There's another 2 generations of jet aircraft that you're forgetting came between "ww2 style planes" and this era of jets. F-80, f86 variants, Hawker Hunter,, Mig 15-Mig19 were all used in the Korean War (also later used in the Vietnam war) before jets like The Phantom and Thunderchief were possible to build. THEN you have aircraft that introduced radars and AA missiles like the F-106, Mig-21, S-U7 etc. which all came before the aircraft shown in this video. After that, is when these advanced styles of aircraft were produced. Its not like they just went from "ww2 style planes" to the F4 Phantom in one huge technological leap😂 Germans produced the first jet propelled aircraft around 1943...
Also think about how far aircraft came before and after this. In 1920, we're flying small propeller planes where 20mm guns would shake the plane around, in 1940, we're on the brink of flying jets that can fire 40mm cannons from the nose of the aircraft at 800km/h...the progress that these engineers made during intense wartime, even between 1920-1940 is truly amazing, its easy to see how the momentum and knowledge would only grow and produce faster results of aircraft as the technology got better
And those "ww2 style planes" were VERY powerful by the end of WW2, super spitfires could reach 700--800km/h which was basically the max power before jet engines were introduced
Wait until people realize these planes kept flying after Vietnam and still fly today. Primarily with the Colombian Air Force, which uses modernized AC-47’s with turbo prop engines, and have seen extensive service as a counter insurgency aircraft against FARC Narco Terrorists.
Cheap solutions for nations with little to spare. It doesn't matter if they don't have good AA anyway. Most of the Syrian airforce used 50s bomber jets against ISIS for the same reason. If it's cheap and works, why fix it.

A few times my father ordered smokey on VC. He tells me it's probably one of the prettiest things he saw in Nam, and he enjoyed every time he ordered it.
Yes very much so. The Army was against the program because they thought the idea of a “gunship” should be army helicopter territory only. It was a marvrick in the Air Force who put together a team to build a prototype with next to nothing for a demo. Then I think they built six to get in country (nam) as quick as possible to judge their real world effectiveness. The rest, as they say, is history. My dad often recalls a story about Puff. He said they wouldn’t just take out the enemy, but also the jungle. That it would knock down every tree, but it would also knock off every leaf on those trees. Obviously this was probably an exaggeration but it’s one of his favorite stories from that time.
I met a retiring NCO at Hurlburt Field who was a crewmember on the AC-47 in ‘Nam. He told me stories of how the VC literally didn’t know what hit them when the first waves of Spooky attacks commenced. As the flares where dropping & they were getting fixes on positions to fire again, he says the VC weren’t even shooting towards the Army Special Force camps but just into the surrounding jungles trying to hit where they thought the fire was coming from. He said the VC made it look like that scene in “Predator” after Jesse Ventura’s character was killed! 😂
The literally flew a sortie every night. Fire base Kate when under siege had two alternating on station every night almost the entire duration. They had to leave once dark and be home before sunrise because they were very vulnerable to small arms fire due to their low operating ceiling. Only one was an AC-47, I think the other was a newer model can’t remember the numbers off the top of my head. Something like an AC-51 maybe? That one could see the infrared strobe they had on Kate so was able to direct fire a bit closer. Their rudimentary Pipper for aiming made them weary of friendly fire. Basically if there was no FAC contact they wouldn’t fire.
@@James_T_Kirk_1701 Afaik there were a few dozen C-47s converted to AC-47s, only a number saw service in Vietnam though, maybe 30 or so? But there were a few dozen other craft turned into AC type aircraft, like the AC-119 program and the AC-130 that operated in the 70s as a proof of concept that and the less successful AU program which used Pilatus aircraft that were armed with a small rotary cannon and a small array of bombs and unguided munitions. The AU program yielded somewhere like 50 aircraft split between the AU-23 and 24.
Imagine being on the receiving end of that like “hmmm whyd that plane just pop a couple flares?” “Damn thats alot of red lines comming out way” then just bullet holes for the 60-120 seconds

I forget which aircraft it was but a U.S. pilot figured out how to bank his plane and fire at North Vietnamese transport vehicles at night and hit them accurately. The method was so effective the North Vietnamese would chain their driver's ankle to the interior of the vehicle's cab so they could not jump out and run away when the heard the plane going into its maneuver. The driver knew he would be toast in a few more seconds. His only choice was to try evasive driving tactics which is not easy on a narrow trail in a jungle. Spooky a.k.a. Puff the Magic Dragon would put a round in every square foot of the area equal to 2 football fields with one quick burst of the trigger. To not be hit you had to be very short, thin as paper and lucky as hell.

That must have been a rapid shift in CoG dumping all those rounds. From experience with helicopters 4400 rounds of 7.62×51mm = ~ 800lbs / 363kg.
Edit: That would include the equipment as well. Still 6000RPM x3 would be something to see.
Does anyone know the name of the full length video? Who published it? Any info to help find it? Would love to watch it!

@@Algedibarrios im afraid that is incorrect: "The original gunships had been designated FC-47D by the USAF, but with protests from fighter pilots, this designation was changed to AC-47D during 1965. Of the 53 aircraft converted to AC-47 configuration, 41 served in Vietnam and 19 were lost to all causes, 12 in combat". From the AC47 wikipedia page. so, if by crashing you mean non-combat losses, you got 7 planes that were lost (AKA Crashed and/or malfunctioned beyond repair) in the Vietnam war alone.
The gattling guns were perfect for illuminating enemies on the ground.
War is so sad, man. Some people never left Vietnam. For those who did, Vietnam never left them.

AC-130: dad? What is a vietnam war?
AC-47: sit down son, I'm gonna tell you a spooky story tonight
I laughed when he got to the "F-111" after using the names of the previous aircraft.
What? "Aardvark" not intimidating enough for you, Walter?
The unofficial nickname aardvark came many years later after the F111 started being used. It's first official moniker was TFX .
A few times my father ordered smokey on VC. He tells me it's probably one of the prettiest things he saw in Nam, and he enjoyed every time he ordered it.
America: “you see that basic transport plane?“
Me: “yea”
America: “we gonna put 3 Gatling guns, 2 canons, and a bunch of advanced technology on it”
Not only that, they've attached jets to the wings to shorten the length of runway needed to take-off.
so spooky was pretty much the AC-130 grandpa
Yes very much so. The Army was against the program because they thought the idea of a “gunship” should be army helicopter territory only. It was a marvrick in the Air Force who put together a team to build a prototype with next to nothing for a demo. Then I think they built six to get in country (nam) as quick as possible to judge their real world effectiveness. The rest, as they say, is history. Check out the book “Night Hunters” by William Pace.
Too much money for ideas that did not lead to victory

My dad often recalls a story about Puff. He said they wouldn’t just take out the enemy, but also the jungle. That it would knock down every tree, but it would also knock off every leaf on those trees. Obviously this was probably an exaggeration but it’s one of his favorite stories from that time.
*Puff the Spooky Dragon*
I met a retiring NCO at Hurlburt Field who was a crewmember on the AC-47 in ‘Nam. He told me stories of how the VC literally didn’t know what hit them when the first waves of Spooky attacks commenced. As the flares where dropping & they were getting fixes on positions to fire again, he says the VC weren’t even shooting towards the Army Special Force camps but just into the surrounding jungles trying to hit where they thought the fire was coming from. He said the VC made it look like that scene in “Predator” after Jesse Ventura’s character was killed! 😂
It could be said that this aircraft was the precursor to the c-130.💥👍
_"you can run,but you'll only die tired"_
It’s crazy how they random shoots the gatling Down the jungle
Yes
Accuracy by volume.
Puff the magic dragon has me dieing 😂😂
14 million sorties?!! Is that even possible?
10 years of war will do the trick

Vietnam was the worst war because it showed little guys everywhere that it didn't matter how much they threw at you, you could still beat them with light weapons, a pair of pyjama's and a shit load of resolve.

Not really. The NVA took insane losses compared to the US. We lost the war in Washington.
The soldiers on the ground weren't allowed to win the war, what this shows is that if you choose war, politicians are nothing but a hindrance, diplomacy is finished, it's the soldiers turn to convince the other side to concede or die.

No one was living underground in the United States but they were in Vietnam.
North Viet Nam was ready to surrender after TET, extended "Peace Talks" in Paris called for a cease fire, not respected but less fighting just the same and the North regrouped during that time and pressed on, Democrats ceased support for the war, funding in short so an exit strategy was created and the rest is history.
