Another lovely presentation thanks. I am a big fan of Viktor's two crazy outfits - I would have liked the pink dress with the latter headgear for a mind-blowing combination. Your graphic at the start of the voting is lovely. my favourite bit of the voting is the dodgy line to Turkey:
Viktor: "I can't hear you anymore. To which country are you giving three points?"
    Turkey: "...THREE POINTS POINTS POIN"
My points for 87 (and I cannot vote for Ireland)
    1pt Luxembourg
    2pt Portugal
    3pt Sweden
    4pt Germany
    5pt Norway
    6pt Denmark
    7pt Cyprus

    Italy 12 points

I love the flipping, it feels like I'm in a train station when I was younger. Gente Di Mare is a real classic, it should have at least be second! It was high up in a list of favourite Eurovision songs in the Netherlands and Belgium, one of the only non-winners, let alone a number 3!

How far Eurovision has come. Makes me feel nostalgia and privileged to have seen this era yet although when Eurovision had its early noughties puberty into what we see today and i was falling out with it, i feel the modern contest is a Eurovision better than ever. It had to change to survive and reach new audiences.
Yes, now it's more than a song contest, it's a three minute live pop video with lots of disciplines being taken into account and it's musically more relevant than ever. Here in the U.K in this week we have four entries from Eurovision in the top ten chart. Incredible! It's all (modernization) worthwhile to keep this annual Eurovision party going.

A bit unrelated but the 80s were a train wreck in terms of fashion at Eurovision. I'm not sure if some of the outfits and hairstyles were considered trendy in their own time but from a 2021 perspective they just look ridiculous (for example the Norwegian singer's haircut or the Spanish woman's outfit and makeup). This of course has nothing to do with the quality of the songs or the live vocals, they are incredible in most cases.
A bit less unrelated: I just found your channel and I can definitely say I'm addicted to your videos. A similar idea has crossed my mind a couple times as well (I mean animating the scoreboard of older Eurovisions) but I don't know the first thing about graphic design. I'm really glad you've taken the time and effort to make these videos, they're absolutely amazing! Keep up the good work.

Well.... Obviously you are too young. Kate Guldbrandsen's choice is an exact copy of Cindy Lauper's (Time after time, Girls just want to have fun etc) haircut who was a big star back those days. Even being at 12 years when I saw the make up of the Spanish Patricia Kraus I said to myself "Oh, my!!! What on earth freak is that?" So you can understand, even for its own time it was way too much and off of any perception of aesthetics of that present time...

Back in '87 Vasilis Dertilis' (the Greek synthesizer guy) family used to have the most frequented video club in our area. It was the time when the VHS was at its peak and everyone would rent video cassettes to watch movies at home (since there were only 2 state TV channels available). Right at the start of May '87 a notice was hooked on the closed door of the video club saying "We are sorry but the store will remain closed for 2 weeks due to our participation to the Eurovision Song Contest". This went absolutely viral at once all around. Till that moment I am not sure I knew what the ESC was actually all about, but this piece of news shook all the local society which made us wait in order to see what's going to happen. This was the actual motive for me to watch the contest for the first time. Vasilis was never around in the store but his sister Barbara was practically always there and you can take a quick glimpse of her in the audience right after the end of the Israeli song all dressed in white in the second line of seats. Good old days those were!!! (As I was totally ignorant, after the Swiss entry our commentator said "In 40 minutes we'll get to know who the winner is, let's go to the ads now..." and I thought "Boooh, I am not going to wait till then, I'm going to sleep". The next day my cousins informed me that I missed the best part because it's not just an announcement, there is a whole process to get to the results... For years after that I didn't have the slightest idea of what the greek jury had voted. When I checked the results I was astonished of their choices. Now I am so proud that we disregarded the favourites and took our time to estimate the Icelandic, the Portuguese and the Austrian song which are also between my fan favourites of the night. My only protest is about the fact that the greek jury missed to spot the King of the ESC songs, the Italian 87 entry).
    My points are:
    12 Italy 🇮🇹
    10 Cyprus 🇨🇾
    8 Norway 🇳🇴
    7 The Netherlands 🇳🇱
    6 Finland 🇫🇮
    5 Austria 🇦🇹
    4 Iceland 🇮🇸

    2 Sweden 🇸🇪
    1 Yougoslavia 🇭🇷

Fantastic job. You noticed the same thing as I did about how we never see the position of the scoreboard in relation to the stage. All we know is it’s to the right (as Viktor looks to the left.) It can be glimpsed at the start of the end credits though. Other boards we never see in relation to the stage are 1967 and 1978.
I often wondered why RTBF didn’t roll out a computer scoreboard this year. Budget I guess. A physical board looks out of place on such a high-tech set.

    • @thereorderboard
      @thereorderboard  4 года назад

I did just double check the credits to see whether WIGE-Data were credited, and they weren't explicitly named...they had been providing the boards in the mid-80s and I wonder if they were the reason the physical board stayed. That's weak theory though - I think WIGE did the following computerised effort in 88. I expect the cause is probably price, as you said - or that there was more knowledge at the VRT end of the production (the computer animations at the beginning were copyrighted by them, so I assume they own it) and RTBF just went with what they knew best once it was just them.

From real life? I think my favourite physical scoreboard from the 80s is the German one, it fitted into the set the nicest and had a lovely sound when the leading score was flashing! The early 'graphical' ones are hard to love I think but RTÉ obviously found a standard that worked. My favourite is 98 and 99...and 00 lol! All built by the same BBC team as far as I know.

    • @mrjdsworld80

As many keen Eurovision watchers may notice, Greece give Cyprus maximum points (as they have done many times since, and vice versa).
