Picking up those cut ends is critical.I’ve seen young horses nearly cut their foot off getting tangled up in a 2’ pc.of wire.
If it’s on a 10,000 acre place-THEY WILL FIND IT!
You can’t hardly kill a sorry one,but the good ones always seem to be the ones getting in trouble.

When you cut the old broken splice off and you added into your comment that "You don't think it broke to due to the last guy who fixed it" brought back a quick story my good friend and former boss once told me when I was helping him fix his fence at his Dairy. I had complained about how long it was taking, then he said" In six months or even a year from now when this fence falls down, No one will ask how long it took to build it, they'll just want to know Who built it". Do you want your name to come up? lesson learned, and I didn't complain anymore. What I learned was, If you're going to do a job, do it right. have some pride in your workmanship. Dwane, you remind me of him in a lot of ways. simple logic you just can't debate. Good videos.

Here is a man who understands the marriage of information and entertainment. He is the dream of today's tv producers and programmers... and likely, the next internet millionaire... The cars/trucks/towing/rescue genre are now full... (more power to them) this is the next frontier. And, so far... he OWNS the space.

I preferred riding any day( no matter what I was doing) and my saddle bag could hold the tools and staples and wire. Fun to watch. Those most definitely were the GOOD ole days.! Just found your channel and enjoy it very much. Thank you!

A short piece 3-4”of 1/2” ridged copper pipe or conduit slipped over the end of the wire gives old hands a little assistance in making those wraps tight. It’ll fit in your pocket or tool bucket without taking up too much room but worth it at the end of the day when your hands ain’t as sore as they might have been. A little leverage goes a long way. Amen.

Howdy from Cooper Landing, its Sammy! My husband was telling me about this RUclips channel with a down to earth horseman. I've doctored many horses with wire cut pasterns. With barbed wire it can get pretty messy. Whenever I fix fence for horses I usually either leave out the bottom wire (unless there's going to be calves in there sometimes) or replace it with smooth wire. But it's not my ranch so I can only do what I'm told...

Good video. Reminded me of mending fence when I was a teenager.
I had neighbor that got a horse and fenced in behind their house with a single strand of barbed wire. They came home from work soon after and found that horse standing in the biggest pool of blood, trembling. It had gotten astride the wire and walked it until it was nearly sawn into. Vet came out and put it down.

I've not got nearly the years of experience working with horses that you have though I've been around livestock, especially dairy cattle and even more so horses for 42 years off and on. This much I'll say about horses, if there's a way for them to get into trouble, they will find it. And it's the rare horse in my experience that will carefully think it's way out of a problem as opposed to one that will panic and make it worse. I once saw a horse back in my college years (1985 to 1989) panic and try to leap a steal fence gate (the ones with the trapezoidal metal pieces) and wrapped that gate around it's right leg and tore the heck out of his leg, ripping and tearing up it's skin as it leapt around. The horse healed, but it was never the same. Why the horse spooked is beyond me. I only heard it panic and jump around saw the bloody end result. I've been on and around various kinds of breeds of horses and I will say that some breeds are more the "thinking kind" than others, but still you'll find that one horse that will realize it put a foot wrong going on the trail or in the field and slowly maneuver itself out of that situation. It's a delight to watch that. It's like watching a pupil learn something you've taught them and realize they completely understood the lesson. I have a friend with an excellent endurance riding Arabian gelding. I'd trust this animal anywhere. He's a thinking horse if ever there was one.

Friends had a mare with shoes on get stuck in hog wire fence. Wire between hoof and shoe. Because she was never taught to hobble, she jerked loose and left the shoe and about half of her hoof wall hanging on the fence. With a lot of doctoring and fancy shoeing we saved her and her hoof wall grew back normal after everyone said it wouldn't. Never use hog wire in a horse pasture and teach your horse to hobble for they will stand and wait to be saved most of the time. As always, enjoyed your video, even tho it was about my least favorite subject!

I walked a lot of fence when I was a kid, chopping weeds with a machete to keep them from shorting the hot wires. And mended a lot of fence, too. A pair of small vise grips in the "wrapping" hand helps with leverage. Those mesquite and osage orange fence posts get hard as iron when they age. I always had a twist or two of baling wire in my pockets for quick repairs when I saw something sagging.

Where I'm at, we have corn and soybeans all the way around our pasture. I use 5 strands of that twisted barbless wire, with one hot wire at the very top. After everybody's been shocked once or twice, they won't event try to touch it. It's the only way to make our fences last, but it does cause one other problem. Once a horse knows what an electric fence is, they won't want to walk between two fence posts, even with no wire. I have a single strand of hot wire I use to rotate pasture, and when I move the herd, I will lower that hot wire all the way to the ground and lead them across it one at a time. This helps a lot once they know they can trust you that it won't hurt them.

Yep, old wire gets pretty brittle. We've got a fence that's probably around 50 years old--it's about time to replace it. Every time we try to fix it, it seems like it just breaks in a different spot a few days later, some places I've broken just by trying to make a loop in it. However, I'm not looking forward to the task of replacing the whole darn thing. LOL Recording video while you're trying to work is difficult.

Maybe I’m crazy but I’ve always enjoyed fence work. I’d prefer to not have to do a bunch of it but it’s a good feeling. I guess a little goes a long way

I only fix fence as an independent contractor, I only work with my tools & equipment, and if they don't like splice tubes by Splice it. ...I'm Gone!⚔🤠👍🔥🇺🇸 The genuine USA made splice it tubes and Crimping tool is the best for old wire ya gotta check it out. 👍

As much as I like Dwayne's videos, I ain't watching this one. Don't need the info (or the practice) on fixing fence.
I'm gonna crack a beer, click to another Dry Creek video and settle back in my recliner.....
Still gave it a thumbs up tho.......lol
