@@thinktankcritic5267 I guess it would depend on how young or how "naive" your child is, but most teens have the ability to know when something feels... off. Creeps on discord and other apps are usually *very* easy to spot. I would say the chances of a predator that comes off as "a friend or a like-minded person" are very low and this comes from someone who has spent years dealing with strangers on the internet. Most likely if you catch your kid talking to a creep on the internet, the kid knows exactly what they're doing. They know they aren't talking to a saint. We aren't that stupid.
@@bellarae7965 sure. But it’s not just about that! It’s easy enough to spot them let’s say, but it’s the content they could expose the child to! It’s irreversible! Ok I must be dense. Help needed! And your channel is amazing. I tried the OpenDNS thing. Everything seemed to be going smoothly but when I attempted to look at a site that should have been blocked, it let me right in. I think I might be having IP address issues. So my network is a Netgear cable modem (no WiFi) and connected to that is our Google mesh Wifi system. When I went into the OpenDNS settings, I used the IP address (WAN IP) of the primary google mesh pod. That said, I wasn’t entirely sure if it was a static or dynamic IP. I tried it both ways. Saved the settings. No errors. But again, nothing was being blocked as it should have been. Then I got to thinking, should I have used the IP of the Netgear cable modem itself, which of course is the first stop in the WiFi chain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
