16:47 Neil, 4K streaming on Netflix tops out at around 16 mbps, while the maximum for UHD-BD is 144 mbps (though the highest actually used for current movie releases is a bit over 100)
Yes, there's a still a huge picture quality difference between a UHD bluray release and anything the streaming services choose to deliver. Particularly noticeable in dark scenes, which is something that was really seen when Sky/Now put out some of the Game Of Thrones/Dragons content. Unwatchable mush at times. Also streaming services simply can't delivery anything better than Dolby Digital+ audio streams which are always heavily compressed for bandwidth reasons. By comparison a UHD disc will almost certainly have a Dolby True HD Atmos or dts:X lossless soundtrack. It's mp3 vs CD type quality arguments again. You lose detail and dynamic range from the streaming options. The only download service that is bit perfect for the discs is Kaleideacape. I can probably get hold of one for a run at the RC if interested. (Or at a lovely home cinema facility in Bristol).
Agreed with the downsides of digital streaming media, especially when it comes to gaming. We have already heard of a few games being pulled and told “you don’t own the game, only a licence to play” I guess its especially difficult when net play is involved and implemented in such a way that developers servers have to be used and maintained. It’s always great to find a game that can use gamespy alternatives..or hamachi etc..
Ah Edge magazine, as the one who dropped off my collection to the Cave before it opened in Stroud, my reason for collecting it was the more adult way it was written. That and the way it covered in depth obscure formats in a pre internet world. .
There's a handful of reasons why I prefer physical media for film/TV but the one that's bugging me the most just now is the selection. There's been a myth for years that "everything ever made is a mouse click away". But that just isn't true. The Netflix DVD thing bummed me out as their disc library was something like 20 times the size of the streaming library.
Vinyl LPs are so nice for the large format artwork and turntable ritual. Flipping through an organized record collection is also a great experience. Otherwise it sucks.
I remember mentions of Tab Clear but don't think I tried it. I do however remember Panda Cola. The drink of choice that would allow you to get a drink AND a snack if you were skint. In the time-frame I remember, brand drinks were around 50p-60p and Panda Cola was 30p. Basically tasted like semi-flat Coke.
funny you guys mention dungeon crawlers, but in my mind Hired Guns "sort of" qualifies as a FPS game in my head canon, not the proper full 3d fps ofc, but still kind of a fps.
regarding the optical disk part of the show, did neil mention that going from cassette to disc and then back might have been the problem. My question is if i heard correct was neil thinking of DAT (digital Audio Tape) rather than Minidisc at that point? if not i stand corrected
@@themegantontechchannel3212 yes i was aware it was more a comment that neil made more than what was and wasnt available at the time. He refers to it around 10:45 when he says going from a cassette style to a flat form and then back to a cassette style when they were discussing a mini disc.
Hey! Yes the minidisc being a disc in a caddy is what I mean. A CD feels much sleeker despite being an older format than a caddy, which had a throwback feel to it. I also felt the same about early CD ROM drives needing a caddy and was glad to see those go. Neil
Unfortunately we have to accept it. I put my physical media into Xbox Series X and it wants to download the whole game. Hey at least I've got something to look at while its doing its thing.
I want to know if anyone actually did the Zodiac registration for Corporation and sent their photo to Core to get it scanned in and sent back a data disk of their face for the game.
GAme streaming is already a thing in my house... my youngest uses it a lot, cause he can continue his game at his moms and at my house... I pay for it.. just give him a firestick and controller to take to moms
For consoles, digital only (perhaps already with the next generation playstation/xbox?) will be the death of 2nd hand games, borrowing from friends etc. 😥 We'll be at the mercy of Sony/Microsoft determined prices (with or without price drops and discounts) in their digital stores at any given point in time. Yes, there are the subscription models like Playstation Plus and Gamepass but that is not more economical for everybody, just a stable revenue stream for Sony/MS.
I had a PS3 but still had no interest in Blu Ray films, and I never bought a dedicated Blu Ray player. It just didn't seem a 'relevant' thing at the time!

For reference I've been working in this industry for the last 25 years. It's great fun! 😁
Great podcast. Look forward to it every week. Thanks.
A pity that the negative effect of the disappearance of physical media on ownership, consumer rights and game preservation was not touched on.
Probably because they have covered it many times in past episodes.

Tab Clear was sold in the UK between 1992 and 1993. I liked it at least.

As soon as you mentioned “the bundle” I hit the like button 😄
Azad video. that's a blast from the past.

Everyone needs Douglas Adams in their retro collection. Unfortunately he's unobtainable, but his very brilliant books are still available! :)
these plugs. uv-ray is next after blu-ray. then euv-ray. let blue bury their rays. you follow me. i'm blue dabadidabadaa.

Because CD means compact disc so smaller than the LP size discs that came before.
What about ACE magazine? Loved that mag till I got my Amiga A500
Does Neil have another cold? That’s kids for you :)
I know right! It’s been cold after cold after cold since she arrived with us.
Citadel on the Amiga!

Say what now? 🤨
Unreal was the first FPS I played on the PC (built my 1st one in 1997).

Yes you had DAT but don't forget DCC players that could handle both the then new digital compact cassette and the old analog ones.

@ThisWeekinRetro ah I see what you mean now, thanks for the clarification
So where can I buy this Davecoin?

I'm a 55 year old Fortnite player. It's my favourite game.
just starting, dunno if i'm in a state to bother with the whole thing, shogo?

I thought it was spelt "Novotel"?
My my my Michelle 😂😂
If you know you know

Twirlers > Slimy Furglers

You do NOT need an Nvidia card to play Indy Jones on PC.
But, but, everyone just knows that is the way it's mean to be played! 😂
