    That is because our brains are processing everything we see continually as though it is effectively a video. Instead of collecting all the information and storing it into one image like a camera does when you take a still, our brain sees everything within our visual range and processes it on average so we get to see everything and it also fills in any gaps where we might be missing information.

    Careful there: "twice the dynamic range" is a dangerous term.
    The ARRI Alexa 35 has 17 stops of dynamic range, twice that would be 18 stops, since that doubles the range of luminance it can capture.

    At least twice as much is an understatement. The Arri Alexa35 has about 17 stops of dynamic range, the average human eye should be around 20 stops.

      I take it you haven’t used any digital cameras made in the past 5 years. We’re getting the same if not more DR than film. People have literally been ETTR since cameras came out, both digital and analog. You can bring highlights down and many digital sensors allow 2-3 stops over exposed (if not more) and will still have useable information. Nothing wrong with film but you can bring back an overexposed image much easier with digital.

    Well sorta kinda
    Human dynamic range is very wide yes but it's not usable all the time. Our aperture needs time to adjust in the dark, it's much more sensitive when it's wide open but then it's too sensitive if it sees something too bright. So the dynamic range is very good , it's changes aswell.
    Afaik from it's close to 20 which is still better than all cameras I know of.

  • @stanspb763
    @stanspb763 Год назад

    Not really, cameras on a single frame have as much as 14 stops of DR and eyes are more limited but they capture a series of both focus and light sensitivity ranges and paint composition in our brain. So to mimic an eye/brain combination focus stacking can be used, and bracketing in sensitivity with a camera can simulate the scene in the same range as our eyes. All our senses have variable sensitivity based on the absolute stimulus like when we get out of a rock concert we have to yell to talk with our date as our brain turns down out sensitivity because the loud music exceeds the DR of our ears and brain so sensitivity is decreased so the loud music fits in the DR of the eardrum and brain.. Touch is the same way. So our cameras are good enough to capture very wide dr if we mimic the way our ears/brain creates a focus and DR stacked composition. HDR is closer to how our eyes work.

    2 x is totally wrong. Today’s cameras have about 14 stops dynamic range, the human eye about 24 stops. It is a logarithmic scale. One stop more or less means double or half as much, we have an exponential equation based on 2^x where x is substitute for the stops. The difference between 14 and 24 is 10. 2¹⁰ = 1024, that means, the human eye has a 1000 times higher dynamic range as camera sensors.
