I tried this a little while ago on a big job, I ended up with better edges by exposing for the product then masking and boosting the exposure in post.
Fun to experiment and see the results others get for sure
Yes, that's the proper way to do it. My idea in this video was to skip the background fix and also the in-camera-set-the-correct-exposure on every image. Doing it this way you only need to set the object exposure in Camera Raw, you save a few seconds there 😁

Good tips mate! Another way to come at it could be to expose for the product and then pull it into camera raw and select the background and bring this up to pure white. This would be useful if you can't get a good enough result with exposing for the background (can't get good separation). I guess as always it depends on the subject you are shooting. Cheers.
Yeah, absolutely. Then you know the exposure is correct. But I guess all objects will have different exposure so then it will be one click more.
Nowadays you can just shoot on any background with any kind of light and the select background and generative fill/white. Done.

Haha, yeah. One thing I forgot to mention is that my way of doing it in this video is kind of bad when it comes to "flare" on the product, just like I got on the back of the Nike shoe, not the end of the world but it's something to be aware of. Should have mention this in the video but I forgot...
This is actually how I do it for my clients. I expose for the product (using a color check card first). And then select the background in Lightroom/photoshop and make it 100% pure white.
Yes, that's basically the same thing. However, I prefer to set the correct exposure for the product in post than in camera, goes a bit faster imho.
Great guide! I usually do the same but I add 3 flags (left, right, up) so the edges are not overexposed cause sometimes fast selection dont work especially when the product is white, translucent or glossy

awesome to get your wisdom on this! im shooting shoes and training shoes where some products having multiple materials that are matt and gloss and usually i expose for the product and in post use an inverse mask to raise exposure on white background and foreground - Ill give this approach a try to over expose see if it helps speed the process a bit instead of revising exposure per product needs.
Well, it's basically the same thing. The reason doing it this way, just like you mention, is to skip to set correct exposure for every product + fixing the background. Now the background is set and all we need to do is to set the correct exposure in post, it goes faster in post than in camera in my opinion.
6:58 ❤. This is certainly a very fast and interesting way to shoot white backgrounds in camera. I don't think it'll supercede my current methods but I'll give it a shot when I'm done renovating my studio in a few weeks.
the ant is back... 🤣 There are so many ways of doing this but I think this is a very fast and dirty way of doing it. I always have a problem to get that pure white background. I always focus on the product and then fixing bg in post. You can do it the other way around and get perfect exposure for the product and then just select the background and over expose.
@@botvidsson Right. I have a couple of methods depending on the product and what kind of angles are needed. One involves glass, the other I make an infinity curve with transparent plexiglass, both involve separate lights on the background and subject, and usually creating a black tunnel to shoot through and at times flags around the subject. I get ultimate control this way but is a beast to setup and dial in, the major upside is is almost no post production and shot to shot consistency when doing a ton of similar items. But again, you seem to have a knack on showing me a different way to shoot so I'm eager to try it!

And how bout to show another pro-like way to shoot on white background, but properly with separate light sourse behind the product as a white background, flags around the product and separate light sources for product? so this way you can have both 255 background and normally exposed product right in camera without editing. And placing a product on some transparent surface for sure

Great video Martin! Thank you. I was doing some hand bag product shoots with similar technik but I had to select everything with pen tool. It was nightmare to post process all photos especially these with silver chain or hardware or bags with white or creamy leather. I watched at least 20 videos and had to combined them together and use what was working. I would love to know how big studios speed up this process because it took me over week to post process around 250 photos. I'm not professional photographer but would love to get to that point one day.
I hear you. But why did you need to use the pen-tool? to cut the objects out? Did you need transparent background? Or could you not get a pure white background?
@@botvidsson I had the same thing. I think what he refers to is that the shiny and white objects will interfere with the background and Photoshop can not select the object
Aha, I see. In that case it's better to expose the object correct and select background and go high key or generative fill with white.
there's a pretty simple way to shoot stuff on white backround without need for cutting objects at all
all you need is separate light source for background staying behind the product (it can be either softbox or diffusion panel)
then, you put the product on any transparent surface like glass or acrylic sheet to make sure background light source is seen all around the froduct, then put a flag between product and background all around the product making sure you cover almost all background light leaving just a narrow gap of it around the product. Background is ready. All you have to do to finish is put another one light source for product especially so now product will be exposed properly and you can fill up shadows any way you want with reflectors or another light sources. Voila ^^ for editing you will need to paint white color where flag is seen
