Avery stated that he is my Great Uncle. If you see Avery and Sidney side by side, you can see that they are definitely related! Avery stated that he met his famous uncle once at a family reunion.

It was a wholesome movie. He didn't have an affair with her or any other student. He just taught them about life and how to prepare for adulthood the right way. Much like Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds from the 90's. To Sir With Love was the OG Classic version of that. Her song is basically just thanking him for doing what he was supposed to do as a teacher - prepare them for life afterwards.

    • @russallert

The movie was also a twist on Blackboard Jungle from the 50s, in which Sidney Poitier played one of the "bad" students in a class taught by Glenn Ford's character, and was the first "rock & roll movie" (Rock Around The Clock was the theme song). A decade later in To Sir With Love, Poitier was essentially playing Ford's character, plus being a black man teaching a white class was a commentary on the times (civil rights).

The music biz (ha!) Is so totally driven by money and product these days. Almost everything is computerized and few people write most pop songs so its cookie cutter crap. And the younger bands make almost no money because of streaming. Meanwhile, concert prices plus handling charges are insane and now the damn record companies want some of the money for t shirts or and promo items from the band. So I paid 14 bucks back in the day for a record but concert tickets cost 6 to 9 bucks, parking was a couple of bucks and very low handling fees. I'm not a fan of Taylor but she does have a good business sense. Maybe her pissed off fans can help take down ticket master/ Live nation. It's ridiculous.

And in the 1960's when Lulu was singing this song, an awful lot of older Americans were saying HOW THE CURRENT MUSIC WAS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE MUSIC OF THEIR DAY.

@@keng4847 "...were saying HOW THE CURRENT MUSIC WAS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE MUSIC OF THEIR DAY." Not as much, by this time. Early '50s Rock and Roll with "You ain't nothing but a Hound Dog", "Great Balls of Fire" and "Tutti Fruti" were taking a lot of hits from the older generation. But Rock and Pop had gotten a whole lot more mature by the mid-sixties. With the Beatles and Sgt. Pepper, even some classical music fans were coming on board.

This is the title song to the 1967 movie of the same name. Lulu was in the film with Sidney Poitier - she got the gig after director James Clavell saw her open a show for The Beach Boys. At first she had just a small role in the movie, but Clavell was so impressed with her that he expanded her role and had her sing the theme. The film stars Poitier as a high school teacher who has a big impact on his unruly students. Lulu plays one of his students, and sings this song to him at the end of the film as the students show their appreciation for the teacher.
Lulu is a charismatic Scottish singer known for her moving rendition of this song. She was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Laurie (one source cites "Lawrie" as the spelling). She also sang the title song for the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. From 1969 to 1973, Lulu was married to pop star Maurice Gibb. >>
This was Billboard's single of the year for 1967, having been #1 for five weeks in the USA. However in Lulu's native UK it was only ever a B-side to her #11 hit "Let's Pretend."

When Columbia Pictures executives saw the film they did'nt like it so the film was given very little advertising. Word of mouth made the film a world wide hit. In New York it played for month's. From this film onward everyone new who "Sir" was. When President Obama, presented Sydney Poitier with the medal of Honour he was introduced as Sir. If you find the time you should watch the film. It can still tug a heart string to this day. Cheers, Chris Perry.

I had the privilege to meet Lulu a few years ago at Glastonbury Festival here in Somerset, England. I was stage managing on a nearby smaller stage and went to help out at the larger Avalon stage. She was wonderful, although her entourage wouldn't allow any photos/selfies. As she was going up the steps to get on stage, she turned to me, waved and winked. I melted on the spot.

Just an incredible beautiful song. I fell in love with it as a kid and didn't know the name of it until almost 20 years later! Love the song!! The strings in the song are fantastic!

Apologies if someone already said this: This song is from the film “To Sir With Love,” 1967. It stars Sidney Poitier as a new teacher coming in midway through the year into an inner city London school full of poor and out of control kids everyone has given up on. The kids are mostly White and Poitier is their new Black teacher, it was a time in the UK where there was a lot of violent racism. The kids are horrible to “Sir,” they are racist, they threaten him etc… But he persists and doesn’t give up on them. It starts t have an effect on the kids who have never had anyone care about them or assume they could accomplish something. Lulu plays one of the students and Sir helps her discover an interest in learning and she shows her the courage to not be afraid to admit she is smart. At the graduation party, the kids give Sir a gift and surprise him with Lulu singing this song to him… I’m tearing up writing this… The film is wonderful. As a half Black half White kid, my mum made me watch it when I was a kid and it had a big effect on me.

Lulu wasn’t the girl with the crush on the teacher. It was actress Judy Geeson. There was nothing inappropriate going on. Simply a schoolgirl crush. He changed their lives from a rowdy bench of unmanageable kids, into responsible young people and they came to love and respect him. One of my favourite movies ever. R.I.P. Sidney Poitier.

Not falling in love, learning to respect him as their teacher. They gave him a hard time in the beginning but he wouldn't stand for it. He gave them respect and in turn they learned to respect him. He taught them all how to live a good life and have the tools to survive. Simple things like taking care of themselves, being clean and put together. Learning how to cook etc.

Lulu was just 18 years old when she did this song and when it was released she had turned 19 she was the girl wearing the purple top in the film and it is a must see movie such great acting and a very good theme truly befitting a real Hollywood acting master up there with all the greats of the past and a genuine nice person who never stopped fighting for his fellows against tyranny and being classed as second class citizens a true legend both on and off the screen RIP Sir.

The movie was NOT about a romantic love. It was high school kids who were rebellious and the teacher who taught them to fit in with society. The kids were amhry that nobody was treating them like adults. He set up rules in his class where they must treat each others as adu.ts but to defer to him as the teacher. The kids kept the rules outside of class and suddenly they were respected by the adults. He became the teacher who taught them to be adults. Any love in the movie was the appropriate kind.

Many of you may not know - this is based on a real life story. The character’s name is E.R.Braithwaite and he wrote his biography and this movie was based on that. I watched this movie while in school - we had a chapter from the book as an English lesson. Fantastic movie and makes me think of my teachers with gratitude whenever i listen to this song.

This song always reminds me, of being a young boy in primary school in NZ in the 1960s, and having a 'progressive' teacher, who taught us to read between the lines, of any conversation, about how gossip changed so much in 1 classroom amongst 20 students. Then most importantly to look to the 4 corners of the universe, where anything at all, is possible.
Crayons to perfume? Maybe not, but physics is a whole new story of intrigue. This song is amongst only about 4, that still brings a tear to my eye..... See your Mom loving this song, great to see the lady back here again. 😶‍🌫 🤫😁

In the movie, it wasn't LuLu's character who falls in [romantic] love with "Sir" the teacher (Sidney Poitier) but the whole class he was teaching. There is a suggestion that one of the other girls (the 'cute' one) was developing a romantic interest in him, but the theme of the movie is that the whole class fell in love with him because of the model of behavior he had given them. It was really a wonderful movie you should watch!!
