Something can always be learned from anyone, even if it's what not to do.
So Encouraging. 💜 I literally just got back from the barn wondering if I made the right decisions this morning (which included canceling a lesson) because my "feel" said my mare was just not tuned in even after our groundwork today. After she worked off her anxieties, calmed down and seemed focus my gut said "end on a good note and call it a day". I returned her to the pasture. Thank you Sir for sharing your wisdom. This video helped a developing horseman feel confident in her decisions. 😊
I have gotten pieces of information from dozens of great horseman sources, and I created my own style. The one thing that helped me the most is learning the horse's language (body language) and becoming an effective communicator with the horse. I have progressed to experiences 'one mind' with some of the horses. A great experience.
Please keep on making videos. I'm just someone who used to live for riding and just being with horses. They're very special animals in their sensitivity and intelligence. It's so wonderful to build a good relationship with a horse. They'll look after you just like you do them. Gotta be caring and gentle. Everything needs that.
Good advice: Take the time it takes so it takes less time. Go into that 'tool box' of experiences and pull out what you need to get the job done all the while thinking of what is in the best interests of the horse.

Some of the best advice I try to remember is "slow down" when things go amiss. An old examiner told me this during a certification- I was on the clock, running out of time and getting frantic. Sounds counterintuitive but slowing down saved me. I've found this philosophy helps with most everything life throws at you. Wise words, Dwayne.
Coming back into horses as an adult I was stumped by a very challenging mare. I found Pat Parelli and devoured his info for years which was a huge help for me. I was ready for more and found Alexandra Kurland and clicker training. Then my next horse presented me with a whole new set of challenges, and this time I had RUclips and so many wonderful famous and unknown trainers to watch. What I can’t find on RUclips I figure out on my own. I’ve loved horse since I was born, and still learn new stuff from them and with them every day.

Wise words. Ryan Rose, Caroline Rider, Warwick Schiller, are really good. Some talk about catching, working horses in paddocks.
I've known Warwick for a number of years now and I can say without a doubt I have learned the most from him, but I have learned a ton from others you mentioned as well. I have trained everything from jumpers to dressage to working cow horses, to buggy horses and I have found that no matter what I am doing Warwick's "principles of training" get the job done. How I apply those principles varies from horse to horse but at the root of it all the principles that work for me are the ones he describes in his "principles of training" videos.
I really appreciate all of your videos. I’ve learned so much from you in such a short time; I didn’t grow up in this lifestyle and although I’ve immersed myself into this culture, there’s so much I’ve never been taught. Thank you and your wife for the work you put into these videos!

I am way old... learned to work and train animals with my dad and uncles... had dogs and horses all my young life... the philosophy you talk about is all one needs, learn from an animal what is required to make a working team... sounds to me like you had to learn all this on your own... glad you did... working on grand and great grate grand children now... hop some of it sticks... good luck...

This I can 💯 percent in total agreement with everything you said in this video! We all can learn bites and pieces from all the called Professional trainers! Time is ALWAYS on your side if people rush through training horses they will get hurt or the horse well! Sometimes with certain horses it's best just to back off when they don't understand what you are trying to teach them! As a person that cares lives horses it's your responsibility to figure out away to teach them in a way that The horse that is being trained understands
Aawww! I don’t like Clint Anderson and Parelli because they don’t encourage the most humane horseman ship methods (and their techniques can be abusive when placed in the wrong hands )
Meanwhile I’d rather listen to horsemen like you and Rick Gore. I observe that horses love you to death. I loved that mare video you did. While the mare was irritated, she was going to sleep underneath you. I could tell she trusted you.
Your personality is magnificent too and so calming. I wish I could pack up my things and work on your farm for the rest of my life.
In my book, the worst / incompetent people somehow find themselves popular while good, honest men (like you ) have to work a bit harder.

I needed this video. I’ve been getting into riding a ton. And my mom had tickets to Clinton Andersons walk about tour. I learned a ton from it but my girlfriend who’s much more experienced than I am was telling me about why she wasn’t a fan of him and why she doesn’t like him, I couldn’t understand it very well at the time until I processed all the information for myself. But my family is all about Clinton Anderson. So I was at a cross roads on how I should go about learning to train my own horse and the fundamentals/training/groundwork. Thank you Dwane for helping me understand what my patient girlfriend was trying to explain to me. Take in what I like and be aware of what I don’t, learn as much as you can from who you can but you don’t have to only think there’s a certain way of doing things. Listen to who you like. Learn what you don’t, And Become your own trainer.
I can tell you I trained one horse when I was a teenager she was an older mare she was the best my auntie had some donkeys and I used to ride after them I just let them run where ever I just rode after them thru the rocks thru the brush and the mare I named salena got really good at herding what ever you get behind she had Cruz control she knew her job and was not lazy nothing got away from her she had the speed to keep up with wild horses and she was very cowey but I have roped her leg riding her and she bucked but I never feel off her I gave her to my grandpa cuz I was leaving the reservation and I never seen her again I herd all kinds of different things what happened to her I wish I still had some of her offspring I came back to rez about ten years ago we have horses but nothing like her my step dad has roping horses but there always limping I agree with the other video about short stocky horses

That was a great talk Dwayne.I learnt a lot about horsemanship when I reeducated and sold horses for my living.In sourcing these sale horses I came across a lot of unheard of people who had done exactly what you said in your presentation.They became their own horsepeople because they didnt have anything else .I believe they had a genuine desire to connect at the deepest level with these horses.When this happens the horse resonates with this desire and energy and actually teaches us what communication works in the horse world.I have learnt more from a housewife with a pony in the backyard than all the other learning.I too resonate with Warwick and Pat.Its the resonating on that deeper level that the horse truly understands.From their comes trust, respect and fun for both horse and person.These beautiful animals are not put in our lives for our ego.They are put here for our soul.

I love this, it has taken me so long to ask what can I do with this horse today where I am. Instead of thinking of all the things I can't do. You might be interested in Elsa Sinclair's work, she trained a mustang with no tools, no halter lead rope, whips, round pens or even fences. I can't do everything she does, cause like you say I am not her. But it sure has shown me how much you can do with very little. Thanks for your wisdom, they should put you on Warwick Schiller's podcast!.
Wouldn’t that be so cool? Warwick and Dwayne hanging out talking horses. I’d have to say these 2 guys have turned my whole head around on how I hang with my horse now.

Well said. As you alluded to, something else that a lot of us don't have is the big fancy set-ups that a lot of these famous trainers have. Figuring out how to do it well with what'cha got is an important part of discovering yourself.

I love your videos! They're sure reminding me about what's important. I'm going to a Buck Brannaman clinic with my horse in a couple weeks. I've audited a few. For some reason I'm unable to get my horse to load in a trailer. I've been working really hard to get this working. Trying different horsemen's approach. I'm not giving up. But it makes me feel better to hear what you were talking about!

I sure agree with all of this information whether your training dogs or horses, because I’ve trained both. I have done the same thing over the last 20 years ( longer with dogs). I have learned bits and pieces (no pun intended) from every trainer I have laid eyes on. Good or bad it’s always more info in my tool bag.

Dewayne, I listen to you specifically because you don’t push a dogma. I never heard you say this is the way you do it & it’s the only way. Teaching any philosophy takes more insight than pushing dogma. I can tell by the comments left here that generally speaking you’ve got a group of like minded individuals. We don’t do everything the same but we all belong to the same club.

I have truly been thankful to find your videos and listen to you as a horseman an a Christian Dwayne. As the misfit in my family, horseman and odd one out no one understands my drive or passion for this life style. Let alone the fact I want to do what you do and I’m a woman. Is there any encouragement you could offer? Any help for someone that’s been riding for 24 years and wants to be where you are? Because my mom claims because I am not a man I’m incapable of this life. I built a fence for my horses practically by myself and work hard to take care of everything, plus train my own animals. Anything you could offer I would appreciate and prayer for the decisions I make. Thank you. God bless.
Being a misfit is not all together a bad thing. What one has to do is simply define for them selves what their dream is, determine logically and realistically if their dream is worthwhile, and then pursue it. And never quit. I have been trying to get to where I am right now for over 20 years, and I’m just now starting to see it happen.
I worked one two summers on a ranch and still follow the values I learned while there at 15 I’m now 43 and a professional driver and have trained or helped train a few horses in my life what I’ve found about the studying and learning. it works no matter what career you follow. The nameless “ horseman” anyone with any sense won’t follow him just goes against everything I’ve experienced or learned
I've been blessed with a horse that's way more intelligent than I am. I learned to "read his behavior" and after that he taught me all about himself. We weren't in a big hurry to get know each other and it has really paid off. God's peace to all, be good to your horse!

I really like your videos and find that what you say is true in my experiences with horses. I certainly agree with taking some from a number of trainers and doing what fits you. A good word. I find that the BIBLE teaches principles to deal with other people and with horses. God bless you and thank you.
I'm a modern languages school teacher. When I want the students to get their heads around a new grammar point I give them 2 or 3 ways of remembering it and tell them 'pick what works for you'. Only that way will it stay in their long term memory.

I started 20 years ago. I had people tell me stuff like “bite their ear, hobble them, then they won’t fight.”
Then I was handed a video of Pat. At the time he was too influenced bu his nutty wife.
I then found an Aussie (when he was skinny) “it’s just business mate” he connected the dots from where I was at to where I wanted to be.
I’m currently working with a harshly worked 18 mare for my GF. They both are doing well.
This narrative is my feelings that I can’t articulate.
As always , very good advice. You are a thinker. I have seen people with little horse experience , put a horse in a round pen and work him to death, because C.A. said he had to make an inside turn. Whaaaat?
I agree that you have to take these trainers knowledge and find your own ways that work. That being said I don't believe in some who uses a step by step method to train. Every horse is different and have to be trained different, so you always have to be able to see the needs of the horse.

Glad to see you not handicapping yourself with a round pen. But you don't need to work pressure/release either. I work 40 acres, no cross fencing, all voluntary engagement. I fixed more than a few meatmarket and "neurotic" horses that way. Time is your friend--take it :)

How do you over come confidence, we have just bought a head shy horse and she has really knocked my confidence......my other half has owned horses for years so she's not botherd but I have only been doing it for 3 months and she's a big mare that jolts her head alot
Mozart, read what you can about horses that throw their head around, then learn to use a good tie down (matingale). You'll do fine, don't give up and be consistent with that horse. Gets something going that works for this horse, then don't be changing it up.

Dewayne Bob from Butler Pa here have been leaning a lot from you thank you. So I am a hunter from the east I have an upcoming elk hunt with spotted horse ranch Jackson hole Wyoming . Hunted with them 2017 I have maybe 50 hours in the saddle newbie at best I do 5 hr trial rides at home to practice I don’t know what I don’t know can you please help me to be a good client . Really good video but just to balance things out Caroline Resnick and Stacey Westfall are very accomplished trainers, as well, and very good to throw into this mix of learning from different sources: (also because women will often be able to relate to other women's approaches easier as well as be inspired ).

Actually train seven days a week from foal born twice daily to yearling. Hirses trained on command. But Moe importantly nit trainning but More like learning. And become one of them daily. We are a Family. It's after horae racing that it gets frustrated. Because I have to retrain them how to be them again not a product. How not to winse every time I raise my arm. How to just be horses and hang out. How to work how to be friends.

I de-worm my horses 4 times a year, at the start of each season change. An important note on that is to make sure that you rotate the type of wormer medicine that you use. If you use ivermectin every time, the worms will develop an immunity.

Tanner, I’m not in a position to be able to do something like that at this time, as I am currently just a hired hand living in a ranch house provided by my boss. However, it is my goal to change that one day in the not too distant future, and if you would would like to stay in touch, things may open up at a later date. I appreciate the interest.
