- An edited down version of the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 in Stockholm with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lockdown project.
This edit will give a flavour of the evening (13th May) with Terry Wogan’s commentary. Thank you to Joris Peters for getting in touch and getting me the full Wogan performance - it’s very much appreciated!
After being pleased to be able to provide Terry, I instantly cut him out of the best opening to a Contest ever. I would have thought it would have been better for the director’s notes to say that commentators shouldn’t speak during it - Wogan rabbiting all the way through rather ruined the effect. The execution of the opening, I read, was a last-minute addition to the show.
Now, I’ve had to use a slightly sulky title as the copyright owners and 2000 don’t get on. If I left my edit un-clipped, it wouldn’t be seen by 70% of my viewers, and the culprit: the winner. A real shame.
What’s annoying is that there’s some songs this year which should have been blocked for reasons of exceptional poor quality. I began to think that there were technical issues in Globen - so many performances were vocally flat! That said, the quality of the uploads of 2000 is generally lower, so maybe it’s some VHS wonkiness creeping through.
I am also annoyed that I wasn’t able to make it to a betting shop in May 2000. Denmark were being offered at 125/1…150/1 at one point in the UK! Perhaps I’m overusing the benefit of hindsight, but a record audience size and an anthemic, genuine performance was always going to be successful, especially when offset by some rather lightweight performances elsewhere. The use of the audience lights and the fake pyrotechnics showed that the Swedish directors felt this was the winner too, I think.
Going into the Contest, the biggest known star was Nicki French. But that’s where the advantage stopped. An awful running order position, plus a dated song and off-kilter dress sense would send the UK to their worst performance so far. We just didn’t know it could get any worse! I think there’s a few others that missed the boat too, Malta being one - great song…wrong year. I think Norway’s in there too, but fared much better at the hands of the Baltic obsessed televoters.
Overall though, the production was excellent. Great presenters, and a snappy show - both in duration and look…
DESIGN AND THE BOARD
2000 is a personal favourite of mine - mainly because I think we see a scoreboard (and a Contest) that has design at its centre. The logo isn’t a corporate collection of shapes…it’s a mouth - sensual and overbearing in it’s placing and size. Offset by the rigid typeface which is the first to be especially designed for the Contest, it’s a shame it wasn’t adopted as the permanent logo in 2004.
1998-99 saw a skeuomorphic approach - coins that looked like coins, stars that flew and landed where they needed to be. 2000 was different, not scared to take risks with replacing smooth motion with jolted flashing. The viewer is left to fill a bit of the gap…there’s nothing obvious about it, other than it’s rigidity. The map was bent nearly out of recognition, which meant it was heavily styled, but still useful. Using it dramatically at the beginning of the sequence was a nice touch - I love how the names of the countries transitioned seamlessly from map to scoreboard too.
It felt like a natural step to evolve the ‘?’ theme used at the beginning and use an inbuilt plugin of Viz Artist that randomises text build up. My board leans heavily on the original but has had a slight rebuild. Unlike all the others, countries don’t move…the text reorders itself to reveal the new entrant to be placed in that slot. Think airport departure boards.
I certainly went through the same process (I expect) as the 2000 designers. I found a typeface called SchoonSquare (Michiel van Kleef) which felt near to the custom typeface used, but then needed a rounder typeface to offset it…I settled on the beautiful Nurom by The Northern Block.

A few other things I couldn’t fit in the description:
- Firstly, the odd bits in the scoreboard. Although the top 3 settle very quickly, the interesting race is mid-table. At one point, during the Norwegian voting, five countries are on 16 points. For some reason, and I haven’t worked out how yet, Germany is awarded 3 points and Malta swaps place. I can only think this is something to do with an animation not firing, but everything else looks correct. If I find out the cause, I’ll let you know.
- The second odd bit is to do with the CanYouWin function that greys out the countries that can no longer win. I spent most of my Sunday wondering what was wrong with the board during the German voting. Austria is ruled out, but everyone else below them is still in. I think at that point, Austria is doubly disadvantaged because it’s had a vote awarded this round AND still has to cast it’s vote, meaning it has one less chance compared to most of the others below it. The board waits in case the countries below Austria get awarded a 12 and therefore won’t update until the 12 is placed at the end of the round…for Austria the round ended when it got the 2 from Germany.
- The board also highlighted another oddity during Finland’s vote…Latvia are still in the competition, and are awaiting a 12. I gets it…but then the 12 knocks them out. To my mind, they should have already been discounted if 12 wasn’t enough. I might have to review when the CanYouWin function is run - it hasn’t been a problem up until now, so maybe it’s to do with me tinkering with the build. We get the right result at the end of each round anyway!
- Aside from my bugs…the pre-Contest Internet polling was way off, wasn’t it! What a great first sign that internet chat rooms might not be where the winner is decided. - A nice moment that a 12 being awarded for the host by the Turkish jury is the thing that makes Denmark win.
- So many lovely bits in the production, especially the postcards, which I thought were artfully produced…the classiest yet (although I think 2001 might pip them). The strongest was the UK one I think, and the Netherlands. I can only assume the spokespeople were urged not to build up their parts? Compared to 1999, the voting is super snappy. The presenters were great, if not a little cheesy at times. The edit of past Contests shown during one of the breaks was wonderful too.
- I particularly enjoyed the rail cam sliding through the ornaments hanging from the Globen ceiling, very nice touch.
- I think Turkey developed as my personal favourite through the editing. It’s a shame that they went on to win with something that was more commercial…but then, that’s exactly how they won in 2003. For two years in a row my personal favourites have been in line with French televoters?!
- I think I would have preferred to have moved the ‘Relegation’ flags (the little arrows) away from the country names. This all came from me using Schoon Square for all text at first, and neatly ‘gridding up’ everything very close to each other. The result was that you couldn’t read much at all…I missed separating everything out a bit more once I adopted Nurom.
- I’ve folded in the deduction in marks for Croatia for using a male voice in the backing track in Jerusalem. The board now works out Croatia’s relegation position based on them getting 79 points in 1999, not the 118 the voters gave them. This would have no effect on Croatia since the system was about to be chucked anyway.
- Love that Nicki French felt that the UK’s performance might have been down to us not being in the Euro. The currency was very much the hot political topic in the UK, and the election of 2001 featured it heavily. I love Nicki, mainly because of her great attitude and clear love for the Contest and the experience she had in Stockholm. For Greece, joining the Euro in 2000 was very much going to develop into a more serious problem.
- Worth noting that the Yugoslav wars were really coming to an end in 2000. Milošević was booted out by the people after opposition leader Ivan Stambolić was murdered…most likely ordered by the President. The revolution would pave the way to Serbia & Montenegro re-joining the international community and, to Eurovision. Especially worth noting here, as it was in Sweden in 1992 that they last competed.
- The video, with not so much clipping, may appear on another well known video sharing site next week.
And now people think UK's poor performance is due to Brexit... *massive sigh*

Indeed it was an excellent show, probably the beggining of ESC as we know it nowdays: big stadium, cheerful audience, modern stage and graphic design... (although 1998 had a bit of all that too). I just missed that year the flags in the scoreboard, so thank you for adding them :)
And I agree about the logo, I've always loved it because it's simple but meaningful, and what a nice touch was to keep it on stage with the colours of the current performing country! By thw way, I thought I was the only one enjoying the camera playing around the roof ornaments, haha!
And about your reorder board, I think you did the perfect work that was needed to improve the original one without breaking its original concept!, love it!
Myledbury.co.uk is excellent for at-the-time reports of the late 1990s, early 2000s contests. Also, the official rules of many of these contests are there too, and they make interesting reading.
Most notable for me is that the rules at the time permitted participating broadcasters to repeat the contest as much as they liked for 28 days after the contest. The BBC and RTÉ have never taken advantage of this...and I would have thought in a pre-RUclips time, there would be some demand for a repeat, maybe on a Sunday afternoon. It does appear however that the now-defunct BBC Choice repeated the 2002 contest the Wednesday after the contest.
Regarding the CanYouWin function, it is correct regarding Germany’s 2 points to Austria. However, I think during Finland’s vote, it should have grayed out when Denmark received 10. It probably is a misfiring of the animation probably...

Really sad to see all Dutch people at the time the contest organised, they had to focus the serious news about the explosion of firework in a local town.

Loukas Hamatsos of Cyprus was the only spokesperson of this year to return in 2016, the next time the contest was in Globen and Stockholm. In both years, he got to award 12 points to Russia in Greece's absence.

SVT actually created a new font for this years competition - once used and never again.
Amazing scoreboard... specially the reorder "shuffle"... very nice done... You really got the feeling of that years contest... I remember I was sitting far back in the arena.. my first Eurovision (and on home soil)... oddly I would see another danish victory 13 years later... (Is that why I only got to three ESCs? Denmark didn´t compete in 2003 so they couldn´t win there... my only abroad)
The Croatian entry is probably the song from that year I hear the most today.
I was 9yo when I could see the clouds of the disaster in Enschede, never had been there before but felt very close. Good call to not broadcast it that day.
Great showing of your talent once again! Although the animation isn't the one I am most fan of, I once again praise you for a terrific job. Your point about the phenomenal intro to the contest is very interesting ; I remember that curiously, in France, we didn't get to any of the "pre-nordic girl' section with the lips telling all the country names in English and French. France 3 just opened it with the girl saying "Welcome Europe" and then the commentator back then started talking after the "explosion" from the crowd. I do believe it's about as much a shame as Terry ruining the opening for UK viewers talking through it cause I also believe that it is by far and still to this day the best opening to a contest ever. I mean can such an opening be topped tbf? I guess it would take quite a stroke of genius creativity to top that off. I almost feel like it's fascinating we never came close to making such a memorable opening again over 20 years on. The only other openings that I can remember of and that were quite something though standing very far behind 2000 would be Helsinki 2007 and Copenhagen 2014.

While Kattis came across warm and friendly during the contest, I always thought she seemed not very pleasant at all when she returned to Eurovision in 2003 to present the Swedish votes.

The thing is with Kattis is that I find she is rather nervous here in 2000. In 2003, she was less nervous but a lot more cold, I thought - a stark contrast to her bubbly yet nervous nature in display here..

The first eurovision I watched was 2001, I'm excited about it :D
This was the first Eurovision I followed the organization from beginning to end. I remember the impact when announced that the contest will be on Globe Arena and comments on the forums at the time and people asking things like, "Is it really that big"? "Why an arena on this size?" Well, the comments on May 14 were completely different. They raised the bar, Denmark wanted to compete with Sweden in 2001 and got lost.

I was wondering why the Dutch presenter was a little cryptic about the change from televoting to jury voting. Apparently it was because of the Enschede fireworks disaster (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enschede_fireworks_disaster) which Dutch TV chose to focus on rather than showing Eurovision (understandably).
the contest aired the next day on same time. As it was a reason of force majeure, EBU authorized the 100% jury and the delayed transmission of the contest, which until today is not allowed for the participating countries.
To paraphrase Terry on the Dublin-based postcards of 1994:
It’s only been Stockholm in these postcards! No Gothenburg, Malmo, Uppsala - the rest of the country will be furious!
The contest was sponsored by the city hall. In addition, 3/4 of Sweden's population lives in Stockholm.

In internet polls, they were the first ones, I think the Spice Girls legacy was still alive, but the rehearsals were disastrous and the live was much worse than the sinking of the Titanic.

Kattis Ahlström dealt with the Israeli, UK, French, Maltese, Russian, Belgian, Icelandic, Spanish, Swiss, Swedish, Finnish, Turkish and Austrian votes. Anders Lundin dealt with the Dutch, Estonian, Romanian, Norwegian, Cypriot, Danish, German, Croatian, Macedonian, Latvian and Irish votes.
The contest was held on my first birthday! Good winner, like the other songs that won on my birthday ("Nocturne" won on my -4th, "Amar pelos dois" on my 18th). My favorite, though, would probably be Latvia, a very sweet little song that set up a trend for the rest of the decade of quirky/quieter songs doing better than expected (Belgium in '03, Cyprus in '04, Latvia again in '05, etc.). Also one of those years where even a country you'd normally ride or die for sends a song you couldn't find a way of defending. There are two of those countries for me (for different reasons), and in the same way that "Chain of Lights" is the one entry from San Marino I can't really find a way to defend ("The Social Network Song" comes close), "Sameach" is the one Israeli entry that I can't find a single redeeming quality about. Doesn't work as satire, doesn't work as music, doesn't work as anything. There are other Israeli entries I don't love quite as much as the others ('89, '93, '06, and '11 don't rank high for me), but that's the only really miserable one that comes to mind.
Sameach also affirms what I know about Israeli entries--the good ones are absolutely fantastic, whereas the bad ones are irredeemable. Also interesting you mention My Star as a favorite, because what I said about Israel could also apply to Latvian Eurovision entries.
@@EldaMengisto Even the worst Israeli entries besides "Sameach" don't make my soul hurt the way that one does. And yeah, that's true about Latvia, but no matter what they do there's at least a sort of "happy to be there" kind of chipperness about their entries.

What will you do after you did 2002? - Going back to 1979?
I'm going to take a break at first, and I think timing will be handy because it'll be when most of the 2021 pre-selection is happening (I know it's quieter this year). Then I'm going to try and make sense of the early Contests, and hoepfully make them a bit more accessible. I'm looking forward to that!

The male host couldn't speak french to save his life! Unlucky for him, the country that was leading the whole time and thus was mentioned all the time during voting, Denmark, is one of the few exceptions that require "le" as an article but he kept saying la Denmark. What a mess! Anyway, great work with the scoreboard! Russia was my favourite in 2000, performance was silly though, imo it would've been much better had they had female dancers.

I like the transition from the original scoreboard to the one you have! I like the large points on the top right corner, along with the color-scheme. On the other hand, the way the points went up and down was quite messy, but I understand the concept behind it. I also like how you introduced the internet polls about who fans think would win--what were they thinking with 100% te ljubam?
Anyways, 2000 was a solid year, filled with great production and a couple of fun hosts. The songs are pretty good, at least in comparison with the years surrounding it (1999, 2001-02). I'm surprised how Fly On the Wings of Love overcame the odds to win it all, but they definitely deserved it!
On a sidenote, why do you think the lips logo would've made a good permanent logo from 2004 onwards?

1 pt: MLT
2 pt: FRA (One minute silence for the French televote giving Israel six of their seven points. That said, On aura le ciel deserved a bit better).
3 pt: NOR
4 pt: ISL
5 pt: TUR
6 pt: DEN
7 pt: CRO (Beautiful song, and thoughtful lyrics, but the woman in the background kind of creeped me out.)
8 pt: RUS - This is where Russia starts taking Eurovision seriously (even though I loved their 1994 and 1997 entries), with a pop song that wouldn't have gotten lost on the radio during that time. I found it very slick, as well as a bit assertive with Alsou leaving her partner in the lyrics.
10 pt: LAT - Welcome to the party, Latvia! It's still kind of weird that Lithuania and Estonia managed to debut in 1994, but Latvia took another six years to do so. But it was worth it. Renars' performance style was a bit strange, but it compliments the whimsical song very well. I love how happy-go-lucky it is and the almost surrealistic lyrics.
12 pt: SWE - But my favorite has to be the host entry! It's so epic and determined, with a rousing sound and a good use of ethnic elements. The usage of Native American symbols and elements are a bit jarring, but it makes sense considering the lyrical content and Roger's heritage. Quite a few people commented on how the Swedish version was better, but I don't feel any difference--it's just so cool!
Take a look at the Maltese backing group. They are the same backing group who backed the Swedish winner of the previous year, Take Me to your Heaven. One of the members is Anna Sahlin, who would place third for Estonia in 2002 with Runaway. Also, allegedly this backing group were promised a free holiday to Malta had they won (which they, Estonia or Norway really should have imo), though I’m not sure how true that claim is?
It’s interesting to see how much Wogan still loved the Eurovision, even as late as 2000. Copenhagen and Riga worked overtime to piss on that sentiment though.

Exceptional work, as always. Maybe this time even more than the last times, as you managed to make this contest enjoyable even If I can't stand it for several reason (it set unfortunate stands for the at least the nest 7/8 contests like too-huge-too-loud venues, cringy scripts for the hosts, extremely out of tune performers, extremely cheap musical compositions and so on...) ;)
Like 2011 and a few other years, it's an interesting mismatch of the host country being super on top of the production values but most of the countries involved just pissing it away.
I love how Jørgen Olsen says to his team "Fra England! Fra England!" after the UK votes... he's so pleased that the British public like them ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

It was a custom typeface built specially for the occasion.
For the first time in the history of the contest, an edition had a visual language developed exclusively for the event. They won an unbelievable amount of design awards between 2000 and 2001.
What font did you use for the numbers?

Is it just me, or does Millenium of Love (🇮🇪’s entry) have a more-than-passing resemblance to La Voix Est Libre (🇧🇪’s entry from 1995).

And said she did very well but it didn't translate well at other countries.

Kattis and Anders have an ever-so-slight resemblance to Cynthia and Gerry from 1994. Kattis and Cynthia very professional, Anders and Gerry slightly silly with French as good as mine (in the case of Gerry, slightly incompetent too...)

Anyone who knows a thing or two about betting - why were the Estonian odds written as 6/4 and not 3/2?
I have checked this - it's a mixture of function and tradition it seems. 6/4 allows bookmakers to shift the price more easily compared to starting at 3/2 - 6/4 can turn to 7/4 and it not seem like an entirely different price. There's also some prices that are related to tic-tak (the now often not used sign language seen at race courses). 100/30 is often not shortened to 10/3 either...it has a special sign in the language.

What Scandinavian mafia? Besides, Sweden deserved to win the previous year in 1999 (though really Iceland should have won) and Denmark deserved the win in 2000 (though really Norway should have won). Then again, that’s just my opinion...

Out of interest, why are FYR Macedonia using a jury here when they used the televote back in 1998?
They changed the criteria for using the televote and the local televote did not reach the minimum number of calls to be computed.

While I like the postcards, I do feel they are too obvious and in-your-face (by writing on the screen what it is - you miss the fun of Terry Wogan trying to work out what is going on). I do prefer the postcards from 1998 though. With reference to the postcards from 2001, I didn’t like them, until the final (Danish) postcard - my opinion of them has changed since seeing the final postcard

This may turn into another video where I comment a lot. Multiple bad vocals this year. Israel in particular. Macedonia the most disappointing as they actually had a decent song but butchered it with the vocals. Netherlands not too great either in terms of vocals.
Even back then, Israel tried to block that joke of a song from appearing. It was too late without recieving a hefty fine from the EBU.
The selection process itself was performed by the wrong people who were very indifferent. One of the people selecting the song actually said that she took part in the selection because she heard there was "free lunch".
Hence, the result.
Rehearsal they say the scores. All commentators know .Results. so Now Wogan your not Cynical.

This was another contest I missed the first 20 minutes of because I had to go to mass. Perils of growing up in Ireland.
And what a dreadful entry Ireland had this year. Nicknamed “Millennium of Cheese” by quite a few people here. And yet it did so well!! For no good reason.
But to parrot what many here have said, it was a year of weak songs and weak performances and so it probably did better than it would have in a stronger year.
Shame it was a weak song year, because it was a bombastic presentation, setting the standard for the 21st century.
But what the 21st century also brought in was poorer songs. There’s a definite dip in quality, beginning around 1999, and things only pick up again around 2005.
No one predicted a Danish win this year. From my recollection, the online fandom was all about the Netherlands entry. Not to be, and the fandom for the second year got it completely wrong.
Along with Netherlands, the smart money seemed to be on Estonia. And Once in a Lifetime would have been a far more worthy winner than the song they would win with a year later.
I do recall both Estonia and Netherlands lost some momentum as the contest approached (Netherlands had a bad running order position and outfit, and the story from rehearsals was that poor Ines was a nervous wreck on stage.)
So when the contest began, it really was so open.

I agree with your thoughts regarding a dip in song quality. I personally don’t think it ever truly picked up since 1997/98, despite a few anomalies across the road. Besides, I feel this was certainly one of the best ESCs of C21st - certainly one of the best contests in a very long time.
I really don’t see the appeal behind the Netherlands’ entry. But absolutely behind Estonia’s entry. I also think Norway and Malta should have done _much_ better than they eventually did. And I mean, *much* better.
@@JeSuisRene interestingly (or maybe not) at the same time as Norway were at Eurovision singing “My heart goes boom” a group called French Affair were having a Europe-wide hit (not the U.K. though, but it did make the Irish top 20) with a song called...”My heart goes boom.” I don’t know how often it has happened that a song doing well in the charts has the same name as a Eurovision entry competing in the contest at the same time.

You're right that there's a hole in my description of returnees...although I did mention in my 1999 description that money trouble in Budapest meant they gave their place in Jerusalem to Portugal. What I didn't explicitly say is that this would lead to a longer spell away from the Contest (to 2005). I'm not really sure what would happen to a country if they qualify but sit out...yes their place goes to the next in line of average scores, but would they automatically qualify to enter 2000? I suppose so....in this case it just wasn't tested.
@@thereorderboard I think the rule under the “average score over the last five contests” system was that no country should ever be made miss two consecutive contests. So I guess if they had done their penance and sat out 1999 then the door would be open to a return either the next year or in subsequent years. The closest comparison is Greece, who like Hungary were kicked out in 1999 and could have returned in 2000, but didn’t. They then returned in 2001, and I’m guessing they were given an automatic slot.
They changed this rule on this year.Russia was expected to comeback in 1999,but due internal constrains about the national selection they don't compete in Jerusalem.Was expect to see Hungary in 1999 and 2000 but this doesn't happened,as the fees to pay on the contest on that time was proportional about the size of each country's population.

One of the weakest years, I liked Turkey best. Israel and Belgium were horrifically bad! At the time I thought this was the worst Eurovision not knowing worse was to come the next year!
Some more of my musings here... Russia clearly looked at the Swedish winning performance of 1991 and thought that would be the path to victory. Which almost worked...
I am an old fan of ESC since the 70's. 2000 is one of the worst year concerning songs and singers! Fortunetly ESC as improved since the 2010's. For me only 3 songs remain: Estonia, Denmark and Turkey.

What a terrible collection of songs. Completely detached from early 2000s music. So cliché and uninteresting. The winner fits exactly the yawn that Eurovision was in the 2000s.
