I love it! Amazing amount of space. It's obvious, with all of its originality, this boat has been well loved and cared for its entire life. Most boats of this type and age are a stained and mildewed mess inside and rusted everywhere unpainted steel appears outside. Fascinating 35 year old state of the art electronics. I noticed the tuner/amplifier on top of the 'fridge in the galley complete with a foot long analog tuning window and a big knob you spin to get your favorite FM station! Just fantastic and a huge return for a first boat owner willing to pony up $100,000...diesel engines with less than 600 hours on them included. Thanks Nick...great walkthrough choice.
It surprises me that it is worth £85K when nothing has been updated and despite what you say is a superbly designed and built craft, I find it difficult to comprehend that any designer with a grain of taste, would have selected the fabric that has been used internally throughout. It looks bleached out, as though it has been in bright sunshine for all of it's 33 years.
I bet the ones made today won’t last as long as this one it was a great tour and I must admit it is a great looking boat I love the woodwork in it who ever has this hope it is kept to its beautiful way it is very enjoyable
You'd need a sailing jacket with huge shoulder pads. Still, for a cheap start it could be gradually updated as funds allow. Not a bad way to get on the water.

This Broom's layout is astonishing and space saving. I guess other manufacturer's designers were sweeping under a rock. The weed/rope cutters near the propeller is a brilliant idea, never heard of them before. Love the spiral staircase and the double helm positions. That aft cabin is huge! As always, Thank you for the tour, Mr. Nick.
About 15 years ago, I was looking at 40 foot Carver aft cabin boats and it's amazing how much room that design gives you. Àlas...the aft cabin lost the space war to the bathing platform over time
Probably the only boat in Aquaholic i could afford if I sold my House, Car, all my clothes, all my shoes, even my underwears and my slightly used pre loved pristine condition toothbrush. Who needs them if you have a boat?
For a 32 year old boat that is very good. Interesting to see how the tender was held. Strange spiral staircase entrance. Louvred door cabinets are very 80’s. Cabins aren’t bad. The green sink is very dated. No Miele in the galley. Funny seeing old cathode ray portable tv and VCR 😊. Totally original equipment. Love the radio handset 🤣 Aft cabin is good. Decent boat ! Thanks Nick 😊
What an amazing combination of 80s styles in the interior. Floral upholstery, gold hardware and nicely turned woodwork right next to a retro-futuristic and almost synthwavey helm with period state-of-the-art tech like that chart plotter.
If you're willing to negotiate it down some and keep the outdated interior, still a good buy. However, as much as I like 80s vintage stuff, nautical interiors don't seem to hold up as well as other things. I could easily see interior decor and technology upgrades making this more like £100k all told
The interior is fine - it's pretty neutral and not teal & pink like a lot of the flash 80s boats. What really needs updating is the electronics, esp. navigation & radios. That alone is a lot of $$$. My guess is that with such low hours, probably needs a major engine service and lots of new rubber bits. Also the seacocks will need to be thoroughly checked. All of that is a priority over cosmetics.
This broom swept me away with it's ageless charm. What's particularly nice about this yacht is someone else has not had their way with her. Too often in the used boat market, there's that one guy, the owner which has taken it upon themselves to tackle the updates and mod.'s. The result being a boat that was a a classic vintage 1980's giving you an impression it's original build was in the 60's, and that it was ravished sometime in the 70's by a blind man in his 90's..
Here's the thing: In boating money it will cost next to nothing to have the fabric reupholstered. And $85k is an absolute steal for that quality of woodworking.
@@rockets4kids that boat probably needs a complete overhaul of its nav systems, wiring, engine, hull, propulsion and interior. I expect you're looking at 5 figures.
@@drxym That's going to depend entirely on how she was cared for. If she spent most of her life above Teddington she could be essentially a freshwater boat and that alone would make a massive difference. Anyone wanting to keep her as a riverboat won't need to update the electronics (I suspect that is why they are original) nor will they need to worry about a rebuild on the engine.
Why anyone would choose a narrow river boat over this is beyond my comprehension. You get a two bed (london sized) flat with river and ocean capabilities. The amount of updates required makes me feel like £85k is a bit steep but not too far off. Nice vessel indeed!
Do you have a tablet? You can get apps for tablets that will do the job nicely for chartplotters, changing the display for the radar would then be the only big upgrade needed. Adding a gps system that you can use for the chartplotter isn't a huge, costly addition. RUclips channel "Trying not to Sink" has a few videos where they go over working with tablets as their navigation system.
Simply, the beam. some of the MIdlands/ Northern locks have a width of just over 6ft/2m - also the flybridge would have to go!! Could only be used as a liveaboard and southern cruising (until you find a low bridge.)
Well I’d have to say that tour is a clean sweep. Ideally love the round staircase at the entry to the salon. I’d be very proud to own such a classic as this.
Wow that’s a lot of boat for the money! Moreover throw another £25-30K at it for tech upgrades, interior refinishing, decor etc & you would have something VERY nice for still a superb price! Great find Nick 👍🏻
I love the aft-cabin layout, but there don't seem to be many new ones. Haines being an exception. The upsides seem to be more accommodation and central engine placement for better weight distribution. But what are the downsides to an aft-cabin layout?
The biggest issue is for manufacturers who have to expensively fit out the entire length of the boat with an interior, yet new boat buyers value predominantly on length, so they don't get to charge much more if any than an aft cockpit boat.
As obvious from this video, access to engines and other systems is pretty poor - there is a lot of stuff going on below decks other than the engines - tanks, water pumps, waste pumps/systems, steering gear, various tanks, air conditioning condensor, generator and various through hull fittings that need to be looked at. Also you lose any type of lazarette for storage since your bed is taking up that space.
Could you please please try and get a tour of a sunseeker 90 ocean they just came out this January and they are amazing .It is my dream To one day see the wourld on a boat like it

@@simonhopkins3867 oh yeah that green sink is horrible 😂 I was referring to the blue upholstery you see on certain Nordhavns btw (though i definitely wouldn't do it all in that color)
A lovely older boat Nick. Sorry to hear that Broom have stopped making boats. I was on a few of them a couple of years back at the Boat Show and they were well priced and impressively finished. Sad to see them gone

I had my first child, a beautiful daughter called Elizabeth in 1989. 1989 was only about ten years ago! 😃 I’m still struggling to fathom out how she has a teen and ten year old twins of her own already. Point being, I’d love a boat of this age. When I’m widowed I can afford my dream boat. Edited to add, I don’t want to be widowed, I love my husband, but he doesn’t love boats and he prefers to spend our money on cruise ships! Trips on cruise ships, not buying them obviously.
Alright, that's a boat someone can live on to be honest ... turn that lower lounge area into a home office the forward v-berth into some additional storage. Cheaper than a house or even an appartment. Imagine restyling/ modernizing the interior, modern atmospheric lighting, etc. Basically, instead of buying a 140k apartment, get this and refurbish/ restyle it for the difference. You'd still be cheaper off.
Huge amount of space and boat for that money compared to the crazy price of a new 40 footer. Would probably be possible to do quite a bit of modernisation to taps and light fittings etc and upholstery for c £20k. £100k for a floating cottage on the Thames looks cheap!
One cautionary observation: the fine condition of the interior speaks to long-ownership and little use. Spending the money is one thing; having time or inclination for yachting can be something else. A boat like this can be taken two ways: classic restoration or resto modding. The hull needs a good refurbishment. Full modernization of the electrics seems in order. It does seem a new owner would have a fine platform from which to begin. Once modernized, it might be a shame to keep such an able boat on a river.
That’s a really interesting one Nick, a wonderful snapshot of a bygone era. However I think it’d be worth spending money and updating her. The actual layout is great and being a Broom I’m sure she basically sound.

Your knowledge is encyclopedic, which adds to the quality of your commentary, Nick. Your total lack of pretension puts you that much further ahead of the others trying to do what you do. Thanks!
Looks to be a good layout. Dated but you can always refit it at your leisure. Something like this would be ideal for tootling around the Peel/Harvey Estuaries in Western Australia with excursions up the Murray and Serpentine Rivers.
My goodness what a time capsule! Thanks for this that was wicked funny! Being a product of that era I felt right at home! Especially loved the avocado colored sink in the day heads!
One upsides of those old CRT TVs is you can play vintage video game consoles on them directly, the older Sega and Nintendo. EDIT: Oh. And AVOCADO sinks with gold taps!! That made for a great Mitchell & Webb sketch. (It's on YT, Mitchell Webb Avocado Bathroom - well worth a watch).
Back in the day, these were "Gin Palaces". Owners would sit in the marina, drinking Gin and Tonic. The number of hours on these engines, re-enforces this stereotype.
We own a 1989 Fairline 43/45, and it's a great live aboard boat. Yes, it has the odd reliability issue as all old things do, but it has no shortage of space and we often take it out to sea.
Bought a Hallberg-Rassy 352 from 1986 last year, it has the original Volvo Penta 2003T with 4500 hours and the original autopilot: Autohelm 5000 both still going strong. As always, great video Nick!
2nd aft cabin boat in my subscription feed this week after the mid 2000s Pearl from the virtual yachtbroker at the weekend. Surprised this layout has fallen out of favour it looks like a brilliant layout
Oo er that Decca is a bit modern, served my time installing and repairing Decca Navigators for Decca Radar Ltd., back when everything was good old valve technology. Lovely boat Nick and thanks for the guided tour.
Yeah it is surprising how big a yacht can get for such a low price. I've seen most between 100-150k big enough to live on easily. To think if you live near water you could buy a yacht instead of a house and live on the water, i would do it.
A huge amount of boat for your money.. Wonderful packaging space wise and while certainly of it`s time it hints of being a very special boat back when leggings and big hair were the all the rage. I actually really like it. Though for just another couple of hundred grand you could have a similar sized fifteen year old Princess ??? Love the style and you just gotta love the TV and Video set-up.
Nice boat for a weekend river cruiser or live aboard (moored permanently). I'm guessing another £40,000 would make it sea worthy. A bit of an oddity, in a nice way, imo.
Brooms from a,sadly forgotten time. Straight lines.Right angles and that gorgeous companionway art deco flowing staircase,as per even older Broom Crown 37's. I'm drowning in my nostalgia.
It wouldn’t take much to update this, new Cushions round the boat, removing the carpet and changing all the brass. A couple of new kitchen appliances and some navigation devices and it’s looking 10 Years newer. That all wouldn’t even cost much compared to buying a new boat.
Plenty of space on this one! Thanks for showing us this one, Nick. Someday you'll have to give us a tour inside the shoulder bag we always see in your videos. You are a suberb guide through every nook and crannie of boats but you've never shown us what's inside the satchel you always have with you, haha (I remember seeing a white canvas bag and now we see a brown leather one). We are a curious lot so come on now, let's see what's in the bag...a lunch perhaps...don't keep us guessing forever!
It is a very nice high quality boat, that is 43 Years old. Unfortunately boats with an aft cabin do not have enough engine compartment. It is impossible to put a 10kw generator, air condition or a washing machine in it.
Old Old boats = $$$ Money Pits ! Do not be fooled by the inexpensive price. Value matters more than price. The soft goods are hideous. Low hours on the engines are not that good - diesel engines need to be run hard. The aft cabin is very nice. I like this general layout and the small flybridge with easy access.
Nice boat. The price is a bit high though. A lot of work to do here. They could donate it to a maritime museum and it could be appreciated as is. JMHO. Always a good walk through Nick.
More brilliant videos. Just a one question please. I'm from Swansea Wales. Where's the best place to buy 2nd hand boat also would you buy private ot with a deal?
He he I know it might not be cost-effective but it would be brilliant to give a boat like this to Setag with say a £20k budget to see what they'd do (although they might tell you to get lost!) ;-) That would make an interesting vid!
Old boats like these are akin to waxing romantic of the 1800's. Until one sees the tools of the medical professions of the time and the fact that the blacksmith was likely the dentist. It makes one cringe! Ask the Navy if they'd like a new target to practice with.
I wonder how it would look if a modern version was built today with the same layout, bathing platform etc. Im surprised a modern equivalent isn't available or is it?
The wood working has a danish kind of feel (which is very much in fashion these days) I would put 5k extra in here for new cushions and some updates here and there and i can Imagine it could sell for quite a bit more
That layout was very popular In the US 🇺🇸 manufactured by Chris Craft, Pacemaker, Owens & Egg Harbor. Great boat, Good Looking, single handed handling, easy live aboard for any guy. Thxs Sir Nick 👍
Love the avocado basin, to think that's what we all aspired to, a really good design, if you don't swim in the sea very often maybe better to have more space in the boat than a bathing platform, and steps to the flybridge, the woodwork looks better than the mfi quality of some modern boats.
In same ways this older stuff is almost better then newer boats. So much room and its simple and basic. I personally like the wood but probably not everyone does. If you needed it you could upgrade some of the tech to new stuff I'm sure.
Wow, Love this older boat. She is still pretty sexy. I also like how that wood looks like a matte finish instead of all the super high gloss finishes on newer boats today. I would love to have this boat.

Looks so dated not even gonna lie haha but it gets the job done I’m sure.
@Heartsongsutube One reason is white bathrooms were more expensive than coloured back in the day.
Back in the day, these were "Gin Palaces". Owners would sit in the marina, drinking Gin and Tonic.
The number of hours on these engines, re-enforces this stereotype.
Ahhh, love when you drop your videos, right after I wake up in the morning!
Good morning! :)
Fun look. Not so bad, really... much better than a typical 80s or 90s motor home (coach in GB?)
Campervan usually
A great retro boat, just needs updating and get a great river home for not a lot of money. Quality always shows.
That master cabin is lovely, and its great to see how the technology was 'back in the day' too. A lot of boat for £85k.
A couple of new kitchen appliances and some navigation devices and it’s looking 10
Years newer.
The thing is, for £85k you can drop in another £15k to modernise it, re-upholster it, modernise the equipment. You'd be sorted!
Old Old boats = $$$ Money Pits ! Do not be fooled by the inexpensive price. Value matters more than price. The soft goods are hideous. Low hours on the engines are not that good - diesel engines need to be run hard. The aft cabin is very nice. I like this general layout and the small flybridge with easy access.
my job is building high end luxurury horse trucks , race trucks etc . i can asure you you definatly get way more bang for the buck with boats .
I'd Swap that for my Disused church in south west wales in beautiful countryside
Taking me back Nick very similar in layout as our old Birchwood TS39.The Birchwood a bit more modern though
I love it. Sailing that I would expect to be chased by Captain Pugwash looking my pieces of eight 😂😂😂
As usual great video, now this boat with very little modifications would be brilliant. But I would definitely keep the hf phone.
A golden oldie but a perfect live aboard boat. About 10 to 15k for upgrades and you would really have something.
Not to gloat, but let's see NaughtyStyles give this much historical details and perspective on what each of the gizzards do and how they used to work.
Love the boats that NS takes you on, but...well, after having Nick take you on a tour, anyone else's tour is fairly second-rate.
@@RobEJC don't get me wrong, I like legs and butts also.
@@taunokekkonen5733 I hear what you're saying, but I think Nick keeps that thing to a minimum.
Too old to be a consideration for Smugglers Blues 3? 🤔
It is a beautiful older model! 👍🏻🇨🇦😁
Awesome yacht for the money. Maybe an extra £50,000+ on refurbs and it would be really nice!
The wood working has a danish kind of feel (which is very much in fashion these days) I would put 5k extra in here for new cushions and some updates here and there and i can Imagine it could sell for quite a bit more
Man, your watch collection is stunning. I think I’ve come across a Rolex GMT, Seiko SKX, Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, and others?
Well spotted! Baume & Mercier Classima in this video 🙂
I wonder how many times fingers have got stuck opening those drawers :)
That layout was very popular In the US 🇺🇸 manufactured by Chris Craft, Pacemaker, Owens & Egg Harbor. Great boat, Good Looking, single handed handling, easy live aboard for any guy. Thxs Sir Nick 👍
Brilliant, I could see my boat in the background of a few of your shots at the fantastic Val Wyatt Marina.
So would she tackle the sea? Could it pop over to the Scillies? (Planning ahead)
Wow, Love this older boat. She is still pretty sexy. I also like how that wood looks like a matte finish instead of all the super high gloss finishes on newer boats today. I would love to have this boat.
Spectacular and 6 double berths and well priced. Also a possibility as an inshore boat too.
